He had help from Billy Bourgeous, who is a retired cook and res- taurant owner, and Joan Myers helped cut up the pota- toes. I got in their way at times. We had 38 come to breakfast. Every camper came and ate and most of the park rangers and camp hosts attended the ice cream party, potluck and breakfast. Thanks to everyone for making these events possible and fun. Garrick and Diane Melton were there. Head Ranger Jim Hutton was there also. Tokens were given to all. Later in the show Clay Courtright came and presented me as an Honorary Emigrant Springs Park Ranger and gave me an Oregon State Parks patch and a wooden Emigrant Springs necklace. I want to thank Trever West, Bella and Holland for help-ing me pass out all of my goodies. Katie Johnson was sick and could not help or play this weekend. The John-son's camped a couple of days and then went to Boise. Julia Milleson drove to Emigrant Springs two days in a row from Milton Freewater. Mark Ludwick drove all three days from Umatilla. Wendy Williamson drove from Cove all three days. All of these are dedicated people who go the extra mile to support the BMOTFA. One special event we have had each year is the dancing dolls. The Croghan sisters, Margie Vaughn, Jan Post, and Tammy Croghan, and mother, Bethel, danced those dolls to the tune of Raggedy Ann, played by the fiddlers. All the children gathered around so they could watch them dance. The girls’ father, John Croghan, made the dolls long ago. This was enjoyed by all. Saturday after breakfast everyone hooked up and broke camp, bid good-byes until we meet to play again. This ended a very special time. We enjoyed ourselves and had good weather. We had people from Uganda, New York and many other states attend besides people from our surrounding area. If you have never been to our Emigrant Springs campout put a note down to attend in 2014. The dates are July 7th through July 13th, 2014. Hope to see the same faces and a lot of new faces. Thanks for all of you for your support. "We are better people when we are there for others." Denny Langford, President

Grant County News It’s always quiet before the storm or so a saying goes. That’s what it seems like in Grant County as it’s pretty quiet here right now but things will hopping before long. Our jams have been hit and miss with so many musicians doing summer things. Seems as though while music is important, it doesn’t take place above marketing puppies (the Johnson family), medical things (Darrel Hilton, Lynne Wilson, Barbara Sullivan) or outings with the grandkids. But things will kick into gear when we perform at the County Fair in just a couple weeks, then come back in a mere month to play for Cycle Oregon. Enjoyed what little time I had at Emigrant Springs. If my new canine had felt better we would have stayed longer. He ended up having surgery two days later. Anyway Denny asked if I’d share the recipe for the chicken which was the meat course at the potluck, so here goes: 2-3 pounds of chicken thighs with skin removed, salted, then dip into flour, placing in a baking pan. Mix together 1

can cranberry sauce, 1 package onion soup mix and 8 oz. Russian salad dressing. Pour over chicken and bake until done. Variation: use Orange marmalade instead of cran-berry sauce. If you have questions give me a call. On the subject of food, I would love to have the entertainers up for a bit to eat while in town for the County Fair and Cycle Oregon. Morrow County News It has been real quiet on the music scene this month. About the only thing that happened was Bill and Lori Meyers’ 50th wedding anniversary at Hermiston which Wests and us attended. I spent a couple of days helping the neighbor move some cattle around. It’s just been too hot for an old man to go out and wander around, haven’t even been fishing. Here I sit with Sweat upon my brow. I know I should be Doing something right now. The sun is up And hot it is, I’ll just sit here And let my cold drink fizz. I know I should Go out and do some work But In the shadows Old man lazy does lurk. Oh well, As they say There will always be Another day. Till next time in a tune, Adios amigo, Bob & Judy Stevens I always love a good dog, he doesn’t do anything for po-litical reasons.

Umatilla County News We had a good turnout for the Emigrant Springs campout. It’s fun for old friends to get together, play music and get caught up on all the old stories. It was good to see Julia Milleson make it up from Milton Freewater by herself. It was also great that the girls brought their mother, Bethel Croghan from Elgin. July 6 our children hosted a 50th anniversary celebration for Lorre and I. There was a lot to eat and lots of music provided by family and friends. Our weekly music activities here around Hermiston have been holding up strong through the summer with a good turn out, even though this time of year is very busy. The only thing you can control in life is the energy you put in it. Keep the Rosin on the causin. Bill & Lorre Meyers

Union County News Greeting from Pair a Dice Ranch in High Valley The only real news I have this month is for those of you who are not going to the Grant County Fair, we will be playing August 10th at the Grassroots here in Union. This year we will be playing down by the Post Office from 1:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. So if you hanging around wondering “what should I do with myself today” come on out and join us. Blessings to you and your Families Pat & Nancy Bruce

Editor’s Bulletin Board My sixth time at Wallowa Fiddle Tunes Workshop was the best ever for me, partly because I’ve improved so learning new tunes is easier now. Also this year the intermediate and advanced level fiddle teachers rotated through each of those classes. My core teacher was Lisa Ornstein, who taught French-Canadian, Appalachian old-time, and Cajun styles. John Weed taught Irish; Chris Kokesh bluegrass; and Andy Emmert swing and old-time tunes. As Denny reported, following Wallowa some of us moved our camps to Emigrant Springs until Sunday. After four days at home I headed to Kittitas, WA to jam on the weekend prior to my first week of that fiddle camp. I sure like retirement! I took the intermediate class by Stuart Williams, who has taught there for 16 years. His class fills very quickly but new applicants get priority. We learned 13 tunes of the 14 on his list for this workshop. Following Kittitas I attended the Five Suns Bluegrass Festival in Moses lake. On Friday it was 101°F but the bands were “hot” also. When “The Boxcars” came on stage, the MC announced that Ron Stewart has won the IBMA Banjo Player of the Year and also Fiddle Player of the Year. Ron is the only musician to ever win in more than one instru-ment at the International Bluegrass Music Association awards. Adam Steffey has won Mandolinist of the Year nine times! I bought the band’s latest CD, Its just A Road. I’m resigning as editor on or before the April, 2014 issue. If you want to be the editor, call Denny. It is an appointed position that the board must approve, but let Denny know if you are willing to do it. I will pass on to the next editor the Microsoft Publisher software, photos, and Excel files used to create the Rosin Dust mailing labels, etc. Our annual bulk mail permit costs $200 and expires March 27. 2014. The permit is not transferable. To mail the Rosin Dust from a different Post Office a new permit must be established. This is why I’m giving so much advance notice. The deadline for submissions is the 24th of the prior month. Please submit articles by email to: [email protected] If you have to mail your article by US Post Office, then allow at least two business days for delivery to: Richard and Karen Rubicam 2539 9th St. Baker City, OR 97814. 541-523-3721
