A Comprehensive BLI Laboratory Evaluation MARCH 2012

An entry-level business inkjet all-in-one targeted to small work-groups and SMBs, the Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000 demonstrated flawless reliability and provided fast speeds in many of BLI’s produc-tivity tests. First-print times using the host-based driver are among the fastest for models in this class. When tested with Lexmark’s Uni-versal Print Driver, which simplifies driver deployment across a fleet of devices, the unit delivered competitive speeds in BLI’s real-world job stream test. Scanning to an e-mail address or a network folder is easy, thanks in part to the ability to create scan profiles at the PC that can be accessed at the control panel. Easy to use for walk-up functions via a clean, well-laid-out control panel design and intuitive menu system, the unit allows users to scan to/print from a USB stick and various memory cards. Users are kept well informed of device status via the Status Messenger, while administrators can take ad-vantage of the robust fleet management capabilities of Markvision Enterprise. A competitive purchase price and a cost per page, com-bined with its strong feature set and performance, make it a very good value for low volume environments. BLI highly recommends the Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000 for environments with monthly volumes of 1,250 impressions.

aDMinisTRaTiVe uTiLiTies VERY GOOD

• The embedded web server is similar to that of Lexmark’s laser devices, thus reducing the learning curve.

Administrators can view and modify settings via the embedded web server.

• The unit is compatible with Markvision Enterprise (MVE), which offers very good manage-ment of mixed fleets of devices on the network. BLI technicians found installation and setup simple, while the program’s novel yet intuitive web search paradigm for grouping devices makes the utility one of the easiest to use of those tested to date. In addition, the unique roles-based approach allows IT personnel to easily drill down to the data and tasks they need.

The Printer Setup Utility lets users configure fax settings and reports and enter contacts into a directory.

Lexmark Printer Home lets users access additional software, including the Status Messenger and Status Monitor Center, as well as online tools and printable projects.

• The status utility provides pop-up messages and icon alerts for a variety of warning conditions and errors, including misfeeds, ink low or when a drawer is out of paper. On previously tested Lexmark devices, a print status bar that indicates job status is pro-vided when a job is sent; that functionality is lacking here.

The Status Messenger provides pop-up messages for errors and warnings.

Users can select the type of errors conditions of which they’ll be notified via the Status Messenger Settings screen.

The Status Monitor Center provides ink status and a link to reorder ink.

Administrators can configure email alerts for two lists of users to notify them of various warnings and errors.

All users can view ink status (color-coded gauges) and paper status (OK or Empty) by accessing the embedded Web utility.

ease OF neTWORk seTup VERY GOOD

• Physical setup is straightforward. Users unpack the unit and remove shipping materi-als. A video graphic on the display shows users how to install the cartridges. It takes 10 clicks to install the host-based driver and another 10 for the included software (scan, fax, OCR and feedback utilities, as well as the user guide). The driver installation rou-tine is automated. The port is automatically created, though no utility is offered for the simultaneous downloading of the driver to multiple workstations. The Universal Driver requires 13 clicks to install. Using the Wireless Setup Utility, users can easily connect to the device in nine steps. To simplify setup, the utility instructs users to connect via USB cable and provides guidance at each step while settings are configured, allowing users to then unplug the cable and print over the wireless connection.

During the initial setup of the software, users can require a PIN to be entered when scanning to PC over the network. This feature, which we’ve not seen on competitive units, offers an added level of control over scanned documents.

The Universal PCL driver allows configuration over the network or via USB. The Travel Print option is handy for mobile users, who can discover available printers when printing.

The Universal driver automatically discovers compatible Lexmark printers on the network.

pRinT DRiVeRs VERY GOOD

• The unit includes a host-based driver that supports various Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as Linux. The Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000 is also one of the few inkjet devices available that is compatible with a universal print driver, making it that much easier to install and manage on the network. The drivers are graphical, and all settings required for a typical print job can be accessed from the main screen. When collate is selected from the print screen within an application, file size doesn’t increase from one set when printing multiple collated sets.

The Layout tab of the host-based driver (pictured here) provides a summary of settings in the right-hand pane, and allows users to save and access settings for future use. The Universal PCL driver is nearly identical to the host-based, which reduces the learning curve for users who switch between them.

• No problems were experienced with any of the files used in the applications compatibil-ity tests. Units are tested for compatibility on a Windows 2000 platform with Microsoft Word 2000, PowerPoint 2000 and Excel 2000, as well as Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Pho-toshop 6.0 and Acrobat 8.0, using 25 application test files that contain text, graphics, halftone images, tables, etc. that enable BLI technicians to evaluate memory usage, file processing, font rendering and grayscale capability.

scan FuncTiOns VERY GOOD

• BLI technicians found the process of scanning a file to e-mail to be very simple. Docu-ments can be scanned in color and black, in JPEG and PDF formats at 75, 150, 300 and 600 dpi, or the enhanced resolution of 1200 x 4800 dpi. Users can scan to a USB stick or a memory card, otherwise the file will be sent as an attachment to the PC that’s controlling the unit. Legal-size scanning from the document feeder and TWAIN scanning are supported. Files can be e-mailed to multiple addresses in one session.

