Volume 2 Issue 12 December 2013
Published monthly and distributed FREE of charge to residents of Levack, Onaping, Dowling and Windy Lake.
Merry Christmas!
Christmas is a time of giving (and receiving). Christmas is also a time of stress, forgetfulness, irritability, short tempers, no
patience, hurry-up-go-quick, sadness, over-eating, lots of naps,
Some of the things we forget are joy, celebration with family and friends, thankfulness (it isn‘t only for Thanksgiving time),
sharing, comforting others, random acts of kindness to strangers.
We sometimes take for granted many people and groups and organizations. We expect them to be there for us and are
quick to become angry or frustrated when they are not.
This year, did you enjoy the Easter Egg Hunt and activities? Did you enjoy the
Hallowe‘en Event at the I.J. Coady Arena with the crafts, snacks, free skating? Last
year, did you enjoy the Hallowe‘en Event in downtown Levack (and other years as
well)? Allow me to be one (among many) to publicly thank Chantelle Gorham and Dave
Curtis for the continual support of our community and especially our children.
Have you enjoyed the free movies at the Rio Encore Theatre? The theatre is run and
furnished voluntarily so that everyone can enjoy it!
Let me publicly thank ALL of the merchants and services in Levack and Onaping who
have stayed the course in this stuttering economy and shown their support for our
community by keeping their doors open when others would have closed up shop and
moved on.
Many thanks to Mark (and his Staff) at the arena for keeping OUR arena clean and in
perfect running order.
We can‘t forget St. John‘s United Church and St. Bartholomew‘s Catholic Church for all
the good things they do for everyone—regardless of denomination. The warmth and fellowship provided is heart-felt.
The Knights of Columbus are very active members of our community and deserve our warmest thanks as well.
Vale (our biggest corporate resident) quietly supports our community in sponsorship of the Breakfast Program at Levack
Public School.
The Onaping Falls and Cartier Food Bank is there giving all year long but this time of year it provides a much-needed and
welcome offering of nutrition for those of us in our community who are less fortunate.
Have I forgotten anyone? I‘m sure I have. I‘m also sure that you will add to this list!
By the way, thank YOU for being a loyal ORACLE reader. Without you, this newsletter wouldn’t exist!

History Book
The Story of Onaping Falls
Robert P. Trott
Chapter 19 1953-54 was the opening of A. Earl Hodge store in a two bedroom cement slab house, less the inside partitions. Joe Dumont, now a well-known local artist, was the first manager; he was assisted by Mrs. Mary McKee and Jan Grenier. Later, the post office was located beside the store. This grocery store was particularly handy because up to this time Levack was the nearest place for shopping. One other thing that was very convenient was the service that ―Uncle Earl‖, an affectionate title well deserved at this time, had an arrangement with the company that allowed a chit to be signed and the cost of a purchase would be deducted from the employee‘s next cheque. This was always useful towards the end of a pay period when funds were short. Stan Philisko and his wife Mary, Mrs. Crow, Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Shaver completed the compliment of this store during some of these early years. Although in 1953 water lines had been laid in the Cartier subdivision, sewer lines had not been completed. Three duplex houses, no basements, had been built and were occupied. So for one year these duplex houses were equipped with a facility quite familiar in the North, outside privys. The next couple of years were ones of building, organizing and future planning. By now the mine was in production and housing for the employees was of paramount importance. There were many reasons for a worker to apply for a company house; reasonable rent, new home, close to work, nice surroundings and one other that was often the final straw to making the decision to moving out here – the chance to keep their car in respectable condition for a few years anyway. Anyone remembering the terrible state of the old road from Sudbury to Hardy with its constant washboard surface and deep pot-holes knows that the life of a brand new car in those days was about one year, even less if there were four or five passengers. By the end of 1955, the town became an established fact. In a few short years, major and minor problems had been met head on and solved. Reluctance by official bodies to recognize the fact that this was not a boom and bust operation like so many other mining towns in the past, made it very difficult to obtain necessary government approval assistance the attitude of the local school board to refuse even at this time and date, a public school, is a good example. In time, by wearing away this negative suspicion, it was possible to forge ahead, expanding where the need existed and never looking back. Many plans and decisions were made and just as many changed or reversed; flexibility had to be the name of the game in a project of this type, particularly in the light of the fact that there was no base to build on and no other project to draw comparison from. It was new from the first load of gravel that was dumped to build the roads.
