Meet the team…

Carol Ewels set up Always Consult following a career as a highly

experienced Senior Business Leader. This included more than 20 years’ service with Barclays Bank PLC, working in a variety of management and leadership roles. Her many skills include coaching and developing individuals to achieve their full potential. Carol is passionate about people development and takes professional pride in attaining the highest possible standards. Carol is a qualified assessor in the advice and guidance, customer service, business administration, and management and coaching sectors. Carol is the head of the Qualification Centre and maintains overall responsibility for assessment and quality assurance.

Sheila Henshall is a highly-experienced business advisor who is

SFEDI (Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative) accredited. She set up her own business after many years delivering external projects for Harper Adams University. Sheila specialises in social enterprise and business start-ups. She is a trained NLP practitioner and also a qualified assessor in advice and guidance. Experienced in training and coaching, customer service enhancements, business performance improvements, target growth and management skills, Sheila enjoys coaching and developing individuals to achieve their full potential and reaches the highest possible standards in her work.

Adrian Pitt has worked with children, young people and adults

for over 20 years. His specialism is supporting those people not in education, employment or training to overcome their barriers. As an experienced practitioner, manager and trainer for the Connexions Information, Advice and Guidance Service, Adrian took his passion for supporting staff in the sector and set up his own company, Develop-meant Training Consultants, in October 2009. He has also managed a Grade “A” awarded NVQ Centre. Adrian brings his knowledge and experience of assessing and internal quality assurance to us.

These courses enable the learner to provide high quality, professional advice and guidance to clients. They provide the learner with practical, transferable career skills and enable the learner’s organisation to provide efficient, effective advice and guidance services to its clients. Our Advice and Guidance courses are relevant to a wide range of professions, for example:

This list is by no means exhaustive. Basically, any organisation where staff give advice and guidance directly to clients can benefit from these courses. Always Consult offers two courses in this range, both awarded by OCR, one of the UK’s leading vocational awarding bodies, and accredited onto the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The Level 3 Certificate in Advice and Guidance is designed for staff who work directly with people, disseminating information and advice within set guidelines together with occasional guidance. To achieve the certificate, learners will need to achieve 12 credits from the mandatory units and a minimum of 9 credits from the available optional units. the Level 4 Diploma in Advice and Guidance will be perfect for people who already have experience of working directly with clients, disseminating information, advice, guidance and formal advocacy. Learners at this level are likely to have relationships with external organisations, and might also have some managerial or training responsibilities.

To achieve the diploma, learners need to achieve 17 credits from the Mandatory units and 20 credits from the available optional units.

Apprenticeships in Leadership

and Management at

Level 3 and 5

As many businesses will be aware, the Apprenticeship Levy came into effect in April 2017. The Levy is a new tax on businesses with an annual wage bill of £3m or over. From April 2017, all business with a s wage bill over £3m will pay 0.5% of any portion of their wages over this figure through the PAYE system. The money is then put into a Levy account. The money in the account can only be utilised to fund the delivery of apprenticeship training by an approved training provider.

Always Consult are proud to say we are one such provider, registered on the Register of Approved Training Providers (RoATP). As a specialist in Management and Leadership, Always Consult offer two apprenticeship courses designed to upskill your workforce and make your business run more efficiently. The apprenticeship ‘Standards’ that we deliver are government recognised qualifications. The courses have been written by industry with the help of the Institute for Leadership and Management (ILM) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Both courses can be adapted to suit the specific needs of a business or industry.

Team Leader / Supervisor Level 3

This course is ideal for those starting out in management and responsible for the activities, output and performance of a team. The Team Leader/Supervisor Apprenticeship is suitable for individuals who are working in a first line management role. Some of the roles or occupations that this qualification will support are: Supervisor, Team Leader, Project Officer, Foreperson and Shift Manager. The course lasts 12 – 15 months and the training is delivered by our highly qualified staff predominantly in the workplace through 1-2-1 individually tailored training, lectures, webinars and using a wealth of resources available through our e-portfolio system.

