May 1st
Well this holiday started as pretty much any other for me...panic, sweat,
irrational images of planes bouncing around and toppling down to
earth from a great height and the sweet solution to it all...the
consumption of copious amounts of alcohol. I thought I had been
clever in bringing some mini wines with me but on reaching customs,
realised I would not be able to take them through security so sat there
on the floor classily downing them at 8.30am. (We got a cab to
Gatwick this time as it was an 11am flight which meant a 9am check in
plus the hour and a half journey to Gatwick.)
We got through security into the lounge, where my main priority was to findmore booze (yes, I am ridiculously scared of flying).
And a nice surprise for me was that we travelled on the smallest plane
ever and had Mr. Newly Qualified Captain manning the controls today
and he enjoyed rolling the plane from side to side and bouncing it up
and down. On landing, we had to turn sharply over the sea to land on
the short runway. The plane came to a halt literally just before the end
of the runway. This sobered me up somewhat, (as did the fact that we
landed in a thunderstorm!)
We had no idea how to get from Split to Trogir (about 45 minute drive
away) as no one seemed to know which bus went there so we ended
up getting a lift for 10 Hrk (1) with a random local in his battered
Renault. He dropped us at the harbour and we quickly found our Hotel
Concordia (generously paid for by Jons mum as a gift) and we were
put in the top room (14). It was lovely had en suite bathroom, great
view over the harbour and plenty of space. We then ventured out into
the rain to explore. The island is so small it only took about 15 mins to
walk around. We headed to Kula Kamerlengo XIII XV which is a fortress.
We had a great view of the city from up there.

After that we stopped at Riviera for a coffee and then crossed the
bridge to Ciovo. There was not a lot to see and clouds were forming so
we headed back to Trogir to find a restaurant. We ate pizza in Top
Baloon as the rain poured around us. Dinner was okay not that nice.
Afterwards we took pictures from the bridge and then headed to bed
as I was now quite hungover and tired. I actually fell asleep at 8.30pm
and woke again at 10pm thinking I had been asleep for 12 hours...stillslept badly though.
2nd May
We had a continental breakfast on the patio, packed and headed for
a walk round the town again it is really pretty. We took our stuff to try
and find the bus stop to get to Split. (Note to self NEVER EVER take a
wheelie suitcase away again...)
We eventually found the bus station and in true style, there were no
names on the buses or places to find out information so we had to relyon moronically repeating Drive.....Split? to get us on the right bus. Note
bus drivers in Croatia get a kick out of panicky tourists and have no
social conscience.
We eventually got on a bus and enjoyed the 45 minutes ride through
fields and over mountains to Split.

Once at the harbour
and off the bus, we
were harassed by
locals begging us to
take accommodation
in their houses (a very
common occurrence
in Croatia). We
moved on that
afternoon to Brac so
we put our luggage in
a holding bay (for
about 1 an hour).
There is a huge
outdoor market as you
enter the town from
which Jon bought me
a skirt.
We wandered throughthe Diocletians Palace
area which is very
pretty lots of cobbles
and history mixed in
with very
cosmopolitan shops
and bars. We stopped
on Ban Mladenova at
a delicious smoothie bar run by an Australian/Croation lady who was
very nice and helpful. The bar is called Tonik and at 2.50 for a litre of
drink, is the cheapest smoothie bar I have ever been to! We headedNorth and sat in one of the few green areas in Split and then started
heading back towards the harbour to get our boat to the island. I wish
we had spent a bit longer there now looking back as I enjoyed it more
than I realised at the time!
After the lovely ferry ride on the Jadrolinjia ferry (which are extremely
luxurious with bars, plasma screens and large reclining seats on board
and cost a maximum of 5 between the islands,) to Supertar on the
North of Brac, we were harassed again by women pushing their private
accommodation and one woman in particular was persistent and said
we could stay at her place for 100 hrk (10). She said there was noobligation but her sales pitch said otherwise so we went with her to her
house 5 mins down the coast. She was a bit strange and we were a bit
paranoid she would jump out of the wardrobe in the middle of the
night and kill us in our sleep (I have seen Hostel and know what
happens to travellers in Eastern Europe.) I changed and we headed out
to explore.

