Blended Learning
“Blended learning is a student-centered approach to creating a learning experience whereby the learner interacts with other students, with the instructor, and with content (…) in both online and face-to-face environments. The instructional design of the experience organizes content, along with support materials, into synchronous and asynchronous learning events that are thoughtfully sequenced, with content that is delivered in a variety of modes ranging from traditional lecture to online tutorials.” Kevin Hodgson “Sharing time in a blended learning space” http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/6683
Blended Learning
Blended learning, combining the best elements of online and face-to-face education, is likely to emerge as the predominant teaching model of the future. John Watson “Blending Learning: The Convergence of Online and Face-to-face Education”
The integration of face-to-face and online learning to help enhance the classroom experience and extend learning through the innovative use of information and communications technology. Blended strategies enhance student engagement and learning through online activities to the course curriculum, and improve effectiveness and efficiencies by reducing lecture time. Flipped Classroom

Identify the low-level procedural concepts that you teach; then, do these outside of class.
Instruction takes place mostly at home/online; students practice in class
Flipping = watching videos at home
Flipped Classroom
• Fundamental premise: – Learning environment is student-centered
• Students share responsibility for learning• Students become engaged in learning process
– Students are introduced to content prior to class & practice in guided setting
– Online environment best for mechanical tasks, low level tasks

Flipped Language Class
• Do low-level, procedural concepts outside of class
• Not a lot of lecturing in FL class (no video lectures)
• BUT:– Mechanical language manipulations– Grammar explanations– Reading – Listening
Advantages
• More class time
• More TL use in class
• Learner control & differentiation
• Content permanently archived
• No absent student left behind
• Active learning
Challenges
• Access to technology
• Too much screen time
• Repetitive / boring to always watch videos
• Anxiety about self-study
• Students may fall behind
• Fancy term for ‘homework’
• Students might not do the work
• Preparation time
Technology ToolsFlipped Classroom
• PPT with recorded narration– Grammar explanation with examples– Cultural presentation with visuals, media– Listening comprehension based on pictures
Technology ToolsFlipped Classroom
• Snagit (screen casting software)– Records what is shown on computer screen– PPT and record narration– Output is a video– Show a variety of programs/screens
Technology ToolsFlipped Classroom
• Screen casting software (Doceri)– Grammar explanation with whiteboard writing
(how to conjugate)– Video: follow along directions on a map
Technology ToolsFlipped Classroom
• QR code with link to YouTube video– Grammar explanations– Video clips, songs– Listening comprehensions: daily routine,
famous singer interview– Virtual trip– History, culture
Technology ToolsFlipped Classroom
• Alternate Reality– Collection of different media linked to topic– Grammar– Culture– Exploratory Learning

Technology ToolsFlipped Classroom
• Podcasts (Audacity, AudioMemos; iTunesU)– Grammar explanations– Cultural information– Listening comprehension
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
SPEAKING
• Tellagami, Voki, AudioBoo, AudioMemos– Short recordings about family, school,
activities– Short narration (present, future, past)– Short cultural presentations
Use language in meaningful, personalized way outside of class
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
SPEAKING
• Video (phone camera, webcam)– Dialogues: greetings, ordering food in a
restaurant– Visual descriptions: daily routine
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
SPEAKING
• Skype– Cultural exchanges– Dialogues, interviews with another student
outside the school, even abroad
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
WRITING
• Cartoons (ToonDoo, Comics Head)– Short ‘stories’: greetings, q&a, grammar
practice (prepositions with countries, cities)– Short cultural ‘blurb’: famous person, cultural
concept, cultural difference
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
WRITING
• Ebooks (OurStory, Book Creator)– Short narrations in present, future, past– Creative writing– Descriptions– Personalized writing: daily routine, studies,
vacation
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
WRITING
• Postcards (Photocard, ecards)– Short narration about past weekend, future or
past vacation, plans for the future– Postcard exchange between students: Q&A,
getting to know each other– Description of own culture (birthday
celebrations, food habits)
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
WRITING
• Blogs, message boards, padlet– Expression of opinion– Discussion of a cultural topic, reading– Definitions
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
LISTENING
• Videos or audio (YouTube, news, interviews, songs, student presentations)– Cultural content– Listening comprehension (daily routine,
directions, interview, story)– Listen & find (finding vocabulary,
grammar items, expressions)
Technology ToolsBlended Learning
READING
• Newspaper, blogs, websites, webquests, poems– Reading comprehension with summary,
opinion, answering questions, filling out a chart/grid
– Find & explain: find grammar items
in the text and explain rule
My take: the best of both worlds
• Not merely grammar explanation videos outside of class (flipped)
• Extend language use to outside of class (blended)
• Personalized, creative language use
• Mix it up
• Make language use fun