Operations /Departmental Manager Level 5

This course is ideal for established managers looking to take the next step in leading and managing larger teams and business units. Level 5 Managers are typically responsible for everything from creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change and financial and resource management. Roles may include Operations Manager, Regional Manager, Divisional Manager, Department Manager as well as other specialist managers. A suitable candidate is someone who manages teams or projects and is responsible for achieving operational or departmental goals and objectives as part of their organisation’s strategy. The course lasts 15 – 20 months and the training is delivered in much the same way as the Level 3 course above. The difference between the 2 courses is that whereas the Level 3 course aims to train the foundations of leadership and management, the level 5 courses expects the individual to have experience prior to the start of the course and will focus at a more strategic level.

Level 4 Diploma in Career Information and Advice: This qualification aims to provide accredited professional development opportunities for those currently working in the career guidance sector and to encourage progression within the industry.

The qualification has a core of Mandatory units which will be applicable to all staff and a wide range of Optional units to allow specialisation as appropriate.

This qualification usually forms a progression route for those wanting to move on to the Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development or other appropriate Higher Education qualifications.

Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development: Our “flagship” Careers qualification with OCR, which can be delivered in a number of ways. Careers staff with an existing Level 4 qualification i.e. Level 4 Advice and Guidance (old standards), Level 4 LDSS, can undertake three Mandatory Units from the Level 6. Completion of these Units, prior to May 2014, offers conditional access to the new CPA Register.

Level 4 qualified Advice and Guidance staff (old standards) or Level 4 LDSS staff can undertake all 7 Mandatory OCR Units with us, plus a series of Optional Units and achieve the FULL Level 6 Diploma. We acknowledge prior achievement, experience and competence and, therefore, do not “start from scratch” with existing Level 4 qualified staff.

We can deliver the full Level 6 Diploma to staff who are new to the service, but have extensive advice and guidance experience in previous roles.

A “Skills Scan” is undertaken before staff embark on ANY of our qualifications to ensure they’re on the right level of qualification that is “fit for purpose”.

Assurance (TAQA)

TAQA (Training Assessment and Quality Assurance) qualifications are for anyone working in, or hoping to work in, assessment and internal quality assurance in non-accredited or accredited learning i.e. assessing QCF qualifications. This includes managers in a range of industries and those working in quality assurance. For Assessors we recommend a Level 3 Award Certificate in Training Assessment and Quality Assurance. The following units come under this “umbrella”: City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (6317-30): A knowledge-only Award for those starting their journey as an assessor, or those who need to know about assessment practice but are not currently practising. City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (6317-31): For existing practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using the following assessment methods: observation/examining work products/oral questioning and discussion/use of witnesses/learner statements/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (6317-32): For existing practitioners who assess knowledge and/or skills in vocationally related subject areas using the following assessment methods: assessments in simulated environments/skills tests/oral and written questions/assignments/projects/case studies/RPL.

City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (6317-33): For existing practitioners who may use ALL of the above assessment methods based upon sound assessment principles. How long will my qualification take to complete? City and Guilds, the Awarding Body, gives you up to two years to complete your qualification, but in our experience, it usually takes between six and nine months. For Quality Assurance Staff we recommend the Level 4 Awards for Internal Quality Assurance staff. Under this “umbrella” you have the following Units: The Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is a knowledge-only award for those starting their journey as Internal Quality Assurance practitioners or those who need to know about internal quality assurance but are not carrying out quality assurance themselves. The Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is for practitioners who currently conduct internal quality assurance of the assessment process from within a centre/organisation by sample planning, monitoring and advising on the practice of assessors. The Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is for practitioners who currently lead the internal quality assurance process within a centre/organisation and have responsibility for managing assessment process quality, practice and Assessor performance.