We walked round the harbour which is very pretty and we stopped at
Bistro Palute for dinner. It cost about 5.50 for a steak dinner. It is right on
the seafront and did the most amazing roasted vegetables. We drank
wine and beer until the sun set and then moved to Arca (a local bar on
the back streets of Supetar). We had our Zlatorogs (Croatian beer) and
watched as five guys entered the bar separately and then randomly
started singing in harmony. Was nice but random!
We got lost on our way back to the apartment but eventually stumbled
on the right road, went to bed and barely slept.

3rd May
It started quietly at about 7am and then by 9am as we were on our
way to the bus station, it was pouring and cold. I was gutted and had
multiple mosquito bites. We waited for our bus...and waited. We
wanted to drive the 2 hours South to Bol over the mountain, but there
was no one in the ticket office and no information or timetable
anywhere. It feels like Mexico all over again. We eventually found a bus
that was heading to Bol about an hour later than planned and as we
sat on the bus, a lady overheard us talking and offered us

accommodation in Bol. We accepted, although Lydia had already
organised accommodation for us through her friend (but I was still
scared of her so was quite happy to choose the new woman).
The journey was pretty although scary as we were driving over the
mountain in heavy rain and mist on a narrow path. I was holding my
breath for most of the drive.
Once off the bus, our hostess took us to her apartment which was
amazing. I recommend her place to any visitors to Bol. It was 10 a
night for an entire studio apartment, fully equipped with kitchenette
and en suite bathroom (Kanun, Domovinskog rata 30, 21420, BOL)
Once unpacked and acclimatized to the rain, we went for a wander
round the town. It is another harbourside town, very small but pretty.
There is a church on one end of the town and the infamous Zlatni Rat
beach at the other end. We had a late lunch at Bistro Pumparela and
then headed to the bakery (or Pekara) to buy breakfast for tomorrow. We headed back to the apartment as it was raining too heavily to do
anything and when it calmed down eventually we headed out to walk
towards Zlatni Rat. It is famous as the tide affects the shape of the
beach and it is different all the time. On the way to Zlatni we walked
through a forrested area which was beautiful but spoilt by the huge
Westernised hotels that give off lots of light pollution and spoil the
otherwise authentic Croatian scenery. We sat on Zlatni watching the

sunset and had the beach to ourselves. It was a highlight of my holiday
as the sunset was so dramatic.
Once the sun had disappeared we headed back to town for somedrinks. We stopped in Topolino on the sea front for a drink and to hear
the live singer and marvel at the olive oil on the tables that resembles a
sample of marine life. After a few drinks naturally Jon wad hungry so we
headed to Skalinada Pizzeria (Croatia is filled with pizzerias) and had a
delicious pizza. Then we stopped off at the Marinera pub (an amazing
pub kitted out like a ship with stain glass windows). Very cool place.

I was looking forward to my day on the beach today I opened the
curtains...to torrential rain. It was so bad we couldnt leave the
apartment and ended up watching the weather channel all day
praying for a heatwave. (Unfortunately, the forecast only covered
Italy!) We decided to leave Bol as we had explored most of it and
hoped the weather would be better on the next island (Hvar). We
braved the weather to find out when the boat goes and found out it
left at 3pm so we packed up and headed to the marina and waited.
At the last minute, a guy with a hat who looked more like a crack
addict turned up with our tickets which cost us 1.11 for the 20 minute
journey across the Adriatic. By this time, our fellow Brit/FBI spies had
arrived at the marina. (Jon had convinced me that this British couple
we had met in Supetar were following us for some reason and I had
started to believe him).
The ferry was kitted out like a plane, (except with actual legroom!) and
a bar and big plasma screen. As the weather was so bad, it was a
really choppy, bouncy ride which neither Jon or I enjoyed.

