M A Y w e take this opportunity o f congratulating Swaraj Sporting Club on the occasion of their 50th anniversary. A half century is a long time for a sports organisation especially when one remembers that this period straddles the period o f apartheid. A period when economic, social and racial discrimination made the survival o f organisations such as these very difficult.
Swaraj Sporting Club have, however, risen to the challenge and today they are stronger than ever. They present to us a model of a partnership between committed sports administrators and the community at large, especially the parents. W e note with pleasure how they have grown from strength to strength as they successfully implement this model.
Swaraj Sporting Club has its roots in the pre-Group Areas Act era. The club was
= Bluebells United FCestablished in Jeppe and they played their soccer on the once famous Natalspruit Sports Grounds. Today they are the proud owners of their own grounds at the Progress Sports Complex. W e are aware that they have major development programmes planned and we wish them well as they embark on this important project. Once again they are setting an example for others to follow.
Swaraj Sporting Club have survived because there has been a willingness by members to continue their proud tradition. The cycle of player to official has been maintained thus ensuring continuity. W e applaud the efforts of all those who have contributed to the proud tradition that is Swaraj Sporting Club.
Cheers! to another 50 years.A lan M oonsam y
I EXTEND my heartiest congratulations to Swaraj Sporting Club on the occasion o f its 50th anniversary.
50 years is a long time in the history of any organisation or club and having reached this milestone Swaraj Sporting Club can be truly proud o f creating the kind of environment for our youngsters which is conducive not only to their good health and physical development but also in instilling sound social and moral values which will make them better citizens o f our nascent democracy.
I’m sure that the past players of Swaraj Sporting recall their glorious days and this commemorative brochure will rekindle the thrill o f participation as they reminisce about ‘the good old days’ .
Sport can be regarded as one of the great ‘levellers’ . Irrespective o f your status in
Nirvana Secondary Schoollife you meet your competition on the sportsfield as an equal. Sport, therefore, transcends all prejudices. It helps to cultivate a spirit of comradeship, trust, respect and honour.
Our youngsters have the opportunity today to make the national team, and this achievement can only be attained by dedication and commitment.
I conclude with the words of the great Indian sportsman Ranjit Singh:
“O Powers, make us to observe and keep the rules of the game. Help us neither to offer nor to welcome cheap praise. Give us always to be good comrades. Help us to win if we may, but and this, O Powers especially if we may not win iViake us good losers” .

Bellevue FCS A LU TA T IO N S and congratulations to the Swaraj Sporting FC on the occasion o f the celebration o f providing football for fifty years to its members.
Take a bow, the officials and players of such a strong club.
It is indeed a privilege and honour for Bellevue to have been in\nted to say a few words on this occasion o f your golden jubilee celebrations.
50 years! What a significant achievement. It is a tribute to the pioneers who laid the foundation and all the officials and players who have contributed to the success of your club.
Our footballers, young as well as experienced have the ability to match the best. Why, then do w e produce few really outstanding players?
One o f the reasons could be the lack of organised coaching, another, the lack of adequate training facilities.
The answer, however, probably goes
much deeper - a lack of dedication, application and commitment.
Your club, like Bellevue, has tons of juniors under its wing. These juniors all come with built-in stamina and strength and a small percentage o f skills, but the rest must be developed by those people that have dedicated themselves to the game.
Time must be made available for these juniors to be coached and prepared for football in general and a well disciplined lifestyle in particular.
In those days o f football, great personalities were produced by the game, so why not utilise the new resources to produce a much better person.
The associations and football clinics only offer a small percentage o f activity, the rest must come from your senior manpower to nurture the juniors.
W e toast to your future and pray to see your club grow from strength to strength.
Congratulations and best wishes to all players, officials and supporters o f Swaraj Sporting FC on attaining your 50th year of existence. It is indeed a milestone in any organisation’s history, especially when one considers that some professional clubs cannot boast such an achievement.
Your club has been at the forefront of football for many a year. More recently, your contribution towards the upliftment and development o f junior football is indeed appreciated. Swaraj Sporting FC has become a perfect role model in terms of its good administration, hosting o f coaching clinics and the high standard of acceptable
Fordsburg United FCconduct on the field.
It is remarkable to note that your concern for football extends beyond your own club to improving the local association in its entirety.
It is our fervent wish that the proud traditions and the rich heritage o f Swaraj Sporting built ardently throughout the years remain the hallmark o f all its future endeavours. May every candle lit on your 50th anniversary assist in overcoming the darkness that enshrouds the state of football presently.
