Blithfield Annual Bird Report 2015 Blithfield Bird Report – January 2015 January 2015. The weather continued to be mild right up until the last week when it became colder with frosts and light snow falls. The following birds were present throughout the month:- Mute Swan, Hybrid Goose, Greylag Goose, Farmyard Goose, Canada Goose, Teal, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Pheasant, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Buzzard, Kestrel, Moorhen, Coot, Lapwing, Black Headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Stock Dove, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Little Owl, Tawny Owl, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Raven, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Wren, Starling, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Fieldfare, Redwing, Robin, Dunnock, Pied Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Linnet, Reed Bunting, Tree Sparrow. Counts extracted from Diary, Staffs Birders and Personal counts. Waders:- Lapwing. Present throughout the month with counts of 91 on the 17th and high counts of 203 on the 3rd, 252 on the 7th and 720 on the 27th. Oystercatcher. A single bird seen on the early dates of the 9th and the10th. Common Snipe. Only one record of a bird present throughout the month with 8 reported on the 27th. Ruff. 3 birds on the 1st. Gulls and Terns Common Gull. A good record of 12 on the 10th, 2 on the 13th and a single bird on the 17th. Black Headed Gull. Present throughout the month in good numbers with only the WeBS count of 134 on the 17th. Lesser Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month in fairly small numbers with a good count of 50 on the 3rd and a WeBS count on the 17th of 6 birds. Herring Gull. One record of 6 birds on the 10th Yellow-legged Gull. Just three counts of 3 birds on the 3rd, 5 on the 6th and a single bird on the 28th. Caspian Gull. Single birds reported on the 3rd, 10th and the 28th. Great Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 3 on the 27th. Ducks, Geese, Swans, Grebes, Herons, etc Mute Swan. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 4 on the 7th, 10th and the 17th. Barnacle Goose. Single birds on the 17th and 24th and 13 on the 31st. Canada Goose. Blithfield Bird Report – January 2015

January 2015. The weather continued to be mild right up until the last week when it became colder with frosts and

light snow falls.

The following birds were present throughout the month:-

Mute Swan, Hybrid Goose, Greylag Goose, Farmyard Goose, Canada Goose, Teal, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Pheasant,

Cormorant, Grey Heron, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Buzzard, Kestrel, Moorhen, Coot, Lapwing, Black Headed

Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Stock Dove, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Little Owl, Tawny

Owl, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Raven, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper,

Wren, Starling, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Fieldfare, Redwing, Robin, Dunnock, Pied Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, Chaffinch,

Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Linnet, Reed Bunting, Tree Sparrow.

Waders:-

Lapwing. Present throughout the month with counts of 91 on the 17th and high counts of 203 on the 3rd, 252 on the 7th and 720 on the 27th.

Oystercatcher. A single bird seen on the early dates of the 9th and the10th.

Common Snipe. Only one record of a bird present throughout the month with 8 reported on the 27th.

Ruff. 3 birds on the 1st.

Gulls and Terns

Common Gull. A good record of 12 on the 10th, 2 on the 13th and a single bird on the 17th.

Black Headed Gull. Present throughout the month in good numbers with only the WeBS count of 134 on the 17th.

Lesser Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month in fairly small numbers with a good count of 50 on the 3rd

and a WeBS count on the 17th of 6 birds.

Herring Gull. One record of 6 birds on the 10th

Yellow-legged Gull. Just three counts of 3 birds on the 3rd, 5 on the 6th and a single bird on the 28th.

Caspian Gull. Single birds reported on the 3rd, 10th and the 28th.

Great Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 3 on the 27th.

Ducks, Geese, Swans, Grebes, Herons, etc

Mute Swan. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 4 on the 7th, 10th and the 17th.

Barnacle Goose. Single birds on the 17th and 24th and 13 on the 31st.

Canada Goose. Present throughout the month in high numbers with 350 on the 7th, 410 on the 14th and a high WeBS count of 592 on the 17th.

Egyptian Goose. 14 birds put in a brief appearance on the 13th.

