President’s Report It’s been almost a year now since Ian Horsburgh’s passing and I still miss the monthly phone call asking me how the President’s report is going. My heart goes out to Chrissy must for her loss. At the Far Cairn Rally last weekend we had a short candle lit vigil while Josh Evans played a short slide show he had prepared. Anybody who didn’t know Horsy was invited to remember anyone that might know who has passed away or been injured. It very special to see all the little candles we handed out twinkling on the hill. I’m sure it contributed considerably to the great vibe the rally generated.

I’d like to thank the following businesses and individuals (in no particular order) who contributed prizes for the FCR raffle:

Adventure Moto Ian Emmet

Adventure Rider Mag Tony Wilton

BikeBiz Grey Gums Café

Pro Cycles Hornsby Colo Heights Service Station Restaurant

Sydney Motorcycle Wreckers John Olive

Josh Evans Mr Mobile Their support was invaluable to the success of the fundraising. Special thanks to Ian Emmet (who was unable to attend) for contacting sponsors and other legwork, Rob Edgar aka trophy builder extraordinaire and sponsor legwork and Josh Evans who continues to keep us entertained every year. This year at the rally we also handed over a big cheque to Ken Lovegrove of MARI Australia, covering funds raised at the last three FCRs and held over until something practical was happening rather than it disappear into a research budget. When Bob has run the numbers and we get the nett profit from last weekend’s FCR worked out, there will be another cheque to follow.

Don’t forget the Show Day and Zundschlussel Run on 11 October (the weekend after the long weekend). Trevor Dean has been working hard with the BMW Drivers Club to make this a happening thing. Please note, you must register to enter this event, it makes it easier for organization and entry to the grounds on the day. Registration for bikes is $5, not exactly a princely sum so if you can’t make it because of breakdown, weather, sewer blockages or the cat dying you aren’t going to be zillions of dollars out of pocket. Subscribing to the newsletter is not the same and at my request the Drivers Club has improved the bmweventnsw.com.au web page to make the registration link more obvious. Please come along and make it a great day.

The 50th Dinner is drawing closer. Last conversation with Marie she indicated few motel rooms were left but plenty of cabin accommodation still available. Entry and invite forms are included in this newsletter. Please follow the instructions and if anything is as clear as mud please call Marie or myself. Note that accommodation as well as dinner bookings are made through the club. This should be a great night and quite a few long term members have booked already.

I was already in for miles of ribbing for buying British, but with gearbox selection problems with the XC making me a DNF for the ride home from Tottenham on Sunday I guess I'm in for lots more. Thanks to Ian, Sam, Dave, Marge, Marie, Al and especially Woz for help and support. My bike is on agistment at Chateaux Barlow until next Sunday when I can head up with my ute. Ta Postie for the phone call offering help for the rescue mission. Thanks to everyone I can still say I had a great weekeend.

Dave Povey got walloped from behind on the Golden Hwy while turning right. Luckily bruises and scrapes are all he sustained after initially being knocked out for 20 minutes. Fortunately Paul was there with him and he had plenty of help. Paul says the driver was distraught at what he had done and remorseful. Dave is up and about already but sadly his well-sorted Wozza-improved NX650 is a write off. Wanna buy an 800XC Dave? A shame really this happened because he had been enjoying a great weekend of riding until then. Safe Riding in October everyone! Al Peters

THE R100S

As it was with the original owners Daughter on board

Back in February Craig Ward from Katoomba sent an email to the club offering his late father in-law’s R100S. Quick off the mark I sent him a text and secured the old girl for $1000.

As it Came

Gwenny and I travelled to Newcastle to pick the bike up from Phil’s mother in law. She was very sad to see her late husband’s bike go as it was the last of his former possessions. He had passed away only three months before so I was pleased to offer her money for it.

The bike is an 8/1976 R100S, engine number 6060264 and was last registered in 1994 and had been sitting in the shed since then so there was some concern about rusty bores etc. Unfounded as it turns out.

All I really got was the basic bike with 32,000 Km showing on the clock (second time around maybe?) without a seat base, exhaust system or fairing but it came with the original books, tool kit and an “as-new” set of big Krauser panniers.

Searching Gumtree I found and bought the remnants of a 1984 R100 RT from a guy in Bungendore who was stripping it to make a café racer. I sold the fairings and panniers, donated the tank to Wozza (needs lots of work) and scored a set of Staintunes, a seat, front guard, crash bars and a few of the other small bits I needed.

