Dear Western Queens, is is the time of year the holiday spirit comes out in all of us. Either we’re happy to see family
or happy to give and receive gifts. e city turns into a spectacle from ice skating rinks to theatre to Christmas trees and holiday lights. I’m thrilled to be creating a new local destination for the holidays. LIC Flea is launching its rst Indoor Holiday Market for 3 consecutive Saturdays and Sundays starting December 7 & 8. I hope you can all come and enjoy the great shopping supporting local vendors. Besides shopping, great eats and holiday cocktails we will also be o ering free pictures with Santa Claus, you can buy a Christmas Tree from 2 farmers who actually live in Astoria (and will deliver it to your home), free bowling at our indoor lane courtesy of JIB Lanes, pro soccer player signings from the NY Cosmos and so much more. I hope your holiday destination will be one locally and supporting all the great businesses Astoria and the surrounding neighborhoods have to o er. Wishing you a happy holiday and all the best for 2014!
See you next year,Josh

It is not your typical steakhouse. e newest arrival in the M. Wells family of restaurants is anything and everything besides just a steakhouse.
e wallpaper is a brilliant metallic tapestry strewn with hidden fowl. Where the ceiling turns upward into skylights, the patterns of the paper stretch out into larger beasts, owers, and plants. It’s as if the entire ceiling is swimming around, and the four vaulted skylights are like escape ways for the hidden creatures to retreat back into the wild—or to simply sit perched staring down at curious carnivores and pescetarians.
In a Napoleonic tradition of aristocracy, corks—still attached to the severed neck of the champagne bottle—clunk to the oor at the swing of a sabre. A couple at the Chef ’s Counter sips glasses of Nero Né while trout swim beneath the glass countertop. Beside the
trout tank sit four panoramas—two yet-to-be decorated. One of the designs—perhaps representing Chef Hugue Dufour and his wife, Sarah Obraitis—is of a couple relaxing by their cabin in the mountains, surrounded by grapes and mushrooms, and decorations of nuts and berries, as if to celebrate the fruits of their labor. e entire space is like a breathtaking tribute to the dichotomy between work and play. From
the outside, the space is merely an old rundown garage, while in actuality it is an epicurean sanctuary on the inside.
e menu is equally brilliant and ba ing. Appetizers can easily pass for full meals, and there is so much more than simply steak—though it is very much a presence, with or without the bone, intended to serve just one, or an entire party.
My experiences there have been somewhat surreal, as is everything touched by the chef and his wife.
My rst visit, a bag secured by a drawstring was the rst thing presented at the table, and we stare at it, almost waiting for something to

crawl out. Nothing does—of course—and so we pass out the warm pretzel rolls which are served with a tiny pitcher of mustard, as well as a warm pat of butter.
From the raw bar, we order the ‘Dog Bowl’, which essentially could have served as our meal. e lobster tails were exquisitely smoky and sweet after being grilled, then slathered in an herbed aioli. Pickled smelt lay across potato wa es with crème fraiche, smothered in salty
golden orbs of trout roe. Hackleback caviar is pressed into sheets and served on brioche like tea sandwiches. A decadent lobster roll arrives next, dripping in tarragon aioli. Escargot is lined up and roasted alongside bone marrow.
Potato gnocchi are stu ed with foie gras medallions, and poutine is served with straws of crispy golden French fries loaded with melted cheese curds, all drizzled in brown gravy. e Grassfed Cowboy is as exquisite as any steak
I have ever enjoyed, the juices bursting in my mouth as I bite. And I have never, ever had potatoes like these before—almost two parts butter and cheddar to a single portion of spud—stringing from the spoon playfully as I draw my fork.
e meal is outstanding in every possible way. And there are so many things that still I want to try. e beef butter sounds divine. e Caesar salad looks remarkable, covered in a snowfall of pecorino shavings. At just $15, the bone-in burger looks delicious. And the Coquilles St. Féréol is supposed to be like a seafood shepherd’s pie, with scallops buried beneath an afghan of mashed potatoes which have been carefully piped onto the plate.
We pay the bill without even considering dessert. Our waitress, who has been incredible, smiles as she hands me the leftovers in a brown bag. “I snuck in a piece of cheese cake,” she winks, which I had been eye-ing on the dessert cart, swimming in a vanilla bean sauce. I suck my stomach in, to no avail, and step out into the cold street and turn the corner. Behind me is just a closed, rusty garage door, and I am already wandering if that meal truly just happened.

