A Word from the Mayor / Mensaje del alcalde

BE AZUSANSEA UN AZUSANO

By Mayor Rocha

It is time for each and every Azusan to be counted—both citizens and non citizens. March 2010 is gone and by now everyone should have received their 2010 U. S. Census forms. If for whatever reason you didn’t receive a questionnaire by now, you may pick one up at Azusa’s City Hall, Library, Senior Center, or Memorial Park. Be Azusan…Be Counted! Each household should complete

and mail back their questionnaires immediately. Households that do not respond may get a second questionnaire in Early April 2010. If by May you have not returned the completed questionnaire, Census takers will visit your homes to take a count in person. The U. S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years to count the population and determine the number of seats each state will have in the U. S. House of Representatives. April 1, 2010 has been designated as Census day. By law, the Census Bureau must deliver population counts to the President by December 31, 2010. And by March 2011, the Census Bureau must complete delivery of redistricting data to each State. A complete count of all persons who live in Azusa is important because every year the federal government allocates more than $400 billion to state and local communities based in part on census data. The data is also used to determine boundaries of state and local legislative and congressional districts. And last but not least, the data is also used to determine locations for retail stores, schools, hospitals, new housing developments and many other community facilities and services. It is estimated that in the 2000 Census, approximately 28% of Azusans didn’t return their questionnaires and as a result of that, Azusa didn’t get its fair share of funds. The 2010 Census questionnaire is easy and safe to complete. With only 10 questions, it only should take about 10 minutes to complete. Each household is asked to provide key demographic information, including but not limited to, whether a housing unit is rented or owned; the address of the housing unit; and the names, genders, ages, races of all families or persons living in the household. We are assured by law that the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’s or household responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement agencies or entities. All Census Bureau employees take an oath of nondisclosure and swear for life to protect the confidentiality of the data. The penalties for disclosure are fines of up to $250,000 or five years of imprisonment or both. Once again I ask you to complete your 2010 Census questionnaire and to Be Azusan and Be Counted, and help us get our fair share of Federal funds.

The second of a two-part series about Dr. Alice Watkins, former Dean at Azusa Pacific University. Upon her retirement in 1995 as Associate Dean of the School of Education at California State University, Los Angeles, Dr. Alice Watkins received a call from the President of Azusa Pacific University (APU), Dr. Richard Felix. Dr. Felix offered her the position of Dean of the School of Education and Behavioral Studies. Accepting his offer, Dr. Watkins recalled, "I wanted to make a difference in the lives of faculty members and students. The biggest goal I faced when starting at APU was building community." Her vision for accomplishing this included seeking accreditation for all departments, increasing research and diversifying the faculty and students under her deanship. Although the initial reaction to her approach was mixed, ("Some were shocked," she laughs), detractors changed their opinion when they realized she was a solid leader, a team player and a gifted administrator. When she began her deanship, Dr. Watkins stressed the importance of accreditation for all departments. "I knew we had one of the finest teaching programs around, but we needed national accreditation in order to prove this to the academic community and potential students." To achieve this, she worked closely with the chairs and faculty members of each department. Within four years, the School of Education applied for accreditation and was accepted. Graduate Psychology and Athletic Training followed and within a few years, all professional programs in her department had completed the accreditation process. "Faculty members began to see themselves in a more positive light," reflects Alice. According to Dr. Watkins, "Teaching should be informed by research and teachers should reflect the academic community in which they serve." She worked hard to instill in faculty members the importance of conducting research in addition to teaching. As a result, new articles from the APU teaching community were published to reputable journals almost daily. "It was a big boost to our department," Alice says, "and the competitive fires burned from that point on!" One of Dr. Watkins' greatest contributions to APU was in the area of diversity. Because of her efforts to enroll students and hire faculty of differing ethnic backgrounds, the university saw increases in African American, Latino and Asian populations. She notes, "Younger faculty members came on board, which added a vibrant feel to the university." Her former colleagues at Cal State LA sent new PhD staff, many of whom were attracted by the upbeat spiritual message of the university. By the time she retired from APU, the university boasted increased attendance and a department with a sizable profit margin. She achieved every goal she had set for the department and was given the distinguished honor of Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Numerous scholarly awards, such as the Alice V. Watkins Imago Dei Ethos Award, continue in her name. "It was a wonderful seven years," she states. Those who had the privilege of working with her certainly would agree.

DR. ALICE WATKINS: A VOICEFOR THE CHILDREN PART 2

DRA.

