William Bryant a Shining Light
Students and staff at William Bryant Elementary had an assembly filled with surprises this spring. The school not only had a visit from Kansas City Royals’ mascot Sluggerrr tackling bullying, but also had representatives from H&R Block delivering a huge check. To top it all off, the school unveiled being named a Lighthouse School in the Leader in Me Program. The Leader in Me Lighthouse School title is awarded to honor the attainment of a well-rounded leadership model. Lighthouse Schools serve as models of leadership and mentors to other schools.
Representatives from H&R Block awarded WBE with a check for $10,000 for having the most new customer sign-ups this year in the state of Missouri at tax time. Congratulations to the newest Lighthouse school and all the leaders at WBE.

homas Ultican Elementary students and staff lined the halls adorned in eye patches and carrying signs of encouragement and support for National Ocular Melanoma “Eye Patch Day.” The day reached close to home for the Wildkittens – each of them have a friend with ocular melanoma and they were waiting to surprise him with cheers, hugs, signs and love. Thomas Ultican Assistant Principal Eric Neff was recently diagnosed with ocular melanoma and he made a special visit to the school. Students and staff surprised him by lining the halls resplendent in eye patches and cheering him along every step of the way in his recovery. The school held an assembly addressing ocular melanoma and student Ryan Gillespie delivered words of encouragement for Mr. Neff on behalf of the student body.
“I was told that they were doing the talent show that morning,” Neff said. “So I was headed there to watch the kids. I felt truly humbled by all the love and support they have shown me. I was a little embarrassed that they made that big of a deal over me, but truly grateful. I work with a great staff and an awesome group of kids. I was speechless. I miss those kids and seeing how much the kids missed me was truly humbling. When I saw that all the kids and staff were wearing eye patches for me I couldn’t fight my emotions. The support has been tremendous.”
Neff was diagnosed thanks to a result of a SPOT screener – the same tool used for vision screening of BSSD students provided by the Blue Springs Education Foundation. It helped identify the melanoma early and allowed for quick diagnosis. While Neff has been away

from TUE, his students and coworkers showed him he is thought of every single day, they are behind him every step of the way and his return is anxiously awaited.
Neff also can’t wait to get to back to work. Seeing all those signs and getting all those hugs have him inspired to get back as soon as he can.
“It’s hard to stay away,” he said. “When you work at a place like TUE and with such a great staff and a building full of great kids you want to get back as quick as you can. The staff would have done that for anyone, not just me – that is just the kind of people they are.”
About the District The Blue Springs School District, located on
the eastern edge of the Kansas City metro area in Jackson County, covers a total of 58 square miles and includes students from the communities of Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Independence, Lake Tapawingo and Lee’s Summit. Enrollment in the district for the 2016-17 school year was more than 14,812 students. Our mostly middle to upper-middle class community enjoys a stable economy. Within our school district boundaries, we have more than 80,000 residents. Our close proximity to Kansas City allows residents easy access to a variety of social, cultural and educational opportunities. There is also convenient access to over 54 colleges, universities and technical schools in the metro area.
The Blue Springs School District employs a highly qualified, diverse staff of over 2,029 employees. There are 1,021 certified staff (more than 86% hold a master’s degree or above) and 1,008 support staff. Veteran staff members bring years of valuable experience to the classroom and new teachers bring fresh ideas and new practices to enrich the total learning environment. A number of staff members hold leadership positions locally, regionally, and statewide and are sought out for advice on curriculum and instruction. New staff recruitment is an ongoing process in this rapidly growing, progressive community. Our teachers are represented by professional organizations. Relationships with these groups have been quite good and continue to be strong because we all work together for the success of our students.
The Blue Springs School District has a rich tradition of academic excellence. Today this tradition continues with major advancements in our curriculum and also our efforts through technology to place materials in student hands wherever they might be. The curriculum is aligned to both state and national standards and is reviewed annually. Technology allows the district to offer the greatest opportunities for student learning through a multi-dimensional approach. The district has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for 16 consecutive years. Grant funding has also transformed our efforts to positively impact all students and their successes within our schools as they prepare for their futures. Low student-to-teacher ratios allow teachers to focus learning on student needs and readiness, and instructional coaches assist teachers in coordinating learning from K-12. Student achievement is the focus of all activities in the Blue Springs School District, and we strive to assure all our students are prepared to take their places as productive, informed, and caring members of society. If you have any questions regarding this information please contact the Bartow Administrative Center at (816) 874-3200.