One of the greatest joys of the holiday season is the rich tradition of sharing recipes from throughout the years, passing along favorites from mother to daughter. Christine Chellos, one of the owners at The Thirsty Koala in Astoria, recently had the opportunity to bring her mother from Sydney, Australia to visit, share recipes, and travel a little bit. So I sat down with Christine to discuss the visit, and share some of the stories that have made their relationship so very special.
Her mother, Christina Chellos, is from Sydney, though originally born in Pavlia—a small village in the South of Greece. Though she retired at sixty –four, she now does charity work throughout Australia. Sydney has been her home for over 54 years, though her Greek heritage is still very much alive. “She came to Australia when she was 17,” explains Christine, “finished straight out of design school in Greece She only did 18 months and then came to Australia to be with two of her brothers. She was introduced to my father after 5 weeks they were married and stayed married for 33 years.” “Originally she studied to be a fashion designer, and worked in this industry up to when she was 30 years old. She ended up in working with my fathers family in restaurants because of the flexibility it gave her at the time to look after the kids.”
“My mum had me at 18 years old, and then my brother at 27 years old. At the age of 34 my mum ended up with another 3 children (for a
total of 5 children) ages 4, 3 & 18 months old who were my biological 1st cousins.”
“Originally she was helping my father’s brother in raising them because their mother passed away at the age of 27. My uncle left Australia and got remarried a few years after, and left the kids with my parents. My mother changed her career at that point, and started to work in restaurants for my father’s family as it gave her more flexible hours. She worked full time raising 5 kids as well.” “When my mum turned 46 she lost my father—who at the time was 47 years old—however she still ended up raising 5 children. She took over my father’s business and continued to work at this point managing a large restaurant and fast food store in Sydney. My mum became mother, guardian, and father to these kids. He and mum
ended up making sure that they all had weddings, graduations—life’s important moments.”
In five words, Christine would describe her mom as exceptional, giving, strong, smart and supportive. And just like her, Christine considers herself a people’s person with strong interpersonal skills. When asked what about her mother she wishes she could better embody, Christine replies, “her overall strength in handling life’s ups and downs.”
For a taste of the recipes her mother shared during her visit, swing by The Thirsty Koala, which has been running some of them as specials this entire past month. From meatballs to spinach pies, it’s Greek... from Australia. And it’s all simply delicious.

We are driving in a Dodge Stratus to a town in Brooklyn called Weeksville, preparing for a day of feasting. But we have to rst pick up ‘the goods’ in Brighton Beach. Natasha’s brother, Sasha, is driving, while Natasha reminisces about the days she and her brother rst moved to the states. She speaks of her father trading his collection of paintings, the Kremlin hidden beneath a blanket of snow, a kind man who saw an artist in her father once he was in America, and she speaks of pastries. We pull up to a stand on a street corner somewhere on Neptune, and I am overcome with smells of yeast and pickled sh. Sasha, in his sailor hat, is practically skipping in glee. is is the rst Monday he and his sister have had time to relax together in a long, long time. I am just thrilled they have invited me along.
We move to a supermarket down the street to get cans of sh, jarred caviar, beet and potato salad, and even more pastries. My brain is ooded with sights and smells entirely foreign to me, and I start taking pictures. e shopkeeper notices, and charges straight at me and I brace to get tackled. He calms down when I assure him I am not investigating. “We need to get some vodka now”, Sasha laughs, and so we move to the liquor store, which is full of bottles I have never seen.
At the apartment, we celebrate with all of the avors Natasha and her brother loved as children. We feast on cod liver and smelt in stewed tomatoes, salmon roe and blinis, roasted eggplant and potato cakes, goulash, gizzards, and pattypan squash. All in all I count twenty-nine dishes on the table, and we practically devour them all. And then we all slide down in our chairs while Sasha sings to us a Russian lullaby on his guitar. It has been a perfect day.
ree months later, I receive an email from Natasha inviting me to try her newest tasting menu at Bear Restaurant. She thinks it is kind of special, which means it is going to be outrageously delicious, because Natasha doesn’t usually brag. I am so excited. To eat with Natasha is to know her. e daughter of an artist, she uses ingredients like a paint palate, mixing tastes and pairing avors in breathtakingly inventive ways.
e rst course is warm brioche with a parsley garlic butter paste, tongue with horseradish and potato sauce, all for dipping and inventing bites in a giant bowl of borscht. Next comes a sh aspic, followed by tongue and blood headcheese with sharp beet horseradish and marinated mushrooms, a liverwurst paté, and bagel crisps. Tru e crepes arrive next, followed by tomato-crusted branzino, dumplings with chicken heart, and even a pumpkin pappardelle. e meal rolls out like a timeline of the in uences on Natasha throughout the years, and my stomach is very happy—perfectly content. We nish with a hunters stew of goat, oxtail and lamb, and I am ready to go to sleep. “Would you like something for dessert?” Natasha asks. “Nope—that was absolutely perfect.”