The Rickter Scale® is a unique motivational, multi-sensory assessment and action planning process, designed specifically to measure soft outcomes and distance travelled. The Rickter Scale® itself is an A4 size hand-held board with ten headings down the left hand side and a magnetic slider for each heading. This slider can be moved along a scale of 0 to 10, enabling the user to scale how they feel about each topic. The board engages the user, removing the focus of the session from the interviewer which helps build rapport more quickly. The process is very empowering, encouraging individuals to see the 'bigger picture' and realise how different aspects of their life impact on each other. Through further dialogue with the interviewer, the individual can explore possibilities, make informed choices, take responsibility for their own goals and set a realistic action plan. For two days you get the opportunity to consider: what self-employment means to you, forms of trading, legislation, marketing and social media, finance, Revenue & Customs requirements, building confidence, business planning and more. It’s a development programme accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management for added kudos and credibility. The course can be run as an ILM level 2 Award in Understanding Enterprise or an ILM level 3 Award or certificate in Enterprise & Entrepreneurship. We can also run the course as an ILM 2-day Development Programme for those people who want a certificate but don’t want to do the specific set assignments. Customer Service: Do you want your organisation to stand head and shoulders above the rest? We offer customer service training as stand-alone “open courses” or as a nationally recognised qualification. A happy, satisfied customer is likely to return and tell others about the good experiences they had when dealing with your company. The OCR Level 2 Customer Service is for learners who undertake a customer service role and recognises that employment in the customer service sector involves a diverse range of functions. We also offer the ILM Level 2 unit on “Meeting Customer Needs” which goes towards the Award or Certificate in the Leadership and Team Skills qualification. Our flexibility enables us to offer bespoke training to your company covering many aspects of what good customer service looks like, without the extra work required to gain a qualification. Professional Practice Observations: We’ve learned from our experience that it often helps staff AND their managers to receive feedback on their professional practice from an external agency. Organisations have really benefitted from a “different point of view” and our constructive feedback. This process has supported the Appraisal/Performance Review system, highlighting to staff, Managers and Learning and Development teams areas of strength within the organisation and areas for development.

Group Work Skills: Many staff are fearful of working with groups. Their BIGGEST fear is, “What if I lose control?” Our one-day session investigates: preparation and planning, contracting with the group, learning styles, group formation, group dynamics, the “roles” people play, observing challenging behaviour, “The Drama Triangle”, and anti-discriminatory work. How To Say “No!” without Feeling Guilty: It’s our Assertiveness course. Many staff feel backed into corners when approached by colleagues or agencies bombarding them with requests. They just want to “help”. However, is it to the detriment of their own work? Are they crossing boundaries and taking on projects that are outside their remits? This one-day course looks at influencing and negotiating skills and how to say “No!” (in a diplomatic way, of course!). The programme equips staff with the confidence to be assertive, without being arrogant and effective communication skills that can be used to maintain positive working relationships.

Presentation Skills: Does PowerPoint petrify your staff? Does the thought of standing up in school assembly take them back to their younger days? Are they tight-lipped rather than well-equipped when liaising with external agencies? Our one-day “Presentation Skills” course relies on staff having to “bite the bullet”. We slowly, but surely, get them to “face the fear – and do it anyway!” Presenting to their colleagues in short, sharp bursts to begin with and then a lengthier well-planned presentation before they leave. No more knocking knees when we’ve finished with them! Work Ready, Get Steady – GO!: These are innovative and interactive pre-16 and post-16 programmes designed to encourage youngsters to reflect on the skills, attitudes and behaviours required to function successfully and achieve in the workplace. Not just another CV-writing workshop! This is a programme that inspires young people making the transition into Further Education, Training or Employment, that we can bespoke to meet the needs of those we’re delivering to. Most importantly, we offer an accredited OCR Level 1 Award in Customer Service or module(s) from the Edexcel/Pearson “Skilled For Life” programme that employers will recognise and value. Tranquil Times: According to the NHS 40% of all work-related illnesses are caused by stress. Good stress management is therefore critical to both the health of employees and to the business as a whole. First line managers play a key role in identifying and addressing sources of stress, which in some cases may even be a result of their own management styles. Tranquil Times helps managers identify the symptoms of stress and deal with stress in the workplace. Our course is aimed at first line managers and leaders and is an ILM-accredited development programme.