Hybrid Canada/ Domestic. A single bird on the 17th.

Greylag Goose. . Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 32 birds on the 17th.

White-fronted Goose. 3 birds were present throughout the month.

Farmyard Goose. 7 birds present throughout the month.

Gadwall. A count of 4 birds on the 13th also 4 birds on the 17th.

Wigeon. Present throughout the month in good numbers with 370 on the 3rd, 426 on the 14th and 400 on the 27th.The highest counts were a WeBS of 688 birds on the 17th and 628 on the 7th.

Teal. Present throughout the month in good numbers with 300 on the 7th and a WeBS count of 900 on the 6th and also a count of 1000 plus on the 20th and 400+ on the 5th.

Mallard. Present throughout the month in good numbers with a WeBS count of 247 birds on the 17th.

Pochard. Present throughout the month with 11 birds on the 17th and 19th and 20 on the 27th.

Tufted Duck. Present in small numbers throughout the month with a maximum of 20 birds on the 27th and a WeBS count of 11 birds on the 17th.

Goldeneye. Present in good numbers at the start of the month with 67 on the 3rd and 30 on the 5th and 7th. Thereafter the highest counts were 12 on the 10th and 11 on the 17th.

Goosander. Present throughout the month with the highest counts being 51 on the 3rd, 40 on the 10th and 71 on the 19th.

Cormorant. Present throughout the month with a maximum WeBS count of 72 on the 17th.

Grey Heron. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 10 on the 13th.

Little Grebe. Present throughout the month with single records on the 4th, 9th and 13th.

Great Crested Grebe. Present throughout the month in high numbers with a WeBS count of 250 birds on the 17th and a count of 288 on the 19th which is believed to be a county record.

Coot. Present throughout the month with a Webs count of 80 birds on the 17th, 74 on the 18th and 50 on the 24th.

Moorhen. Present throughout the month with just two records of a single on the 14th and 17th.

Raptors and Owls

Buzzard. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 3 on the 19th.

Kestrel. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 2 on the 19th.

Peregrine Falcon. A regular visitor throughout the month with one seen on the 10th.

Passerines

Jay. One bird on the 13th and 2 on the 19th.

Great Spotted Woodpecker. Present throughout the month with just one record of a single on the 29th.

Green Woodpecker. Two birds recorded on the 13th and a single bird on the 14th.

Mistle Thrush. A single bird seen on the 19th and 2 on the 13th.

Fieldfare. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 85 on the 8th.

Redwing. Present throughout the month with counts of 10 on the 14th and 26th.

Nuthatch. Present throughout the month on the feeders with a single bird recorded on four occasions.

Marsh Tit. A single bird seen on the 19th.

Siskin, Goldfinch, Redpoll and Meadow Pipit were recorded as being present on the 20th with no counts given.

Golden Plover. 100 recorded on the 2nd.

Oystercatcher. Single bird seen on the 10th, 14th and 28th and 5 on the 18th.

Common Snipe. 21 recorded on the 8th.

Gulls and Terns

Common Gull. 4 on the 8th and 8 on the 14th.

Black Headed Gull. Present throughout the month with a WeBs count of 115 on the 8th/9th.

Mediterranean Gull. Single birds on the 11th, 14th and 21st.

Lesser Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month in fairly small numbers with a WeBS count of 4 on the

8th/9th of the month.

Yellow-legged Gull. Just two counts of 1 bird on the 9th and 3 on the 22nd.

Caspian Gull. 2 birds on the 2nd and also on the 22nd.

Canada Goose. Present throughout the month in high numbers with a maximum count of 554 birds on the 9th and 500+on the 3rd.

Snow Goose. A blue phase bird recorded on the 9th and the 14th.

Hybrid Canada/ Greylag Goose. A single bird on the 9th.

Greylag Goose. . Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 151 birds on the 9th and a maximum of 200 on the 2nd.

White-fronted Goose. 3 birds were present up until the 15th of the month.

Farmyard Goose. 7 birds present throughout the month.

