The Junior High Late Assignments Procedure is as follows:

On the day an assignment is due, teachers will collect assignments from students. Those students who do not have their assignment ready to turn in will have a one-on-one discussion with the teacher regarding why the assignment is not complete and then discuss a mutually agreed upon revised due date for submission. In D2L, teachers will record a 0% as a mark, with the comment “Not yet submitted. The reason is ______, and the new submission date is _______.”

On the revised due date, teachers will again ask for the assignment. If it is completed, they will input the comment “Assignment submitted (date)” and replace the 0% with the assigned mark once evaluated by the teacher. If it is not submitted on this revised date, students have one final opportunity to submit – date to be determined by teacher with student input. The teacher will input the reason again along with the final revised date in D2L. If this date is then not met, the informed zero mark will stand.

We wish to reinforce/instill in our students the life-skill of being proactive rather than reactive in meeting deadlines. As well, we want to reinforce to students that they must be advocates for their learning. This means that if they don’t understand the assignment that they need to ask questions of a peer/teacher/parent and that if they know they won’t meet the deadline for legitimate reasons (laziness is not one), to meet with the teacher well before the deadline, not on the morning that the assignment is due.

Students should make arrangements to meet with teachers prior to deadlines if they do not understand the assignment/work or know if they have a conflict in scheduling.

Adding a 0% on the original due date if the assignment is not turned in lets the student know what their mark will be if it is not completed. The 0% is changed once the late assignment is assessed.

If you have any questions/concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s Teacher Advisor (TA) or a member of our administrative team.

Progress Reports for this first reporting period will go home with students on Thursday, November 28th. Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences will take place on the evening of Thursday, December 5th from 3:30 – 7 p.m. and Friday, December 6th from 8:30 – 11 a.m. and 12 – 2 p.m. You can begin booking your Conferences online beginning on Friday, November 29that 8 a.m. – further details will be provided.

Make sure your children first know addition and subtraction by heart up to 100, and then multiplication and division to 12x12. It makes math way easier and less time consuming as they move on to more complicated math. It also builds confidence.

While Halloween treats may be in abundance at home, we want to remind families that we model healthy habits. Please be mindful of how many sugary treats your child brings to school and limit to one or two candy pieces.

From November to January students will get an opportunity to work with Bee-Bots and OzoBots for programming and coding activities. The Makerspace activities will be during their regular LC Library class time. Bee-Bots – This is an exciting robot designed specifically for use by young children. This colorful, easy-to-operate, and friendly little robot is a perfect tool for teaching sequencing, estimation and problem-solving.

CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT MONTHLY NEWS

ConnectionsNOVEMBER 2019

CCSD Calgary Flames FundraiserCalgary Catholic and the Calgary Flames are excited to offer students, staff, and families discounted tickets to Flames games in November, December and January, while also fundraising for their school. Last year we raised more than $7,000 for our schools and the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation. For every ticket sold, the Calgary Flames will donate $10 back to your school. Tickets can be purchased at ccsdinfo.ca/FlamesFundraiser.

Parent & Trustee Forum All parents are invited to attend the November Parent & Trustee Forums to explore educational issues impacting your child. The forum will take place on Nov. 26 at 7–9 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Centre (2120 - 16 Ave NE, Calgary). Visit ccsdinfo.ca/SchoolCouncil for more information.

Faith Day All schools and administrative offices will be closed on Friday, Nov. 1 as staff come together as a community to celebrate our annual Faith Day—an inspirational, faith-based professional development day. This year’s event is an extra special one as it is the 20th anniversary of Faith Day. We look forward to having Father Richard Leonard—an Australian priest give our keynote speech.

Catholic Education SundayNovember 3 is Catholic Education Sunday. On this day, we recognize and celebrate the wonderful work that is taking place throughout the province in our Catholic schools. Catholic Education Sunday is also an opportunity for us to share our generosity. The Calgary Catholic Education Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to enhancing educational experiences for students in the CCSD. The Foundation provides grants that support innovative programs and projects that touch the lives of students in our schools. On November 2–3, there will be a special collection at each mass throughout the Diocese, with a large portion of funds going to the Foundation. Help support quality Catholic education in our community and ensure that the needs of Catholic education are met.

Carols for ChristmasFrom Jingle Bells to Deck the Halls, follow along with the lyrics on the jumbotron and belt out the classics at the Calgary Hitmen’s Carols for Christmas; you’ll be one of thousands singing before the puck drops and throughout intermissions. Ideal for choirs, classes and school communities, this fun family event is affordable; student tickets are FREE! Additional tickets for parents, families and friends are only $12 each. Purchase tickets at ccsdinfo.ca/Carols4Christmas. For more information or help, email or call Kati Macoun at [email protected] or 403-777-3693.