A HOLIDAY PIN UP
SH

PIN
G
Nestled away on 22nd Street lies the solution to all your holiday dressing needs. Pin Up Queens opened in September 2012 with the idea of providing the nest in vintage apparel. Open from noon to seven o’clock ursday through Sunday, and by appointment Monday through Wednesday, Jessica Fechner and Giana Stanigar have over 20 years combined experience in vintage clothing.
“Pin Up Queens carries a wide variety of styles, and we hand-select each piece in the shop based on uniqueness and quality. We
have everything from sparkly jewels and accessories to evening gowns; we’ve got you covered no matter what your size and budget,” says Stanigar.
e ladies are also there to help with styling suggestions. “Always choose clothes and accessories that make you feel great about how you look. Channel your favorite style icons with your look, and don’t be afraid to make bold decisions like mixing patterns and textures, or buying a couple outrageous statement pieces that people will remember.
Invest in a few solid pieces that you’ll keep forever, and have fun with everything else,” suggests Stanigar.
e holidays are the perfect time to be the most glamorous version of you. Stop by Pin Up Queens for a unique opportunity to shop from a di erent era.

BORO: What is a ‘trappist style’ gastropub? Matthew: A Trappist-style Gastropub follows in the tradition of Trappist monks using local, fresh food and incorporating beer into their recipes. From the beer batter and the mussels in beer to our Oatmeal Stout Panna Cotta, craft beer is a major ingredient in most of our dishes.
BORO: Who are the owners (who are you?) Matthew: We have four co-owners (two couples): Tom Matthew: Davies and Carrie Spiller, and Carlos Beltran and Jennifer Waite. Along with Will and our fantastic servers and bartenders, that’s our team!
BORO: What inspired the name Snowdonia? Matthew: e family of one of the owners, Tom Davies, are from Wales (Tom was born in London), and there’s a beautiful national park there called Snowdonia that’s home to the highest mountain in Wales— Mount Snowdon. e mountain and ski decor in the bar re ects this heritage.
BORO: Why are there names on the bar stools? Matthew: e names on the stools are names of Kickstarter backers who chose that as their perk.
BORO: Who is the chef?Matthew: Our Chef is Will Lubold.
BORO: When/how/where did you nd him? Matthew: Will used to be a chef at ‘inoteca, a great restaurant on the Lower East Side. We met him through some mutual friends and were lucky enough to steal him away.
BORO: I know you do an industry brunch on Mondays. What does that involve? Matthew: We wanted to do a brunch for all the actors and service industry workers who work weekends and never get to have brunch, but it’s open to all. It’s Mondays from 12p-4p, and the drink special is 2 bellinis, mimosas or bloody marys for $6 with a food purchase.
BORO: What are your hours? Matthew: 7 days a week, 4pm-4am. Dinner is 6p-12a, late night menu is 12a-2a, brunch is Sat, Sun, and Mon from 12-4pm.
BORO: If you could only have one item on your menu, what would it be? Matthew: Ooh, that’s a tough one. Will, our chef, does such truly amazing work that it’s hard to pick. But if we must, the Fish and Chips would win!