Wigeon. Present throughout the month in high numbers with 500 on the 2nd, 400 on the 3rd, 301 on the 12th and 385 on the 14th.The highest count was a WeBS of 748 birds on the 9th.

Teal. Present throughout the month in good numbers with 100 on the 2nd, 175 on the 3rd and a WeBS count of 89 on the 9th.

Mallard. Present throughout the month in good numbers with a WeBS count of 226 birds on the 9th.

Shoveler. 14 on the 2nd and 9 on the 4th.

Shelduck. 2 seen on the 9th.

Pochard. Present throughout the month in small numbers with 11 birds on the 12th and 24 on the 9th.

Tufted Duck. Present in small numbers throughout the month with a maximum of 32 birds on the 2nd and 32 birds on the 23rd.

Scaup. 2 birds on the 20th.

Goldeneye. Present in small numbers throughout the month with a maximum of 7 on the 11th.

Goosander. Present throughout the month with the highest counts being 17 on the 14th.

Cormorant. Present throughout the month with a very high counts of 135 on the 9th and 120 on the 14th.

Grey Heron. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 6 on the 9th.

Little Grebe. Present throughout the month with a single record of 1 on the 14th.

Great Crested Grebe. Present throughout the month in high numbers with a count of 418 birds on the 9th which is believed to be a county record also 400 on the 9th and 389 on the 2nd.

Coot. Present throughout the month with a Webs count of 279 birds on the 9th.

Moorhen. Present throughout the month with just a single records of 1 bird on the 9th.

Raptors and Owls

Buzzard. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 2 on the 9th.

Sparrowhawk. A single bird recorded on 4 occasions during the early part of the month.

March 2015. The weather was mixed with some early morning frosts with average rainfall and temperatures. With

only slight falling water levels there were few records of waders.

The following birds were present throughout the month:-

Mute Swan, Hybrid Goose, Greylag Goose, Farmyard Goose, Canada Goose, Teal, Mallard, Wigeon, Tufted Duck,

Pheasant, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Buzzard, Kestrel, Moorhen, Coot, Lapwing,

Oystercatcher, Black Headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Stock Dove, Wood Pigeon,

Collared Dove, Little Owl, Tawny Owl, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Raven, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Great Spotted

Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Wren, Starling, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Robin, Dunnock, Pied

Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Reed Bunting, Tree Sparrow.

Common Snipe. A high WeBS count of 40 on the 7th.

Black Headed Gull. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 226 on the 7th. There was also a count of

60 on the 10th.

Lesser Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month in fairly small numbers with a WeBS count of 4 on the 7th

of the month and 4 on the 10th and 23rd.

Herring Gull. 4 were seen on the 7th and 2 on the 10th.

Yellow-legged Gull. Just three records of 2 birds on the 3rd and singles on the 10th and 23rd.

Caspian Gull. 3 birds were seen on the on the 3rd with singles on the 7th and 12th.

Great Black-backed Gull. At least one bird present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 1 on the 7th.

Ducks, Geese, Swans, Grebes, Herons, etc.

Mute Swan. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 4 on the 30th.

Black Swan. A pair were seen on the 19th and also the 30th.

Canada Goose. Present throughout the month in high numbers with a maximum count of 110 birds on the 7th.

Greylag Goose. . Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 15 birds on the 7th.

Pink- footed Goose. 4 birds were present on the 26th of the month.

Farmyard Goose. 7 birds present throughout the month.

Smew. 2 were seen on the 7th with singles on the 20th and 21st.

Gadwall. Present in small numbers throughout the month with a maximum of 8 on the 7th.

Wigeon. Present throughout the month with declining numbers at the end of the month. The highest count was a WeBS of 298 birds on the 7th.

Teal. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 40 on the 7th. 28 were seen on the 27th.

Mallard. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 79 birds on the 7th.

Shoveler. 115 were seen on the 21st and 2 on the 29th.

Shelduck. 3 seen on the 7th and 9 on the 10th. There were further records of 8 on the 21st and 4 on the 28th.

