Unleaded fuel

The engine runs only on unleaded pet-rol, which can also be sulphur-free.Since the engines have a knock controlfunction, they can run on differentgrades of petrol.

The engine of your BMW is designed torun on:

> Super Plus/premium plus petrol octane number 98 RON.

Run the engine on this petrol by prefer-ence, in order to achieve rated perform-ance and petrol consumption.

You can also run the engine on:

> Premium-grade unleaded petrol octane number 95 RON.

This fuel is also known as:

DIN EN 228 or Euro-Super.

The minimum grade is:

> Regular-grade unleaded petrol octane number 91 RON.

> Diesel oil to DIN EN 590 standard.

Do not use rapeseed oil methyl-ester (RME) or bio-diesel or you

will risk damaging the engine.<

Winter diesel

To ensure that the diesel engine oper-ates reliably during the cold season ofthe year, it must be run on winter-gradediesel oil, which garages usually sellduring the period in question. Fuel filterheating is installed as standard equip-ment to prevent the fuel from solidifyingduring operation.

Additives are not approved, because their use could result in

damage to the engine.<

Tyre pressures in bar gauge pressure are shown on the driver's door post(visible when the door is open).

Checking tyre pressures

All pressures are listed in bar (gaugepressure), with the equivalents in kPaand pounds per square inch, for tyres atambient temperature, see tyre-pressuretable below.

When towing a trailer, always use thevalues for the higher load.

Cars with tyre pressure control (RDC):

After correcting the tyre pressure, reac-tivate the system; see page 84.

Check tyre pressures regularly (atleast every two weeks and before

starting a long journey). Incorrect tyrepressures can adversely affect the car'sroadholding and cause tyre damage, which could result in an accident. Also remember to check the pressure inthe compact spare tyre or full-sizespare tyre. The spare wheel should be inflated tothe highest pressure applicable for anyof the car's tyres.<

Make sure that only approvedtyres are fitted

These tyre pressures apply to makes oftyre and tyre sizes approved by BMWand known to BMW Service. If othermakes of tyre are fitted to the car, higher tyre pressures may be needed.

The key set

1 Master keys with remote control determine the functions of Key Mem-ory, see page 54.You can also use the coloured adhe-sive labels you received with the caras identifiers for the keys

Each master key incorporates along-life battery which is automat-

ically recharged in the ignition switchduring the journey. You should, therefore, use the masterkeys not normally in use to drive the caron a lengthy trip once a year or so, inorder to recharge their batteries.<

2 Spare key to be kept in a safeplace, for instance in a purse or wal-let. This key is not intended for regu-lar use

3 Door and ignition key this key doesnot open the lock of the glove box:this can be useful for instance at ahotel or restaurant with car parkingservice

  ")

The principle

The central locking becomes activewhen the driver's door is closed. Thefollowing are locked and unlockedtogether:

> Doors> Luggage compartment lid> Tank flap.

The central locking system can beoperated

> from outside the car with the remotecontrol or at the lock of the driver'sdoor

> from inside, using the button pro-vided.

Operating the central locking systemfrom inside the car does not lock thefuel filler flap, see page 35. If it is oper-ated from outside the car, the anti-theftsystem is activated at the same time. Itprevents the doors from being unlockedeither at the safety lock buttons or doorhandles. The alarm system is also acti-vated or deactivated.

In the event of an accident, the centrallocking system is released automati-cally. In addition, the hazard warningflashers and the interior light areswitched on.

The principle

The remote control is an extremely con-venient way to lock and unlock yourcar. There are also two additional func-tions:

> Switch on interior light, see page 32This function can help you locateyour car if you have parked in a largeunderground garage, for example

> Open luggage compartment lid, seepage 32Opens slightly regardless of whetherthe lid was previously locked orunlocked.

When the car is locked/unlocked, theanti-theft system is activated/deacti-vated at the same time, the alarm sys-tem switched on/off, and the interiorlight switched on or off, accordingly.

You can arrange for a signal to beprovided as confirmation that the

car has been locked correctly.<

Master key with remote control

The doors can be locked from theinside by persons or animals in the

passenger compartment. Always takethe car keys with you so that the carcan be opened from the outside.<

If the remote control is unable tolock the car, this means that the

battery in the key is discharged. Youshould use the master key in questionto drive the car on a lengthy trip in orderto recharge its battery.Prevent unauthorised use of the remotecontrol, for example by handing overonly the door and ignition key or thespare key to hotel staff, for example. In the event of faults, contact BMWService, which can also supply replace-ment keys.< 1 Unlocking, convenient opening and

The principle

The alarm system is triggered:

> If a door, the engine compartment orthe luggage compartment lid areopened

> If there is any movement inside thecar interior movement detector

> If the car's inclination changes, forinstance if it is jacked up to remove awheel or if it is towed away

> If the power supply from the battery isinterrupted.

Depending on the national-market ver-sion of the car, the alarm system indi-cates unauthorised entry or tamperingin different ways:

> 30-second acoustic alarm> Hazard warning flashers switched onfor approximately 5 minutes.

Activating and deactivating

Whenever the car is locked orunlocked, whether at the driver's doorlock or with the remote control, thealarm system is activated or deacti-vated at the same time.

You can arrange for several sig-nals to be provided as confirma-

tion that the alarm has been activatedor deactivated.<

Even if the alarm system has been acti-vated, you can open the luggage com-partment lid by pressing the button onthe remote control, see page 32. Assoon as you reclose the lid, the luggagecompartment is again protected by thealarm system.

Alarm system telltale light

> The telltale light below the inside mir-ror flashes at a steady rate:the system is activated

> If the telltale light flashes when thesystem is being activated: doors, engine compartment or luggagecompartment lid are not properlyclosed. Even if an item is not closedfully, the remaining items are pro-tected and the telltale light begins toflash continuously after 10 seconds. However, the interior movementdetector is not activated

> If the telltale light goes out when thesystem is deactivated: no attemptwas made to tamper with the car dur-ing your absence

> If the telltale light flashes for10 seconds when the system is deac-

tivated: an attempt was made totamper with the car.

After the alarm has stopped, the telltalelight once again flashes continuously.

Avoiding false alarms

The tilt alarm sensor and the interiormovement detector can be switched offtogether. This avoids false alarms, forexample due to the movements whichoccur if your car is in an elevator garageor on a train:

Perform the locking (activating) opera-tion twice, by pressing the button onthe remote control twice in successionor turning the key twice to the lockingposition.

The telltale light comes on briefly, thenflashes continuously. The tilt alarm sen-sor and interior movement detector arethen switched off until the system isdeactivated again.

Interior movement detector

Before the interior movement detectorcan operate correctly, the windows andsunroof must be closed.

However, switch the interior movementdetector off (see Avoiding false alarms)if

> children or animals remain in the car> windows or the sunroof are to remainopen.

