Faith Breaks Down Barriers

Recently my family hosted my cousin and her two teenage children vaca-tioning from Australia. After two weeks of visiting Disneyland, Univer-sal Studio, South Coast Plaza and other tourist attractions in the area I asked the youngest girl how much she enjoyed her vacation. She told me she liked it very much, but she was ready to go home. She was homesick. She missed her dog! I was surprised that she did not miss her dad, her friends, or her grand-mother, but the dog. The reason she missed her dog was because every morning when she woke up her dog was there greeting her with its charming look. Every time she came home from school, her dog was there ready to play catch with her. Her dog did not judge her; it did not get mad or let her down. Instead her dog became her most loyal friend, and an important part of her life that could not be replaced. Even Mickey Mouse, Woody Woodpecker, Min-ions or designer jeans and shirts from South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island couldn’t substitute it. In our culture and society dogs and cats have become an important part of our life, and at times we care for them more than we care for family

compassionate and caring Lord to answer her plea positively. However, Jesus said, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs” (Mt 15:26). The woman must have been hurt very much with such a rejecting statement, but again she did not go away. In her vulnerability she ac-knowledged that she was a dog. She was not a wild or strayed dog which might be dirty, smelly, or carry rabies. She considered herself a domesticated dog. She was a pet beloved by children and their mas-ters and deserved to “eat the scraps that fall from the table of their mas-ters” (Mt 15:27). With her persistent and great faith this vulnerable and helpless woman received what she came for. With this Gospel periscope, St. Mat-thew who wrote to the Jewish com-munity of faith reminds of something. He reminds each and every one of us that through faith, Gentiles will no longer be separated from Israel. St. Paul wrote that in Christ “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is nei-ther slave nor free person, there is not male or female” (Gal 3:28). Faith in Jesus breaks down all barriers and allows all nations and peoples to come to Him.

She did so despite not having the money to pay for her own prescription drugs. We love dogs and cats and other pets, but this affection was not shared by all cultures and peo-ples. Take for example in the Gos-pel for this weekend. At first, Jesus refused to heal a Canaanite woman’s daughter because in His metaphor she was considered as one of the “dogs.” From the reading we notice that Jesus went to Tyre and Sidon, a Gentile territory. In this area a Canaanite woman, a Gentile with no name came and begged Je-sus for help. At first Jesus ignored her and refused to talk to her. When the disciples demanded that Jesus send her away because she was like a troublesome pest, Jesus said something unexpected. He told the disciples and the woman that he “was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Mt 15:24). This woman refused to accept no for an answer. In her vulnerability, she did not go away, she did not back down but came forward and did homage to Jesus. In desperation and full of hope she once again begged Jesus for mercy and help. With such scene, we would expect our

La Fe Rompe Barreras Recientemente mi familia recibió a mi prima ya sus dos hijas adolescentes de vacaciones de Australia. Después de dos semanas de visitar Disneyland, Universal Studio, South Coast Plaza y otras atracciones turísticas en la zona le pregunté a la hija menor cuánto disfrutaba de sus vacaciones. Me dijo que le gustaba mucho, pero estaba lista para volver a casa. Tenía nostalgia. ¡Extrañaba su perro! Me sorprendió que no extrañara a su papá, a sus amigos o su abuela, sino al perro. La razón por la que extrañaba a su perro era porque todas las mañanas, cuando despertaba, su perro la saludaba con su mirada encantadora. Cada vez que regresaba de la escuela, su perro quería jugar con ella. Su perro no la juzgaba y no se enojaba ni la decepcionaba. En cambio, su perro se convirtió en su amigo más leal, y una parte de su vida que no podía ser reemplazado. Incluso, Mickey Mouse, Woody Woodpecker, Minions o ropa diseñador de South Coast Plaza y Fashion Island no podía sustituirlo. En nuestra cultura y sociedad los perros y los gatos se han convertido en una parte importante de nuestras vida, ya veces nos

mismos. Por ejemplo, conocí a una persona que gasto miles de dólares a su tarjeta de crédito por las facturas médicas de su perro. Lo hizo a pesar de no tener el dinero para pagar sus propios medicamentos recetados. Nos encantan las mascotas, pero este afecto no fue compartido por todas culturas y personas. Tomemos por ejemplo el Evangelio de este fin de semana. Al principio, Jesús se negó a sanar a una hija de una mujer cananea porque en su metáfora fue considerada como uno de los "perros". De la lectura notamos que Jesús fue a Tiro y Sidón, un territorio gentil. En esta área vino una mujer cananea, un gentil sin nombre, y rogó a Jesús por ayuda. Al principio Jesús la ignoró y se negó a hablar con ella. Cuando los discípulos le exigieron que Jesús la despidiera porque era como una plaga problemática, Jesús dijo algo inesperado. El les dijo a los discípulos y a la mujer que él "fue enviado solamente a las ovejas perdidas de la casa de Israel" (Mt 15:24). Esta mujer se negó a aceptar no como respuesta. En su vulnerabilidad, ella no se fue, no retrocedió, sino que se acercó y le hizo un homenaje a Jesús. En desesperación y llena de esperanza, una vez más pidió misericordia y ayuda a

