Dancers fill the floor at Clark’s Ole Time Music Center in Raphine. Story on page 9.

31solarboxesIf you have sun, you have energy.

9sawmillmusicTonight, we have live music from Mountain Hollow.

26 horseherosWe’ve got some magic happening in Buckingham.

Even with the Frosty the Snowman DVD on heavy rotation, it wasn’t enough to will the snow gods to dump enough inches our way for Adam to build a Frosty. But there was enough left over on the deck to eat. Not entirely impressed with that selection, Peyton reached for the ripest banana she could find.

What amazes us about these kids is how little they seem to care about wearing a jacket when it’s cold. The den has to be super nippy before Adam asks to put a shirt on. By then, the boy is usually shivering.

Peyton is just as warmblooded. Maybe it’s because she sees her broth-er do it, but like clockwork, Peyton will leave the dinner table and begin tugging at her shirt sleeve. “Off!”

Like teens sprinting towards a swimming hole in August, Peyton and Adam race to the train table and start dancing on it.

There’s a birthday card someone got the kids last year that plays a song when it’s opened. Sounding like a cross between a Mexican mariachi band and Polka music, this is the most awesomely horrific music you will ever hear. And the kids love it.

As soon as the song starts, Adam rips into a high tempo shuffle, dis-playing the kind of footwork and pel-

fromthepublishers

vic motions you might see on Sabado Gigante. I like this kid.

Seeing her brother do this sends Peyton into giggle land as she tries to keep up by bouncing up and down.

Once the music stops, the kids glance at each other, open the card back up and squeal in delight. The wild things repeat this over and over again into the evening. 2863 times by our last count.

Meanwhile, big puffy flakes of snow are falling from the skies, lightly blanketing the trees. The kids are convinced this will be a blizzard, not realizing the ground is too warm for anything to stick. No worries. The Mexican Polka is playing. Thumpity thump thump, thumpity thump thump, look at Adam go!

Enjoy!Yvette & Tommy Stafford

FEBRUARY 2013 Blue Ridge LIFE 7

Les Vins d’AmourFood, wine and love. Does there

exist a more beautiful means of expressing joie de vivre, tenderness and love? Food and wine and love are inextricably linked, as anyone will attest who can remember sit-ting at a mother’s side gazing raptly while breathing in the redolence of baking bread or watching cook-ies curling warm and fresh from the sheet. Perhaps those kitchens of yesterday—where the pleasure of pleasing was paramount and mothers in aprons stood cooking up family meals—are now accessible only by memory, yet they continue to hold the gold standard for what touches our hearts. If food be love’s heart (‘stomach’ just doesn’t have quite the same poetical zing) then wine is its pulse, its blood, that which connects and unites. When I sit with those I love, connecting over food and wine, I taste a sort of quiet eternity, if only in briefly touching the soft comfort that is love.

This February 14th, if not cooking for your beloved or being cooked for, let us speak to your heart, in the way

humans have been speaking to each other since the beginning of civiliza-tion, in the language of food and wine.

Wines for love: (If Grenache is the sexy one-night stand, Syrah offers the longevity and heart of marriage.)

Saint Cosme, Côte Rôtie, 2009 – Valentine’s just might be the time to splurge on Côte Rôtie, one of the first wines to which Robert Parker gave a perfect 100 score and one of the most exciting red wine appellations in the world. A bucket list wine. Here on the steep hillsides along the river Rhône is probably the site where the vine was first cultivated in Gaul. The name, ‘Côte Rôtie’, means roasted slope and today the best vineyards face southeast, angled to maximize the sunlight, the vines literally sun baked, while sheltered from cold winds. Made from the Syrah grape with up to 20 % Viognier permitted to add perfume and soften the dense Syrah, Côte Rôties are famous for their exotic fragrance, and the best can age for years. This 2009 shows classic Syrah aromas of boysenberry and violet complimented by notes of tapenade, smoked meat and licorice.

