Let Us Pray! O Lord, giver of life and source of freedom, I know that all I have received is from your hand. Gracious and loving God, You call us to be stewards of Your abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us. Help us to always use Your gifts wisely and teach us to share them generously. Send the Holy Spirit to work through us, bringing Your message to those we serve. May our faithful stewardship bear wit-ness to the love of Jesus Christ in our lives. We pray with grateful hearts, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Blessed Lord, accept this burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for You.

Like this candle, I am ready to be used in your service without asking why and to what purpose.

Even as this candle, I wish to stand in Your presence and to be consumed in the light and warmth of our Love.

Please hear my prayer and, if it is Your will, grant my petition.

But above all, make me loyal and faithful to You in all circumstances of my life.

Amen.

The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts?” After mate-rial needs are satisfied and, in some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multiplied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill.

“Feed them yourselves.”

Have you ever been invited to a dinner when family members unexpectedly showed up with their group of teenagers and their friends? You watch as the food being placed on the table is slowly being picked away by the hungry growing teens before anyone even sits at the table. Everyone eventually gathers around the table, quiets down and prays. Fi-nally, time to eat! Before you know it, arms are eve-rywhere, reaching and grabbing, passing and pick-ing. When it all settles, you end up with a small bit of food on your plate and, if you were lucky enough to grab one, a hot buttery crescent roll. In the end, as you slowly savor that last crumb you managed to hold on to, you think to yourself, “I’m going to have to stop at Burger King on the way home to grab a meal.” When I left the dinner that evening, I ended up passing by the Burger King not feeling hungry at all. I thought about what a wonderful dinner it was. Even though I didn’t get to eat much, I was satisfied and felt good. What filled me wasn’t the small amount of food I was lucky enough to grab. It was conversations about life, faith and hope and the memories that invoked so much love and laughter that was shared while we were all crammed around that small dinner table together. It was being in the presence of so many people who love the Lord and their faith and were willing to talk about it. I wonder if that was the feeling the people in today’s gospel had on their way home from that evening with Jesus and his disciples. He fed more than five thousand men, not to mention the additional women, and chil-dren from five loaves of bread and two fish with leftovers! The blessing of Jesus over those little provisions the disciples had provided more than enough to sat-

isfy. The miracle of Jesus offers us a glimpse of the Kingdom of Heaven that he has been teaching about in the parables the last few weeks. The miracle pro-vides us an example for Christian life and ministry. In our simple efforts to spend time with others, shar-ing what little we may think we have, with others we are offering the greatest gift, the love of Christ and can produce great and unexpected results when it comes from the heart and is placed in the service of the Kingdom of Heaven. Being in the presence of others and sharing our love for Christ helps to satisfy spiritual hunger like nothing else. Even though we may not be able to physically gather together because of the current pandemic, we can still spend time with others by making a phone call or delivering a meal to the door of a lonely neighbor or family member and chatting through the glass. Maybe we can return to the lost art of writing and mailing a small note of hope to someone in an effort to feed their spirits. Experienc-es of connecting with others to share our faith and love for the Lord can help us to understand and strengthen our connection or communion with God.

“Mmm, that was good!”

The reason so many people miss out on their blessing is because

they decide to settle on a quick microwaved dinner

rather than spending time at the feast God has for them.

DEACON TIM’S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW I guess you could say we have had a real hot spell the last few weeks. When I was a kid in the mid-west and the hot spells would come the rumors would start. “The mosquitoes are flying around with canteens. The farmers are giving their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs. A fire hydrant

was seen bribing a dog. The Baptists are starting to bap-tize by sprinkling, the Methodists are using wet wipes, the Presbyterians are giving out rainchecks and the Cath-olics are praying for the wine to change back into water.” During this time, we have heard seven parables about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus never hinted about what the temperature might be. But Jesus demonstrated many things about the kingdom. He demonstrated by casting out demons, healing the sick, raising the dead, forgiving sins and in feeding the multitude. We are told that Jesus fed the multitude of 5000 men plus women and children with five loaves and two fish. Many seem to want to doubt this miracle ever hap-pened. This mysterious feeding requires our faith to ac-cept and acknowledge this miracle. Jesus continues to feed us in a miraculous way today in the Eucharist. This miracle also requires our faith to trust and know that the true presence of Jesus exists in the Eucharist. He contin-ues to feed us with this bread of eternal life. Paul con-firms this in the second reading when he says, “nothing in all of creation will separate us from his love, the love of Christ.” This is the miracle that we accept through faith in Christ’s precious Sacrament of Eucharist which he shares with us.

This week's review is the DVD called "The Last Things: Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell. This DVD was re-leased in 2011 by Ignatius Press and it

is only 32 minutes long, but it gives simple explanations of the realities of "The Last Things". With all of the upheaval and fear in our world today, some people are either upset or afraid of their future. I always remind those that feel this way that in John 16:33, Jesus lets us know that in this world, we will have trials and sorrows. But, Jesus also reminds us that He has overcome the world. If we put our Faith and our hope in Him, our future will be secure. "The Last Things" are not talked about as much as they used to be, which is a shame. Once we fully ad-mit and realize that 1) we are definitely going to die and 2) we will be judged based upon how we live our life, we will better understand that this world and this life are only temporary. We should not be afraid of anything in this life, but should not be distracted from the main point which is "How we live our lives matter". That is what matters very much. How long is forever? The an-swer is "forever!" This DVD speaks of Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell (and also Purgatory) from a Catholic perspec-tive. The DVD has four different priests explaining the Catholic views on these subjects, and they use Bible verses Church teachings to make their point. For exam-ple, regarding Judgment, they show 2: Corinthians 5:10, and for Purgatory, they show 2: Maccabees 12:45 (which is why Luther did not want that book to be in-cluded in HIS version of the Bible). I give this short but informative DVD Five Beards out of Five Beards because of the way it easily explains "The Last Things", and also encourages us that we have time to seek God's Mercy if we think that we are currently on the wrong path.

Arm yourself with prayer rather than a sword; wear humility rather than fine clothes. —St. Dominic
