Reviews – by Delbert Black

Hokie Joint – The Way It Goes … Sometimes £13.50 – This is a debut album of contradiction – it’s a traditional, contemporary blues album. Hokie Joint use the blues traditions and meld them with their style of playing. The title track opening the CD proves the point with a slow grind, dirty slide guitar, modern harp sound, vocals of distinction and a well constructed song. ‘Mr Jones’ is a more bouncy song and ‘Franklin’ continues in upbeat mode, with the harp and distorted slide guitar playing the riff. Acoustic guitar is brought in on ‘Back Where Are Going’ and once again

some nice harp from Giles King which doesn’t dominate the track. Giles is a superb talent on the harp and adds that extra dimension with some well thought out playing. After the ballad ‘The Crying Song’, it’s back up for ‘Ghost which gives a good demonstration of their rocking roots and blues sound. All together ten self penned songs by the band and one cover of Charley Patton’s ‘Tom Rushen Blues’. No wailing guitar solos as it’s all about the groove and the band play their parts superbly. At times the CD is very reminiscent of the Ian Siegal Band but that’s not a bad thing. If you like traditional blues and would like to hear it knocked into shape for the 21st century, buy this CD now.

Matt Schofield – Heads Tails & Aces £11.99 – Over the last few years Matt Schofield has been acclaimed by fans and guitarists a like as well as the media and not just the blues magazines. Quotes like “One of the top ten British Blues guitarists of all time” - Guitar and Bass magazine. The LA Daily News describes Schofield as "Head and shoulders above the herd". So Mr Schofield step into the spotlight with your 3rd studio album and impress us. Was there any doubt? You can’t fail to be impressed by a guitarist that has such beautiful command over the fretboard and a fluid feel in his solos. But music is not all about technique and skill - there’s the

songs and no album is complete without good songs. On Head Tails & Aces you feel Matt has matured with his song writing, singing and playing. The track “Betting Man” is a good example of a well constructed song and although the style and songs are not always ever so original they are played to perfection by a band of musicians as good as any. In fact Matt Schofield has at last added a bass player and what a choice in Jeff Walker. Never over playing but a class act, allowing Johnny Henderson a bit more freedom, interchanging between Hammond organ and piano. New French drummer Alain Baudry plays effortlessly and can he make a shuffle skip along – listen to opening track “What I Wanna Hear”. There’s the slow blues with the jazz tinges as on “War We Wage” and “Lay It Down” and the funking it up on “ Can’t Put You Down” and “Woman Across The River”. This is a class album and those who like the rougher side of blues/rock may find it a little sweet and perfect but most will just see Heads Tails & Aces on a higher plane than most – be prepared to be impressed.

Big Gilson - Sentenced to Living £13.99 – You don’t have to be from the US to have the blues. Here’s a guitarist from Brazil that lives and breathes the blues. He grew up listening to bands like the Rolling Stones and guitarists like BB King, Johnny Winter and Rory Gallagher. He mixes all these influences in his playing and he’s one hell of a guitarist. Some of his previous albums have been a little more traditional with nods to guitarists like Roy Buchanan but this one is definitely blues rock. What an opening track - a slow blues! You might say an unusual choice but this version of Rory Gallaher’s “I Wonder Who” has so much power, it hits you

right between the eyes. Gilson is a mean electric slide player as demonstrated on the title track “Sentenced To Living”, played on his signature model Gilsonator guitar. You’d be forgiven if you thought the very catchy “Ready” was a Rolling Stones cover, complete with backing vocals and horns. The original songs are inventive within the blues/rock field and the choice of covers fit the feel of the album. Excellent versions of covers like “Tobacco Road” and “Take Me To the River” with punchy horns and a powerful version of The Beatles “Yer Blues”. The album slows down for the self penned ballad “ It’s Hard To Say Goodbye” and takes on a different feel on “Silver Train which is a slide guitar and harp work out, picking up speed more like the Japanese Bullet train. You feel the Big man’s enthusiasm in the performance and the album is uplifting with some scorching slide guitar. Big Gilson plays all over the world including the UK. Make sure you catch him and his band, Blues Dynamite next time they are on tour but for the meantime enjoy the album (and yes that is him as a baby in Rio smoking a cigarette).