1. PERSPECTIVE
I am a firm believer that attitude and approach can change your life dramatically. The way in which you envision yourself and your surroundings has a direct link to your behavior. Tell yourself that you can’t, and you will be defeated before you begin. Identify yourself as an athlete and you will train like one.
2. KEEP a fITnESS jouRnal
If you are a list maker, logging your workouts can hold great appeal. It will reinforce a trigger to remind you of your workout, help set and keep your schedule, and allow for some reflection on your progress. A tangible account of your growth and achievement is a great motivational tool.
MOtivatiOnaL StrategieS fOr SUcceSS
Winter has finally set in. Cold weather, holiday parties, and
sugary treats may be tempting you to pack in and hibernate. This is the time when many people fall off the fitness wagon, and make resolutions to take care of themselves at a later date.
There is no need to fall backward to take steps forward. Employ some small motivational strategies to keep you going through the holiday season and feel ready to start the New Year. B

“With my clients, the biggest hurdle to get past is the thoughts in their own brain. I always say, ‘Tell your mind to get out of your body’s way!’ Your body wants to move around and be physical but it is your brain allowing excuses to get in the way. Remove the excuse and you remove the hurdle.”
w- Lisa Ezkanazi
Personal Trainer and Owner (Astoria’s Simply Fit & Simply Cycle)
3. Find a buddy
Allow peer pressure to work in your favor. Introduce yourself to people around you at the gym. Or drag a friend to your workouts. Studies have shown that you are more likely to follow through with the support of a training partner to keep you accountable and on track. It is also helpful to find someone with similar goals and comparable fitness level, so that you can consistently push each other.
4. Hire a trainer or attend small group training
Not only will they put you on the right track and help you see results quicker, they know how to cater the motivation to the individual. They are the experts, and want to give you their best so you can be your best.
5. Join an online atHletic group or club
While I do employ many motivational strategies, this one is new to me this year. I was invited to join an athlete’s group by close friend, and it has been a great joy and source of inspiration for my workouts. The daily ‘do something’ posts are a reminder to me of how important and essential my workouts are to my life. I am encouraged to experiment and borrow from member’s workouts. Of course, getting to know people with common interests is always a plus.
6. set goals
Aspire to run a 5K. Learn a new skill. Compete in a sports league. Endurance race. Maybe you are seeking an extra confidence
boost for an important event, looking for an outlet to relieve stress, or have your eye on a new outfit. Commit yourself to a realistic goal, lay out a plan of action, remind yourself of it regularly, and celebrate the progress along the way. The satisfaction of achieving a goal will encourage you to set another.
7. Have Fun and cHange it up!
Identify an activity that matches your interests and personality. If you are enjoying your workout, you are more likely to stick with it. Hike, kayak, Crossfit, or boot camps. Perhaps you like the social feel of dance, camaraderie of team sports, freedom of running, focus of strength training, or the calming benefits of yoga. Don’t be afraid to play with variety. It is great for the body and mind to change and challenge with a new activity from time to time. I certainly have some staples in my weekly workout schedule, but I am always looking to learn something new to shake up my routine. Whatever it may be, Western Queens is an extremely active place, and there are options for everyone.
“Imagine yourself as a college student checking out the variety of curriculum. Avoid the pitfalls of injuries due to over-training in the same way by diversifying your workouts. Find one or two classes that suit your personality best, but also try things outside your comfort zone. This will stretch your fitness skill set and make you a better athlete.”
- Luz Milagros Arpino Personal Trainer and Director of Group
Fitness (Matrix Fitness Club)
“Getting to know each client, their likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, goals, and accomplishments is the basis for any successful client-trainer relationship. The trust built carries forward into their program, and can be a driving force for motivation.”
- Francesca SantangeloPersonal Trainer and Fitness Instructor
(Matrix Fitness Club, The Rock, Simply Cycle)