The tilt alarm sensor and interiormovement detector will be

switched off inadvertently if the conven-ient closure movement of the windowsand sunroof is interrupted within thefirst 10 seconds and restarted. In thiscase the complete system must bedeactivated and reactivated.<

Adjusting

You have to be comfortably seated inorder to enjoy relaxed, fatigue-free driv-ing. In conjunction with the seat beltsand the airbags, a correct seating posi-tion enhances passive safety for theoccupants if the car is involved in anaccident. Comply with the followinginstructions in order not to detract fromthe protective capabilities of the car'ssafety systems.

Additional information on safety for chil-dren: see page 53.

Correct seated position withairbags

Keep back from the airbags.Always hold the steering wheel by

its rim to minimise the risk of injuries tothe hands and arms if the airbag is trig-gered. Do not interpose any other per-son, animals or objects between theairbags and the seated person. Do notuse the cover of the front airbag on thepassenger side as a storage tray, anddo not permit the front-seat passengerto travel with their feet or legs on thiscover.<

See page 52 for details of the locationsof the airbags and for other importantinformation.

Seat belts must sit right

Never restrain more than one per-son with each seat belt; do not

permit babies and small children totravel on the lap of another occupant. The belts should not be twisted andmust be taut across the pelvis andshoulder, as close as possible to thebody. They should not pass over hardor fragile objects. The seat belt mustnot run across the wearer's neck, norshould it be trapped or abraded bycoming into contact with sharp edgesor objects. If possible, avoid bulkyclothing and take up slack in the lapbelt frequently by pulling up the diago-nal (shoulder) section. In the event of ahead-on collision, the lap belt couldotherwise slide over the hips and injurethe lower part of the body. In addition, the restraining effect is reduced if theseat belt is slack against the wearer'sbody. Pregnant women should alsowear the seat belt, making sure that thelap strap is well down on the hips anddoes not press on the abdominal regionof the body.<

See page 46 for instructions on operat-ing the belt buckles.

.

Before adjusting

Do not reposition the driver's seatwhile the car is in motion. The seat

could move unexpectedly, leading tothe driver losing control of the car, sothat an accident could be caused. Donot recline the seat back too far whenthe car is being driven (this applies inparticular to the front passenger), orthere will be a risk of "submarining"under the seat belt, so that the beltloses its full protective effect.<

Adjusting manually

You can also adjust the mirrors manu-ally:

Press at the edges of the glass.

For instructions on saving the mirrorpositions in memory, see Seat and mir-ror memory, page 48.

Curved mirror

The outer, aspherically curved sectionof the mirror displays a larger field ofview, though slightly distorted, than theinner, convex section. In this way, theview to the rear is extended and the so-called blind spot is reduced in size.

The mirror on the passenger'sside is more convex than the mir-

ror on the driver's side, and thereforereflected objects are closer than theyappear. It may be difficult to estimatethe precise distance at which anothervehicle is following your car. This alsoapplies to the aspherical section of bothoutside mirrors.<

1 Front airbags on the driver and pas-senger sides

2 Head airbags on the driver and pas-senger sides, front

3 Side airbags on the driver and pas-senger sides, front and rear*

Protective effect

The front airbags provide protection inthe event of a head-on collision, wherethe restraining effect of the seat beltsalone would no longer be adequate. The head and side airbags protect youin the event of a side-on collision. Theairbag will protect the seat occupant'sbody in the side chest (thorax) area.

See page 43 for information about cor-rect seating position.

The airbags are not triggered off inminor accidents, in certain roll-

over situations, or if the car is struckfrom the rear.<

Do not apply adhesive or any sur-face material to the airbag covers

or modify them in any other way. Do notremove the airbag occupant restraintsystem. If the airbag occupant restraintsystem develops a fault, is shut downout of use or has been triggered off inan accident, have it checked, repairedand dismantled only by BMW Service.Never make any modifications to theindividual components of the system orits wiring. This includes the upholsteredcovers on the steering wheel, dash-board, side panels on front and reardoors and roof struts as well as downthe sides of the roof liners. Do notremove the steering wheel. In order tocomply with valid safety regulations, have airbag generators scrapped onlyby BMW Service. Any careless orunskilled interference with the systemcould lead to its failure or to accidentaltriggering off with the risk of injury. Donot touch the individual componentsimmediately after the system has beentriggered, as surfaces are hot and cancause burns.<

Even if all these instructions are com-plied with, injury to the face, arms orhands as a result of the airbag inflatingcannot be entirely ruled out, dependingon the circumstances in which an acci-dent occurs. If the car's occupants areunduly sensitive to the ignition andinflation noise generated by the airbagsystems, their hearing may be tempo-rarily affected.

Telltale light

The telltale light in the instru-ment cluster confirms that theairbag system is ready to oper-

ate (from ignition key position 1onwards).

System operational:

> The telltale light lights up when theignition key is turned to position 1 orfurther.

System defective:

> The telltale light does not go out afterthe engine has been started or comeson during the journey.

Have the system checked immediatelyby BMW Service if it develops a fault, because there is a risk of the airbagsnot inflating although the accidentimpact was in the relevant area and ofsufficient severity.

Child restraint systems

BMW Service can supply suitable childrestraint systems for every age group orweight class.

In your BMW, all the seats except thedriver's seat are basically suitable forthe installation of universal childrestraint systems for all age groupsapproved for the age group in question.

Note that if the centre rear seat is fittedwith a lap belt, it is not suitable forinstallation of a child restraint system.

If you intend travelling with a childseated in the front passenger seat, theairbags on the passenger side have tobe disabled before you install and use achild restraint system. BMW Service willgladly provide advice.

Do not permit children to occupythe front passenger's seat on their

own, sitting on another person's lap, orin a child restraint system, as there is adanger of injury if the airbag is trig-gered.If the car is fitted with side airbags forrear-seat passengers, make sure thatchildren do not lean out of their seatstoward the side trim panels, as other-wise serious injury could result if theairbags are triggered.Always comply with the instructionsissued by the manufacturer of the childrestraint system for installation and use,as otherwise the protective effect canbe impaired. After an accident, have all parts of thechild restraint system and the seat-beltsystem in question checked and, if nec-essary, replaced by BMW Service.<

How it works

You may often have wished that youcould modify the operation of certainfeatures of your car to suit your ownindividual preferences. When develop-ing the car, BMW therefore incorpo-rated a number of freely programmableoptions into the car, which BMWService will be happy to set in accord-ance with your preferences.

There are Car Memory and Key Memorysettings, the former relating to the caritself, the latter to your personalrequirements. You can have up to foursets of basic settings programmed infor the use of four different persons. This presupposes that each person hashis or her own remote control key.

By means of data exchange with thekey, the car identifies the user when thecar is unlocked and selects the pre-ferred settings.

Coloured adhesive labels are suppliedwith the keys so that you can identifythe master keys with remote-controlfunctionality.

What can be selected

BMW Service will gladly inform you ofthe facilities available with Car Memoryand Key Memory.

The key can only be inserted andremoved in this position.

After removing the key, turn the steer-ing wheel slightly if necessary until thesteering lock engages.