Tufted Duck. Present in small numbers throughout the month with a maximum of 50 birds on the 21st and counts of 40 birds on the 7th and the 12th.

Goldeneye. Present in small numbers throughout the month with a maximum of 9 on the 7th. 8 were also seen on the 30th.

Goosander. Present throughout the month with a highest count of 14 on the 3rd.

Cormorant. Present throughout the month with a very high count of 154 on the 7th.

Grey Heron. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 5 on the 21st.

Coot. Present throughout the month with a Webs count of 154 birds on the 7th.

Buzzard. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 4 on the 10th.

Sparrowhawk. 2 were seen on the 3rd and singles on the 7th and 23rd.

Passerines

Green Woodpecker. One birds recorded on the 7th.

Fieldfare. 60 recorded on the 3rd and 14 on the 23rd.

Redwing. Approximately 200 on the 23rd.

Nuthatch. Present throughout the month on the feeders with a maximum of 3 birds on the 7th.

Chiffchaff. First record on the 21st then seen fairly regularly thereafter with a maximum of 3 on the 30th.

Stonechat. One seen on the 7th.

Wheatear. First seen on the 20th then single birds seen fairly regularly thereafter.

Meadow Pipit. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 40 birds on the 9th.

Reed Bunting. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 2 birds on the 18th.

April 2015. The weather was dry with low rainfall and above average temperatures .Water levels continued to

remain fairly high but began to fall towards the end of the month.

The following birds were present throughout the month:-

Shoveler, Tufted Duck, Goosander, Pheasant, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Buzzard,

Kestrel, Moorhen, Coot, Lapwing, Common Snipe, Oystercatcher, Black Headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great

Black-backed Gull, Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Little Owl, Tawny Owl, Jackdaw, Jay, Carrion Crow,

Raven, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper , Wren, Starling, Blackbird,

Dunlin. Present in small numbers from mid-month with a maximum of 10 on the 29th with 2 0n the 29th still

Common Sandpiper .Passage was reported regularly from the 9th onwards with a maximum of 9 on the 28th.

Greenshank. A single bird was seen on the 21st and 23rd.

Green Sandpiper. A single bird was seen on the 20th.

Curlew Singles were reported on the 9th, 28th and 29th

Whimbrel. A series of records commenced on the 15th. Then 4 on the 16th, with subsequent reports on 2nd, 26th 28th and 30th

Black-tailed Godwit 5 on the 15th

Greenshank A single bird on the 21st and again on the 23rd

Gulls and Terns

Common Gull. A single bird was recorded on the 29th.

Black Headed Gull Present throughout the month but in diminishing numbers.

Lesser Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month in fairly small numbers with a maximum of 11 on the 29th

Herring Gull. 3 records of a single bird which appeared to be injured on the 14th, 18th and 25th.

Great Black-backed Gull. At least one bird present throughout the month with one record of 2 on the 30th.

Arctic Tern. A single bird was reported on the 11th and then 4 on the 26th and 28th.

Common Tern. The first record was of 4 birds on the 23rd building up to a maximum of 25 on the 28th.

Whiskered Tern? A possible was recorded on the 25th.

Ducks, Geese, Swans, Grebes, Herons, etc.

Mute Swan. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 6 on the 18th and an occupied nest on the 28th.

Black Swan. A pair was seen fairly regularly throughout the month.

Brent Goose. A single bird was seen on the 15th

Canada goose. Present throughout the month with only one count of 6 on the 18th.

Greylag Goose. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 9 birds on the 18th and a pair with 5 goslings on the 29th.

Farmyard Goose. 7 birds present throughout the month.

Gadwall. Present in small numbers throughout the month with a maximum of 6 on the 18th.

Wigeon. The last record was on the 6th of the month when 12 birds were counted.

Teal. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 40 on the 7th. 28 were seen on the 27th.

Mallard. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 49 birds on the 18th and a brood of 9 ducklings on the 25th.

Shoveler. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 10 on the 25th.