We were grateful to arrive in Jelsa.
I wasnt impressed with Jelsa on first sight but looking back, it was one
of my favourite places I saw. It was a very unspoilt town, not prepared
for tourists but thats why I liked it. It is cobbled back streets and
beautiful sea scape, forrest and greenery. The more we saw the more I
liked it. We had been recommended Hotel Murvica by our previous
hostess so headed there to find accommodation for the night. The guy
we met was not at all endearing and I thought he was conning us until
his wife turned up and charmed us into taking the 240Hrk (24 a night)
apartment. It was really nice again and we were very happy.
We went for a walk East along the coastal path through the forest and
sat on the pier for a while before heading back to Hotel Murvica for the
best dinner I have ever had! My grilled chicken and veggies cost me
6.50 and there is something magical about the way the food was
cooked. Highly recommended. We were given complimentary Grappa
shots which we sipped through gritted teeth and then sampled some
of the local wine in a couple of bars. I really liked the intimate and
homely feel of Bar Pjace, where a beer and wine came to 2.30!

We decided to move on again today so checked out and as we left
the building, surprise we bumped into Mulder and Sculley who had
stayed in the same hotel! (Actually they were called Julie and Alan
and were in fact very nice!) We had a few hours before the bus came
to take us to Hvar Town so we wandered West up what seemed like
1000 steps to get up high enough for a good view.
It was so pretty walking along the wild flowers growing on the hedges
and pretty gardens. It felt like a different place. We had an ice cream
at Eis Cafe Riva (there are many ice cream places all over Croatia and
everyone seems to have one all the time!). We spotted Smoky and the
Volcano as we nicknamed them and had succumbed to the fact that
they would be everywhere we went. We got our bags and found the
bus stop (a wooden sign showing a truck in the middle of nowhere)
and waited ages for the bus. Smoky and the Volcano showed up and
we chatted until the bus came for Hvar Town.

The journey was lovely through vineyards and over mountains again and 40
minutes later we were in Hvar Town which is the opposite of Jelsa. It is the
touristiest island in Croatia and is huge compared to the others.

We went to find a tourist office and found one where the women
running it were horrible and tried to charge me 4.50 for a map of the
island that I made the mistake of touching. They organised
accommodation for us with a family that lived up 1000 steps. A weird
hippy guy turned up to take us there and we felt uncomfortable
staying in that place as it was in their house and hadnt been
decorated since the Victorian era (or so it seemed). It cost us 125Hrk a
night (12.50) but compared to what we have been staying in, this is
very average.
We went for the obligatory walk round the island and had a very British
packed lunch on the pier and I read some of my book The Accident
Man which I couldnt put down! We had a nap in our room as we are
both feeling the effects of travelling constantly and as we went to sleep,
the rain started again with a vengeance. We did venture out again for
dinner however and to a bar which was up on a hill (Alga) where we
were the only patrons. (Not surprising as a huge thunderstorm had
erupted). Went to bed earlyish and watched the amazing storm.
6th May
After a very wet night, it is lovely and sunny today. And the soaked
cobble stones are lovely and slippery under my non gripped flip flops
which made the walk back down all the stairs with the luggage a lot
more fun. We went to the left luggage place to leave our stuff until the
3pm ferry to Korcula but surprise, as it was Sunday, he closed at 1-3pm. As
it was 11am there was no point leaving it so we dismissed ideas of
climbing the mountain to see the castle and just sat by the sea and read.
I finally feel relaxed! It is quite hot today and Jon doesnt like direct