The radio remains operational forapproximately 20 minutes after the igni-tion has been switched off (ignition keyin the 0 position or removed). The radioswitches off with the ignition, but youcan switch it on again.

Automatic transmission cars:do not move the selector lever

away from position P, ignition key posi-tion 2, until the engine is running. Before the ignition key can be returnedto position 0 or pulled out, the auto-matic transmission selector lever mustbe moved to position P interlock.<

. " "

Do not allow the engine to warm up at astandstill, but drive off as soon as pos-sible, using moderate engine speeds.

Never run the engine in anenclosed space. The exhaust gas

contains carbon monoxide, which iscolourless and odourless, but highlytoxic. Inhaling exhaust gas constitutes asevere health risk and can lead to lossof consciousness with fatal conse-quences.Do not leave the car unattended withthe engine running, as it then consti-tutes a considerable potential hazard.Make sure that when driving or parkingthe car or when the engine is idling, nomaterial which could catch fire easily e.g. hay, leaves, grass etc. can comeinto contact with the hot exhaust sys-tem. It could ignite and cause a fire, with the risk of severe injuries or dam-age.<

Cars with spark-ignition engine

Do not depress the accelerator pedalwhen starting the engine.

Allow the starter motor to run for areasonable time, but not for more

than about 20 seconds. As soon as theengine fires, release the ignition key.<

If the engine does not start first time, forinstance if it is very cold or very hot:

> Depress the accelerator pedal half-way while starting the engine.

Cold starts at very low ambient temper-atures, below approximately 156(57), at high altitude, above 1000 m(330 ft):

> On the first occasion, take longerover the starting operation, approx.10 seconds

> Depress the accelerator pedal half-way while starting the engine.

Too frequent or lengthy operationof the starter at short intervals can

result in damage to the catalytic con-verter.<

Cars with diesel engine

When the engine is cold:

> Hold the ignition key in position 2until the "Preheat" telltale light goesout

> Start the engine. At extremely low temperatures, thestarter motor may have to be run for 0to 40 seconds.

When the engine is warm:

> If the "Preheat" telltale light does notcome on: the engine can be startedimmediately.

Movement of the accelerator pedal hasno influence on the starting process.

Bleeding the diesel fuel system:

Even if the fuel tank has been run dry,the fuel system does not normally needto be bled.

If you nevertheless encounter difficul-ties in starting the engine:

Run the starter motor for approx.20 seconds.

The principle

The sequential manual gearbox SMG isan automated manual transmission inwhich an electro-hydraulic system actu-ates the clutch and shifts gear.

You operate the SMG by means of aselector lever in the centre console andtwo shift paddles on the steering wheel.

It offers you the following functions:

> Sequential, automated gearshiftmode cruise mode

> Choice of two driving programs (nor-mal or sport) in sequential mode

> Acceleration assistant (launch con-trol)

> Automatic double declutching> Dependability of positive gearshifts> Automatic upshifts at maximumengine rpm

> Automatic downshifts at minimumengine rpm

> Kick-down function.

Selector lever positions

R: Reverse

N: Neutral

Forward position with touch-shift func-tions:

: Sequential mode

+: Upshifts in sequential mode

: Downshifts in sequential mode

C: Cruise mode.

The SMG is operational from ignitionkey position 2 on.

When the car is at a standstill, a safetyfunction requires you to depress thebrake pedal if you want to move theselector lever to a drive position withinapproximately 2 seconds of selectingneutral shiftlock function.

R Reverse

Engage this gear only when the car isstanding still.

N Neutral

Always move the selector lever to thisposition before starting the engine.

 Sequential mode

When you start the engine, the sequen-tial mode is always activated as soon asyou depress the brake pedal and movethe selector lever to the forward posi-tion.

C Cruise mode

All forward gears are shifted automati-cally in cruise mode.

To change from sequential mode tocruise mode: lightly press the selectorlever to the right toward "C".

Sharply press the accelerator all theway down for rapid acceleration (kick-down) when you want to overtake, for example.

Kick-down

You can achieve maximum accelerationand top speed using kick-down.

Press the accelerator pedal downbeyond the regular full-throttle position;increased resistance will be felt.

Shifting gear

Using the selector lever:

> Lightly press the selector lever in the"+" direction to shift up a gear

> Lightly press the selector lever in the"" direction to shift down.

Using the shift paddles on the steeringwheel:

> Pull either of the shift paddles to shiftup a gear

> Push either of the shift paddles toshift down a gear.

To accelerate from higher gears, e.g.for overtaking, shift down manually.

In the following situations, the SMG inthe sequential mode anticipates yourintentions:

> The SMG performs up-shifts anddown-shifts only at a suitable engineor road speed; for example, it will notshift down if the resulting enginespeed would be too high

>When you brake the car to a standstillfirst gear is selected automatically sothat all you have to do is press downgently on the accelerator pedal to pullaway after being stopped by a trafficlight, for example

>When the car's speed diminishes, without any action on your part thetransmission will shift down automati-cally just before each gear's respec-tive minimum speed is reached

> Under acceleration, the transmissiongear's respective minimum automati-cally shifts up through the gears aseach rpm limit is reached.

The principle

PDC assists you when reversing the carinto a parking space. An audible warn-ing signal tells you how far you are fromobstructions behind the car. To do this, four ultrasonic sensors in the backbumper measure the distance to thenearest object. The range of the sen-sors at the two rear corners endsapprox. 60 cm (approx. 2 ft) behind thebumper. The two centre sensors have arange of approx. 1.50 m (approx. 5 ft).

In ignition key position 2, the system isactivated automatically after approx.1 second when reverse gear is selectedor the automatic transmission selectorlever moved to R. It is switched offwhen the lever is moved out of reversegear or away from position R. If you aretowing a trailer, of course, the systemcannot make the appropriate measure-ments and therefore deactivates itselfas soon as the towbar is fitted into thetowing hitch.

Audible warning signals

The distance from an obstruction isindicated by an intermittent audible sig-nal. The closer the car approaches theobstruction, the more rapid thesequence of signals. When the distanceis less than 30 cm (approx. 12 in), thesignal becomes continuous.

The signal is interrupted after approx.3 seconds if the distance from theobstacle remains constant during thistime, for instance when reversing paral-lel to a wall.

If a continuous signal at a pitch higherthan usual is heard when the system isfirst activated, it is malfunctioning. Havethe cause traced and rectified by BMWService.

The PDC cannot act as a substi-tute for your personal assessment

of obstructions. The sensors have cer-tain dead areas in which objects cannotalways be detected. In addition, the

detection of obstacles can reach thephysical limits of ultrasonic measure-ment, e.g. trailer towbars and couplingsor thin and tapering objects.Note that loud sources of noise, forinstance if the volume of the radio is toohigh, could prevent you from hearingthe PDC signal.<

Keep the sensors clean and freefrom ice, so that they always oper-

ate reliably.Do not spray the sensors for any lengthof time with a high-pressure cleaningjet. Keep such jets at least 10 cm(approx. 4 in) away from the sensors.<

The principle

HDC is a system that reduces speed onsteep downhill gradients, making yourBMW even easier to control underthese conditions.

