Sections The classic Pullman accommodation, the “section” of asleeping car was an open area with seats for daytime travel whichwere converted by a porter to an upper and lower berth. Later theywere modified to have curtains for privacy. This was the mostcommon way to travel on an overnight train during the heavyweightera.

Drawing Rooms The elite paid more for “drawing room” accommoda-tions, which featured an enclosed room with a small couch oppositea seating section. At night the seats were converted to upper andlower berths and the couch became a bed. These rooms were equippedwith a private lavatory.

Compartments The “compartment” was smaller than a “drawingroom” and didn’t have the sofa/bed.

Single Bedrooms These were small rooms with a single bed. Laterversions had a sofa which converted at night.

Double Bedrooms By adding a berth over the convertible sofa, thebedrooms evolved into double occupancy

The 8 section - 1 drawing room - 2 compartment sleeper was one of Pullman's most popular designs. In 1937there were 243 cars built to plans 3979a alone. Nearly half of these cars were used in Pullman pool servicenation wide, the rest were assigned to, and painted for, various railroads nationwide. These models featurecorrect air-conditioning parts and full lettering inclding car names.

The 10 section - 1 drawing room - 2 compartment design was one of Pullman's 3 most popular sleeping car configurations with over 260cars built to plan 3585 and its derivatives. After the 1948 break up of Pullman many of them were sold to various railroads nationwide, wherethey continued into service into the 1960's. These models feature correct air-conditioning parts and accurate paint, lettering and names.

The 6 compartment - 3 drawing room cars of plan 3523 and 3523a were an unusual all-room design that foundfavor on many long distance trains, particularly between New York and Florida. The 6-3’s had an unusualwindow arrangement with 12 small, single windows along one side and numerous tightly packed pairedwindows on the other. Many of these cars were named after famous composers and authors. Again, these carshave never been available as a plastic HO model.

Following WWII the Railway Express Agency (REA) handled much of its express and parcels traffic in a varietyof wooden express reefers and baggage cars added to the front of passenger trains. In 1947 REA ordered fivehundred all new steel express cars from ACF. These cars utilizing welded construction and featured a new highspeed truck design. The cars were ice cooled, but the ice bunkers were of a collapsible design that folded outof the way when not needed. This allowed these cars to carry both loads that needed refrigeration as well asstandard parcels. These cars travelled from coast to coast on all major railroads.

When delivered REA’s cars were painted in a fancy silver and green scheme meant to blend with thestreamlined passenger cars then in vogue. After a short time in service the cars showed a tremendous amountof dirt and were quickly repainted into a variety of green paint schemes. The first of these was applied in 1949and carried only Dulux gold lettering. In 1952 the red and white “Railway Express Agency” diamond was added.This scheme was modified in the 1960’s with a more modern design logo and white lettering. These cars lastedin service until the coming of Amtrak.

Fifty similar carswere built for theAtlantic Coast Linerailroad at the sametime as REA’s cars.These were deliv-ered in a two-tonepurple and silverscheme that lastedinto the 1960’s. Af-ter 1960 the ACLpainted its carsgreen with silverlettering.

This is the first time these important cars have been available in an HO plastic kit.

HO Turned Metal WheelsetsOur wheelsets are perfect upgrades for most popular brands of HO Trucks. Our wheels feature non-magnetic plated and blackened brass construction andfeature RP-25 flanges. Wheelsets are insulated on one side.

Available in 33" and 36" diameter, each in standard Code 110 or *Semi-Scale code 88 widths. All wheels available in 12 packs or in bulk packaging of100 or 300 axles for fleet upgrades!

*Semi-Scale code 88 wheels will operate on most brands of commercial HO track, giving a truer-to-scale appearance without the need for special trackwork.