sunlight it burns his skin o something, so we move to Gariful Restaurant
which is on the end of a parade and smells amazing. Inside, the floors are
made of glass and they have an aquarium under your feet and they spit
roast lambs each day in the open spit. We drank wine and beer and I
read until the ferry office opened and I got the tickets which were about
3 each.
The ferry crossing was nice today. We headed to Vela Luke (on the West
coast of Korcula). Once again, a random group of guys started singing
on the ferry but as I was quite drunk it seemed perfectly normal. Luckily,
as we got off the ferry our bus was waiting for us. (We had read that there
is no transport on a Sunday which is not true and we read that every time
a ferry arrives in Vela Luka there is a bus waiting to take us to Korcula
Town. Luckily for us, both were there.
This island is beautiful very green and luscious. On arrival, there were
several people offering us rooms. It became a bidding war but we
agreed to stay in a guys place as his English was okay and he offered us
free internet. He had a few rooms right by the bus station and while Jon
checked them out I checked the weather on the net. We stayed in a
room for 10 each but it stank of damp. I was sure my lungs were fillingwith asbestos. It was the worst accommodation we have had so far. We
escaped as soon as we could to explore. The town is very pretty. It is built
around a castle and the restaurants are placed around the edge of the
castle walls overlooking the sea and the shops are all encased within the
castle itself.

We had dinner and then headed toward the originally named
Cocktail Bar which was a three levelled bar in a turret. To get to the
top, you had to climb a really narrow ladder and then had a view over
Korcula, Orebic and the surrounding islands. It is a great bar and your
drinks arrive via a pulley that is sent up from the ground floor bar. It was
about 6.50 a cocktail though so quite pricey. We stayed for two drinks
and then headed back into town to Zak bar where Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire was playing. Had a not very nice glass of wine and by then
everywhere was closing up. I guess they still respect the sanctity of
early closing hours on Sunday. So we took a deep breath and headed
back to the apartment of stench.

May
Another beautiful day so we decided to go on a day trip to Lumbarda
(that Mike and Vinka had recommended to us). We had decided to
move onto Orebic across the water today and the ferry leaves at
7.15pm so we have a day to explore.
We left our bags in an internet cafe for 1 for the whole day and the
woman in there was great as she wasnt actually open but kindly said
she would come back at 6 to give our bags back. We had some
breakfast and got the bus to Lumbarda. We got on assuming we got
our tickets on board, but just as we were about to go, the driver cameand said I needed to get my tickets at the desk inside the station so I
jumped off and got them just as the bus was pulling out. It turned out to
be an hours ride, but we had no idea where to get off. The scenery
was amazing along the way it felt like we had left Croatia altogether
and were in paradise. We got off the bus randomly and started
walking. We knew there was a sandy beach somewhere so headed
towards the coast. We came off the road to find the most beautiful
place ever. It was unending green vineyards and fields, little stone
houses, mountain and the turquoise sea in the distance. I was

speechless. We kept walking and eventually came to a beach. It was
stony so we headed back to the path and saw that it went across the
island in the other direction too so we followed it and stumbled upon
Plaza Przina our sandy beach!
We swam and sunbathed for about an hour and a half, until it clouded
over.

Then we walked back in the general direction of the town to find out
where we got the bus back. We found an open internet cafe, so had a
coffee and found out the bus left from right outside, so we drank up
and flagged down the next bus we saw. We got back to Korcula and
were quite tired so I read b the dock while Jon had a nap. We didnt
do much until picking our bags up at 6 and then waiting for the boat to
leave. We got on it at 7 and it left at 7.25pm for the 20 min journey to
Orebic. We had looked online for a cheapish posh hotel as we both
wanted to have a couple of days relaxing with a swimming pool and
found the Bellevue (a German run hotel about a half hour walk from
the main town.) It was a long walk with luggage from the dock to the
hotel but luckily for us, Orebic is not ready for tourists and there is
nothing to do in town anyway. We eventually found the hotel and
found out it was cheaper than the internet had said. With taxes that
you pay on the mainland, it was 391 Hrk each (about 19 each a night)
so we booked 2 nights.
We had an amazing view across the sea to Korcula from our balcony
and overlooked the pool. We headed back into town after showering
to have a look and have dinner. There are lot of lemon trees lining the
streets and it is very quiet. We chose a restaurant up a hidden path
which was picturesque. There was no one else there and the food was
fantastic. A little husband and wife ran the Maslina VI.S Kojic but I felt
the old guy was laughing at us the whole time. We had salad, pizza
and with drinks it all came to 149 Hrk (15).