Without any intervention on your part, the car's speed is kept down to abouttwice walking pace.

You can activate HDC at speeds lessthan approximately 35 km/h (22 mph).On a descent, the car automaticallyreduces speed from under approx.35 km/h (22 mph) to about twice walk-ing pace approx. 12 km/h (7.5 mph) and then maintains this constant speed.

You can press the brake pedal or openthe throttle to vary the car's speed in arange from approximately 5 km/h(3 mph) to 25 km/h (15.5 mph).

You also have the option of setting aspeed in this range using the +/ but-tons of the cruise control system.

HDC is automatically deactivated whenthe car accelerates to a speed ofapproximately 60 km/h (37 mph).

The principle

RDC monitors tyre pressures at all fourwheels, both at a standstill and whenthe car is being driven. The systemreports any sudden loss of pressure inone or more tyres.

To enable the system to "recognise" thecorrect tyre pressures, first comparethese with the specified values in thetable, see page 24, and correct them ifnecessary. Then activate the system.

This warning light in the instru-ment cluster tells you if the tyrepressure departs from the cor-

rect value.

Initialising the system

1. Turn the ignition key to position 2,but do not start the engine

2. Keep the button pressed until thetelltale light on the instrument panelremains on for several seconds

3. After the car has been driven for sev-eral minutes, the RDC systemaccepts the current tyre pressures asthe nominal values which it is tomonitor.

Do not repeat this process until youhave corrected the tyre pressure. Oth-erwise RDC remains automatically inignition key position 2 and thereforeoperates during every journey.

If there is a loss of tyre pressure

If tyre pressure sinks significantly after aperiod (this is perfectly normal in alltyres), the yellow telltale light comes on.

This is to remind you that the tyre pres-sure should be corrected to the speci-fied value again as soon as possible.

If you are asked by the system tocheck tyre pressures shortly after

correcting them, the corrected pressurevalues were not plausible. Please checkthe tyre pressures again and correctthem to the values specified in the tyrepressure table. After this, reactivate thesystem.<

With a burst tyre

If a puncture or similar tyre failureoccurs, and pressure drops suddenly, the red warning light comes on. In addi-tion a warning signal is heard.

Immediately reduce speed and stop atthe first safe opportunity. Avoid pro-nounced braking and steering manoeu-vres while doing so. Change the defec-tive wheel with its tyre, see page 139.

The compact spare wheel is onlyintended for temporary use after a

tyre failure and therefore has no RDCelectronic monitoring function. Thespare wheel with the same dimensionsas the car's other wheels and tyres hasthe necessary RDC electronics fittedand, when fitted to the car, is also mon-itored when the system is active.<

The RDC system is unable to reg-ister sudden tyre damage caused

by external influences.<

Have your tyres changed by BMWService.

BMW Service has full information onhow to handle RDC and is equippedwith the necessary special tools.<

Faults

RDC can be subjected to interferenceby outside equipment or devices whichuse the same radio frequency.

While the fault persists, the yellowwarning light is on.

The warning light also comes on

> in the event of a system fault> if a wheel not equipped with RDC isfitted to the car

Air supply/blower

You can select blower speeds1 to 4. The greater the incom-ing flow of air, the more effec-tive heating and ventilation will

be. In position 0, the blower and theheating are switched off. The supply ofair is shut off in position 0.

Temperature

To raise the temperatureinside the car, turn to theright, red. The temperature ofthe air entering the car is

maintained at a constant level.

Air distribution

You can direct the flow of airtoward the windows ,toward the upper-body area

and into the footwell .Any intermediate setting is possible. Inthe position a small amount of aircontinues to reach the windows inorder to prevent them from foggingover.

Heated rear window

When the heated rear window isswitched on, the telltale light

comes on. The heated rear window isswitched off automatically.

If the outdoor temperature isbelow approx. 46 (397), the rear

window heater switches on automati-cally within 5 minutes of the enginebeing started.<

Air-conditioning mode

Air is cooled and dried andreheated to suit the temperature

setting.

Depending on weather conditions, thewindscreen may fog over momentarilywhen the engine is started. Switchingon the air conditioning helps preventthe windows misting over.

Moisture condensate forms whenthe air conditioning is in operation;

this condensation is discharged under-neath the car. Traces of water on theground are therefore normal.<

Recirculated air mode

If there are strong smells out-side the car, you can temporar-

ily switch off the supply of outside air.The air inside the car is then recircu-lated.

If the windows mist up in recircu-lating mode, switch this mode off

and, if necessary, also increase the air-flow.<

Press AUTO key 7 to switch on theautomatic mode. Select the interiortemperature which you find mostagreeable.

Details of the full range of settings andhow to obtain them are given below.

Your car is programmed so thatyour preferred automatic air con-

ditioning settings are called up when-ever you unlock the car with your per-sonal remote-control key.<

Automatic air distribution andsupply

The AUTO program handles thesetting of air distribution for you

and also adapts your temperature pref-erences to suit ambient conditions(summer, winter).

Individual air distribution

You can adjust air distributionand override the AUTO programif you prefer; this has no effecton automatic air supply. Air

flows to the windows , to the upper-body area , and to the footwell .

You can switch automatic air distribu-tion on again by pressing the AUTObutton.

Temperature

The displayed values are aguide to the actual interior tem-

perature. 226 (equivalent to 727) isrecommended as a pleasant setting, whether or not the air conditioning is inoperation. During the journey, the cho-sen temperature is reached as quicklyas possible in summer and in winter and maintained at a constant value.

You can change the unit of measure(6/7) of the reading, see page 75.

Air supply blower

You can vary the air supply bypressing the left or right half of

the button. This will shut down theautomatic air supply; the word AUTOdisappears from the display. The auto-matic air distribution function remains inoperation. You can switch automatic airsupply on again by pressing the AUTObutton.

If you press the left half of the button atthe lowest blower speed, all the dis-plays go out: the blower, heater and airconditioning are switched off and theair supply is closed. The system isswitched on again by pressing anyautomatic air conditioning button.

Defrosting and demistingwindows

This program removes ice andcondensation quickly from the

windscreen and from the side windows.

A special roof rack system is availableas an accessory for your BMW. If it isused, please comply with the installa-tion instructions supplied.

Mounting points

Access to the mounting points:

Use the tool supplied with the roof racksystem to open the caps, see arrow.

Loading and driving hints

Loaded roof racks significantly alter thedriving and steering characteristics ofyour car by raising the centre of gravity.

When loading the roof rack, ensure thatthe specified roof load limit, the car'sgross weight limit and the axle loadsare not exceeded. The relevant figuresare shown in the "Technical data" sec-tion, page 157.

The roof load must be uniformly distrib-uted and should not be too large inarea. Heavy items of luggage shouldalways be placed at the bottom. Makesure that there is sufficient clearancefor raising the sunroof and that noobjects extend back far enough to bestruck by the luggage compartment lidwhen it is opened.