R100 RT Bits

I removed the heads and sent them to Ray Peake in Queensland. He installed unleaded compatible valve seats and an extra spark plug holes for the classic “Twin Plugging”.

New Ignition, Gaskets and Reconditioned Heads

I decided to replace the points with an electronic ignition system. Best advice from the Queensland boys was to install the 26 degree Red Centre system to match the Twin Plugs along with suitable coils and to set the timing on the old girl to TDC. I also replaced the Diode board and mounted it on solid mounts and installed a new solid state voltage regulator.

I didn’t have an original fairing so I bought a fibreglass replica and a new screen from “Screens for Bikes”. I decided to mount the fairing differently to the way BMW installed the original one to enable it to be removed more easily and to make it more stable.

The forks were removed and sent to Radchrome in Brisbane to be straightened and re-chromed. New internals and felt seals in the dust boots were fitted to complete the restoration.

Using an original additional top fork plate I fabricated a top fork brace to sit under, and be bolted to, the original top plate and installed a stainless steel sheet metal

lower fork brace off the RT. These bikes are renowned for their front end instability so I’m hopeful these measures will improve it.

Fabricated Fork Brace

Master Cylinder Handlebar Conversion Kit

Other bits I’ve replaced include;

Steering head bearings;

Stainless steel push rod tubes;

New BMW Roundels (One of the things I cant buy is an original R100S seat badge so I’ll have to use a reproduction sticker)

Carbie kits;

New brake lines with braided ones;

A handle bar conversion to get the master cylinder out from under the tank;

New drive shaft bolts;

Brake calliper repair kits and pads;

New header pipes;

A new battery;

New wider handle bars;

A new set of stainless steel spokes for the wheels;

I also shouted the old girl a new set of original Fiamm Hi-Lo tone horns.

Most of the bits were sourced from either, Ray Peake, (who has been very generous with his technical assistance), John Olive, Motobins and Munich Motorcycles in Perth W.A.

The biggest job has turned out to be the painting. I selected the original three part paint (Base coat, colour then clear) similar to that BMW put on it. The tank was fairly knocked around. Just as I had fished priming it the bloody thing fell off the saw horse landing on its head putting a rather large dent in it which had to be repaired. Back to square one. Bugger.

Getting a sunny day in Canberra in the middle of winter to enable me to paint it was a challenge. When I source a better tank I’ll paint it again.

On starting the engine I was pleasantly surprised how smoothly and quietly it ran. I checked the cam followers etc when the barrels were off and they were in great condition. I kept the old rings and pistons and gave the bores a light lick with the cylinder hone.

Of course I fell for the two thousand “O” ring trap discovering what that funny shim and “O” ring were in the gasket set when there was little or no oil pressure on start up (thanks Wozz for steering me to the advice on the internet).

I originally had trouble getting it to fire on two cylinders until after a long process of elimination I discovered I had bent the “Can” that goes over the electronic ignition Hall Effect sensors slightly. Simple fix but hard to find.

This has been a big job and has become something of an obsession. I’ve spent all the money I got for selling the FJR and a fair bit more. I plan to make the bike my daily ride so I’ve fitted 50/50 Enduro tyres so I can use it on good dirt as well.

Job Done

At the end of it all I’ve ended up with a spare R80 mono-shock ST/GS frame, Instruments of an 84 R100 RT and a few other small bits and bobs that I’ll be happy to part with.

The 2015 Far Cairn Rally had 151 official entrants and grossed over $4000 at the gate and through the raffle. There were 50 pre-entries. Bob Madell has his work cut out for him working out how much profit we are able to send to MARI this year. While not a record turnout the mellow and happy crowd made for a really great vibe. The BMW S 1000 XR – all good things come in fours.

Following on from the S 1000 RR and HP4 superbikes as well as the S 1000 R roadster, BMW Motorrad is now unveiling the fourth member in the BMW Motorrad line-up of high-power motorcycles with straight-four-cylinder engines and a distinctly sporty bias. Building on the tantalising and unique mix of innovative technology, performance and safety already inherent to the existing models in this series, BMW Motorrad has taken the next step by bringing out the S 1000 XR, which offers this repertoire of core characteristics in a brand-new blend dubbed “adventure sport”. This encompasses dynamic touring qualities, sporty performance and high levels of comfort as well as outstanding everyday usability. In short, the new S 1000 XR serves up its own individual mix of sporting and touring flair at the same time as injecting a generous dose of emotion. General Manager, BMW Motorrad Australia, Tony Sesto, believes the launch of the new BMW S 1000 XR will provide further growth for the brand locally. “BMW Motorrad is going from strength to strength in Australia, driven by the extension of our product range and the innovative technology that is standard in each and every Motorrad bike,” Sesto said. “The new S 1000 XR will deliver more riding thrills than ever and introduce BMW Motorrad to a whole new audience. Its unique character blends sporting performance with an adventurous spirit, and is another model we are proud to present to two-wheel enthusiasts.”

