New Youth-Led Ministry! Join us!

We’ve begun a new ministry to the residents of Valley Center Nursing Home, making/collecting handwritten cards, word

search puzzle books, old CD players that work, bookmarks, and anything else that might help the 125 residents of Valley

Center Nursing Home feel loved.

To join us in our card-writing ministry, email Mary Odin at wmodin@frontier.com and she’ll mail you three blank

greeting cards with instructions. You can also participate by using your own cards from home, or by bringing blank

greeting cards to the church to donate to our growing group of card-writers. Cards and other items will be collected at the

church to be delivered together to Valley Center. Completed greeting cards with or without envelopes (unsealed, please,

so they can be matched to recipients at Valley Center) may be placed in our colorful mailbox at the church. Thank you!

GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH COALBURG FOOD PANTRY NEWS from Debbie Wright

The Food Pantry has been in more demand since COVID-19 has invaded our life.

We used to average 35 to forty families served. We are now averaging 55 to 60 and on one occasion we had 70.

We are so grateful to the members of Blessed Sacrament for their continued support of our parish and our food pantry in particular.

At this time we are working with a skeleton crew of six to eight people for safety reasons. Our food pantry is "drive up." The cars pull up, we take their information (they used to fill out forms for us) and we carry the bagged food to their vehicles. No one gets out of the vehicle.

This past week we were short staffed due to doctor's appointments. Two of our teenagers (Elise and Julianna) that attend Charleston Catholic stepped up and saved the day. They helped unload the food delivery and pack the bags for the Thursday distribution.

Our parish is an elderly one. We have been fortunate that they are loyal in sending in their weekly contributions and many are remembering the food pantry with monetary donations during this time.

Many hands make light work at Good Shepherd so that many can eat!

GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH COALBURG FOOD PANTRY NEWS

Blessed Sacrament Tithe Fund recently gave an additional $2,800 to the food pantry to purchase needed food

items – this was in place of our customary spring food drive. Due to high need in their community, we will

make an additional $3,000 donation from our Tithe Fund later this month. We are determined to support the

dedicated parishioners of Good Shepherd who want to make sure that no one in their poverty-stricken area

goes hungry!

While contributions to the Tithe Fund are always welcome, this weekend

and next weekend we encourage everyone to donate what they might

have spent on buying food items for Coalburg.

For those who come in person to Mass there will be a separate collection box in our breezeway to receive cash

or check donations. If you wish to have your cash donation recorded, please place it in any envelope with

your envelope number on the outside. Checks will automatically be recorded. You may also mail a

contribution or drop off an envelope at our south entrance.

Covenant House

2020 has been a tough one, with more plot twists than any of us could have imagined. But in spite of

everything, people of all ages and incomes are stepping up to support Covenant House in giving the

community’s most vulnerable the tools they need to lift themselves out of hunger, homelessness, and poverty.

We just kicked off our campaign on Facebook – and this year, we’re excited to share new stories from several

familiar faces. We caught up with seven past Here for Good participants who are continuing to rise to the

occasion by supporting Covenant House and our community.

They know that by giving just a little every month, they are capable of making a huge difference in someone’s

quality of life. Keep an eye out for their stories (here and on Facebook) to learn more about what they’re up to

now!

Federal Tax Credits Extended

The Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credits have been extended through December 31, 2020. Air source heat pumps and central air conditioners that are ENERGY STAR® certified and are installed in a primary residence meet the requirements for this tax credit of up to $300.

Gospel Matthew 14:13-21

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself.

The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd,

his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and

said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for

themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to

him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me,” and he ordered the crowds to

sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the

loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they

The Catholic Spirit – electronic version

The Catholic Spirit now has a weekly electronic edition sent free of charge, by e-mail to those who subscribe.

The new electronic edition was made available to also help cut the cost of printing, and is sent every Friday

morning. Many have signed up, and say they prefer this new version. Anyone can sign up for the e-list by

sending an e-mail to crowan@dwc.org with “The Catholic Spirit e-list” in the subject line. Please consider

removing your name from the print edition. This helps to make sure that your fellow Catholics around the state

who need the print edition, such as those without internet access, and the elderly, will continue to receive it.

Just note in your e-mail request for subscription that you would like to be removed from the print mailing list

and only receive by e-mail.

Those who sign up are asked to please provide the name and address to be removed and the e-mail to

send the e-version of the newspaper.

With the ultimate goal of enhancing communication while operating within a new budget to help cut costs,

The Catholic Spirit has moved from printing twice a month to once a month. All print publishing dates are on

the first Friday of each month. The Catholic Spirit monthly print version will continue to be delivered free of

charge to all Catholic households in West Virginia.

By joining the e-mail distribution list, readers will receive the weekly e-version as well as the electronic

version of the monthly print edition of The Catholic Spirit.

Pastor's Pages

Our Current Financial Status Our Pastoral Council requested that everyone have access to basic information about how our financial status

has been impacted during the pandemic. Thanks to Natalie Zellers for extracting these details.

Our regular offertory contributions in the first 6 months of 2020 were $35,000 lower than for the same

period of 2019.

Our regular operating expenses in the first 6 months of 2020 were also $26,000 lower than for the same

period of 2019.

That left a deficit of $9,000 which did not become an immediate burden because our diocese requested

funding through the federal Payroll Protection Plan for all of its parishes. From that "forgiveable loan" Blessed

Sacrament received $39,475 to use toward our staff’s salaries. Our bishop also directed our diocesan finance

office to pay all parish pastors' compensation for May and June, which saved our parish about $7,000. Our

bishop also directed the diocesan office to ship a pallet of sanitation supplies to every parish, at no cost to us.

Even before we knew we would receive the Payroll Protection funds we had made a commitment to not

terminate or lay off or furlough any of our employees. Even if working fewer hours, they all continued to

receive their regular base salary.

Many of our parishioners have elected to make donations to us through their bank’s online banking system.

(This allows bank customers to pay their bills and send other payments, like donations, without the bank

customer writing and mailing a check. Often this service is free.)

Many have also elected to mail their donations to us – often with lovely notes – thank you!

Parishioners and visitors can now make donations to our parish via text and smartphone app.

A donation form is also available on our parish website https://blessedsacramentwv.org/ (more on using this

portal on page 6 of this bulletin). Each of these options require a small fee.

In the past many parishioners chose to designate their contributions for particular programs, ministries or

needs with the understanding that such contributions would be exempt from our diocesan assessment of 9%.

As of this year, that exemption strategy has ended. All contributions made to Blessed Sacrament for any

purpose are now assessed except for direct donations to our Tithe Fund.

Of that 9% assessment, 3% is for cathedraticum, a standard tax to support diocesan central services such as

the salaries of the bishop and his staff and the operation of diocesan programs. (In most U.S. dioceses that

percentage is much larger.) The other 6% is for the Priests Health and Retirement Association – the fund that

provides health insurance coverage and retirement pensions for our diocesan priests. (In addition to our 6%

assessment each parish also pays a monthly amount per priest and we also have the annual special collection

in early Spring.)

I am much more confident now, under Bishop Brennan, that these funds are being managed responsibly – so I

have no qualms about the assessment as I did under Bishop Bransfield.