Secure loads to the roof rack so thatthey cannot shift or fall off during thejourney, and thus endanger followingtraffic.

Drive smoothly and avoid violent accel-eration, braking or cornering. The roofrack and roof load increase the car'ssurface area exposed to the wind: fuelconsumption will be higher and theloads on the roof structure of the carmore severe.

Trailer tow hitch*

If a trailer tow hitch is fitted by the man-ufacturer, the vehicle will also beequipped with uprated suspension* atthe rear as standard.

handbook.book Page 108 Thursday, December 19, 2002 4:29 PM

Page 111: BMW 3 E46 Manual 1999-2004_Eng

109

If a trailer tow hitch is retrofitted, it mustbe of a type approved by BMW and beexpertly installed by BMW Service. It isbest to have uprated suspension fittedas well.

BMW does not approve any other sus-pension systems offered by the auto-motive trade.

See the manufacturer's instructions forinformation about upkeep and installa-tion of the removable tow hitch.

If a trailer tow hitch is installed, theself-regenerating action of the

rear bumper system may not be able totake effect.<

Nose weight

In Germany: a minimum nose weight of25 kg (55 lb) is stipulated by law.

Permissible nose weight, see page 157.

The trailer's nose weight affects thetowing vehicle, and must not lead to thecar's gross weight limit or rear axle loadlimit being exceeded if a trailer is beingtowed. The car's payload limit isreduced by the weight of the trailer towhitch and, if a trailer is being towed, byits nose weight. The gross weight limitfor the combined car and trailer mustnot be exceeded.

Towing a trailer

The permissible trailer load and noseweights (towbar downthrust) are statedin "Technical Data", see page 157. Thetrailer load limit is also entered in thecar's registration papers. Consult BMWService regarding increased trailerweights.

Loading:

When loading the trailer, make sure thatthe weight is kept as low as possibleand stowed if possible close to the axle.

A low centre of trailer gravity makes theoutfit much more stable and safe todrive.

Do not exceed either the trailer's grossweight or the specified trailer load limitfor the car. The smaller value is the limitwhich should be adhered to.

Gradients:

In the interests of safety and to avoidholding up other traffic, do not attemptto climb gradients steeper than 12%. Ifan application is made to tow a heaviertrailer, the limit is 8%, see page 157.

Downhill gradients:

Take particular care on downhill gradi-ents, because a trailer's tendency tofishtail, or swing from side to side, ismore pronounced on a downhill slope:

on the approach to the downslope, always shift down to the next-lowergear, if necessary as far as 1st gear, and drive down the hill slowly.

Maximum speed:

The maximum speed limit when towinga trailer is 80 km/h (50 mph) in Ger-many, and similar speed limits apply inother countries also.

If the trailer begins to swing from sideto side, the outfit can only be stabilisedby immediately and sharply applyingthe brakes. Do not try to counter thetrailer's action by turning the steeringwheel unless absolutely necessary, andkeep all movements of the steeringwheel as gentle as possible.

Tyre pressures:

Check the car's and the trailer's tyrepressures most carefully. For the trailer, comply with the manufacturer's recom-mendations.

Outside mirrors:

Legislation prescribes two outside mir-rors which bring both rear corners ofthe trailer into your field of view. Suita-ble mirrors can be obtained from BMWService.

Driving precautions

(!"

Please comply with the followinginstructions, which are intended toensure that your car achieves its opti-mum operating life and economy.

Engine and final drive

Up to 2000 km (approx. 1250 miles):

Drive at varying road and enginespeeds, but do not exceed the follow-ing maximum values:

> Cars with spark-ignition engine4-cylinder engine: 4500 rpm or150 km/h (approx. 90 mph)6-cylinder engine: 4500 rpm or160 km/h (approx. 100 mph)

> Cars with diesel engine: 3500 rpm or150 km/h (approx. 90 mph).

Avoid full throttle and do not use theautomatic transmission kick-down.

From a distance reading of 2000 km(approx. 1250 miles) onwards, engineand road speeds can be graduallyincreased.

Comply with these running-in instruc-tions again if an exchange engine orfinal drive is fitted later in the car's life.

Tyres

New tyres do not achieve their full roadgrip immediately, for production rea-sons. You should therefore drive in arestrained manner for the first 300 km(approx. 200 miles).

Brakes

Brake pads and discs do not achieve afavourable wear and contact patternuntil the car has covered about 500 km(approx. 300 miles).

Clutch

The clutch has to be bedded in overabout 500 km (approx. 300 miles).Engage the clutch gently during thisrunning-in period.

9"

Brakes: do not rest your foot onthe brake pedal while the car is in

motion. Even slight continuous pres-sure on the brake pedal could causeoverheating, brake pad wear or evenbrake system failure.Aquaplaning: when driving on wet orslushy surfaces, reduce speed to pre-vent a wedge of water from formingbetween the tyre and the road. This sit-uation means that the tyre can actuallylose contact completely with the roadsurface, so that the car can neither besteered nor can the brake be properlyapplied.Water on the road: when there is wateron the roads, only drive through to amax. depth of 30 cm (12 in), and nofaster than a walking pace, otherwisedamage to the engine, electrical systemand transmission may be caused.Rear-window shelf: do not place heavyor hard objects on the shelf, or thesecould injure the car's occupants whenthe brakes are applied.Coat hooks: items of clothing hung fromthe hooks must not obstruct the driver'sview. Do not hang heavy objects fromthe hooks, otherwise they could endan-ger the car's occupants in the event ofsudden braking or avoidance action.<

The principle

ABS prevents the wheels from lockingwhen the brakes are applied, and thusincreases active safety.

With ABS in action, the car achieves theshortest possible braking distances forthe prevailing conditions straight-linebraking or cornering, on asphalt, ice,wet roads etc.

Braking with ABS

You use ABS most effectively by apply-ing maximum brake pressure in situa-tions which call for this (full braking).

The brake pedal pulsates and the noiseof the hydraulic control system is audi-ble, warning the driver that the ABS isactive.

Dynamic Brake Control DBC

DSC incorporates the DBC functional-ity, see page 79.

When you apply the brakes rapidly thissystem automatically ensures maximumbrake-servo boost, thus helping mini-mise braking distance in an emergency. The advantages of ABS are also uti-lised.

While braking is in progress, do notreduce the pressure applied to thebrake pedal. DBC is deactivated whenyou release the brake pedal.

Cornering Brake Control CBC

CBC is a development based on ABS.When the brakes are applied on a cor-ner when lateral acceleration is high, orduring a lane change, it furtherimproves the car's stability and makes iteasier to steer.

6

Brake fluid level

If the brake fluid level is too low and ifbrake pedal travel is longer than usual, one of the two hydraulic brake circuitsmay have failed.

