Week 7 26th August 2013
BLUE Class Despite the great number of staff and students at Cromehurst being ill during the last few weeks, Blue class has still
been having a fantastic term. The boys have connected well with each other and have been achieving great things
in social skills and work skills and especially in communication. During Education Week last week we shared with the
whole school at assembly how the school’s PBEL expectations are being met in Blue class. “Learning Together”, “Being
Friendly” and “Being Safe” are practiced on a daily basis with such things as sitting happily together during morning
circle and group times, shaking hands with each other and new people they meet, and wearing hats and keeping
hands to themselves are just a few of the achievements they can pride themselves on. Some new things the class has
been doing his term because of the developing social skills are: walking to and visiting Red class where we have be-
gun to play indoor Bocce with them; visiting white and yellow classes during some of their programs and playing ball
games together in gum tree playground. Blue class and other secondary students participate with me, Gary and Mi-
chael in community access going bushwalking and exploring. This has also been a wonderful extension to the class
and individual skills. Welcome back to Liz and thank you to Nimali and Karen for doing a wonderful job filing in while
she was away.

Welcome to week 7
As we commence the downhill run to the end of the term it appears that the viral bug that swept through
the school over the last two weeks has not yet completely moved on. Although staff absence has been
reduced we still have students who are either on their first or second round of the virus. In order to attempt
to keep all our students as well as possible please do not send your child to school if they are extremely
unwell. Some of our students have compromised immune systems and are vulnerable repeated infections.
The weather has been extremely cold over the last week but as we approach the last week of winter
hopefully September will bring some warmer weather and better health for everyone.
A reminder to families to fill in and return the medical forms that were sent home two weeks ago. Please
fill in the required information and return it to school as soon as possible including any medications only
given at home and any allergies or conditions regardless of how long it has been since the condition af-
fected your child. The school will contact you if your child’s Health Care Plan is due for reviewing as these
will also now need to be uploaded into the ERN system. This is part of our commitment to ensuring the
health and safety of all students in our school.
Our annual bus trip to post-school program centres is tomorrow, August 27 with our Support Teacher Transi-
tion Eileen Lyons. The school bus will be transporting parents who have indicated they are travelling with
us. These trips are very informative and assist parents in decision making regarding the options for students
following the completion of school. We are very grateful to Eileen Lyons for organising these annual visits
and to Claire Saunders for driving the bus which enables parents to attend.
Two years ago our school participated in The Positive Partnerships initiatives have been developed
and delivered by Partnerships between Education and the Autism Community (PEAC) and fund-
ed by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Rela-
tions through the Helping Children with Autism package. We found it very useful in developing
strategies, routines and resources to make our school more Autism friendly. I have received infor-
mation regarding parent workshops which are being conducted across NSW for parents of stu-
dents with Autism, for more information about the workshop call 1300 881 971. If parents are una-
ble to attend a workshop there is a website which offers some online modules as well as ideas
and resources for families. To learn more visit www.positivepartnerships.com.au.
Progress at the Lindfield site is now very obvious which is exciting. Updated photos are in this newsletter
however by the time of publication they will be a week old so even more work will have been completed.
We keep celebrating the relatively dry weather. Countdown update (if the schedule remains unchanged)
-111 school days. The next meeting regarding the rebuild is Tuesday 27 August and any updates provided
at that time will be communicated in the following newsletter.
Let the countdown continue.
Christine
Jack, James, Kai, Ashlee, Lex and Gleo continue to participate in Motor Group activities with
their friends in KR each Wednesday. Lex and Gelo are keen to greet Miss Rampton as we arrive
at their door. We join the group on the floor before moving to our group activity. It is a busy
time as we move round the activities, playing with our friends.
Term 3 is racing along and Aqua Class students continue to work hard in all their activities
throughout the week.
They all enjoy painting first thing on Monday mornings and have created a great picture
for Father’s Day. Be patient until Sunday Dads! Paddy is a very careful artist who shows
good techniques.
Shopping at IGA at Westleigh is proving very successful. All students are shopping and all
have increased their independence and are locating their items without any assistance.
Chris has recently begun shopping for home and he has improved each week – a natu-
ral shopper! They are learning to look at the final price on the screen and getting the
correct money out of their wallets to hand to the cashier.
Computer skills on Tuesday mornings are improving as students learn to type favourite
songs and cut and paste pictures to illustrate the song - not forgetting to save their great
work. James and Hikaru know their way around the computer and have created some
good song sheets.
Swimming on Tuesday afternoons is popular as they all keep swimming for a full 30 – 40
minutes. Their fitness and stamina has improved as have their strokes. Xavier loves the
water and needs no prompting to keep swimming laps.
Canteen continues to improve students’ sandwich making skills each Wednesday and
Sarah makes perfect sandwiches each week. She has nearly mastered wrapping them in
paper, which is not an easy task.
Thursday is work experience for most of the students. Chris and Damian do not go to
work but do work skills in class and other work jobs around the school. Damian is our resi-
dent gardener and he enjoys watering our vegies – lettuces, spinach, herbs, tomatoes,
capsicums and sunflowers. Hopefully we will soon be using our lettuces for canteen.
Friday is community access day, with Aqua students going to Abbotsleigh pool or Castle
Hill gym after a good cooking session. We all enjoyed zucchini fritters and hot fruit salad
last week – yum!
Thank you to Gary for all his help in Aqua class and for supporting the students in their
many activities each day.

Be Safe Bike Day
Tuesday 13th August 2013
Our “Be Safe Bike Day” in Week 5 was a great success. We set up a bike course with road signs, a pedestri-
an crossing and a round-about on the concrete area at the front of the school. Every class had lesson
about being safe on bikes, and looking at safety signs they might see on the road. Then they had the
chance to ride bikes, trikes, scooters and even a go-cart! Some of our senior students enjoyed riding our
new 2-wheeler bike, and were very fast (but safe!) on this. We finished with scooter races and bike races,
and all students were awarded ribbons for their wonderful enthusiasm and effort.
Thank you to every Cromehurst students for participating, being safe by wearing helmets and riding safely,
and doing your BEST on our Bike Day. The photos below will show the FUN had by all J.
Thank you to staff also, for your efforts in setting up, packing up and joining in with great enthusiasm. A spe-
cial thank you to James Yasbic, Damian Vella, Melinda and Rebecca for your extra help on the day
