Youth Week is an international celebration of youth held annually

during the first week of May. It is a week of fun, interaction and

celebration intending to build a strong connection between young

people and their communities and to profile the issues,

accomplishments and diversity of youth across the province.

Wherever Youth Week is celebrated, the idea behind it is the same:

Young people are important and need to be recognized in a

constructive and positive manner. Their contributions need to be

acknowledged and celebrated.

• With the full support of Fraser Valley Building Supplies, there will be work shops at their plant to enable our racers, with full technical support, to build their own cars.

• With the support of our Sponsors and The Blueberry Local Magazine we are developing sporting rivalries between various entities to form racing divisions with trophies and Keeper trophies for entrants and build new race cars.

150 people sat and ate a fabulous lunch at The Cedarbrooke Chateau on February 17th.

Easy listening to the smooth voice of Rob Hess and accompanied by Roslyn. Many a favourite was sung from Country to Gospel and plenty of swooning was done by both female and male diners!

I sat with 3 fantastic women…Sheila, Vera and Joan.

The Seniors of Mission have had a busy and exciting few months. The activities at the Mission Seniors centre have been well attended with a great turnout at the Valentine Dance. It is great to see many new faces at the activities and we encourage anyone fi fty years of age and older to come and visit us at the centre at 10th Ave and Taulbut in Mission and see who we are and what we do. We are in the process of planning for the month leading to the summer and even beyond.

We were privileged to take part in a Community Amenities presentation by the District of Mission in which the District outlined the amenities that are on line for the coming years. A Seniors Centre is part of the plan and for this we are happy and look forward to working with the District to achieve this vital facility and to improve services for the Seniors of the District.

In April we will have the MATURE DRIVERS PROGRAM, on April 5th from 10 am to 12 noon. This is a great program for those who are coming up to the magical age of 80 and who are faced with the prospect of retaking the drivers exam which we took many years ago. It is a free program provided by the Mission Community Policing Access Centre and ICBC. There are no tests, just lots of information and reassurance. Please contact the Mission Seniors Centre offi ce at 604-814-2188 to register.

On April 20th we will be having our fi rst trip of the season. We will be travelling to the Charles Dickens Museum and Tea room in Chilliwack. Cost is $10.00 and you must preregister at 604-814-2188 as space is limited on the bus. Please bring enough money for your lunch Pickup is at the Mission Seniors Centre.

On Tuesday May 3rd, The Arthritis Society, BC and Yukon will be presenting a workshop entitled Chronic Pain Management from 1 pm to 3 pm., at the Seniors Centre, 10th Ave and Taulbut. Cost is FREE. Please call the offi ce to preregister 604-814-2188

The OAPO Spring Tea will be held on May 14th from 1 pm to 3 pm with refreshments, raffl es and draws. This is always a worthwhile even....good food good friends and good times for all

On Wednesday May 25th we will be travelling to Hayward Lake. The time for the trip is from 10 am to 3 pm. Pickup is at the Mission Seniors Centre, 10th Ave and Taulbut Bring a small item for lunch to share. Cost is $10.00 for the bus. Please preregister at 604-814-2188 as space is limited. May 26th is the 65th Anniversary Celebration of the OAPO, come and see what we have planned. The Mission City Farmers Market Society will hold its fi rst outdoor market of the season on Saturday, May 7 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Lane Creek Park beside the Mission Community Library.

Subsequent markets will be held every Saturday from May 14 until September 24. Some of the themes that will be celebrated this year include Strawberry Luscious, Canada Day, Children’s Day, Blueberry Saturday, BC Day, Dog Days of Summer and Artists in the Market.

The mandate of the Mission City Farmers Market Society is to organize and operate a community-based farmers market in Mission City for vendors, backyard gardeners, non-profi t organizations and the general public. The purpose of the farmers market is to enhance the health and economic well being of residents by providing a reliable, local outlet for high-quality products and a venue for direct personal contact between vendors and their customers.

Vendors at the farmers market are required to make, bake or grow their products. They take pride in encouraging healthier eating by providing local, traceable, nutritious food. They also protect the environment by minimizing the

amount of energy used for packaging and transportation.

Additional information on the farmers market is available by calling Scott at (604) 302-5561 or by visiting www.missioncityfarmersmarket.com.