Visit your nearest BMW Service. When driving the car in this condi-

tion, note that higher brake pedal pres-sure and longer brake pedal travel maybe necessary. Modify your driving styleaccordingly.<

Disc brakes

If the car covers only short distances, stands out of use for lengthy periodsand is only used infrequently or gently, corrosion and dirt will affect the brakediscs and pads more severely, becausethe minimum loads needed to achievethe desired self-cleaning effect of thedisc brakes were not reached.

When the brakes are applied, corrodeddiscs tend to judder, and even lengthybrake applications usually fail to elimi-nate this effect entirely.

In damp weather or heavy rain it isadvisable to apply the brakes from timeto time. When doing so, make sure thatno other road-user is endangered. Theresulting heat dries the brake discs andpads. Full braking power will subse-quently be available when needed.

When descending long or steep hills, select the gear or range which calls fora minimum amount of braking. Thisavoids brake overload. Bear the engine-speed limits in mind: see page 70.

Never drive with the clutch pedaldepressed, with the shift lever or

selector lever* in neutral, or while theengine is switched off, otherwiseengine braking action will not bepresent with the transmission in neutraland there will be no power assistancefor the brakes and steering while theengine is switched off.BMW 325xi, 330xi, 330xd: always havethe brakes checked by BMW Service,as otherwise parts of the all-wheel drivecould be damaged.<

Brake pads

For your own safety: use onlybrake pads approved for your car

by the manufacturer. The manufacturercannot assess the suitability of unap-proved brake pads and therefore can-not warrant road safety.<

Wheels and tyres

)!

Information for your safety

The factory-approved radial-ply (bracedtread) tyres have been chosen to matchyour car's performance and to ensuredriving safety and the desired standardof ride comfort.

The condition of the tyres and mainte-nance of the correct tyre pressures notonly influence tyre life but are also deci-sive factors in ride quality and above allin road safety.

Incorrect pressures are often a cause oftyre problems. They also have a consid-erable effect on the roadholding of yourBMW.

Check tyre pressures regularly(see page 24) including your

BMW's compact or full-size sparewheel at least every two weeks andbefore you start a long journey. Incor-rect tyre pressures can adversely affectthe car's roadholding and cause tyredamage, which could result in an acci-dent.<

 # )

Tyre tread tyre damage

Inspect the tyres frequently for damage, the presence of foreign objects, unu-sual wear and sufficient tread depth.

Tread depth should, if possible, not beallowed to drop below 3 mm (approx.1/8 in), despite the fact that Europeanlegislation, for example, specifies aminimum tread depth of only 1.6 mm(approx. 1/16 in). Below a tread depthof 3 mm (approx. 1/8 in) there is a riskof aquaplaning at fairly high roadspeeds even if the water is not verydeep. There are wear indicators in thetread (see arrows) at points around thecircumference of the tyre, as indicatedby the letters "TWI" for Tread WearIndicator on the shoulder of the tyre.

They become visible when the treadwears to 1.6 mm (approx. 1/16 in), indi-cating that the minimum tread depthallowed by law has been reached.

Do not continue driving with a flattyre. If air pressure is lost from a

tyre, this seriously affects the car's han-dling and braking, and could cause thedriver to lose control. Avoid overloadingthe car, as this could cause the tyres'load capacity limit to be exceeded. Oth-erwise you could overheat the tyres andcause internal damage to them in theshort to medium term. This could lead to sudden pressureloss.Unusual vibration while the car is beingdriven could indicate a tyre fault orsome other defect on your car. This canbe caused by driving over kerbstones, for example. The same applies to anyother unusual road behaviour, such aspulling severely to the right or left. Insuch cases, reduce speed immediately.

Proceed carefully to the nearest BMWService or tyre dealer, or have the cartowed there so that it can be checkedor its wheels and tyres inspected. All forms of tyre damage, which could inthe worst case lead to sudden and totalloss of pressure, represent a risk ofserious or even fatal injury to the car'soccupants and to all other road users.<

To maintain the car's good road behav-iour, always fit tyres of the same makeand tread pattern to all wheels.

Do not use retreaded tyres, asthese could have adverse effects

on the car's safety. They may differ ininternal construction or have aged suffi-ciently to cast doubt on their durabil-ity.<

= )

Age of tyres

A tyre's date of manufacture is shownas part of the inscription on the tyrewall:

DOT 0802 means that the tyre wasmanufactured in week 8 of 2002.

BMW recommends tyre replacementafter not more than 6 years, even iftyres up to 10 years old may still besuitable.

Safety tyres*

A safety tyre consists of the self-sup-porting tyre and a special wheel rim.The tyre is reinforced, so even if itdeflates it remains controllable and thecar is conditionally drivable. The car isequipped with a tyre pressure monitor-ing system (RDC), which indicates tyredeflation.

For further details on the tyre pressuremonitoring system RDC, see page 84.

Choosing the correct tyres

Use only wheels and tyresapproved by BMW for your vehi-

cle, because even if the nominal sizesare the same, manufacturing tolerancesand other factors could cause the tyresto contact the bodywork and this, inturn, could result in serious accidents. IfBMW has not approved the wheels andtyres it cannot assess their suitability orprovide any guarantee of road safety.<

For each size of tyre BMW tests certainmakes, and approves those that it certi-fies as roadworthy. You can obtaininformation on approved makes fromBMW Service. Always comply withnational regulations: some countries, for example, require special entries inthe vehicle's registration papers.

The correct wheel and tyre combi-nation has an effect on various

systems which could otherwise mal-function, for example ABS, AGS,ASC+T/DSC and ADB/ADB-X/DBC.For this reason, only use tyres of thesame make and tread design and, forexample after a tyre failure, have theapproved combination of wheel andtyre fitted to the car again as soon aspossible.<

Tyre storage

Store wheels and tyres in a cool, dryand preferably dark place when not inuse. Protect tyres against contamina-tion from oil, grease and fuel.

' )

The correct tyres

BMW recommends you to fit wintertyres (M+S radial-ply) if the car is usedfor driving in wintery conditions.Although there are tyres with an M+Smarking for use all the year round, andtheir performance in winter is betterthan that of summer tyres with H, V, W,Y or ZR speed codes, they do not nor-mally match the performance of wintertyres.

In the interests of reliable directionalstability and steerability, fit winter tyresof the same make and tread pattern toall four road wheels.

Note the speed limit applicable tothese tyres

In Germany: a warning notice statingthe maximum permitted speed withwinter tyres fitted must be displayed inthe driver's field of view if the car iscapable of a speed higher than thatpermitted for the winter tyres (pleasecheck for similar local legislation). Tyredealers and BMW Service points cansupply these labels.

Tyre condition and tyre pressures

Below a tread depth of 4 mm (3/16 in),winter tyres become noticeably lesssuitable for winter driving conditionsand should therefore be replaced forsafety reasons.

Keep to the specified tyre pressuresand have the wheels and tyres rebal-anced each time the wheels arechanged or new tyres fitted.

Fine link BMW snow chains may be fit-ted to either summer or winter tyres, but only to both rear wheels.

