The 45th annual Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show was held march 11 – 13, 2011 at the SC State Fairgrounds. This event is presented by the HBa of Greater Columbia and featured nearly 300 home building, remodeling, landscaping and other related exhibits. The show enjoyed over 10,000 attendees this year and exhibitors reported a very high quality crowd offering many leads for the various companies present.
Special thanks to Wallace Steadman who chaired the show this year, and to the HBA members who worked on the Home Show Committee. Also, thanks to those who sponsored the show this year:
Chairman Steadman and a group of volunteers from the Home Show Committee toured the show on the first day of operation and awarded exhibits with Chairman Awards for best display in each building and one for Best in Show. Here are the results:

The membership of the Columbia Remodelers met for a Quarterly Meeting on Monday, February 21 at Seawell’s. Special thanks to our meeting sponsor: Andersen windows.
At this first meeting of the year, Chairman Scott Heron installed the 2011/2012 Executive Committee for the council. We also thanked Johnny Del Priore for his work as Chairman in 2010 and presented him with a plaque recognizing his work.
The speaker for the meeting was Moisture Management in Bathroom Construction presented
by Darryl Petty of Schluter Systems. Darryl showed us how the Schluter System encapsulates wet areas of a bathroom and reduces penetrations and moisture damage problems that can arise with traditional construction methods.
Our next Quarterly Meeting is May 31 at Seawell’s at 6:00 p.m. Our topic will be the 2006 IECC Code. The meeting is open to all Columbia Remodelers Members. Non-members may attend for $25/each. Please contact Bin Wilcenski if you have any questions.

The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia held
a Meet ‘n’ Greet for green-minded businesses, leaders
and elected officials on Thursday, March 3 at the HBA
Office. We were very pleased with the attendance
and the opportunity to have this group come together to
further the goal that we all share in making the Midlands
a greener, more sustainable place.
Leading up to the Parade of Homes, members of the
Green Building Council worked with Sovereign Homes
and their Parade of Homes entry. Council Chairman
Joseph Gilmore visited the home and tested it for energy
performance. He also worked with the builders to learn
more about the home before it was completed.
Joseph will compile his findings on the home and have
handouts available during the Parade of Homes (May 7 – 22)
that will explain the many green features of this home.
We’ll also have a special tour of this home during Green
Day at the Parade on Tuesday, May 17. We hope to see
you there!

In a unanimous vote, the HBASC Board of Directors decided to rename the Builder of the Year Award to the Thomas Bagnal Builder of the Year Award in honor of the HBASC’s first president Tom Bagnal, who passed away last month. Not only was Bagnal the first HBASC president, but he was the first to serve two consecutive terms.
During the Bird Supper, HBASC President Mike Lowman addressed the Bagnal family and friends, who were in attendance. “Each of you know first hand how much of an influence he was in your life. Our industry and Association were built on Tom’s leadership and we would like to say thank you.”
The Thomas Bagnal Builder of the Year Award will be presented to a deserving builder member during the Celebration of Excellence on Thursday, July 14 at the Myrtle Beach Marriot Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes. Tickets are on sale now. When you and your spouse/guest register for the convention, each of you receive a complimentary ticket.