Shelduck. Present throughout the month in increasing numbers with a very high counts of 30 on the 25th and 24 on the 28th.

Common Scoter. A single bird was recorded on the 15th.

Tufted Duck. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 61 birds on the 18th.

Goldeneye. Up to 6 birds were present for the first half of the month with a further record of a late bird on the 29th.

Goosander. Present throughout the month with highest counts of 12 on the 14th, 15th and 18th.On the 28th a female was seen with at least 4 chicks.

Cormorant. Present throughout the month with a highest count of 30 on the 9th.

Grey Heron. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 13 on the 2nd.

Little Grebe. 4 counted on the 18th.

Great Crested Grebe. Present throughout the month with a highest count of 73 birds on the 18th.

Coot. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 57 birds on the 18th. There were two occupied nests on the 28th.

Raptors and Owls

Buzzard. Present throughout the month with up to 2 birds seen fairly regularly.

Osprey. A single bird recorded on 4 dates between the 2nd and the 12th.

Sparrowhawk. 3 were seen on the 5th and a single bird on the 2nd.

Kestrel. Present throughout the month with 2 recorded on the 14th.

Passerines

Stock Dove. 2 birds recorded on the 14th and an occupied nest on the 28th.

Great-spotted Woodpecker. Present throughout the month with 2 birds recorded on the 5th and the 9th.

Kingfisher. Single birds recorded on the 3rd and 30th.

Raven. 2 birds recorded on the 2nd.

Fieldfare. 21 recorded on the 14th with at least 9 remaining on the following day.

Mistle Thrush. A single bird recorded on the 6th and 2 on the 29th.

Song Thrush. Two birds were feeding a recently fledged youngster on the 28th.

Blackbird. A parent was feeding a fledgling on the 28th.

Nuthatch. Present throughout the month on the feeders with a maximum of 4 birds on the 5th.

Treecreeper. A pair was seen on the 3rd.

Chiffchaff. Present throughout the month with a highest count of 8 on the 5th.6 were still singing on the 14th

Willow Warbler. The first report was on the 5th with a maximum of 9 singing birds on the 14th.

Blackcap. The first report was on the 5th with up to 4 singing males throughout the rest of the month.

Garden Warbler. 3 birds were reported on the 28th and the 30th.

Yellow Wagtail. Reported from the 10th when 3 were reported and then throughout the month with a maximum of

6 birds on the 28th.

Pied Wagtail / White Wagtail Pied Wagtails were present throughout the month with some signs of breeding

activity 7 White Wagtails were found on the 17th .Smaller numbers were seen on most days until a maximum of 8

on the 29th. 6 remained on the 30th.

Reed Bunting. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 4 birds on the 2nd.

Linnet Present throughout the month with a maximum of 30 birds on the 2nd.

Ringed Plover. Up to 3 birds recorded on a number of days throughout the month.

Black Headed Gull Present throughout the month with a maximum of 20 on the 21st.

Lesser Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month with a build-up of numbers in the latter half of the month

with a high maximum count of 205 birds on the 30th.

Yellow-legged Gull. Recorded on 4 days with a maximum of 3 birds on the 16th and the 30th.

Great Black-backed Gull. One record of a single bird on the 16th.

Arctic Tern. Up to 3 birds recorded on 5 occasions with the last record being on the 16th.

Common Tern. Up to 30 birds present for most of the month with a maximum count of 43 birds on the 9th.

Mute Swan. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 23 on the 31st and an occupied nest on the 9th.

Black Swan. A pair was seen fairly regularly throughout the month.

Canada Goose. Present throughout the month with only one count of 5 on the 16th.

Greylag Goose. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 24 birds on the 16th and a pair with 5 goslings on the 30th.

Farmyard Goose. 7 birds present throughout the month.

Gadwall. Present in small numbers throughout the month with a maximum of 9 on the 16th.

Teal. Only 2 records of 8 birds on the 13th and 1 on the 16th.

Mallard. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 317 birds on the 16th at least 5 broods of ducklings.

Shoveler. Recorded on 4 occasions during the month with a maximum of 4 on the 16th.

