Plano Community Band Performs Music for Life Concert

as published in the October 2014 edition of ACB Journal, the monthly publication of the Association of Community Bands

In the summer of 2013, the Plano Community Band learned that they had been extended an invitation to perform in July 2014 at the nationally recognized Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas on Student Leadership Day. This great honor was bestowed upon us due to the vision of one of the most respected and honored musicians and conductors in the State of Texas, principal conductor and musical director of the Plano Community Band, Tommy Guilbert.

Tommy was so excited and thrilled to have this opportunity to showcase the group of musicians with whom he had been working for thirteen years, challenging us and steadily improving the caliber of music and level of performance. Tommy entitled our TBA concert “Music for Life” which sums up his philosophy of community bands. Tommy wanted to instill in our audience that whatever the circumstances, music can be with you through all stages of life.

On May 21, 2014, we lost our mentor, teacher and friend after a battle with cancer. Tommy conducted his last concert on May 4, 2014. Our fearless leader was gone, but there was never any thought of canceling the TBA concert—we had to do it for Tommy. Associate Conductor Jim Carter stepped up to the plate and took over where Tommy had left off. Jim became our rock and our sounding board and had the daunting task of preparing the band, both musically and emotionally, for what would be our most important performance to date.

After completing our summer concert series in the park in Plano, it was finally time to go to San Antonio. There’s nothing like a good band trip to get everyone’s spirits up—unless the air conditioner in the bus breaks down. What better way to bond with your fellow band members than sweating in a hot bus for six hours on a Texas highway in July. Nevertheless, we arrived in San Antonio on Sunday evening ready for rehearsal. Our guest performer, 13-year old trumpet phenom Geoff Gallante, was waiting for us at the (cool) rehearsal spot, ready to show us how much he had improved since he performed with us in Plano in 2011. Rehearsal went extremely well—almost too well for the superstitious--and we headed to the hotel.

It was a sleepless night for many with anticipation growing and adrenaline starting to flow. Early Monday morning we arrived at the convention center in downtown San Antonio. As we entered the Lila Cockrell Theater with its 2300 empty seats, we wondered how many would be filled. Most of us had never played in a hall this large. Finally, the first warm-up chord was played and after Jim cut us off, the sound continued to ring and we all confirmed that everything we had heard about the impressive acoustics here was true.

We cleared the stage and watched as 1700 people filled the auditorium. Tommy had warned us this would be our toughest audience: student musicians and (gasp!) band directors. Richard Hernandez, TBA President, presented Jim with a special award and then Denise Guilbert (Tommy’s wife and oboist in the band) was brought forward and given an award in Tommy’s name, after Executive Director Mike Brashear told the audience about Tommy. The applause was deafening and the standing ovation unprecedented. The Band was also standing, with tears running down most of our faces. As the applause died down and the audience took their seats, Jim could

only think, “Great. Denise is bawling and she has a huge English Horn solo three minutes into the opening piece.”

But the show must go on, so through tear-blurred eyes, we kicked off the concert with Arturo Marquez’s Danzón No. 2. Guest conductor Richard Floyd (Austin Symphonic Band) led us in Eric Whitacre’s The Seal Lullaby; Michael Browning (trombone—PCB) conducted Stephen Bulla’s Mancini! and Buddy Mattei (tenor sax—PCB) directed his own composition, Return With Honor. Geoff Gallante wowed the audience with his technique in The Yellow Rose of Texas Variations by Lewis Buckley and jazz standard How High the Moon. Interim Principal Conductor Jim Carter brought down the house conducting Rossano Galante’s Mt. Everest, and our finale, Monkey Business, a wild circus march by Plano, Texas composer David Lovrien. We put on a show few will forget.

Piece after piece, the notes came easily that day because we were playing from our hearts. This was a performance of a lifetime, and we left everyone in the audience asking, “Was that really a community band?” Tommy—this one was for you.

Musical moments are the times when something special happens while on stage performing together. It is when emotions are released and you have that feeling of pride, joy and accomplishment that make the hairs on your arm stand up, tears well up your eyes or a lump form in your throat. This is what I experienced at TBA. The vision for the PCB is to keep moving the bar up from the TBA convention performance. This will be a difficult task, but Tommy would definitely try. That is the Tommy way. That is the PCB way.”

Jim CarterAssociate Conductor and Interim Principal Conductor, Jim Carter was born in Texas City, Texas, and has made Plano home since 1969, going through the Plano schools and the band program at Plano Senior High. During his high school days, Jim was privileged to have played with Doc Severinsen and Alan Vizzutti, and his first love always seemed to be jazz. After graduation, he was selected to play with the National Bandmasters Association Jazz Band, performing with Marvin Stamm at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Jim attended Sam Houston University on a music scholarship, receiving his degree in Music Education in 1991. While at Sam Houston, Jim studied under Dr. Fisher Tull, Dr. Gary Sousa and Dr. Rod Cannon, headed up the recording and archiving of concert performances and was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi. After teaching a couple of years, Jim returned to Plano and began working in the communications field. He currently holds the position of Director of A/V and Computer Services for the 4,500 member Custer Road United Methodist Church. To keep music in his life, Jim joined the Plano Community Band in 1993 as the baritone saxophone player. Jim also plays with many Dallas area jazz and big bands. He became the Band’s associate conductor in 1995.

Michael BrowningMichael Browning is the Fine Arts Chair and Director of Band and Orchestra at John Paul II High School in Plano, Texas. Before beginning his teaching career in the Garland ISD, Mr. Browning was a trombonist in the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West stationed in San Francisco, California. As a trombonist, Mr. Browning has performed with the Ft. Worth Symphony, The Manhattan Transfer, Dallas Wind Symphony, Dallas Jazz Orchestra, Metallica, the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra of San Francisco, Dallas Civic Wind Ensemble, the salsa band Avance, as well as many recording sessions.Outside of the educational and musical worlds, Mr. Browning enjoys working on his soon-to-be antique Land Cruiser and riding motorcycles. Mr. Browning is very thankful for the patience of his wife Rebecca, and very proud of his sons, Geoffrey (Whoop!), Reed (Sic’ Em’), and Matthew.

Clifton JonesClifton Jones writes and arranges music for band, orchestra, jazz ensemble and woodwind ensembles. He is a native of Houston, Texas, and studied composition and theory at Trinity University, and with Dr. Michael Horvit at the University of Houston, and arranging with Shelly Berg at San Jacinto College. Mr. Jones plays clarinet in the Austin Symphonic Band in Austin, Texas and has written many works dedicated to them, and their director, Richard Floyd. He currently teaches woodwind methods and jazz ensemble in the College Station ISD in College Station. He also works as a volunteer with the Austin Steam Train Assoc. in Cedar Park, Texas.