Silky tannins and a very long finish. $62

Hervé Souhaut, Saint Joseph, 2009 – On the west bank of the northern Rhône sits the appellation of St. Joseph, much less well known than revered Hermitage or Côte Rôtie. St. Joseph, when red, is 100 % Syrah yet much lighter than Côte Rôtie. In fact some locals view St. Joseph as their answer to Beaujolais. Because the east-facing vineyards lose the sun up to two hours earlier than other northern Rhône sites, they mature faster and therefore can be consumed much younger. An elegant wine with nuances of crushed black raspberries, cinnamon, clove and sandalwood. $36

Saint Cosme, Côtes du Rhône, 2011 – And for those who prefer not to spend their pay checks and trust funds on wine alone, here’s a chance to indulge without taking out a loan. Mostly Grenache, but some Syrah for structure; look for notes of roasted coffee, blackberry and garrigue. A rich and beautiful bottle of wine for $16.

It’s a place where men in red suspenders and big buckles can show off their silver-haired beauties and enjoy a night of live music and dancing.

Anne Blackwell of Stuarts Draft and Winfred Armstrong of Staunton dance at Clark’s Ole Time Music Center in Raphine. They are dancing to live music from Mountain Hollow, a band made up of Duane Ishan, Leon Ervin, Jay Stillwell, Ernie Price and Russ Monger (above). The dance happens Friday nights at 1288 Ridge Road in Raphine. For more info, call 540-377-2490.

“You can bring a two-year-old in here or you can bring your 90-year-old mother or father in here,” said John Gilliam of Natural Bridge, who has been coming to the weekly dances since they started 19 years ago. Friday night is when John lets loose after putting in long hours at a carpet factory, a job he’s held for 35 years.

Lloyd Ogden grew up in Mount Pleasant, in Amherst County. He lives in Covesville now and has hit this joint nearly every Friday night for the last eight years.

“We had a friend that told us if you like to dance, go to Clark’s Old-Time Music Center, and we’ve been coming ever since. We’ve met so many wonderful people over here. And the music’s good.”

It’s the music that got this party rolling. James Clark’s father, Bruce, started it.

“My dad grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He played music. That was their source of entertainment. They didn’t have electricity. He learned to play the fiddle and the banjo and the guitar,” James said.

Bruce’s friends began jamming together in a small log cabin, which is what used to be the log home company’s office. “Then one week, a couple got up and started dancing. That’s how it started.”

The jam sessions quickly outgrew their space, which is when the Clarks decided to turn the old sawmill building into a dance hall.

If you’re a wall flower, you’re in the company of framed pictures of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. But it won’t be long before an older man walks over to you, and insists on having this dance. And he tells you about how he lost his wife a few years back and how a good woman is hard to find. And when you politely turn him down for another swing on the floor, he nods his head and smiles as he walks away.

Moving in time to music and holding someone in your arms is why people come. To some, it’s been a lifesaver.

“I had one lady that lost her husband, shut up for four years, and she said she took a shower, dressed, and was gonna step out in front of a car ... take her life. She came over here, she said that first night the feeling left her,” said event founder Bruce Clark. He’s not dancing or fiddling tonight. But he brought his smile and a firm handshake to greet people as they walk in.

With live music from Mountain Hollow, the Clark’s Lumber Company Old-Time Music Event celebrated its 19th year hosting a weekly dance party in Raphine. Founder Bruce Clark, age 91, greets guests as they arrive (below). Meanwhile, his son, James, struts his stuff on the dance floor (above)

A gleaming blanket of snow is beautiful, but how can I temper its harsh glare?

Welcoming the Winter Wonderland

Clear View Window Films

Authorized Window Film DealerPrestige Dealer Network

The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful winter views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them cov-ered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright?

I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furni-ture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen signifi-cant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year.

3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your brilliant winter views.

For those of you without blinds, I can take care of ev-erything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of freshly fallen snow, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat.

For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

Though the weekly event has its share of spontane-ous party crashers – sometimes a group of students from Washington & Lee will get the wild hair to drive up north from Lexington on a Friday night – its regulars say the group is mighty tight.

“When somebody gets sick, we all sign cards,” said John, the gentlemen who works at the carpet factory. “We’ve had fund raisers for people, raised 8 to 10-thou-sand dollars for people that needed it. It’s just a good place to be on a Friday night.” BRL

LAURA PARKER Photography Exhibit Opening

& Artist’s Reception Saturday, Feb 9 4:00pm—5:30pm In the RVCC Conference Room

Since February is the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day and the love this holiday evokes, I thought I would share a very spe-cial letter that was sent to me back in December from Mr. Fred Swope of Tacoma, Washington. The letter really touched my heart and I wrote back to Fred asking if I could reprint it in the February issue of Blue Ridge Life magazine and was delighted when he replied, “If you want to use my mountain story, I have no objections. After all, it belongs to the mountain people more than it belongs to me.”