I started dancing because my mother is a dancer. I was the baby in the studio, so I was there before I even could dance. I would take classes and then hang out the rest of the time. It was a second home.
My mom is a dancer and a wild woman. My father likes photography, and for a living he buys and sells property at this point. He loves photography, fly fishing, and music. My family home has a room filled with bookshelves of CDs, so I was raised with a variety of music.
I went to college for dance. My original goal was to find a school that would let me study abroad and dance. I didn’t think that was a real thing you could do, until I got to Elon University in North Carolina. When I got there, they put me in the BFA program,
and I thought, Wow, I’m capable? It’s a real life job?
I danced all through college, and it’s continued since I’ve been in New York.
I moved to New York about 3 years ago. I came to NYC because it was an easy option for me. After college I did an internship at Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, which is in the Berkshires. I didn’t know what to do after that. I had a friend here and all the companies I seemed to network with were here. So it just seemed stupid not to come here.
So I moved to New York and I still dance. I show my own choreography and I dance for 2 or 3 different people at any given time. I’m working at Sweet Afton, and I’m starting to bartend there. I do a little bit of admin work
here and there, and a little bit of PA work for peoples films. I do a lot of little things.
My ideal situation would be that I would be choreographing and have my own little company. Nothing huge, my own little company that would feel like a family. I’d like to be part time New York and part time country bumpkin, with a little wooden studio and lots of sunshine.
Influences in terms of dancers are Bill T. Jones and David Dorfman, Hofesh Schecter and Bathsheva. Those are my four favorites. I probably draw from very specific music as well; whenever I choreograph I tend to listen to things like Queens of the Stone Age or Beirut. I’m kind of into the funky, circus, gypsy music right now. It’s not that I’d set a piece to that—those are inspiring mood setters per se.
DECEMBER 2013 | BOROMAG.COM | 33
I just choreographed a duet for Elon University. It’s entitled Tink and it’s 8 minutes long. Eliza Coolidge did the music for me, so it’s all original music. I’m going to start applying to show it in New York and I will probably expand on it. It’s a duet between two women, and it’s aggressive and a little dark. A lot of my work seems to have an aggressive feel to it. I think because I’m such a happy person, that’s where it comes out.
This is the first big thing I have done in while, which is good. It’s getting me on the ground. Everything else I have shown was something I have already done; I didn’t make anything new because I wanted to show New York I can do something before I started something new.
In terms of the dance world New York is an incredibly inspiring place because you are with
your idols. The people that are so amazing and untouchable are the people you are taking class with.
I love seeing live performances at BAM. I feel like BAM has a great way of picking out phenomenal shows. I like small shows, in tiny black box theaters. The smaller the space, the better. I think BAM is top notch for me.
I find that I’m kinda like a puppy—I need to be walked. I’m sure that anyone who knows me would say the same thing. If I haven’t been to a dance class I’m probably annoying everyone. I didn’t expel any energy today. There’s that in me where I have to do something physical and I just need to connect to the human body.In dancers there are no personal boundaries. You are sweating with people, you are moving with people, and you are touching them. To the
average person it may seem inappropriate—with dancers you don’t worry about that for 2 seconds. It’s just nice to go into something and create and be physical. It’s immediate connections that you build.
I love living in Astoria. I come from a small town originally, and I think Astoria is my big city / small town. It’s a very small community and it’s very important to me to be a part of a community. The small town feel can be annoying, but at the end of the day I couldn’t live without it.
I would tell any dancers moving to NYC to just not be scared. I think you get nervous at first, but there is just so much opportunity—and it’s so easy to take—and you just have to do it. Being the person that you really want to be is not that untouchable. It’s right in front of you.
Michelle Amara Micca is a choreographer and dancer living
in Astoria who recently sat down with Lizabeth Nieves for
the following interview.

On November 7th, 2013, Rést-aü-Ránt celebrated its sixth year of service in Long Island City. Music was provided by D.B. Reilly (www.dbrielly.com), and the guest list included Tracy Capune from Kaufman, Rob Mackay from the Queens Economic Development Corporation, Michael Anzalone from Singlecut Beersmiths, Joey Distefano of Chopsticks and Marrow, and Sasha and Natasha Pogrebinsky from Bear. Attendees noshed on smoked brisket with horseradish cream, bacon jam sticky buns with bourbon caramel and candy bacon bits, and shrimp dumpling sriracha cure-all soup shots. Menu specials ranged from a very popular raw organic lasinato kale salad, to RaR bar sliders made with organic beef patties, crispy pork belly, panko breaded and fried brie cubes, and fresh home made tagliatelle with lobster and jumbo lump crab. e hostess of the evening, owner Tina Stepanovic, was a classic standout in her beautiful little black dress. And she made sure that all guests took home chocolate tru es. In case you missed the evening, we’ve attached the tru e recipe for you to enjoy.

