RECEIVE AND REFLECT GOD’S GRACE Sunday, September 26, 2021 – Pentecost 18

Service Order: Service of the Word, Christian Worship, page 38

A warm welcome to those visiting us this morning. Here at St. Paul we preach Christ crucified, whose suffering and death paid for our sins and earned for us the gift of everlasting life. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to speak with Pastor Goetzinger or Pastor Kock. We pray that you return to worship with us again.

INFORMATION Restrooms Speak with an usher for the location. Hearing assistance devices are available. Speak with an usher.

FOR PARENTS Changing table is located in the washroom next to the downstairs kitchen. Quiet space for children behind the glass walls at the entryway of church.

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE CHURCH silence for meditation.

Heavenly Father, remind me today in your word that I am near to you, because of Jesus. Even though you are perfect and holy, and I’m not, I can now approach your throne in certainty and peace, knowing I’m beloved in your sight. Today, I draw all the more near to you through your word and promises. In my Saviour’s name I pray, Amen.

OPENING HYMN What Is the World to Me ————————————————————————————————

Christian Worship 477:1,2,4

1 What is the world to me With all its vaunted pleasure When you and you alone, Lord Jesus, are my treasure! You only, dearest Lord, My soul’s delight shall be; You are my peace, my rest. What is the world to me! 2 The world seeks to be praised And honoured by the mighty, Yet never once reflects That they are frail and flighty. But what I truly prize Above all things is he, My Jesus, he alone. What is the world to me! 4 What is the world to me! My Jesus is my treasure, My life, my health, my wealth, My friend, my love, my pleasure, My joy, my crown, my all, My bliss eternally. Once more then I declare: What is the world to me!

INVOCATION, CONFESSION, AND ABSOLUTION ———————————————————————————————— Stand. M: In the name of the Father and of the Son ✙ and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

2

We always begin our worship in the name of our Triune God: the Father who created us, the Son who redeemed us, and the Spirit who lives in us.

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve

him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Saviour, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life

and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you the strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen. 3

To confess is to admit we’re far from perfect and so, without Jesus, shouldn’t be with a perfect God.

The pastor absolves us of our sins, that is, reminds us we’re forgiven because of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

PRAYER OF THE DAY ———————————————————————————————— M: Let us pray: Lord God, you call us to work in your kingdom and leave no

one standing idle. Help us to order our lives by your wisdom and to serve you in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Be seated. FIRST LESSON Numbers 12:1-15 ————————————————————————————————

Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. “Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the LORD heard this.

(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)

At once the LORD said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them went out. Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, he said, “Listen to my words:

“When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions,

4

We believe that the Bible is the source of all spiritual truth, and so we read lessons from it to learn who God is and what he’s done for us throughout history and still today.

I speak to them in dreams. But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” The anger of the LORD burned against them, and he left them. When the cloud lifted from above the tent, Miriam’s skin was leprous—

it became as white as snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease, and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.”

So Moses cried out to the LORD, “Please, God, heal her!” The LORD replied to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face, would

she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back.” So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back.

SECOND LESSON James 3:13-18 ————————————————————————————————

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

VERSE OF THE DAY 2 Corinthians 12:9a ———————————————————————————————— M: Alleluia. My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in

weakness. Alleluia.

The congregation stands.

GOSPEL Mark 9:30-37 ————————————————————————————————

They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.” But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.

They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Be seated.

HYMN OF THE DAY Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us ————————————————————————————————

Christian Worship 486

1 Lord of Glory, you have bought us With your lifeblood as the price, Never grudging for the lost ones That tremendous sacrifice, And with that have freely given Blessings countless as the sand To th’ unthankful and the evil With your own unsparing hand. 2 Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to give you Gladly, freely, of your own. With the sunshine of your goodness Melt our thankless hearts of stone Till our cold and selfish natures, Warmed by you, at length believe That more happy and more blessed ’Tis to give than to receive. 3 Wondrous honour you have given To our humblest charity In your own mysterious sentence, “You have done it unto me.” Can it be, O gracious Master, That you need what we can do, Saying by your poor and needy, “Give as I have giv’n to you”?

8

Gospel means “Good News,” and so this is a reading from the historical biographies of Jesus that tells us the good news of how Jesus came into this world to save us.

The Hymn of the Day is meant to especially celebrate today’s unique theme.

4 Yes, the sorrow and the suff’rings Which on ev’ry hand we view Channels are for gifts and off’rings Due by solemn right to you, Right of which we may not rob you, Debt we may not choose but pay Lest that face of love and pity Turn from us another day. 5 Lord of Glory, you have bought us With your lifeblood as the price, Never grudging for the lost ones That tremendous sacrifice. Give us faith to trust you boldly, Hope, to stay our souls on you; But, oh, best of all your graces, With your love our love renew. SERMON Mark 9:30-37 ————————————————————————————————

You Are the Greatest

APOSTLES’ CREED ———————————————————————————————— Stand. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERING ———————————————————————————————— To give electronically, visit StPaulOttawa.org and click on GIVE in the top menu. To give physically, either drop in the basket in the centre aisle, back of church, after the service, or mail to our church address: 208 Wilbrod Street, Ottawa, ON K1N 6L5

9

A sermon is simply a longer reflection on one of today’s readings from the Bible.