,.Lynn:I recently received as a gift, your three books. What a pure

pleasure in reading the many mountain stories that you so ex-pertly wrote.

Let me give a brief introduction. I was born and raised in Fairfield. Early on I fell in love with the Blue Ridge Mountains and have roamed far and near in them. I have spent silent mo-ments at Haines Chapel; climbed Mount Pleasant; hunted grouse at Crabtree Meadows; explored Shoe Creek; picked huckle-berries on Flint Mountain; found a morel on the North Fork of the Tye River; built a patio with soapstone from Schuyler;

purchased cider at Seaman’s Orchard store; eaten snacks from Montebello to Nellysford and a few places in between. How-ever, I never made it to Love, Virginia!

Now I will relate my most unforgettable moment in these mountains. One beautiful summer day I stopped at the Grant Cemetery down on Irish Creek. Not a leaf was moving, the wind was at peace. As I walked the grounds I knew no names. Some headstones were substantial; others not so much and some lack-ing entirely. But the human hand had left its signature in a few faded bouquets of flowers scattered about. I found a spot where the ground looked disturbed but had no marker. Lying nearby was a weathered piece of paper I took for debris. I picked it up and on the underside, read in pencil, “I love you daddy.” At that moment I realized whether rich man or poor, from the moun-tains or from the valley, a common thread of emotion connects us all. It’s called humanity!

I shall always cherish the memory of that visit; standing alone at the top of a mountain reading four powerful words written by a child in grief.

,. Love … the universal language that has no limits in the hearts

of children and adults. Don’t put off telling that special some-one what they mean to you, while they can still hear those sweet words of love and savor them for a lifetime. Happy Valentine’s Day! BRL

Headed in the right direction?A 2012 year end real estate market summary for Nelson County

Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Thanks to a strong 3rd and 4th quarter, 2012 year end sales for Nelson County and Wintergreen were just 1.6% below residen-tial sales in 2011. The average price was down from $280,015 to $258,651; however, the median in-creased from 225,000 to $227,900. Overall, if 2013 starts like 2012 ended, our market may be looking up. Here are some market stats and facts for 2012.

When did most residential sales occur? 181 residential proper-ties sold in 2012 with the most sales occurring in December with 25 followed by October with 21 sales. (The slowest month was March with 8 sales.) The best sales quarters were as follows: Q4 – 64 sales, Q3 – 46 sales, Q1 – 36 sales, and Q2 – 35 sales. The second half of the year saw a 55% increase in home sales.

What areas have seen the most

residential sales? Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 109 sales, Stoney Creek (valley) with 12 sales, and all other non-resort or county properties with 60 sales. The least expensive piece of land sold in Wintergreen with .43 acres sell-ing at $10,000.

“I have one student who has cerebral palsy and he has to walk so many steps in his physical therapy daily. And, if he doesn’t reach his goal by the end of the week, he’s not allowed to come to his riding lesson. He’s been riding for over three years, he’s yet to miss a riding lesson.”

That boy, LaRue Dowd said, came to her three years ago when he was 7 and he could only crawl. Today, he walks with two fingers, one un-der each arm, and LaRue attributes his progress to riding a horse which mimics how it feels for hips to move.

“When they’re on a horse, that’s the closest stimulation they’re going to get to being able to walk. Some of the movement they get from the

horse actually encourages them to start the process of learning to walk.”

Walk and talk. Two things, LaRue has seen emerge from horse therapy.

“We have one student who started out saying maybe one or two words a day in school. But when she gets out on the farm, she’s talking to the horse, she’s talking to the instructor. She’s even talking to her side walkers about the horse ... She doesn’t even realize she’s doing it.”

LaRue grew up with horses. She showed them and was in 4H. She event went to college in Kentucky so that she could be near horses. “I got my degrees in veterinary technology and then went back to do equine therapy, my master’s degree. I’ve kind of always been on this track.”

Based at Sprouse’s Corner Ranch, LaRue’s equine therapy programs are affili-ated with Heartland Horse Heroes, a non-

profit whose stated mission is to “support equestrian activities for individuals who have mental, physical, emotional, social chal-lenges or learning disabling conditions.” Two years ago, LaRue’s program got a contract from the Buckingham County Public School system.

