• The SDB Retractable is only part of a total fall protection system and the use of compatiblehardware and components is mandatory. The system components must meet federal, state, localor provincial regulations before being incorporated in a personal fall protection system. If you haveany concerns or questions, please contact your distributor or Safety Direct.

• Never clamp, knot or prevent the lifeline from retracting or being taut.

• Avoid working above the anchorage level to avoid an increased free fall distance.

• It is imperative for the safety and efficiency of operations that this manual be read and fullyunderstood by the worker before using any fall arrest system. ALL instructions containedherein must be carefully read and strictly followed.

• A fall could result in serious injury or death. Do not use any equipment unless properlytrained.

• The limit of one person only per fall arrest system must always be observed.

• Do not let go of the wire rope until it has completely rewound inside the SDB Retractable.

• The user must not exceed an angle of 30° and never move away from the vertical axis ofthe SDB Retractable for more than 10 ft. (3 m) (Figure 7, page 7).

• Care should be taken to avoid contact with all sharp edges which could cut the wire orsynthetic rope.

• Ensure adequate clearance exists in your fall path to prevent striking an object (Figure 4,page 6 and Figure 6, page 7). When the SDB Retractable is installed on a non-rigidanchor point, ensure the deflection of the system is taken into consideration within thecalculation of the total clearance required.

• For all assembly configurations:The anchoring to the structure must allow self-alignment of the SDB Retractable under theeffect of the force exerted on the wire rope. Anchorage dependant optional swivel carabinerwill be required in order to obtain proper alignment of the SDB Retractable.

6. FUNCTION AND DESCRIPTION

6.1 Function

6.1.1 The SDB Retractable automatically stops aperson’s fall. The SDB Retractable is primarilyintended to connect to a structure while theuser is moving vertically directly under the SDBRetractable (Figure 1). The SDB Retractable canalso be used in other positions as outlined inthe Figure 8 & 9, page 7 & 8 of this manual.

6.2 Description

6.2.1 The user is attached to the SDB Retractable bya wire rope or synthetic rope whose length isautomatically adjusted by a retracting springthat activates a drum on which the wire ropeor synthetic rope is coiled.

6.2.2 In the event of a fall, the drum is locked by twopawls which engage in a ratchet wheel underthe effect of the centrifugal force caused bythe acceleration of the falling mass attached tothe wire rope. The fall is stopped gradually bythe slide blocking of a disk braking system.

6.2.3 Because the wire rope or synthetic rope isconstantly tensioned between the user and theSDB Retractable, the user’s free fall distance isheld to a minimum by the disk braking system.

6.2.4 The SDB Retractable is a portable devicesupporting the following features:• lightweight;• two carrying handles (on model's 50 ft. or

greater);• easy attachment as the connector is kept

in an upright position;• the housing has no sharp edges.

6.2.5 Always choose a SDB Retractable where thewire rope or synthetic rope length fits theexpected distance travelled by the user.

7. INSTALLATION

7.1 Anchoring to the structure

7.1.1 An anchorage point is a secure point ofattachment for lanyards, lifelines or self-retracting lifelines. It has to be independent ofthe means of supporting the worker and musthave been selected by a qualified person. TheSDB Retractable must be connected to ananchorage point capable of supporting aminimum of 5,000 lbs. (22 kN) per attachedworker. Consult governing regulations asrevisions occur.

7.1.2 Never use an anchorage point that will notallow the carabiner or connecting device toclose. The anchor must be compatible with thecarabiner or connecting device and must notcause a load to be applied to the keeper.

7.2 Connecting to the harness

7.2.1 It is mandatory to use a full body harness forfall arrest.

7.2.2 Connect components on a safe surface wherethere is no risk of falling.

7.2.3 The point at which the harness is attachedmust be below the SDB Retractable (Figure 2).

7.2.4 The self-locking snap hook fitted on the end ofthe wire or synthetic rope must be attached tothe back D-ring of the user’s harness. It has avisual fall indicator that becomes visible aftera fall (Figure 3, page 6).