Outdoor Markets Start In May...

After the snow thaws and the cold rain eases the street sides and green spaces in Mission show a ‘weathered’ appearance with litter scattered all about. Soon after you will see the streets lined with people wearing bright coloured yellow vests collecting the litter from the blossoming spring landscape.

These are volunteers from several Mission non-profi t groups that participate in the Mission Adopt-A-Block Society’s annual spring litter clean-up for the remuneration of $250 to go towards their group’s program and activities. The spring clean-up, alike the annual fall clean-up, are a great fundraiser opportunities available only to Mission non-profi ts.

These events are successful for modeling civic pride, demonstrating environmental responsibility, protecting our children and animals from otherwise harmful litter encounters and adding to the aesthetic appearance of the community.

Mission residents and businesses are invited to join in these rewards also by participating in other Adopt-A-Block litter control programs including: an adopt a ‘block’ program for individuals and families that want to maintain the cleanliness of their neighbourhood and a Voluntary Code of Practices program for Mission businesses interested in

being leaders in litter prevention and reduction. Adopt-A-Block also runs a free public education program available to Mission’s schools and community groups that includes annual activities such as the School Litter Audit, community garbage barrel painting events and annual contests such as our recent 2011 Youth Webcast Contest.

Mission Adopt-A-Block is proud to have been administering a litter control program in the community since 1994 and is thankful for all the remarkable volunteers who have and continue to dedicate their time, energy, and heart to keeping Mission clean and beautiful.

The society welcomes you to come join in the experience. Learn more at www.missionadoptablock.com or call (604) 826-9423

MaggieWanted: Computer desk with mouse pad or lap to sit on. People friendly, 2 yr old, female tabby, spayed with vaccines up-to-date. Was found 18 months ago with a fractured pelvis, but am now completely healed. Not too keen on small children, dogs or being squished. Love to play, especially with a plastic straw on a slippery fl oor.

KaluhaBeautiful 2½ yr old, tortoiseshell, female in dire need of some TLC and a forever home. I’ve been in temporary accommodation for over a year now but even though I have lots of friends, it’s not the same as having one’s own couch to curl up on. My dream is to have my own, permanent place with a comfy bed and a family to care for me.

Toni4yr old, red headed female looking for an understanding and patient owner. Not use to trusting people, I have a bit of an attitude and need a caring person who will allow me to be myself while making sure I learn polite behaviours. If you have oodles of love to give and a quiet, soft place for me to get away from it all, please come and take me home.

If you are looking to adopt one of these cats please contact us on: Tel: 604-820-2977• 33103 North Railway Ave. Mission

A group of Ukrainian exchange students and their host Canadian students, volunteering at the Cancer Society offered to put on a Ukrainian evening to raise funds for the charity – they only had 2 weeks to organise the whole event which was a very tall order but their determination won through. The evening was a wonderful event with Ukrainian singing, dancing, a slide show (which made me want to visit) and fantastic food. The students raised $1,395 for the Society and everyone went home happy after a wonderful evening.

The Mission Coffeehouse Concert Series hosted a teen acoustic music night on Jan. 15, as a Dry Grad Fundraiser for Heritage Park Secondary School. It was held at the Leisure Centre Play Station at 33100 – 10th Ave off Taulbut St.

Over 100 people were in attendance to hear everything from ballads, to instrumentals to alternative music. Seven groups entertained a very enthusiastic crowd throughout the evening with Bob Corbin as MC. Groups were challenged to be creative when it came to percussion as no drum kits were allowed, so they improvised with Cajons and Djembes. Parents sold pizza, pop, chips and cruise draw tickets to round out the fundraising activities.

The Mission Coffeehouse Concert Series is run by the members of “Kitchen Sync”, a local band that entertains at the coffeehouse. It is held on a monthly basis to promote local talent. The open stage goes from 7:00 to 8:00. This allows musicians of all ages to come and play. The main act starts at 8:00. Admission is $5.00. Coffee, tea and goodies are also available. This is an excellent opportunity to spend a relaxing evening with friends, sipping coffee and listening to exceptional live music.

If you would like to play on the open stage or would like further information regarding upcoming acts please check out www.steppingstonemusic.ca or call Liisa at 604-556-4402.