The Apostle’s Creed is a summary of the Christian faith based on statements of faith from the 100s. It is a summary of the facts our assurance of forgiveness is based on.

Christians give offerings as a form of worship, to show God our thanks and dependence on him, and to support our work within the community and world.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH ———————————————————————————————— Stand. Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people

according to their needs. Heavenly Father, keep us from craving and weeping after what we no

longer possess, but instead give us contentment in the daily bread you so graciously rain down upon us. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Cause your Holy Spirit to rest upon our church and our pastors, that we all may prophesy your Word faithfully in our church, and in turn, we may prophesy your Word in our homes and vocations. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord, bless our elders and church council with the necessary gifts of your Spirit, that they may faithfully serve the congregation, support our pastors and uphold the ministry of the Word amongst us. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

All these things and whatever else you know that we need, grant us, Father, for the sake of him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER ———————————————————————————————— C: Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins,

Be seated.

10

as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Prayer of the Church is our biggest prayer of the day, focusing on our day’s theme and asking God to care for us, our community, and the world.

Two-thousand years ago, Jesus taught his disciples to pray with these words. We use them still today, able to call God our Father because of Jesus.

CLOSING PRAYER AND BLESSING ———————————————————————————————— M: Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to

believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another.

Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favour and ✙ give you peace.

CLOSING HYMN May the Grace of Christ Our Saviour ————————————————————————————————

Christian Worship 326

1 May the grace of Christ our Saviour And the Father’s boundless love With the Holy Spirit’s favour Rest upon us from above. 2 So may we abide in union With each other and the Lord, Gathered here in blessed communion By the power of his Word. 3 Now with all the saints in heaven Thanks and praise to you we sing, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Three in One, our triune King.

June 2021-June 2022 Home Missions

HM-2020-05: Musical Assistance Home mission congregations are not always blessed with a pipe organ or even a piano. They often use portable equipment such as electronic keyboards, computer-generated music, or CD

players with sound amplification. The costs for computers, software, and sound equipment are a challenge when establishing mission congregations. Your gifts will enrich their worship

services as they acquire these electronic tools to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord."

HM-2020-13: WELS Campus Ministry Support Students on college campuses are often faced with many new choices, not all God-pleasing. During their college years, students are often living away from home for the first time - it is critical for them to have guidance from God's Word that is both meaningful and practical for daily living. The Campus Ministry Committee (CMC) assists congregations in ministering to college students and other young adults with the means of grace so they may grow in their faith, be trained for service, and reach out to the lost. One of the main ways the CMC assists congregations is in maintaining a synod-wide database of college students to help campus pastors reach and serve students while they are at college. The CMC also provides materials for campus pastors and congregations, funding for new ministry initiatives and ongoing ministries, counsel to ministries requesting assistance, and opportunities for campus pastors to grow spiritually and to network ideas through regular staff conferences. Your gifts to the CMC will help assist congregations to reach out and serve these young people on college campuses with the Word of God.

WM-2020-28: Latin America Special ProjectsThere are many other project requests across Latin America that enhance our gospel ministry efforts. Your giftswill help to fund projects such as Church-Planting or Sister Synod Support. Once someone takes all the onlinecourses offered through Academia Cristo and is identified as a promising leader and church planter, LatinAmerica missionaries will make on-the-ground training visits and offer seminars to continue mentoring him andsupporting him in his outreach to his communities. This is church planting support. The Latin AmericaMissions team has already made these kinds of visits in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico,Nicaragua, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, and many more places. Sister Synod Support is World Missions working toshare the gospel message throughout Latin America. The Lord has blessed that effort, and strong independentsister synods now exist in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, Peru, andPuerto Rico. Much of our work in Latin America has turned to the outreach efforts through Academia Cristo,as national pastors have taken over what had been the work of missionaries in their church. However, wecontinue to paftner with our sister synods in outreach and sometimes support them financially.

WM-2020-29: Native American Special ProjectsWELS Native American Missions are currently located on the Fort Apache and San Carlos ApacheReservations in eastem Arizona. Apache Christians are asking to be equipped to share Christ's love with morepeople on their own reservations and even into other tribes. Apache Lutheran teachers have connections withdifferent Native American tribes and are ready to reach out with the saving message of the gospel to the morethan 500 reservations scattered across North America. Your gifts will support the following projects and othersas needed: exploratory visits and online outreach to other Native American tribes; materials for outreach,Sunday schools, youth ministry, small group Bible studies and support groups, grief counseling, addictionrecovery ministries and more; property repairs and renovations at the churches, schools, parsonages andteacherages; and continuing education for the pastoral and teaching staff; and humanitarian aid projects.

God’s grace welcomes you, no matter who you are or where you come from - and so do we. We’re so glad we’ve had the opportunity to share God’s grace through Jesus to you. Jesus makes us special people, right with God and ready for life! We learn this from the Bible, God’s authentic message of grace and guidance for us.

Whether you are a first time visitor or returning guest, we are delighted to share our worship with you. Please come back and worship with us again. And if there’s any way we can serve you, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