7.3 ClearanceThe clearance must be greater than 6 ft.(1.8 m) (Figure 4, page 6). When the SDB

Retractable is installed on a non-rigid anchorpoint, ensure the deflection of the system istaken into consideration within the calculationof the total clearance required.

7.4 Assembly ConfigurationThe most commonly used configuration is theSDB Retractable attached to a structure andthe user moves vertically directly under theSDB Retractable.

7.4.1 In another configuration, the SDB Retractableis suspended from a tripod (Figure 5).

7.4.2 If the longitudinal axis of the SDB Retractableis at an angle to the vertical, a qualified personmust check that all the risks connected withthis configuration have been correctly takeninto account. Safety Direct makes thefollowing recommendation:• Avoid moving away from the vertical plane,

one will swing from side to side in theevent of a fall and may hit an obstaclecausing injury (Figure 6).

WARNING

The user must not exceed an angle of 30° and nevermove away from the vertical axis of the SDBRetractable for more than 10 ft. (3 m) (Figure 7).

7.4.3 If the user is working on an inclined plane, therisk described in the preceding point does notapply. The fall distance will depend on theslope, the condition of the surface, etc…(Figure 8).

WARNING

Care should be taken to avoid contact with all sharpedges which could cut the wire or synthetic rope.

7.4.4 If the user is working on a sloped area, thelength of the SDB Retractable must be adaptedto the dimensions of the working area(Figure 9, page 8).

WARNING

For all assembly configurations:The anchoring to the structure must allow self-alignment of the SDB Retractable under theeffect of the force exerted on the wire rope.Anchorage dependant optional swivel carabinerwill be required in order to obtain proper alignmentof the SDB Retractable (Figure 10, page 8).

7.5 Operating environmentThe SDB Retractable can be used in thefollowing operating environments:• conditions generally found on an outdoor

building site;• in temperatures ranging from -31° F

(-35° C) to 176° F (80° C);• marine environments;• explosive environments: all internal parts

are non-sparking. The use of syntheticrope is recommended for this type ofapplication. Contact Safety Direct forfurther information.

• for work that involves spraying products(sandblasting, painting, etc) it is advisable toprotect the SDB Retractable againstcontaminants entering the housing.

7.6 Electrical hazardsTake extreme caution when working near oraround high voltage power lines: electricitycould pass through the SDB Retractable orconnecting devices resulting in electrocution.

7.7 Rescue operationA study should have been carried out to definehow (in terms of personnel and equipment) aninjured person is to be rescued. The rescueshould take no more than 15 minutes. Anylonger may endanger the safety and health ofthe person being rescued.

8. OPERATION

8.1 The user connects the wire rope (with a self-locking swivel eye snap hook) to his harnessdorsal D-ring and should move at a speed ofless than 6.6 ft./sec. (2 m/sec.), whichcorresponds to normal walking speed. The wirerope or synthetic rope winds and unwinds, exerting a light pull on the user; if any slackappears in the wire rope or synthetic rope, replace the device immediately.

8.2 If there are jerks in the rope the SDBRetractable may lock. The user must thenmove smoothly towards the SDB Retractableto unlock it. If the device keeps locking whenit should not, replace it.

8.3 In the event of a fall, the SDB Retractablestops the fall automatically, the user mustthen be rescued as quickly as possible, within15 minutes at most.

8.4 Once the user has unhooked from the wire orsynthetic rope, he should keep hold of the endto allow the wire or synthetic rope line to windback onto the reel. Do not let it freely retractwithout holding the line. If necessary, use a

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA)Z259.2.2-98 requires inspection, maintenanceand recertification annually, regardless of usage.