BMW 325xi, 330xi, 330xd: only underextreme circumstances vehicle stuckon one side or if a tyre is inaccessible is it permissible to fit a chain to one rearwheel for a short time.

When fitting, comply with the manufac-turer's instructions.

Checking engine oil level

1. Make sure the car is standing level2. Switch off the engine, which should

be at its regular operating tempera-ture

3. After about 5 minutes, pull out thedipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth, a paper tissue or similar

4. Carefully push the dipstick fully intoits tube, then pull it out again

5. The oil level must be between thetwo marks on the dipstick.

Like fuel consumption, engine oil con-sumption depends on driving style andoperating conditions.

The gap between the two notches onthe dipstick is equivalent to about 1 litre(1.8 Imp. pints) of oil. Do not fill beyondthe upper mark on the dipstick. Addingtoo much oil will harm the engine.

Adding engine oil

Do not add oil until the oil level hasdropped to just above the lower markon the dipstick, but do not permit the oillevel to drop below this mark.

BMW engines are designed not toneed separate additives in the

engine oil, and indeed adding thesesubstances could even be harmful incertain circumstances. The sameapplies to the manual transmission, automatic transmission, final drive andpower steering.<

In laboratory tests, prolongedcontact with used oils has caused

cancer. For this reason, always washthe affected skin areas thoroughly withsoap and water after work.Keep all oils, greases etc. in a placewhich is inaccessible to children andalways read and comply with warningson the containers.<

When disposing of used oil, com-ply with the relevant environmen-

tal protection laws.<

Approved engine oils

The quality of the engine oil is a deci-sive factor for the correct operation andlong life of your car's engine. BMW hasconducted extensive tests beforeapproving certain grades of engine oil.

BMW Service can provide detailsof the oils specifically approved by

BMW for your car's engine.<

Alternative oils

If, in exceptional cases, you are unableto purchase one of these grades of oil,you can top up the oil level in betweenoil changes, if only a small amount of oilis needed, with other oils. One of thefollowing categories must be printed onthe container of the oil you use:

Spark-ignition engines

> Preferred: BMW Longlife-01;or, for BMW 316i, 318i,BMW Longlife-01 FE

> Alternatively: BMW Longlife-98,BMW Longlife or ACEA A3.

Checking coolant level

Correct coolant level with engine cold, approx. 206 (687):

1. Turn the cap of the expansion tankslightly counter-clockwise until itstarts to open, then allow the pres-sure to escape before opening it fully

2. The coolant level is correct when theupper end of the red float rod is levelwith the edge of the filler pipe or pro-truding by no more than 2 cm(3/4 in), in other words as far as thesecond mark on the float rod, seediagram beside filler neck

3. Top up the coolant if necessary. Topup slowly until the correct level isreached do not overfill.

When disposing of used long-lifeantifreeze and corrosion inhibitor,

comply with the relevant environmentalprotection laws.<

Maintenance

6' .)

The BMW Maintenance System isdesigned to uphold the car's roadsafety and operating reliability and tosave the customer as much money aspossible.

Please remember that regular mainte-nance is not only essential to ensurethat your car remains safe, but also toenhance its resale value.

Service interval indicator

Whereas conventional systems call formaintenance when a fixed distance inkilometres/miles has been covered, theBMW Maintenance System has formany years now taken the car's operat-ing conditions into account as well, since one kilometre is by no means thesame as another. 100,000 kilometres

completed exclusively in the form ofshort journeys cannot be equated with100,000 kilometres made up of longmain-road journeys only.

The maintenance routines based onactual use of the car consist of the OilService and Inspections I and II.

The principle of determining mainte-nance intervals according to load effec-tively covers all the operating condi-tions to which the car is likely to beexposed. Cars used very infrequently far less than 10,000 km (approx.6000 miles) per year should nonethe-less have their engine oil changed atleast every 2 years, since engine oilages regardless of the loads imposedon it.

Service Booklet

For further information on maintenancepoints and the scope of maintenancework, please refer to the car's ServiceBooklet.

Depending on the circumstances inwhich the car is used, it may be worth-while to inspect it for damage causedby stones flung up from the road, inorder to guard against subsequent cor-rosion.

Have maintenance and repairwork carried out by BMW Service.

Make sure that maintenance work isconfirmed in the Service Booklet after ithas been carried out. These entries areevidence that your car has beenserviced regularly and correctly, andare also the basis of any warrantyclaims.<

Safety precautions in the event ofa puncture or tyre failure:

Park the car as far as possible from thetraffic flow, and on a firm surface.Switch on the hazard warning flashers.Engage the steering lock in the straight-ahead position, apply the handbrakeand select first or reverse gear or selec-tor lever position P.All occupants must leave the car and beled to a point where they are notexposed to risk, for example behind acrash barrier at the side of the road.If necessary, set up the warning triangleor a flashing warning light at a sufficientdistance to the rear. Comply withnational legislation.Change a wheel only on a flat, level andhigh-grip surface. If the surface is softor slippery (snow, ice, tiles etc.), the caror the supporting jack could slip awayto one side.Position the car's jack on a firm surface.Never place wooden blocks or similarunder the jack, or the maximum liftingcapacity may be exceeded. When the car has been jacked up, donot lie under it or start the engine sinceeither could lead to potentially fatalaccidents.<

> Spare wheel or compact spare wheel stowed beside the jackUnscrew the wing nut, see arrow, byhand, remove the retainer and lift outthe wheel

>Wheel stud wrench in the car'stoolkit, under the luggage compart-ment lid, see page 134.

Procedure

1. Note the safety precautions on theprevious page

2. Prevent the car from rolling away:place the wheel chock behind thefront wheel on the side opposite towhere the wheel is to be removed(or in front of the front wheel on a

downhill gradient). If the car cannotbe moved to a point on a lesssevere gradient, you must protect itreliably against rolling away

3. Full-width wheel covers*: insert fin-gers into the vent holes and pull thecover off

4. Slacken the wheel studs by 1/2turn. If the car has light-alloywheels*, see the description oflockable studs on page 143

5. Offer the jack up to the mountingpoint nearest to the wheel that is tobe removed, see arrows, with thebase of the jack vertically beneaththe mounting point and with itsentire surface in contact with theground; when the jack is raised byturning the handle, its head mustenter the rectangular recess in themounting point, see detail in nextpicture

6. Continue to turn the crank handleuntil the wheel you wish to changeis lifted clear of the ground

7. Take out the wheel studs andremove the wheel

8. Remove heavy dirt deposits fromthe wheel and hub contact facesand clean the wheel studs

9. Fit the spare wheel or compactspare wheel, insert at least twoscrews on opposite sides of thehub and screw them in

10. Insert and screw in the remainingwheel studs, then tighten them all, working across the hub rather thanround it

11. Lower the car and remove the jack12. Firmly tighten the studs alternately

on opposite sides of the hub

13. Full-width wheel covers*: place thecover in position so that the valvecutout, see arrow, is aligned withthe tyre valve, then press the coveron to the wheel with both hands

14. Correct the tyre pressure at theearliest opportunity.Cars with tyre pressure control(RDC):After fitting the spare wheel andcorrecting the tyre pressure, reacti-vate the system; see page 84.