• Scan speeds for single sided originals are faster than average in black and color modes compared to inkjets tested to date.

E-mail addresses can also be managed via the embedded web server.

Users can create scan profiles via the embedded web server, allowing them to preconfigure all settings at a PC.

• Business graphics output had average consistency of solids, sharpness of fine detail, production of pastel shades, and background reproduction, though colors in charts and graphs were overly bright. Photographic images had average smoothness and com-petitive sharpness of fine detail, with an average halftone range and slightly yellowish flesh tones. In black mode, characters were dark and had some breakup, with average sharpness and competitive smoothness of curves/serifs. While closely spaced fine lines blended together, consistency of line thickness was average, and circles and diagonal lines showed some evidence of breakup and stair-stepping, respectively. No overspray was noticed around text and line art. Grayscale was visible over a broad range with dis-tinct separation between most levels; halftone coverage was smooth, with no banding. Solids were dark and exhibited some mottling.

• Waterfastness of black ink is better than average for legal-size inkjet models in this class tested to date. Ink doesn’t smear at all when two types of highlighters are applied.

Comments: Color print quality is tested using a color test target with print samples taken at five evenly spaced intervals throughout the test period. Test targets are read using an X-Rite Eye-One/iO Color Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. The unit employs an internal automatic calibration process.

This test measures the amount of colorant transferred from a printed to an unprinted area when briefly contacted by two types of highlighters. Density readings are taken for each highlighter before and after vertically crossing five printed parallel horizontal bars to determine the amount of black ink transferred. The sample is allowed to dry one hour before the test is performed. One sample is tested at default quality.

• Running speed when printing BLI’s job stream, which simulates typical traffic in a work-group, in color and black modes is faster than average when using the host-based driver. When using the universal PCL driver, black running speed is competitive, while color speed is slightly below average. While running speed when printing sets in black simplex mode is faster than average, that in color simplex and both duplex modes is competitive.

BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook e-mail messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the device as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device.

The control panel consists of a graphical LCD display and 24 hard keys, as well as navigation arrows. BLI technicians found navigation of the menus to be intuitive. Users can press the color or black hard key to select the mode for copy and scan before pressing the start key.

• One-touch shortcuts for commonly performed tasks (customizable copy, scan to email and scan to network) reduce the number of steps required for programming settings.

• Adjusting drawers and loading paper are easy. The length guide slides while those for width move in sync once the tab on the right one has been pressed. Users need only pull

out the tray and insert media. When paper is loaded a confirm paper size/type screen automatically appears.

• Misfeeds can be accessed through three areas, including in the document feeder. Users are guided through the process of clearing a jam via a graphic depiction of the unit and text instructions on the display. Consumables don’t have to be removed.

• Replacing cartridges is clean and straightforward. Users open the ink cartridge door on the right front of the device, press the color-coded button to eject the spent cartridge and can then slide the new one into place. The slots are color-coded. The display offers animated instructions on how to replace cartridges as soon as the door is opened.

• When more than one copy is required, all pages must be scanned before they can be output. By default, collate is disabled.

FeaTuRe seT VERY GOOD

• Standard and maximum paper capacities, at 300 and 850 sheets, respectively, are among the highest for competitive models. Non-upgradeable memory capacity of 256 MB is among the highest for comparable inkjet all-in-ones. The unit offers a standard ADF with a capacity of 50 sheets, which is above average for competitive models. Stan-dard automatic duplexing in print and copy modes is supported.

• Users can scan to/print from a USB key and various memory cards, including SD, xD and MMC. Wireless connectivity is standard. Noteworthy copy features include ID Copy (to copy two sides of a card and output them on a single side of one sheet of paper), overlay and background removal.

Test Environment: This product was tested in BLI’s 10,000-square-foot U.S. test lab, in an environment monitored by an Extech RH S20 Digital RH/Temperature Recorder and Honeywell Model 61 Seven-Day Temperature/Relative Humidity Chart Recorder. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from impacting equipment under test.

Test Equipment: BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2003 servers, Windows XP workstations, 10/100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.

Test Duration: Products are tested for two months, a portion of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run at half of its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly volume, with varying daily test volumes designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour workday. This variable schedule includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day.

Tested Configuration: Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000 base unit.

Test Procedures: The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, which include a BLI-developed variation of ASTM’s 1318-90 Test Method for Determination of Productivity using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation under a Graphiclite D5000 Standard Viewer, color print quality is tested using a color test target, which is read using the X-Rite Eye-One/iO Color Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. In addition, density of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 500 Series Densitometer. Georgia-Pacific Spectrum Multi-Use 20-lb. bond is used in the tests, 10 percent of which is recycled paper containing 30 percent post-consumer content. Image quality is tested using Georgia-Pacific Printing Paper (96 brightness, 22-lb. bond).