“They started sending students to us as part of their therapy, part of their school day.”

The program provides lessons to 10 students each semester and each student has three people assigned to him: one leader and two side walkers. LaRue says the program relies on volunteers, who are trained and tested every year. Though it’s quite the pro-duction, LaRue says the work is rewarding.

“When they first get on the horse some of them are nervous. Some of them are intimidated by large animals but when they overcome that, the emotion that they get is just wonderful for them.” BRL

Experience the Sunrise Side of the Blue Ridge. From our mountains to the mighty James River.Wear yourself out at our wineries, breweries and eateries, then hit the sack in a cozy cabin or bed & breakfast.

Some four to five years ago, Jim Purvis started toying with the idea of building a portable solar box that would power tools on a remote job site or keep your fridge running if you lost power.

“Most people said it couldn’t be done but they had never tried it,” Jim told me from the picnic table outside his Nellysford home.

“I didn’t want any wires hanging off of it. I wanted something compact and all you have to do is lift the lid and turn it on.”

Jim’s gadget is essentially a heavy duty weather proof tool box with a solar panel on the lid that is con-nected to a battery that sits inside. He wishes he had built one in time for last summer’s derecho storm.

“We were out for six days and I have another solar panel on the shed over here and that’s where I ran my refrigerator the first time, on that. And then I built this afterwards.”

An alternative to gas-powered gen-erators – gas pumps run off of elec-tricity, unless stations are equipped with back-up generators – Jim’s box won’t keep your entire house hum-ming. But inside Jim’s cozy kitchen, where a few pots sit on top of a wood-fired cook stove, a small solar back-up is all he needs.

“Basically, when you lose power, you have an option here. You can at least have lights, and you can save your refrigerator.

Reaching into the bed of his pickup, Jim unspools a roll of ex-tension cord and plugs it into the side of the solar box. The other end goes into a utility light. And then, he plugs it into his fridge. Instant power.

“I would plug in the refrigera-tor and then I’d have some lights and that’s all I try to do because if it happens at night, by morning, you start generating electricity again.”

The panels, Jim says, recharge

themselves in about four hours, even in spotty sunlight. A beefed up-version he built for a builder friend of his was able to run his tools, including a cut-off saw, all day long. “I couldn’t believe it,” Jim said, shaking his head.

The smaller units run about $800, whereas the larger ones are about $1200. Jim scoffs at the idea of getting his product patented.

“A patent is like $7000 and I feel like nobody’s getting any benefit from it if I try and patent it. I’m not trying to be a selfish person. Anybody can build one, except it does take a lot.” BRL

Rain Water ControlPerhaps one of the most overlooked

areas of design is adequate and well-thought out water control. The first question that should come to your mind when you begin a landscape project is ‘where will the water go’. By address-ing this question first, you remove a huge issue that plagues gardens world-wide – sudden bursts of rain that flood areas, move gravel and mulch and makes a mess of gardens. Since water is opportunistic, or moves by gravity from a higher to a lower point, some of the more simple solutions go a long ways to maintaining a beautiful garden.

The BermGrass is the number one filter

and deterrent for major issues with rainwater. One solution to prevent rainwater from wrecking havoc on lower areas more prone to washouts is to build a low, gradual berm (or mound of topsoil) above the area and place sod on it. The area where the topsoil is placed must have a con-tinuous fall to it to allow the water to continually move from a higher place to a lower one. This berm, at least 3-6 feet in width and long enough to allow the water to be controlled completely around the desired area, will redi-rect rainwater to other areas of your landscape that are more stable and can resist those sudden gully wash-ers during the summer and spring. Upon completion, the berm should be almost unnoticeable and is easily maintained with a riding lawn mower.

The Area DrainIn low areas that are subject to

standing water, nothing beats the area drain box. Typically 1 foot square with a grated top cover to allow water to flow in, the drain box is placed at grass level and captures the water and takes it underground to a 4 inch solid piece of corrugated drain pipe. This pipe takes the water away from the low

area and ‘day-lights’ (or comes above ground) in an area that can allow the water to continue to move away from your landscape – preferably in grass or to a drainage area lined with stone.