Shelduck. Present throughout the month in increasing numbers with a very high counts of 43 on the 16th and two other counts of 30 and over on the 13th and the 30th . At least 2 broods of ducklings were recorded.

Tufted Duck. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 78 birds on the 16th.

Goosander. There were only four records of single birds. On the 13th a female was seen with at least 9 ducklings.

Cormorant. Present throughout the month with a highest count of 18 on the 16th.

Golden Plover. Just one bird reported on the 9th.

Oystercatcher. Few counts during the month with a maximum of 4 birds on the 1st and no counts after the 18th.

Red Knot. A single bird reported on the 31st.

Sanderling. Just 2 records of singles on the 12th and 31st.

Little Stint. A single bird reported on the 3rd and the 12th and 2 birds from the 23rd to the 26th.

Dunlin. Small numbers present throughout the month with a maximum count of 16 birds on the 15th.

Goldfinch. A flock of 75 birds feeding on thistles were recorded on the 18th.

September 2015. Rainfall was well below average and water levels continued to fall. The month ended with an

Indian summer in the last two weeks. The long staying Common Crane which first arrived on the 9th of August took

up residence in Blythe Bay and was present throughout the whole month.

Kestrel. Present throughout the month with up to 1 bird recorded on a number of days and 2 birds on the 22nd.

Passerines

Raven. Present throughout the month with just one record of a single bird on the 2nd.

Jay. A bird recorded on the 11th and the 22nd.

Great Spotted Woodpecker. 1 bird seen on the 11th.

Skylark. 14 birds recorded on the 17th.

Fieldfare. 120 recorded on the 30th.

Redwing. 50 recorded on the 19th.

Willow Warbler. One record of a bird on the 2nd.

Grey Wagtail. A bird seen on the 1st and 2 on the 2nd.

Pied Wagtail. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 50 birds on the 1st.

Meadow Pipit. Present throughout the month with just two records of 20 on the 9th and 10 on the 30th.

Rock Pipit. A single bird recorded on the 13th of the month.

Water Pipit. A bird recorded on the 25th.

Goldfinch. Present throughout the month with a flock of 40 plus birds on the 9th.

Brambling. 2 birds recorded on the 25th.

Linnet. Present in good numbers with counts of 207 on the 1st, 200 on the 13th and 280 on the 15th and 17th.

Siskin. 5 birds recorded on the 30th.

Blithfield Bird Report - November 2015

November 2015. Rainfall was average but temperatures continued to be above average with very little frost. The

water levels started to rise towards the end of the month from the very low levels of the past few months.

The following birds were present throughout the month:-

Cormorant, Grey Heron, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Buzzard, Kestrel, Moorhen, Coot, Lapwing, Black

Headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Stock Dove, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Little Owl,

Tawny Owl, Jackdaw, Jay, Carrion Crow, Raven, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch,

Treecreeper, Wren, Starling, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Robin, Dunnock, Pied Wagtail, Chaffinch,

Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Reed Bunting, Linnet, Tree Sparrow.

Waders:-

Lapwing. Present throughout the month in good numbers with highest counts of 563 on the 14th 230 on the 5th and 270 on the 10th.

Golden Plover. Recorded on a number of occasions in small numbers throughout the month but with good counts of 150 on the 4th and 230 on the 5th.

Oystercatcher. A single bird recorded on a number of occasions throughout the month.

Dunlin. Up to 3 present throughout most of the month.

Ruff. Just three counts of 4 birds on the 24th and the 25th and 9 on the 28th.

Woodcock. A single bird recorded on the 12th.

Black-tailed Godwit. A single bird recorded on the 11th.

Gulls and Terns

Black Headed Gull Present throughout the month with a maximum WeBS count of 298 birds on the 14th.

Common Gull. Ones and twos seen on a few occasions with a maximum of 3 on the 11th.

Lesser Black-backed Gull. Present throughout the month with very high numbers in the roost on a number of

occasions with 1000 on the 11th and on the 12th.