Fidel Fares has come a long way, from humble beginnings during a civil war in Lebanon to owning and running one of the most successful franchises in the area. “I grew up in Beirut; it was during the civil war so it wasn’t always easy. We would sometimes be interrupted in school and were displaced from our city to another city depending on the situation.” He left Lebanon in 1982 for France to go to college there for three years, and then to Dubai. He graduated with a degree in aviation and worked in Dubai for an airline for ten years. It was in 1991 that he came to Miami Florida to take his FAA dispatch exam with Pan American Airlines. “When I went to Miami I fell in love with America, I lived in Miami for two months and in January 1993 I moved to Los Angeles permanently.” Upon arriving to LA he worked several different jobs, a Beverly Hills travel agency and also a restaurant. “I met my friend Sam Kaissy who is the founder of Dalia’s pizza when he came to buy a sandwich and I was the cashier. I hadn’t seen him in many, many years and he told me he was in the pizza business and that I should come see him.” That same weekend he went to visit, “He asked me to work for him as a pizza delivery boy in the city of Rancho Cucamonga which was my third job. I liked it. I was delivering about 50 orders a day on the weekends making about a hundred dollars in tips. That’s when I told him I wanted to become a pizza man.” His friend Sam advised him to learn the business, all of the cooking and all of the management. After three years a location that used to be Mike’s Pizza in Azusa opened up and Fidel jumped on it. “I opened my first Dalia’s Pizza in October of 1995 and in that same year I got engaged and married to my wife Hala.” As a team they tackled their new business, having no employees they were there from open until closing, and in the end, the business was a success. “In 1997 I opened my second location in Covina with lots of success as well; we really take care of our customers and make sure we always develop menu items and buy the best ingredients even if it cuts into our profit margin.” In taking over the old Whole Enchilada Location, Fidel is planning a new kind of Dalia’s Pizza. With overwhelming support from the community and the land lord he is able to make his new vision of Dalia’s come true. It will be a full service restaurant offering a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. As always they will still offer carryout and delivery. “The restaurant is going to be called ‘Dalia’s Italian Ristorante’ a new version of Dalia’s Pizza and it will host the best banquet location in this area.” Dalia’s Italian Ristorante will open in May, 2010 and will be offering free pizza for a year for the first 100 customers on opening night. “I couldn’t have done this without the support from my customers, the Mayor of Azusa Joe Rocha, the Azusa City Council, and the City Manager Mr. Delach, along with many others who have helped me with this new venture.” Fidel expresses that keeping his 100,000 customer database happy is his key success. “I treat all my customers like they are my only customers. I feed my customers quality food like I would feed my own family.”

By Oscar Espadas

dreams. “I would not have been able to achieve all of this without the wonderful support of my family, friends and faith in God.” Crystal has become a part of the Miss America Organization by competing in local preliminary pageants. Being involved in these pageants has given her self-confidence, poise, the ability to communicate well with others and form many wonderful friendships. The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Crystal says “I’m so fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful organization that has helped me grow into the young lady I am today and for the scholarships I have been awarded which bring me closer to achieving my education goals.” Each contestant is required to choose a platform issue that she cares deeply about and that is of significance to our country. Crystal’s personal platform is “Childhood Obesity Awareness and Prevention.” Having struggled with her weight as a child she has seen firsthand the devastating effects this can have on one’s self esteem, health and social development. Crystal says “As a child, I dealt with issues of insecurity and low self-esteem which prevented me from becoming involved in extracurricular and school activities out of fear of what other children would think of me” Crystal wants to lead by example by sharing her experiences with others and empowering students to exercise regularly and eat healthy nutritious meals. With the bicentennial celebration of San Bernardino taking place this year, Crystal is very excited to hold a title with so much history. She will be reigning over the 95th Annual National Orange Show Festival on May 27-31 and will take part in San Bernardino’s bicentennial parade on May 22. Crystal will later go on to compete for the title of Miss California in Fresno July 6- 10. It is her positive attitude and persistence that has gotten her this far. When asked what she should like to tell young ladies out there that are like she once was she responded “I try to live my life by inspirational words of Walt Disney himself “If you can dream it you can do it” and I encourage everyone to follow their dreams no matter how challenging it might seem”.

¡ADELANTE CON LA PRIMAVERA!

SPRING FORWARD!By Julie Pusztai

Our clocks have sprung ahead! We are in a season of lengthening daylight with nature around us sprouting, growing, budding, and blooming. Many find this an energizing, invigorating time of inspiration and hope. My challenge this month is for you to grab onto this energy and inspiration, to take advantage of this time of coolness and light, and spring forward! Get moving! By Southern California standards we have actually had a wet and cold winter this year. We may have been indoors more than usual and need to be intentional about getting back out there. There are many opportunities to help us do this. In the Azusa community and the surrounding area we are fortunate to have many leaders that have embraced the need to create healthy physical activity choices. There are some I want to highlight. Since November, on the second Saturday of every month, community members and Mayor Joe Rocha have an organized walk at one of the city parks. Targeting children and their parents from the surrounding schools, the Be A Walker events start at 9:30am. Children receive a free pedometer and t-shirt and after a brief and fun health lesson, all participants start off around the park with a guest leader and continue for at least a mile. Afterward, everyone enjoys a free, healthy snack. April’s walk is on Saturday the 10th at Memorial Park and will be followed by the Community Healthy Gardening event. Another local opportunity is the Azusa Walks program at the Neighborhood Wellness Center (626-812-5191). By making at least a four-week commitment to return weekly, you can receive a free pedometer, a t-shirt, and education and information on health, disease risk, park walking routes, physical activity, and diet and nutrition. An exciting option is participating in the Tuesday and Thursday morning walking groups lead by a committed and skilled trainer.