8th May
We had breakfast at about 9.30am (which was bread, honey, eggs,
fruit, yoghurt...) we filled up and headed out to the pool. We spent a
long time in the water trying out my underwater camera.
It is really hot today so we enjoyed the water. Again, we were pretty
much the only ones in there! It is so nice to sit still after all the travelling.
The next problem we encountered however is how to get to Dubrovnik
from here. The front desk said thee were two buses that left at 5am and
7am but we read in our guide that buses are frequent. That was not the
case. Jon headed into town to try and find out but it seemed no one
knows and there is no bus station. We ended up taking pictures of the
timetables and texting Jons mum to translate. It seems they are our
only options so we went back to the hotel and tried to book ourselves
on the Thursday 7am bus but it was full so we are going to have to
leave tomorrow, which means one less day of relaxing by this lovely
pool! We went to get some lunch at the hotel bar as there was a sign
saying all inclusive but I was told off by a mean lady who said I wasnt
appropriately dressed for the hotel and that OUR lunch wasnt free. It
would cost 10! (as much as a nights accommodation!) so we had to
make the trek into town to find something. However, there was
nowhere to eat! We ended up buying very questionable burgers from
a van. It tasted like dog meat or something. We headed back to the
pool and went in for a while longer and then it cooled down so we
dried off and had a shower and headed along the main road and
found Hotel Orebic where we stopped for dinner.

The woman who served us was freaky. She was like something off the
League Of Gentlemen. She wore a Morris dancers outfit and just
smiled and nodded. But the food was good. We ate on the terrace
overlooking the sea and watched the sunset. We walked back along
the coast to our hotel and as the entertainment was awful in the hotel,
we went back to the room and watched House and Jon fell asleep
and I finished that amazing book!

9th May
We were up at 6.40am to get that private bus. There were 8 of us in it
for the three hour drive to Dubrovnik. The drive went over lots of
mountain paths (scarily close to the egde) and we nearly crashed
twice but luckily made it through Lapada (the posh hotel, touristy area)
to the old town tourist office in one piece. The girls in the office spoke
great English and were very helpful. They sold us an apartment at the
top of old town which was a studio flat. It would cost us 10 a night so
we booked two nights and we were taken to it through the gorgeous
old town.
It is encased in a castle and you walk in and out through the
drawbridge. The town is surrounded by castle walls (which you can
walk round) but we werent prepared for the number of stairs. We had
to climb a ridiculous number to get to our place (as Dubrovnik is built

on hills). We finally got there and it was lovely. It was so high up we had
a panoramic of the city.
We unpacked and showered and then headed out. It is boiling today
(about 30 degrees) so walking around is difficult! The city is very ready
for tourists there are lots of brand shops mixed with little local places
and plenty of shade. The place has retained lots of original features
and is breathtaking. We stopped in a cafe in the main square and paid
3 for a roll, butter and a 7up. After our substantial breakfast we
headed to Prijeko (or Restaurant Row) as I call it. It is literally a row of
about 50 outdoor restaurants with people haggling for your business as
you look at each menu.

We met the Antonia (tourist office girl) back at the apartment at 2pm
to pay for the room and also to pay for the private airport transfer she
organised for us. (There is no easy way to get to the airport from here
without taking a series of buses. Antonia will drive us herself for 7
each.)
We had a map which highlighted beaches in Dubrovnik and were
determined to find a sandy one. We headed down the multitude of
stairs towards the pebbly beach but came out onto a hidden bar on
the cliff edge called Buza. It was lovely as you could sit on the cliff
having a drink getting your tan.
After a drink, we wandered around town and bought some wine and
beers to have after dinner (drinks are very expensive in Dubrovnik). We
showered, then headed out to Pizzeria Mirakul for lasagne which we
had both been craving. It was very good but a huge portion! Tips are
not commonplace here you generally just round the bill (blatiti) up to
the nearest round number.
After dinner we headed back to the apartment and I drank wine on
the balcony watching the sunset while Jon got a bad headache andsat there quietly!