Jesús. Con tal escena, esperamos que nuestro compasivo y cariñoso Señor pueda contestar su súplica positivamente. Sin embargo, Jesús dijo, "No es correcto tomar la comida de los niños y tirarla a los perros" (Mt 15:26). La mujer debió de sufrir mucho daño con una declaración tan rechazadora, pero de nuevo no se fue. En su vulnerabilidad, reconoció que era un perro. No era un perro salvaje o desgarrado que pudiera estar sucio, maloliente o portador de rabia. Se consideraba un perro domesticado. Ella era una mascota amada por los niños y sus amos y merecía "comer los restos que caen de la mesa de sus amos" (Mt 15, 27). Con su fe persistente y grande, esta vulnerable e indefensa mujer recibió lo que buscaba. Con este periscopio evangélico, San Mateo, que escribió a la comunidad judía de fe, recuerda algo. Él nos recuerda a todos y cada uno de nosotros que por medio de la fe, los gentiles ya no estarán separados de Israel. San Pablo escribió que en Cristo "no hay judío ni griego, ni esclavo ni libre, ni varón ni mujer" (Gá. 3:28). La fe en Jesús rompe todas las barreras y permite que todas las naciones y pueblos vayan a Él.

“Đức tin phá đổ hàng rào cản”

Mới đây gia đình tôi tiếp người chị em họ và hai người con thiếu niên từ Úc đến nghỉ hè. Sau hai tuần thăm viếng Disneyland, rồi Universal Studio, South Coast Plaza, và những địa điểm du lịch nổi tiếng khác trong vùng, tôi hỏi cô con gái nhỏ tuổi rằng em có thích dịp hè này lắm không? Cô bé trả lời rằng cô rất thích, tuy nhiên...cô bé muốn về nhà lắm rồi. Cô nhớ nhà. Cô nhớ con chó của cô! Tôi ngạc nhiên khi thấy rằng cô không nhớ bố, bạn bè, hay bà nội, mà lại nhớ con chó. Những lý do mà cô nhớ con chó là vì mỗi buổi sáng khi thức dậy thì con chó ở bên chào mừng cô với ánh mắt trìu mến; mỗi lần đi học về thì chó con có mặt ở đó để chơi ú tim với cô; con chó không phê phán cô; chó con không tức giận với cô và không làm cô thất vọng. Thay vào đó, con chó trở thành người bạn trung thành và là

con tiến lên gặp Chúa và chào Chúa. Trong tuyệt vọng và tràn hi vọng lần nữa bà nài nỉ xin Chúa

Giêsu lòng thương xót và giúp đỡ. Trong hoàn cảnh đó, chúng ta mong rằng Chúa nhân từ của

Với đức tin kiên trung và mạnh mẽ như thế, người đàn bà yếu đuối và tuyệt vọng này đã nhận được điều mà bà đến kêu xin. Với cái nhìn của bài Phúc Âm này, thánh Mátthêu đã viết cho cộng đoàn người Do Thái, nhắc nhở mỗi người chúng ta rằng qua đức tin những người dân ngoại không còn bị tách biệt ra khỏi người Do Thái nữa. Thánh Phaolô đã viết rằng trong Chúa Kitô thì “không có ai là Do Thái, Hi Lạp, không còn là người nô lệ hay tự do, là người nam hay người nữ” (Galata 3:28). Đức tin trong Chúa Kitô đã phá đổ mọi hàng rào cản và cho phép mọi dân nước và con người đến với Ngài.

Trong vùng này, có một người đàn bà xứ Canaan, người ngoại không tên tuổi đến với Chúa Giêsu xin giúp đỡ. Thoạt đầu thì Chúa Giêsu coi bà như không có. Ngài từ chối nói chuyện với bà. Khi các môn đệ xin Chúa đuổi bà đi vì bà này giống như con chó làm phiền, nhưng Chúa Giêsu đã nói một điều ngoài sự tưởng tượng của chúng ta. Ngài nói với các môn đệ và người đàn bà rằng Ngài được ‘sai đến với những chiên lạc nhà Israel’ (Mt 15:24). Người đàn bà này từ chối nhận sự từ khước như câu trả lời.
