Masses for the Week This past weekend we were able to once again gather for Masses. At 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday we had 38 participants. At 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday we had 48 participants. At 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday we had 33 participants. Obviously we had no trouble keeping our so-cial distance in a church nave that holds 700 people. It was an interesting site from the sanctuary looking out on a crowd of different and various styles of facemasks that peo-ple were wearing. I am curious (of course being a "George") to see if the facemasks become the newest form of fashion statement or the way of expressing our differing personal tastes and identities. I received no complaints after Mass about the homily being too long, but then I didn't stand in the narthex after the Mass to chat with people due to the requirements of social distancing. In general, people seemed happy to be back at church and we will see what the coming weeks bring with regard to returning to a more normal way of life and if Covid-19 flares up once we do or if it takes a vacation for the summer. For those of you who have not yet returned your pledge card for the Catholic Services Appeal we are not able to carry out the campaign as we have done in the past as at this time in the process we would have pledge cards in the pews and would be inviting you to complete one and turn it in to one of the ushers after Mass. We can't do that normal procedure this year since many of you are not in the pews to pick up the pledge cards, and we cannot have the pledge cards in the pews where they might be handled by multiple people as that would violate the guidelines for pro-tection from passing Covid-19. This year as in the past there should be a second mailing of CSA materials with a second pledge card coming from the diocesan offices to those who have not yet participated by returning their pledge card. In the past that second mailing used to take place in June or July. In the original planning for the cam-paign this year we did sign up for that second mailing. When it will happen this year I am not certain given how things have changed on the calendar due to our experience with Covid-19. The point is that there is supposed to be a second mailing again this year as in the past years to those of you who have not yet returned a pledge card and when-ever that happens you will then have a second chance to participate in this year's Catholic Services Appeal even though you haven't been able to have a second or third or fourth chance of picking up a pledge card from the pew and returning it to the parish office. Again thank you to all of you who have participated so far this year by already re-turning your pledge card to us. With regard to the violence that resulted from some of the recent protests I would suggest that we all go back and study once again the words and example of Dr. Martin Luther King from my younger days. His choice of non-violence as a method of conflict resolution was because of the knowledge that violence never brings about anything but more violence down the road somewhere at some other time. His goal was to have a colorblind society where a person would be judged on the "content of their character" and not by the color of their skin. I have been reflecting on my four years living in Belgium which was such a colorblind society never having known the scourge of slavery. Maybe our prayer should be that in this sense we might become more like the society in which I lived when I lived in color-blind Belgium.

Now that summer is here and many of you will be away on vacation, have you remembered to drop off your contribution envelopes? If not, automatic giving might be a good solution for you. You can make your weekly or monthly Parish con-tribution via an automatic deduction from your checking or savings ac-count. You can find a form in the stewardship tower in the narthex, in the Parish Office or on our website.