Straight-four-cylinder engine for punchy adventure sport performance.

The straight-four-cylinder engine on the new BMW S 1000 XR is basically derived from the S 1000 R roadster. It has an output of 118 kW (160 hp) at 11,000 rpm and generates maximum torque of 112 Nm (83 lb-ft) at 9,250 rpm. This power unit produces torque in abundance, making it ideal for providing the punchy response at low and medium revs that riders seek when powering along

Page 12: BMW TOURING CLUB€¦ · and Car Show. Rushcutters Bay Park. Trevor Dean 6 Coffee and day ride meeting 22 Patterson Road, Bolwarra. 9.00 Am for coffee. Possible ride afterwards to

12 of 20

country roads or carrying a passenger. The straight-four-cylinder unit combines tremendous pulling power and exhilarating acceleration with a high peak output, while offering the rider a usable rev range that spans over 10,000 rpm. This makes it just as adept at highly pleasurable touring as it is at sporty rides down winding country roads or holiday trips complete with passenger and luggage.

Two riding modes and ASC as standard as well as the option of Pro riding modes including Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and ABS Pro.

To enable the riding characteristics to be adapted to the prevailing road conditions as effectively as possible, the new S 1000 XR already comes with the “Rain” and “Road” riding modes as standard. The standard-fit Automatic Stability Control (ASC) ensures a high standard of riding safety by optimising traction. The new S 1000 XR can be equipped ex- works with the Pro riding modes option, which includes the additional riding modes “Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro” along with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and ABS Pro.

Innovative chassis with a new frame and Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension

Adjustment) as an option.

The chassis of the new S 1000 XR adventure sport bike is every bit as impressive as the ferocious power delivery of the four-in-line engine. Based on this model series’ existing design, it employs an aluminium-alloy perimeter frame in which the engine forms part of the load- bearing structure. Wheel suspension at the front and rear is handled by an adjustable upside- down fork and a double-sided swing arm with adjustable central spring strut respectively. The chassis geometry has been completely redefined in order to cater to the specific requirements of the XR. When fitted with the optional electronically controlled suspension system BMW Motorrad Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), meanwhile, the new S 1000 XR takes riding safety, performance and comfort to even greater heights, while also promising adventure sport at its very finest.

ABS Pro available ex-works as part of the Pro riding modes option for even greater safety when braking in a banked position.

Whereas the standard ABS systems from BMW Motorrad to date have ensured an excellent standard of safety when braking while moving in a straight line, the optionally available ABS Pro feature now goes a step further to make braking while cornering safer as well by enabling ABS-assisted braking in a banked position. In such situations, ABS Pro prevents the wheels from locking up even when the brakes are applied sharply. This reduces abrupt changes in steering force, especially in response to panic braking, and thereby limits any undesirable righting of the bike. ABS Pro offers riders the benefit of increased braking and riding stability combined with optimum stopping power, even in corners.

The new S 1000 XR – style and function for both sport and adventuring.

The new BMW S 1000 XR fuses the characters and strengths of the BMW Motorrad GS, Touring and Sport models on a visual level as well to create a new breed of motorcycle tagged “adventure sport”. This is clearly mirrored in every design element and combines with the flawless ergonomics, ingenious wind and weather protection as well as the 20 – 30 mm increase in spring travel and greater ground clearance to make an impressive statement. Whether it is mountain passes, a tour of the countryside, motorway riding or even rough sections of road – the new S 1000 XR handles it all with aplomb.