Prevent dirt from entering the tyrevalves by attaching screw-on dustcaps. Dirt in the tyre valve can oftenlead to a gradual loss of pressure.

Use only the genuine BMW full-width wheel cover, otherwise the

cover may work loose. The full-widthwheel cover must not be attached tothe compact spare wheel, otherwise itcould be damaged.<

Use the jack only for wheel-changing. Never attempt to raise a

different type of vehicle or any otherload with the jack, or injury and damageto property could result. For safety reasons, have the wheel studtightening torque checked withoutdelay, using a suitable calibrated torquewrench correct tightening torque =100 Nm.<

When replacing a wheel in the sparewheel well, make sure that the centralthreaded rod in the well is not bent ordamaged.

If the car is fitted with alloy wheels notof original BMW pattern, note that dif-ferent wheel studs may be needed.

Have a flat tyre repaired as soon aspossible, and the wheel and tyre rebal-anced before fitting.

Only BMW-approved balance weightsfor alloy wheels are to be used on theblack-painted aluminium (lightweight)spare wheel. Do not attempt to usehammer-on steel balance weights onthese wheels.

Driving with the compact sparewheel fitted

Drive very carefully and do not exceed aroad speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).

You must expect the car's road behav-iour to be different, for example brakingaction, braking distances or differentself-steering effects when close to thehandling limit.

These changes in road behaviourbecome more evident if the car's otherwheels are fitted with winter tyres.

Only one compact spare wheel isto be fitted at a time. Fit a conven-

tional wheel and tyre again at the earli-est possible opportunity. Make surethat the tyre pressures are correct: seepage 24.<

The symbol identifying safety tyres is acircle with the letters RSC (short for"Runflat System Component") on thetyre sidewall. A safety tyre consists ofthe self-supporting tyre and a specialwheel rim. The tyre is reinforced, soeven if it deflates it remains controllableand the car is conditionally drivable. The car is equipped with a tyre pres-sure monitoring system (RDC), whichindicates tyre deflation.

On account of the reinforcedsides, you cannot usually tell

whether a safety tyre is deflated simplyby looking at it.<

With a burst tyre

If a puncture or similar tyre failureoccurs, the red warning icon lights up.In addition a warning signal is heard.

For further details on the tyre pressuremonitoring system RDC, see page 84.

Carefully reduce speed to below80 km/h (50 mph), avoiding pronouncedbraking and steering manoeuvres whiledoing so.

If you cannot immediately see whichtyre is defective, check the pressure inall four tyres.

Have a new tyre fitted by BMWService. For safety reasons, do

not have safety tyres repaired. BMWService has full information on how tohandle safety tyres and is equippedwith the requisite special tools.<

Please consult your BMW Servicewhen it is time to have summer or

winter tyres fitted.<

Resuming a journey despite adamaged tyre

Under certain circumstances anddepending on load and the severity oftyre damage, a car fitted with safetytyres can be driven at speeds up to

Maintenance

The battery is completely maintenance-free, which means that in moderate cli-matic conditions the original acid fillingis sufficient for the battery's entire oper-ating life.

Please consult BMW Service ifyou have any questions about the

battery. The battery is completely main-tenance-free, so the data below is forinformation only.<

Do not disconnect battery leadswhile the engine is running, other-

wise excess current will destroy thevehicle electronics system.<

Recharging the battery

Always charge the battery in the carwith the engine stationary, using theconnections in the engine compart-ment. For the positions of these con-nections, see the section on jump start-ing on page 145.

Dispose of old batteries only to anauthorised collecting point or

return them to a BMW Service. Batter-ies filled with acid should be trans-ported and stored upright. Protect bat-teries against falling over when intransit.<

$!

The fuses are located behind a panel inthe glove box; the panel is held in placeby two quick-release latches.

Do not repair burnt out fuses orreplace them with fuses with dif-

ferent colours or ampere ratings, other-wise overloaded electrical wires cancause a fire in the vehicle.<

Do not use the spray products sold asstarting aids.

If the car's own battery is flat, theengine of your BMW can be started byusing two jump leads from anothervehicle's battery. Conversely, you canalso jump-start another vehicle withyour BMW. Use only jump leads withfully insulated battery-post clips.

Do not touch any electrically liveparts when the engine is running,

or a fatal accident may occur. Do notdepart from the procedure describedbelow, otherwise personal injury couldresult or one or both vehicles be dam-aged.<

1. Check that the other vehicle's batteryhas a voltage of 12 V. This informa-tion is on the battery label

2. Switch off the engine of the donorvehicle and all consumers in bothvehicles with the exception of thehazard warning lights of the donorvehicle

For towing, either use a towbar or anylon rope or tape; since the latter areresilient, they help to avoid sudden ten-sile loads.

Towing eye

The screw-in towing eye is kept in thetoolkit and must always be carried onthe car. It can be screwed in at the frontor the rear of the car, and is only to beused for towing on a firm road surface.

Access to the holes for the towingeye

Front:

Press the cover off by inserting ascrewdriver into the cutout at the top.

Rear:

Press the cover off by inserting ascrewdriver into the cutout at the top.

Screw the towing eye in fully toavoid the risk of its thread being

damaged.Do not tow the car away or lash it downat any of the suspension components,as these could be damaged and renderthe car unsafe when it is subsequentlydriven.<

Avoid offset towing and make surethat the tow-rope is taut when the

towing vehicle pulls away.<

Using a towbar

The towing eyes of both vehiclesshould be on the same side.

If it is impossible to avoid attaching thetowbar at an angle, note the following:

> Towbar clearance may be restrictedwhen cornering

> The angled towbar generates lateralforces.

Do not tow a vehicle heavier thanyour own, as there is otherwise a

risk of losing control.<

Tow-starting

Cars with catalytic converter shouldonly be tow-started if the engine iscold. It is always preferable to use jumpleads.

1. Switch on the hazard warning flash-ers (comply with local regulations)

2. Turn the ignition key to position 23. Select 3rd gear4. Keep the clutch pedal down. When

the car is moving, gradually releasethe clutch pedal. After the engine hasfired and is running, depress theclutch pedal again

5. Switch off the hazard warning flash-ers.

Fuel consumption is determined according to a standard test method 93/116/EU. It is not the same as the average fuelconsumption in practice, which depends on a great many different factors such as driving style, load, road condition, traf-fic density and flow, weather, tyre pressures etc. Engine power output and road performance data are measured in theconditions laid down by 80/1269 EU and DIN 70 020 with the car to standard specification. This standard specifies thepermitted tolerances. Additional equipment on the car may have quite a significant influence on both performance and fuelconsumption, since it usually affects the car's weight and cx value (drag coefficient), for instance roof rack, wider tyres, additional mirrors etc.BMW 325xi, 330xi, 330xd: power can be tested only on a suitable dynamometer.