Yellow-legged Gull. Up to 3 birds seen on a number of occasions throughout the month.

Great Black-backed Gull. Small counts on a number of occasions with a maximum WeBS count of 4 birds on the 14th.

Ducks, Geese, Swans, Grebes, Herons, etc.

Mute Swan. Unusually just two records of a single bird on the 10th and the 14th.

Canada Goose. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 347 on the 14th.

Barnacle Goose. Just three records of a single bird on the 11th the 14th and the 16th.

Brent Goose . A single bird on the 6th and the 11th.

Greylag Goose. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 466 birds on the 14th.

Farmyard Goose. 7 birds present throughout the month.

Teal. Present throughout the month in high numbers with 529 on the 5th and a WeBS count of 507 birds on the 14th.

Gadwall. 2 birds counted on 5 occasions throughout the month.

Mallard. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 459 birds on the 14th.

Mandarin Duck. A count of 4 birds on the 31st.

Shoveler. Higher than usual counts with a WeBS count of 55 birds on the 14th, 73 birds on the 5th and 76 on the 11th and the 12th.

Shelduck. At least one bird present throughout the month with highest counts of 3 on the 12th and the 26th.

Wigeon. Present throughout the month with good counts of 181 on the 10th and 276 on the 14th.

Tufted Duck. Lower than normal numbers for the time of the year with 14 on the 5th and 10th and 15 on the 14th 24th and the 29th with a maximum of 23 on the 27th.

Pochard. Small counts on a number of occasions throughout the month with a maximum of 12 on the 28th.

Goldeneye. Present throughout the month in small numbers with a maximum of 17 birds on the 23rd.

Goosander. Present throughout the month in small numbers with a maximum of 39 birds on the 24th and the 25th.

Cormorant. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of 40 birds on the 14th.

Grey Heron. Present throughout the month with maximum count of 12 on the 5th.

Little Grebe. Present throughout the month with a single bird recorded on a number of days and 3 birds on the 24th.

Great Crested Grebe. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 120 birds on the 29th.

Coot. Present throughout the month with a WeBS count of only 8 birds on the 14th.

Moorhen. Just one count of a single bird on the 5th.

Raptors and Owls

Buzzard. Present throughout the month with a maximum of 2 birds on the 26th.

Raven. Present throughout the month with a count of 2 birds on the 25th.

Green Woodpecker. 1 bird seen on the 10th.

Fieldfare. 40 recorded on the 28th.

Pied Wagtail. Present throughout the month with a maximum count of 20 birds on the 11th.

Counts of 350 on the 4th and 500 on the 31st.

Herring Gull. Recorded in small numbers on a number of occasions with a maximum of 10 on the 31st.

Caspian Gull. Recorded on 8 days in the month with a maximum of 3 birds on the 9th.

Yellow-legged Gull. Recorded on 11 occasions in the month with maximum counts of 4 birds on the 4th and the 5th

and 6 on the 20th of the month.

Great Black-backed Gull. Small counts on a number of occasions with a maximum WeBS count of 3 birds on the 13th.

Mute Swan. Three records of a 2 birds on the 9th, 13th and the 14th and 1 bird on the 16th.

Teal. Present throughout the month in high numbers with 800 on the 5th and 865 on the 9th a WeBS count of 991 birds on the 13th.

Gadwall. Counts on 5 occasions throughout the month with a maximum of 8 birds on the 13th.

Mallard. Present throughout the month with 400 plus on the 5th a WeBS count of 572 birds on the 13th.

Mandarin Duck. A count of 4 birds on the 1st.

Pintail. A count of 2 birds on the 20th.

Shoveler. Maximum counts of 6 birds on the 1st and the 31st.

Shelduck. One bird present up until the 9th of the month.

Wigeon. Present throughout the month with over 400 birds counted on three occasions including a maximum of 474 birds on the 13th.

Tufted Duck. Lower than normal numbers for the time of the year with 15 on the 9th and 10th and 22 on the 13th and 9 on the 31st.
