  • 1. Call Numbers

2. Call numbers are the letters and numbers that tell you where an item in the library is located. It is usually on the spine of the item (book, DVD, etc.) 3. Books are separated by fiction (made- up) and nonfiction (true). Then, they are further separated by childrens books and adult books. Lets take a look at some examples 4. Fiction Books 5. An adult fiction call number is made up of two parts: F (Fiction) or M (Mystery) and the authors last name. ------------------------------------------------------------------ So, for example, a book by Danielle Steel would be found under: F STEEL in the adult fiction section and a book by Mary Higgins Clark would be found under: M CLARK in the adult mystery section. 6. A childrens fiction book follows the same formula but with E (Easy) and J (Junior). ------------------------------------------------------------------ So, for example, a book by Marc Brown would be found under: E BROWN in the easy section and a book by Barbara Park would be found under: J PARK in the junior fiction section. 7. All adult and childrens fiction books are shelved alphabetically by the authors last name. 8. Nonfiction Books & 9. Nonfiction topics have a Dewey Decimal number according to their subject matter. 10. Nonfiction call numbers are also made of two parts: a Dewey Decimal number and the authors last name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- So, for example, a book about big cats by Alan Turner would be found under: 599.74 TURNER in the adult nonfiction section. If the book were Junior nonfiction, it would look like this: J 599.74 TURNER 11. Nonfiction call numbers are arranged on the shelf by number first then alphabetical order by authors last name. 12. One type of nonfiction is labeled different from the rest: biographies (a true story about a persons life). -------------------------------------------------------------------- The call number has a B for biography and the last name of the person the book is about. So, for example, a book on Abraham Lincoln would be found under this call number in the adult biography area: B LINCOLN The same formula applies for Junior biographies: JB LINCOLN 13. Biographies are arranged on the shelf alphabetically by the last name of the person the book is about. 14. Lets see if you tell what kind of book goes with each call number and where it is located in the library. 15. F BROWN 16. Adult Fiction section 17. J 636.9 SMITH 18. Junior Nonfiction section 19.