I slept on the couch in the living room as I wanted to watch TV last
night. Needless to say it was not really sleep I had! We got up at 9amand headed into town, paid 5 each to tour the castle walls. Again,
there were lots of steps to climb but the views were amazing once up
there. It took about an hour and a half to walk round in 30 degree heat
again.

We eventually found it so had a drink and then headed down the cliff
to the stone platform where people were sunbathing and there was a
ledge down into the sea. I was too freaked by sea creatures to swim
but Jon eventually jumped in and paddled around for 15 minutes by
the rocks. I did want to but I know the scariest things live by rocks so I
asked Jon if we could try and find the sandy beach I had spotted while
walking around the walls so I could swim in shallow water.
To get there, we had to go outside the castle walls and past the tourist
office and we had to climb some rocks. There were quite a lot of
people on the only sandy spot in Dubrovnik so we sunbathed on a rock
and I tentatively clambered over the pebbles to get to the sea which
was gorgeous. We then played with some crabs and fed them grapes
until we got nice and sunburnt and headed back to our room for some
shade and a much needed shower.
On the way back we remembered an advert we had seen in Korcula
for a smoothie bar called Fresh. It looked good but was not open
there at the time and recommended we try the one in Dubrovnik. Jon
had taken a picture of the map showing where it was and we
happened to pass it on the way back to the room. It is a very funkytravellers bar that serves smoothies, healthy wraps and juices and then
in the evening alcohol. We couldnt resist having a smoothie and the
hummus wrap looked delicious so we shared one absolutely
gorgeous and all that came to 7. www.igotfresh.com

We headed back to the apartment, showered and both drank on the
balcony this time. We were being photographed by tourists walking
around the city walls as we were the only tourists sitting out (Jon in
sunhat and blanket over his legs to prevent from burning) so must have
looked a sight. We were papped by so many people it prompted my
Where Have I Been site where people exchange holiday pics with
each other in the background.
Neither of us were particularly hungry this evening but we loved those
wraps so much earlier that we decided to go and get another one at
about 8.30pm after quite a few drinks each. We had our wraps and a
few cocktails each and went inside the bar to have a look and ended
up sitting with some travellers and we chatted with them for the rest of
the night 2 Ozzies and an American. We headed back to the room
about 12.30am (Jon had to push me up all the steps as I was quite
drunk!)
11th May
Awake 7.30am. I am sad as its the last day. This country is so beautiful.
We went into town and got presents - Slivovic and honey for variouspeople and some Cherry Brandy for mum and dad. My gifts cost me
22 the shop is lovely but not cheap! After buying gifts we went to
Spaghetteria Toni (which was recommended in our guide) for some
Carbonara. Was okay. Then we headed back to the room to pack and
drink the remainder of our booze. Jons new nickname for me is Tippin
as in tipping over after last night.
We headed out to meet Antonia at the Pile Gate (entrance to
Dubrovnik) and on the way passed a ridiculous number of tourists.

Apparently cruise ships stop here every Friday so that is a particularly
busy day here. Antonia was late but got us to the airport in half an hour
(3pm) and our flight was 4.40pm. We had the quickest check in,
security etc ever and were sitting in the bar within 15 minutes of setting
foot in the airport if only America was that simple. We sat and drank
(well I did!) and waited and waited...there was no sign of our flight by
5pm. It eventually turned up at 5.30pm apparently there werent
enough planes at Gatwick or something.
In total, I spent about 500 with flights, accommodation and everything
else for 11 days.
We had a nice flight, apart from once we descended into the solid
Grey clouds over London the plane found it difficult to pierce them. I
wish we hadnt. It is miserable as sin here. Take me back to Dubrovnik!
