Critical Analysis Using Blooms Taxonomy: Social Networking
What is Blooms Taxonomy?
Bloom's Taxonomy is a multi-tiered model of
classifying thinking according to six cognitive levels
of complexity. The levels have often been depicted
as a stairway, which encourages learners to climb
to a higher level of thought.
Your Task
The following exercises are aligned with the six
levels ofBlooms Taxonomy. With your group,
complete the following questions on another sheet
of paper (each group member should write on their
own paper). Discuss the questions as you work. All
group members should have the same answers for
each question! Notice how the questions progress as you go along. Consult the
synthesis essay sources as you work.
1. Knowledge: Remember previously learned information
Verbs: tell, list, locate, write, find, arrange, define, describe, label, match,
memorize
Using the articles as a reference, define social networking. List as many (at least four) examples of social networking sites that you can
think of.
2. Comprehension: Demonstrate an understanding of facts
Verbs: classify, identify, paraphrase, predict, recognize, discuss, describe,
translate
Explain in your own words what it means to be isolated. Think of a person you know who uses social networking often. Write a
description of that person without naming any names. Be sure to discuss their
involvement in social media. It can be a person you know, a character in a
book, movie, or TV show, or any other figure that fits the description.
3. Application: Apply knowledge to actual situations.
Verbs: apply, demonstrate, interpret, illustrate, show, sketch, solve, dramatize
Using a Venn diagram, compare and contrast Facebook users with peoplewho do not use Facebook. Pay attention to the types of relationships that both

groups have and how they communicate. Refer to the Pew Internet Survey,
among the others.
4. Analysis: Break down objects or ideas into simpler parts and find evidence to
support generalizations
Verbs: calculate, categorize, model, infer, experiment, examine, diagram,
discriminate
Refer to the survey results and think about the role (if any) that SocialNetworking Sites play at Hoover High School. Write a response and explain in
4-5 sentences if you feel that it unites the student body or if it hurts
communication.
5. Synthesis: Compile component ideas into a new whole or propose alternative
solutions
Verbs: arrange, construct, design, revise, formulate, generate, compose, devise
Using the entire source pack as a starting point, imagine the ideal socialnetworking site. What features would it have? How would you communicate
on it with other users? What would its name be? What does it look like?
Discuss with your group members, and then sketch out a design of the
homepage on plain white paper. You may turn in one sketch per group.
After you have sketched out your homepage, write a paragraph explanation ofthe features of the social networking site that you created.
6. Evaluation: Make and defend judgments based on internal evidence or externalcriteria.
Verbs: assess, judge, justify, support, value, interpret, defend, conclude, appraise
This is an INDIVIDUAL activity. Each group member should assess thesources in the packet and choose which would be useful for his or her paper.
Each member should take a note card and list the three (3) sources that best
offer support of his or her claim and the one (1) source from the other side of
the argument.