The Blue Springs School District honored its 2017-18 building Teachers of the Year and named the District Teacher of the Year at the annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast. Tara Pennington, library media specialist at Moreland Ridge Middle School, was named the 2017-18 District Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Pennington has been with the BSSD for three years, two at MRMS. She was honored at the annual breakfast and then returned to MRMS, where students were lined up outside, through the halls and all the way into the Dr. Nancy Stonner Media Center. Pennington is now eligible for the 2017-18 Missouri Teacher of the Year competition.
Pennington said she enjoys a library teeming with energy, excitement and learning. She also loves being connected to the entire MRMS student body and staff.
“I just love being able to work with everyone, with every teacher and every student in the building,” she said.
“Teachers are the rock stars in the classroom, and I’m able to collaborate with them. My principals also believe the library’s the hub of the school. I’m getting to work with a lot of personalities, and I’m helping them be as successful as they can be. Libraries are flexible learning spaces and extensions of the classroom. It’s a really fun time to be a librarian.

Voy Spears, Jr. Elementary has been named a Gold Star School by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Voy Spears is one of eight schools in Missouri to receive the honor. The Gold Star Schools program was established by the Department in 1991 and aligns with the national Blue Ribbon Schools program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The Gold Star Schools program uses the same criteria for nomination as the National Blue Ribbon Schools program. Recipients of the State’s
award were nominated for national Blue Ribbon recognition. Blue Ribbon Schools will be announced this fall by the U.S. Department of Education.
“Our success is based on great teamwork between parents, teachers and students,” VSE Principal Renee Murry said. “Our parents are really dedicated to education and our staff makes learning fun and they build close relationships with families and students. Our students like coming to school.”

District Honors Retirees
Each year at this time I get a little emotional. It is time to say goodbye to my seniors, whom I have had for four years. They have become a part of me, they have helped me become the teacher that I am. We have worked together, struggled together, and experienced success together. And I know that life will go on without me seeing them every day, but life as I know it will change.
At the same time I am saddened to see my seniors leave, I am excited to think about what their future holds. Are they going to fulfill their dream of becoming a large animal veterinarian? Are they going to move to college and find a new passion? Are they going to decide that Blue Springs is and will always be home, and move back as soon as they can? Their options are endless!
I can’t help but think about my favorite Dr. Seuss book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! While I could probably recite the entire book, I believe my favorite parts go as follows:
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourselfany direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And You are the guy who’ll decide where to go……Out there things can happenand frequently do
to people as brainyand footsy as you.
And then things start to happen, don’t worry. Don’t stew.Just go right along. You’ll start happening too.
OH!THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!...
This section of the story is one I believe all parents, teachers and friends alike can agree — our graduates are “brainy” and “footsy.” We have prepared them to succeed, we have prepared them in the classroom and in life. They are ready to see things happen. They are ready to choose their direction.
As sad as it may seem to some, graduation really isn’t about saying “goodbye” to our seniors, it’s about knowing they are ready to see the world and explore the places they will go. As the story ends…
You’re off to Great Places!Today is your day!Your mountain is waiting. So… get on your way!

The East Room of the White House was packed with guests and the press waiting for the Teacher of the Year Ceremony to begin and enjoying entertainment provided by the pop group Fun. While waiting in the State Dining Room, I could hear the band and wanted to get closer. So I left our waiting area, entered the East Room and was nearly chased out by a White House staff member who knew I was supposed to be waiting with the group of teachers — we would meet President Obama in a matter of minutes. I convinced him to let me stay for a moment, promising I would get back to my assigned spot right away.
As I enjoyed the music, I learned I was standing beside the drummer’s dad. During our conversation I asked him about how his son became a drummer and if he ever thought his son would perform at the
White House. He shared his pride in his son and his happiness that his son was doing what he loves — performing and sharing music at the White House and at concerts around the world. This proud dad then found me after the ceremony to introduce me to his son and other members of the band. As I spoke with the drummer, he shared with me that he never dreamed he would experience such success as a performer and how much he appreciated his dad for being his biggest supporter.
I’ve experienced the kind of unexpected future that exceeded my dreams. Being selected as the 2016 Missouri Teacher of the Year has provided me with opportunities to fulfill potential I didn’t know I had. I always dreamed of being a teacher and knew the classroom was where I belonged, however I never dreamed I would have the
opportunity to represent teachers from my school, district, and state. I never dreamed I would visit the White House and be honored as a teacher.
William Purkey, an educator and researcher, tells us, “Human potential, though not always apparent, is there waiting to be discovered and invited forth.” A quick search on the internet provides a simple definition of potential: the possibilities human beings are capable of accomplishing. I love the word possibilities when I think of my students and all they will accomplish. If we believe every day is filled with possibilities, just think about every life being filled with possibilities. During the last two years, I have experienced many amazing events. I met President Obama and Vice President and Mrs. Biden. I have added my voice to the conversation about education at the