What took 11 years to put together at 5Pointz was erased within six hours.
Days after supporters rallied at the Long Island City graffiti mecca to save it, a paint crew washed away hundreds of pieces of aerosol art with white paint. Some remnants of the pieces can still be seen, but a majority of the façade is now covered.
Jerry Wolkoff, who owns the property on Jackson Avenue and Davis Street, ordered the overnight painting, according to 5Pointz attorney Jeannine Chanes and 5Pointz spokesperson Marie Cecile Flageul.
“I know it’s real but I can’t believe it. [Wolkoff] disrespected thousands of artists overnight,” Flageul said, holding back tears. “It’s crazy when you think about it because we’re supposed to be the vandals. He’s the vandal.”
According to Flageul, the paint crew arrived at the site with police protection around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19 and finished painting the building around 7 a.m. She received a call about the painting at 6 a.m. and shortly rushed to the site with 5Pointz curator Jonathan Cohen. Witnessing painters still covering the walls, the two tried to enter the building’s loading dock, she said, but were stopped and asked for identification.
“I’m disgusted,” said Cohen, who now plans on moving out of Long Island City. “Jerry, congratulations. Enjoy your moment and realize long after you’re gone, your son will live on with this legacy, and his son will live on with that legacy, and no one is going to talk to you about anything you built real estate-wise. But they’ll remember you for this.”
Both Flageul and Cohen said they saw no safety workers or caution tape and an online search found no Department of Buildings permit.
As news of the painting broke, fans and artists were left in shock after thousands filled out forms to request 5Pointz be landmarked at a peaceful gathering on Saturday, November 16.
Earlier, a Brooklyn judge ruled against a request for a preliminary injunction, seeking to protect the different aerosol pieces found around 5Pointz. The judge also lifted a temporary restraining order, allowing the owners of the property and developer G&M Realty to continue with any pre-demolition activities at the site.
Developers and owners hope to build two apartment towers, each exceeding 40 feet, with close to 1,000 rental apartments, 32,000 square feet of outdoor public space and 50,000 square feet of retail space.
Even with the art gone at 5Pointz, the fight
will continue, said Chanes. The initial lawsuit filed by the group will continue and now includes claims against the owners for destroying evidence while a case is pending, potentially costing the Wolkoffs $150,000 in damages per piece of art. The group will also consider appealing the denial of their preliminary injunction, based on a written opinion by the judge.
Cohen said all proceeds from the lawsuit would go towards building a community center.
Artists, community members and supporters gathered on the 5Pointz loading dock for a vigil, lighting candles, hanging artwork on canvases and signing pieces of paper taped to the walls.
Stefanie Nava of Long Island City lit a candle and placed it along the wall.
“It’s just really sad and incredibly depressing. Nobody can believe it,” she said.
During the vigil, Cohen told attendees they need hundreds of people to show up for the next court date.
“[Wolkoff] just did what 16-year-old kids do at night time,” Cohen said, “and he did it in front of police, in front of everyone, in front of people on the train and got away with it. I’ll fight in the court till the end.”
Wolkoff and his attorney did not respond to a request for comment.

It is a juicy hamburger stuffed with decadent, velvety foie gras—like a gigantic beef ravioli nestled on fluffy brioche. It sits on a bed of crumbled feta, and is topped with a ribbon of kefteri cheese and pickled onions. It is the filet mignon of burgers, and it is just the tip of the iceberg at Cavo—Astoria’s premiere restaurant, garden, lounge, and club.
For years, Cavo has been serving elevated Mediterranean cuisine in one of the most sophisticated dining rooms this side of the Hudson—and the current menu is certainly no exception.
Cavo showcases a lovely blend of favorite dishes from primarily Greece and Italy intermixed with accents from all over the world—under the direction and expertise of Omari Dacosta, most recently of Danny Meyer’s barbecue hot spot, Blue Smoke. Dacosta has also worked in the kitchens of Trestle on Tenth, Pera Mediterranean Brasserie, and Red Rooster in Harlem.
At Cavo, the Greek influences are certainly the most pronounced. Ravioli is stuffed with Greek cheese and arrives under a blanket of creamy feta with white truffle essence. Exceptionally tender octopus is charcoal grilled with lemon and extra virgin olive oil, presented simply, yet outstanding. Jumbo lump crabmeat is forked into hearty cakes, and stacked with fennel shavings and celery root puree.
Desserts are equally sublime, as well. A granita of strawberries sits on a Greek yogurt panna cotta, dressed with shavings of lime zest. Nutella crepes are stuffed with a walnut banana compote.
From start to finish, dining at Cavo will leave you wanting to return. For a cocktail at the bar, hors d’oeuvres at a banquette, or a nightcap in the sunken garden. Perfect for an intimate weekday dinner or a weekend evening of dancing, there’s a little bit of something for everyone.

