Fr. Steve

Once upon a mountain top, three little trees stood and dreamed of what they wanted to become when they grew up. The first little tree looked up at the stars and said: "I want to hold treasure. I want to be covered with gold and filled with precious stones. I'll be

the most beautiful treasure chest in the world!" The second little tree looked out at the small stream trickling by on its way to the ocean. "I want to be traveling mighty waters and carrying pow-erful kings. I'll be the strongest ship in the world!" The third little tree looked down into the valley below where busy men and women worked in a busy town. "I don't want to leave the moun-tain top at all. I want to grow so tall that when people stop to look at me, they'll raise their eyes to heaven and think of God. I will be the tallest tree in the world." Years passed and the little trees grew tall. One day three woodcutters climbed the mountain. The first woodcutter looked at the first tree and said, "This tree is beautiful. It is perfect for me." With a swoop of his shining ax, the first tree fell. "Now I shall be made into a beautiful chest, I shall hold wonderful treasure!" the first tree said. The second woodcutter looked at the second tree and said, "This tree is strong. It is perfect for me." With a swoop of his shining ax, the second tree fell. "Now I shall sail mighty waters!" thought the second tree. "I shall be a strong ship for mighty kings!" The third tree felt her heart sink when the last woodcutter looked her way. She stood straight and tall and pointed bravely to heaven. But the woodcutter nev-er even looked up. "Any kind of tree will do for me." He mut-tered. With a swoop of his shining ax the third tree fell. The first tree rejoiced when the woodcutter brought her to a carpenter's shop. But the carpenter fashioned the tree into a feed box for animals. The once beautiful tree was not covered with gold, nor with treasure. She was coated with sawdust and filled with hay for hungry farm animals. The second tree smiled when the woodcutter took her to a shipyard, but no mighty ship was made that day. Instead, the once strong tree was ham-mered and sawed into a simple fishing boat. She was too small and too weak to sail to an ocean, or even a river. Instead she was taken to a little lake. The third tree was confused when the woodcutter cut her into strong beams and left her in a lumber-yard. "What happened?" The once tall tree wondered. "All I ever wanted was to stay on the mountain top and point to God..." Many, many days and nights passed. The three trees nearly forgot their dreams. But one night, golden starlight poured over the first tree as a young woman placed her newborn baby in the feed box. "I wish I could make a cradle for him," her husband whispered. The mother squeezed his hand and smiled as the starlight shone on the smooth and the sturdy wood. "This man-ger is beautiful," she said. And suddenly the first tree knew he was holding the greatest treasure in the world. One evening a tired traveler and his friends crowded into the old fishing boat. The traveler fell asleep as the second tree qui-etly sailed out into the lake. Soon a thundering and thrashing

storm arose. The little tree shuddered. She knew she did not have the strength to carry so many passengers safely through the wind and the rain. The tired man awakened. He stood up, stretched out his hand and said, "Peace." The storm stopped as quickly as it had begun. And suddenly the second tree knew he was carrying the King of heaven and earth. One Friday morning, the third tree was startled when her beams were yanked from the forgotten woodpile. She flinched as she was carried through an angry jeering crowd. She shuddered when soldiers nailed a man's hands to her. She felt ugly and harsh and cruel. But on Sunday morning, when the sun rose and the earth trembled with joy beneath her, the third tree knew that God's love had changed everything. It had made the third tree strong. And every time people thought of the third tree, they would think of God. That was better than being the tallest tree in the world. So the next time you feel down because you didn't get what you want, just sit tight and be happy because God is thinking of something better to give you. ~unknown Today’s Gospel reminded me of this story. We each have our own ways of thinking about what we want to be or do with our lives and sometime others. Peter had his own ideas or plans for Jesus other than the one Jesus just explained. If we limit ourselves to only thinking about our own human ways and what we want out of life, we risk not seeing or realizing the awe-someness of God and His plans for us and our world. I never could have imagined I would be doing what I am as a priest and pastor when I was younger because I had my own hopes and dreams and I didn't think I had what it took to be a priest let alone lead three successful mergers in less than ten years. As I look back over the last ten years of my ministry, I realize now that trying my best to let God be in control and trust where He was leading me enabled things to happen in my life that I never thought possible. Even the times I got discouraged because God didn't respond or act in the way I wanted or ex-pected He still kept working with me. I have to admit that some of those things I would have never chosen for myself but God ‘s plans were not about me but others and I am grateful that He was persistent with me. This week, let us all pray that every individual in our parish family remembers that God is always working in our lives in ways that are beyond our human imaginings. Imagine the pos-sibilities of what could be if we can just, Let Go and Let God!”

“Sometimes we have to let our dreams go in order to allow God to bring them back to us –

in his way and his timing.” ~ Melody Carlson

DEACON TIM’S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW I am not sure where this originated, but some-one once said, “If anyone should doubt whether this is truly the land of promise, they should show up around election time.” Politicians promise all the good things they will do for us. You would never hear a politician say, like Je-

sus did in today’s gospel, “whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.” Like Peter, we prefer to hear about the peace, love, and joy that our faith brings us, and it does. But it is difficult to hear about the cross. We recently heard Jesus tell his Apostles he would suffer greatly, be killed, and on the third day rise. Jesus predicted suffering for his followers too. It is a bit of a wonder that anyone decided to follow Jesus when he spoke this way. While martyrdom continues today, for most of us, not in danger of perse-cution, carrying the cross involves our day to day effort to overcome our selfishness and to love God with our whole heart, and soul, mind and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Suffering for its own sake is never good. Tak-ing steps to alleviate it is reasonable. But there are those crosses that we must bear that are our responsibility or vocation, caring for others, the duties of parenthood, or adult children caring for aged parents. There are crosses that are part of our jobs like teachers, firemen, or service men and women. Each day before you pick up your cross, recall the love and sacrifice Jesus made for us. He will give you all the strength you need to bear your cross today. ~Deacon Mike “In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent”

St. John Paul II: The Spiritual Legacy is a wonderful EWTN documentary that is also available as an affordable DVD. I came across this DVD while visiting with a

family member and I was surprised that I never saw it before. However, I am now more than happy to spread the word about this fine DVD! EWTN's Joanna Bogle and Clare Anderson trav-el to Poland and visit numerous sites that were either important or historic in the life of Karol Jozef Wojtyla, who went on to become Pope Saint John Paul II. The DVD is only an hour long but it has many on location videos and interviews of various people from key mo-ments in Pope John Paul II's life and priestly ministry. Theater actor, playwright, philosopher, athlete, seminari-an, youth leader and priest, Karol Wojtyla did it all, and did it all very well. The fact that he lived under the dead-ly occupation of two consecutive anti-religious regimes, and still managed to move forward with his priestly min-istry, is impressive. As mentioned, all aspects of his early life and ministry as a priest, bishop, cardinal and pope are cov-ered in this DVD. This includes his support of the Soli-darity movement, despite the attempts of the Soviet gov-ernment. I proudly give this DVD Five Beards out of Five Beards. If you are a fan of St. John Paul II, you will enjoy this documentary. If you know about him, but would like to find out more and see why people like me think so much of him, this DVD would be an excellent place to start.
