Members of the Columbia Remodelers council, Sales & Marketing Council, Green Building Council and the HBA in general came together with the City of Columbia’s ONE Columbia CityServe effort to help beautify the city. Members worked with Hank Chardos of Home
Works of America, Inc. and city officials to identify and work on various homes throughout Columbia in April of this year.
Work ranged from raking leaves to replacing shingles and everything in between. After it was all over, members helped on 6 different homes and made a great improvement to all of them.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and effort with this project including Scott Heron, R.B. Gallup, Marlene Sheard, Zeke Riddle, Robert LaFitte, Larry Newton, John Covert & family, Pete Williams, Chuck Grimsley, Ron Rust, Tony Harmon, Harvey & Vallini, LLC, Clark’s Services, Century Glass and all of the other volunteers who helped on the many projects with the city wide effort.

May was National Home Remodeling Month and while the Columbia Remodelers council did a great job
promoting remodeling and providing resources to consumers, we thought we’d take a look at a home currently undergoing a remodel geared to reduce the energy bill and increase the life of the home – a
“green” remodel for lack of a better term.
We met at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Derek Jakes in Columbia on Thursday, May 23. The homeowner and the staff of Comfort Services gave us a timeline of events that led to the remodeling in the first place and then a history of the project over the past seven years. The home features a geothermal system for
heat and air, radiant barriers, foam insulation and many other cost-cutting equipment and techniques.
The field trip was very informative and gave a great look at what can be done to reduce energy bills through remodeling. On a side note, we’d like to remind all of our members that we can certify remodeling projects in the Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home Program. For information on how to do this, please contact us at the HBA Office.

The Green Building Council met on Thursday, April 18 for a lunch meeting at Seawell’s. The topic of this meeting was Geothermal Systems. Council members from Comfort Services gave us information on how these systems convert energy from the earth into heating and air conditioning for the home,
different system configurations, cost to install and operate, savings versus traditional HVAC equipment and more. It was a great program and a lot of very good information was shared with the group.

The annual HBA Bass Classic was held on Friday, April 26. Over 80 HBA Members and their guests met at the Lighthouse Marina on Lake Murray before daybreak and prepared to blast-off for a day of fishing. Temperatures were a little chilly this year, but the sun was out all day long.
On the line, besides fish, were cash prizes for the first three teams with the most weight of up to 5 bass, the single largest bass and the largest non-bass brought in.
Thanks to all of our sponsors and the many volunteers who help make this a great day on the lake!

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) holds its annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D. C. each June. Members from across the nation gather in the Capital city to meet with their elected officials and talk about the issues facing residential construction.
The leadership of the HBA of Greater Columbia find this to be a great opportunity for our members to affect change in policy and to take part in the very important governmental affairs work that this association works so hard for. For this reason, they have put together a trip for members to be able to participate in and attend this event for the lowest possible cost. We had 30 members from our association and others in South Carolina take a bus ride to Washington, D.C. and meet with elected officials.
Special thanks to our sponsors and to everyone who went on the trip.

The membership of the HBA met for a General Membership Meeting on Thursday, May 9 at Seawell’s. This meeting was a little different than normal as we met in the afternoon for a lunch meeting instead
of for dinner. Members embraced the change and showed up to make a great gathering.
Before the meeting started, we had a special Builder / Banker Workshop featuring Bernard Helm, President of the Market Opportunity Research Enterprises® - M.O.R.E. – a 26-year-old firm specializing in services for the residential construction industry. Mr. Helm gave a presentation about the availability of developable lots in the greater Columbia area, home prices, inventory, and home price trends.
The meeting began promptly at 11:30 a.m. with a buffet lunch. After everyone was seated, we started with the introduction of new members and guests at the meeting.
We heard from member Scot Smith whose home suffered a large fire the weekend before the meeting. Scot gave a moving talk and members generously donated money and gifts to help him and his son in the aftermath of this tragedy.
Our speaker for the meeting was Robert Dozier of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta. Mr. Dozier told us what the Federal Home Loan Bank is and how it works to help lending institutions provide money to residential construction projects. He also gave us his insights into the banking and home building industry from his point of view.
Jimmy Derrick of the Membership Committee gave a report about our Beat the Heat Membership Drive running throughout May and June. Members who sponsor 4 or more new members by June 25 will win two nights at the Grove Park Inn this July. Everyone enjoys double SPIKE Points in May and June, as well. And speaking of SPIKEs, we recognized some members for their recent achievements in the SPIKE Club.
After some reports from HBA committees, councils and groups we held a drawing for the meeting jackpot. The winner was Andrew Cole of Collins & Lacy, P.C. Andrew generously donated his winnings to Scot Smith.