The venue is Rushcutters Bay on Sydney Harbour. We have reserved an area for 200 BMWs. All BMW motorcycles are welcome to be displayed. There is an entry form attached to the website for the BMW Show Day. The BMW Show Day is followed by the Zündschlüssel Run leaving from the BMW Show Day and travelling to Jamberoo down the coast road to Melbourne. All BMW Motorcycles are welcome on the Zündschlüssel Run. It finishes on Friday 16 October in Melbourne. There will be overnight stops at Jamberoo, Narooma, Mallacoota and Sale. There is a display of classic BMWs on Sunday 18th October at the Moto GP on Phillip Island. Zündschlüssel is the ignition key for all early BMW motorcycles. We would love to see as many of these BMW motorcycles at the BMW Show Day and on the Zündschlüssel Run. The details of the BMW Show Day and the Zündschlüssel Run to Melbourne following the event are on the website: www.bmweventnsw.com.au Please review the information on the website and subscribe to the newsletter to obtain updates of the events. Warren Buffett - Nomination for Life Membership of BMWTCNSW I would like to put to the members the nomination of Warren Buffet for consideration for Life Membership. I nominated Warren for Life Membership in writing in November 2014 and specifically requested that the award be presented at the 50th anniversary dinner in 2015 as I considered this was the appropriate occasion.

Warren is the epitome of a member who deserves this award for his continued exceptional efforts for the BMWTCNSW.

The criteria for the consideration of eligibility for nomination to life membership of the club consists of a requirement to be a financial member for a minimum of 15 consecutive years and to be a member of the club who has made a significant ongoing contribution to the club and it’s running.

Warren certainly fulfils all the requirements as well as those above and beyond serving as a committee member. He joined the club early in 2000 and was immediately involved and was awarded the Most Active New Member in 2000. He won City Clubman of the Year 5 times from 2005-2007 and 2012, 2013. The BMWTC is very good at snapping up new, keen and enthusiastic members. Warren was elected as Vice President of the Club in 2003. This was a precursor to him being elected as President in 2004 and 2005.

He was heavily involved in the committees to assist the coordination of the 2 rallies run by BMWTCNSW. He designed and manufactured wonderful trophies from BMW motorcycle parts for the Rally Awards for KRR from 2004 to 2014 and for FCR from 2007 to 2014. His hands on attitude helped in the fit out of the club trailer during his period as Assets and Archives Officer.

I think it is fantastic that BMWTC nurtures and encourages such talent and then rewards it. Warren was awarded the Peter Dennis Memorial Award in 2004 and 2008. Peter Dennis passed away when he was the president of the BMWTC. The President's Award, inaugurated in 1989 was named in his honour and is given to the person selected by the president for the most contribution to the club for that year.

Warren was also the club delegate to the Motorcycle Council of NSW for 11 years from 2003 to 2013. The MCC was a great advocate for improvements for the motorcycling community in this period. They championed improvements in a number of fields: - Free & improved parking for motorcycles in the Sydney CBD - Annual Motorcycle Awareness Week - Advice on legislation relating to exhaust labelling and reintroduction of front number plates. - Reviewed CTP Green Slips for motorcycles and are now working to reduce the costs. - Increased advertising from the RTA for motorcycle awareness. - Obtained representation on the Helmets Australian Standards Committee and on the Road Barriers Australian Standards Committee He also served as Vice Chairman of MCC in 2005 and 2006. He has undertaken the role of compiling the historical records of the club. This includes recording the lists of committee position holders over the 50 years of the club and collating newsletters for the club archives.

Warren is a thoroughly decent fellow who has time to listen and relate to people. He has an understated determination and has been empathetic in seeking out those in need.

I am happy to propose a motion to the September 2015 meeting that Warren Buffett be considered for the award of Life Membership to the BMW Touring Club of

NSW. Trevor Dean International Delegate, BMW Clubs Australia

While he might hang out with a couple Woz is definitely no dummy!!

APPLICATION FOR NEW MEMBERSHIP / RENEWAL OF MEMBERSHIP

BMW Touring Club of New South Wales Incorporated

(Incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act, 1984)

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

The BMW Touring Club of NSW was founded in 1965, with an initial membership of 15.

The aim of the club is to provide a social medium for BMW riders and motorcycle touring. It is not necessary for you to own a BMW motorcycle to join the

club. There are a wide range of activities throughout the year, ranging from regular day rides, rallies (local, interstate and other BMW club rallies), runs with interstate

BMW clubs and camping weekends. We have gained a large number of trophies from our attendance at rallies. The club also has regular maintenance days (where

you can tap into a vast range of knowledge from our members). We have spare parts available at a slight discount for members and a variety of special tools for use

when servicing, repairing or replacing components. We also have social evenings, an annual presentation night/dinner and a Christmas party. The club encourages

family involvement in all events.