local, state, and national level. I’ve presented at a national conference. I’ve met teachers, parents, and students from all over Missouri and the United States – and I’ve witnessed it over and over again — no matter where I go, teachers and parents want the best for their students. No matter the location or issues we face, our children are at the heart of our lives and the decisions we make.
When asked to reflect on a unit of study and the writing project recently completed a student wrote, “I didn’t know I could do that.” The student’s potential as a writer was there waiting to be discovered and invited forth. I can observe my students and see some of their talents — a gifted dancer, a skilled softball player, a coordinated juggler, a bilingual reader and writer, a singer, an artist — but I can’t tell what they’ll become. What I am certain of is the need to demonstrate my belief in their potential, the way so many have done for me. I am fortunate to have experienced many things over the course of my year of service as Teacher of the Year that I could not have predicted. I didn’t know I could go to Space Camp and successfully complete simulated space missions, survive a helicopter crash in water after atmosphere re-entry, and live in a dorm again after 35 years. I didn’t know I would travel across Missouri and the United States, give speeches, present to the Missouri Board of Education about teacher leadership, and invite young people to join the teaching profession. What might each one of us be able to accomplish when someone believes in us and gives us an opportunity?
During a study of plants in our classroom, my students and I learned about the features of plants and how each feature helps them
survive. We had discussions about the classification of seeds as living or nonliving and my students were required to provide evidence to support their thinking. My students felt strongly about seeds being living things, saying, “It’s all in there just waiting to come out” and “I think seeds are like us because we were tiny little babies who grew into strong people.” My students understand seeds are capable of creating a new plant but do not visibly display the characteristics of living things and they know seeds use stored energy to stay alive and wait for the right conditions to begin to grow. My students were intrigued with the idea of something as small as an acorn becoming a mighty oak even when it is difficult to determine it’s potential just by looking at it. Human potential is much the same. When parents and teachers love and nurture our students we can’t possibly know what paths our students will take or what wonderful things they’ll accomplish, but we know the potential is there.
I now have in my closet a flight suit and a ball gown. Those who knew me as child may have expected and hoped for me to succeed, but could not have predicted a flight suit and a ball gown. They could not have known what I might accomplish, but believed in my potential. I love having a flight suit and the experiences of Space Camp. I love accomplishing challenges I didn’t know I could do. I’ll soon travel to China where I will visit schools and learn about the education system. I will meet teachers, students, and parents and experience a culture very different than my own. Visiting a country in which the language and customs are so different will be an unforgettable experience filled with the unknown. As I meet my educational colleagues in Asia I am
certain we will speak the language of our students’ unlimited potential and learn from each other the best ways to help discover and invite forth that potential.
You would have had to describe me as a child as serious and quiet. I was not comfortable being the center of attention and worked fairly hard not to be noticed. I’m certain nobody would have seen a future for me that included being front and center. But here I am representing the 70,000 teachers of Missouri and serving as a speaker at educational and civic events. My dream has always been to have the privilege and responsibility to call forth the unlimited potential of our children; to be a teacher. I am thankful for all those who believe in me and my potential — my parents, teachers, husband, siblings, and colleagues — and I will always work to discover and invite forth the potential of others.
When we look at our children we see their talents and preferences, we do not see their futures. We can hope and pray they grow to be happy, healthy, and productive adults. We can believe in each child’s unlimited potential, unseen and unknown, and provide them with the tools, experiences, and opportunities necessary for success. We can communicate our belief in our children with high expectations and an unwavering commitment to supporting every child. My heart is filled with the certainty of the unlimited potential in every child and the belief that it is our duty to invite forth this potential. I challenge each one of us to believe in the unlimited potential of children and keep in our hearts and minds the flight suits and ball gowns our children will undoubtedly possess one day.
Human potential, though not always apparent, is there waiting to be discovered and invited forth. ~ William Purkey

Until Next Year..... Thank you to our students, parents, staff and community for an amazing 2016-17 school year. The year was filled with highlights both in and beyond the classroom as our students and community continue to make the Blue Springs School District successful each and every day.
The Blue Springs Wildcats boys track and field team let nothing get in its way of its ultimate goal at the Missouri State track and Field Championships – not even a five-hour rain delay. The Wildcats used a team effort to capture their third state title in four years and fifth in school history with 70 points. Senior Dylan Cowling was the Cats’ lone state champion, winning the javelin, but Stephen Mugeche took second in the 3,200 run, Tre’ Wheaton second in the long jump and the 1,600 relay team placed second in the final event of the weekend to bring home the crown.
Blue Springs South’s Tori Findley had a stellar meet, easily taking the 3,200 run title and finishing second in the 1,600. The Jaguar girls placed ninth overall and Blue Springs finished 14th.