10.3 Wire rope or synthetic ropeExtend the complete length of the wire orsynthetic rope and examine it in order to spotdamage. Wire rope should be free of birdcageor loop formation, it must not be crushed, kink, cut, torn from sharp edges, etc. (Figure 11).Synthetic rope should be free of fuzzy, worn, broken or cut fibers. It should also be free ofany loose materials such as dirt, sand, petroleum, chemical contaminants or anyother foreign matter. A change in the originaldiameter of the rope is an indicator of aweakened area from extreme load.

10.4 SDB RetractablePull the end of the wire rope or synthetic ropesharply in order to make sure it locks. The SDBRetractable will stop the retraction of the wirerope or synthetic rope as soon as theactivation speed is reached. All equipment thatshows any sign of distortion or corrosion mustbe immediately removed from service.

10.5 Checking the deadlineCanadian Standards Association (CSA) requiresinspection, maintenance and recertificationannually regardless of usage. Before operatingthe SDB Retractable, read the deadline on thelabel. If the date has expired, do not use the SDBRetractable and send it back to Safety Direct orto an authorized dealer.

10.6 Swivel eye self-locking snap hookThe swivel eye self-locking snap hook isspecially designed so that should a fall occur, the indicator will activate, causing the swivelaxle to drop creating a gap between the swivelcomponent and the hook body (Figure 12).Always ensure that the indicator has not beenactivated before using the SDB Retractable. Allparts of the self-locking snap hook should befree of distortion. The keeper should be seatedinto the nose without binding and should notbe distorted or obstructed. The keeper springshould exert enough force to firmly close thekeeper. The keeper lock must prevent thekeeper from opening when closed.

10.7 Anchorage connectorAll parts of the carabiner should be free ofdistortion. The gate spring should exertenough force to firmly close the gate. Specialattention must be paid to the mechanism, which should close adequately. The safety barof the autolocking carabiner must complete itsrotation when closed.

12. TROUBLESHOOTING

12.1 Rewinding problemWhen the wire rope or synthetic rope does notrewind correctly into the casing, pull it until fullyextended and examine its condition (seesection 9). Let it rewind by itself while undertension, do not let go. Do not use productssuch as solvents on the SDB Retractable. If theproblem remains, this could indicate that theinside spring may be clogged or corroded, orthat the casing may have been distorted. In thatcase, do not use the SDB Retractable and sendit back to Safety Direct or to an authorizeddealer for servicing by a qualified person. If asection of the wire rope or synthetic rope doesnot rewind in the SDB Retractable, check theindicator on the swivel eye snap hook; it mayhave been involved in stopping a fall. The SDBRetractable must therefore be immediatelyremoved from service and sent back to SafetyDirect or to an authorized dealer for servicing.

12.2 Unwinding problemIf the wire rope or synthetic rope does notunwind normally or if it moves along in jerks, pullthe complete length of the wire rope or syntheticrope by hand and examine its condition (seesection 9). Let the rope retract without letting itgo. If the problem has not disappeared, send theSDB Retractable back to Safety Direct or to anauthorized dealer for servicing.

12.3 Jammed SDB RetractableIf the SDB Retractable is jammed, do not use it.Send it back to Safety Direct or to an authorizeddealer for servicing.

13. MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

13.1 Failure to maintain and store equipmentcarefully can result in damage and malfunctionthat could lead to a serious or fatal injury. Thegood condition of the wire rope and of the SDBRetractable is critical for safe use.

13.2 Maintenance and cleaningUnwind the complete length of the wire rope, clean it and lubricate it with a cloth lightlysoaked in oil. Let it rewind but do not let it go.Clean the outer side of the SDB Retractablewith a damp cloth.

Do not introduce outside elements (oil, solvents, etc.)inside the SDB Retractable.

13.3 Storage When the SDB Retractable is not in use, it mustbe kept in a dry environment and sheltered fromweather in order to prevent corrosion. Whenstored, the wire rope of the SDB Retractablemust be totally coiled in the casing.