In anticipation of the LIC Holiday Flea Market, we sat
down with Daniela Delgiorno from Bill’s Balls to talk about what she and her husband, Bill Morris, will be serving
this winter.
BORO: What did you enjoy most about the summer/fall ea market?
Daniela: Getting to know the LIC community. We met such wonderful people and were able to get to know many of our customers. We love our repeat customers and know many of them by name.
BORO: Which meatball was the biggest success?
Daniela: Bill’s Original is always our top seller but e Flushing, our pork dumpling meatball, is always a big hit as well.
BORO: You are introducing a brand new avor for the holiday ea... can you tell us about it?
Daniela: e Jingle Ball! Created just for the holiday market, it is a Turducken Meatball served with sweet potato mash, turkey gravy and a Cointreau-cranberry relish. We are excited to be
using duck from Hudson Valley Duck Farm in these meatballs. e avor is just amazing. We wanted to come up with a meatball that would incorporate all of the wonderful avors of the season. We think we did, and we’re very excited to be making them for the ea. ey will be in very limited supply, and only served the rst two weekends.
BORO: What other avors can people expect?
Daniela: It seems people get upset if we show up without e Upstate! So we will de nitely be serving our bu alo chicken balls at the market as well. Also on the menu will be our mulled wine. Non-alcoholic of course.
BORO: What excites you most about the holiday ea?
Daniela: Having the opportunity to share our food is always exciting, but being part of this market allows us to work alongside some truly great vendors. We love being a part of it!
Gourmet ice cream can be a real challenge. How do you create interesting avors that push the envelope, yet hold enough
mass appeal to sell entire batches at a pop-up market? ese are some of the questions Ken Lo and Paul Lim
faced when they decided to startup Ice & Vice, a pop-up ice cream shop which will be
joining the LIC Flea this winter.
mass appeal to sell entire batches at a pop-up market? ese are some of the questions Ken Lo and Paul Lim
BORO: What days will you be at the LIC Christmas Flea?I&V: We will be there every Sunday for the duration of the holiday ea. BORO: What are your winter avors?I&V: We’re very excited about our winter menu! As is our usual style, we’ll be going outside the box, and really breaking tradition. We’re exited to play on things like apple and shiso, tea and lemon charcoal, and guava, just to drop some hints. We’re also excited to be working with other LIC holiday ea vendors on collaborative o erings. BORO: What excites you most about the holiday Flea?I&V: We’re really excited to see some of our old friends that we vended with during the summer, and see what they’re o ering this season. More importantly, we’re really excited to be back with the LIC and Queens community and celebrating the holidays together. Community support
has been tremendous for us since the very start, and we’re excited that it’s continuing in to the holiday season. We’re ecstatic that we can be part of the “shopping local” philosophy, and looking forward to our fans and the community enjoying our ice cream while they’re shopping the ea. BORO: Which avor would Santa most enjoy, and why?I&V: He’d probably enjoy ‘Afterschool Special’, which is a malted vanilla with a fruity pebble crunch. is avor was designed with children in mind and we really drew from our fondest childhood food memories – milkshakes and fruity pebbles for breakfast. e avor is quite whimsical, just like Santa. A jolly man like him de nitely has an inner child—I mean he gives out gifts for a living, and would really appreciate our children’s menu! How can a man who enjoys children so much not enjoy a avor for kids?

is summer, an empty lot in Long Island City transformed each and every weekend into the premiere Food and Flea Market in all of New York City. Visitors enjoyed everything from artisan jewelry and gourmet teas, to barbecue that had been smoked overnight, and a mobile doghouse of specialty canine treats and toys.
is December, the LIC Flea comes out of hibernation, returning to the same spot every Saturday and Sunday. Many of your favorite vendors are returning, along with some fresh new faces we are excited to share.
Dandy Wellington and His Band will be performing at the LIC Flea Holiday Market every Sunday in December. Inspired by the Big Band Era of Jazz, Dandy Wellington has taken the sounds of the 1930’s and 40’s and created a world of well-dressed music.
For those more inclined to roll than rock, JIB Lanes will provide a real bowling alley for recreation. e New York Cosmos will have professional players signing autographs and o ering soccer activities.
After all of that, when you need a refreshment, this time around we will be raising spirits—quite literally—at a bar that will be serving beer, wine, and holiday cocktails.
Be sure to break out the ugly Christmas sweaters and get ready to smile, because there will be complimentary photographs with Santa Clause from 11AM to 2PM daily.
is all takes place while you are purchasing holiday gifts and goodies from over fty vendors each and every weekend.
As a sneak preview, we touched based with two of the holiday vendors to see what they are getting prepared for this weekend.