Relief Pipes in WallsRelief pipes must be installed behind

every retaining wall. These pipes are ¾+ inch in diameter and are drilled through the wall at ground level on the downhill slope of the wall to allow any water that permeates in the soil to move from behind the wall. We also wrap #57 gravel in erosion fabric just above these relief pipes, acting as a crude filtration system for the water that exits through the relief pipes. Remember to place the gravel deep enough so that grass, if planted above the wall, has adequate topsoil to survive the summer months. We also place 4 inch corrugated pipe be-hind the wall to act as a ‘void space’ to allow water to move both into the relief pipes and around the wall underground – typically ‘day-lighting’ the pipe a number of feet from the structure.

Roof WaterDon’t forget water that lands on the

roof. This water, now moving down-ward and gaining speed in large volume, can destroy an area in little time. Al-ways, always, always capture this water in 4-6 inch corrugated pipes and move it away from the home. This one act will prevent more issues with basement and foundation leaks and molds than just about any other solution available.

Rock Lined DitchesWorst case scenario, you may need to

design a V-shaped ditch and line it with stone. This ditch must present as little resistance as possible so as to allow the water to move easily through it thereby cleaning itself each and every rain. The bottom-line is that if the ditch is ‘rocky’ and presents resistance to the water, debris will collect and eventually lead to soil, weeds and eventual failure.

( Formerly Nelson Physical Therapy )

The Whole PictureChange is in the air. Nelson Physi-

cal Therapy has a new name. In ten years, our company has evolved and grown, adding various services and staff to improve your health. Our new name is Nelson Wellness Center. I wanted a name that reflects our services and captures all aspects of health, not just rehabilitation. Sometimes, we tend to focus on one aspect. For example, at this time of year, many folks are interested in losing weight and become obsessed with the scale. In only doing this, the bigger picture might be missed. Here are some other areas to examine:

Are you getting enough sleep? Is your caffeine intake affecting your sleep? How are you managing stress?

What is your state of mind? What is your energy level? How is your blood pressure and heart rate?

How strong are you? Can you walk up and down a flight of stairs without tiring? Am I in pain?

Are you taking time for yourself? Are you getting recreational time for yourself?

Are the relationships in your life going well? What are your eating habits? How good is your balance?

There are many spokes in the wheel to wellness. It may seem daunting examining each question above but it doesn’t have to be. Remarkably, once you start an exercise program, other things begin to fall in place. You begin feeling better and you want to keep that feeling so you start eating better. You have less pain so you can do more. You manage stress bet-ter. Sleep improves. You have more energy. Your state of mind improves because you are eating and sleeping better. Your state of mind improves and so do your relationships because your better physical health also im-proves your state of mine. And it goes on and on. You might be thinking, “Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it all before.” Perhaps, if that is you, the question becomes: “Is what I’m doing now re-ally working for me?”

Dear Dr. Steve,My skin is dry and irritated a lot of

the time, but in these cold months it is unbearable! What can I do?

Dry skin can be a big nuisance, but it can be a lot more that that too. Our skin is meant to be well moisturized--keeping it supple and protecting it from cracking. When it dries, it often starts to itch and crack. We scratch, the skin gets in-flamed and irritated, and sometimes a vicious itch/scratch cycle or infec-tion can set in. It is best to head this off early in the process if possible. In the winter, running a humidifier (especially if you have dry heat), limiting bathing, and using a good moisturizer can be a big help.

It is also possible, however, to have a more ongoing skin issue called eczema. Eczema is an ir-ritated, dry, red, itchy and some-times burning patch of skin. This is most common in kids, but certainly happens to people of all ages. It can be caused by exposure to irritants like soaps, detergents, cosmetics, or certain fabrics, or by stress, or even

by ones own immune system attack-ing the skin. Eczema tends to run in families. Often people with eczema also have allergies and/or asthma.

If you have eczema, or just very dry irritated winter skin, there are some things you can do at home to help. Water on the skin actually causes drying, so avoiding excessive hand washing and bathing can help. Using luke warm water is less irritat-ing to the skin than hot water. After bathing (and regularly at other times as well), dab yourself dry (instead of rubbing) and immediately put on a skin moisturizer. Use the greasiest and plainest stuff you can tolerate. Scents and other additives can be potential irritants. When bathing, consider using a mild soap like Dove, or a non soap cleanser. You can try short term use of over the counter hydrocortisone on a particu-larly irritated spot, but if you are not getting anywhere within a week or so, its time to see your doctor.
