LOCAL INTERVIEWS ADDED TO WYSU

THIS FALL Listen for a new interview segment on WYSU this fall, hosted by YSU English Department faculty member Tim Francisco. Tim’s interviews will air weekly during Morning Edition. Tim and his guests will take a unique and penetrating look at a wide variety of local subjects, including educational, community and social issues.Tim will also feature creative work by local thinkers, leaders and researchers, and he plans to include government and political issues that have broad community application.

LISTEN UP -- FALL FUND DRIVE NEWS! We are going to do it again! Another Listener Friendly Fund Drive! In fact, we are going to spend even less time on the air fundraising this October than we did this past spring. It will be less noise from us, and more music and other excellent uninterrupted programming for you. We can continue this revolutionary approach to public radio fundraising in large part thanks to you, the long-time supporter, who responds so very generously year after year. So please, quickly send in your renewal gift when you get your renewal letter, and perhaps even consider increasing your in-vestment in local public radio. You can also help us spread the word about the community value of local public radio. Help us convince others to invest in this valuable community asset. Our goal for this drive is $140,000, and the drive ends when we reach it! Your renewal will also enter you into the Grand Prize draw-ing, two spots on our Scandinavian Tour scheduled for May 2016. You can renew online anytime at www.wysu.org. It is easy, and so important. Our bi-annual fund drives are essential for the station’s suc-cess. Thank you so much for your ongoing support. Your help is critical to our success!

Our Alaskan trip for 2015 will enter the annals as yet another resounding success in our string of station-sponsored tours! Aside from some unusually beautiful weather and scenery in Alaska, 40 members of the WYSU tour group enjoyed opulent surroundings aboard the cruise ship Celebrity Solstice for seven unforgettable days. The ship boasts a theater, casino, two pools, 16 decks, a bocce court, library and gym. By far the greatest attraction seemed to be the food! Just be aware, in case you’re thinking about booking your own ticket -- the average weight gain on this cruise is one pound per day! Enjoy the photos.

UPDATE ON

Because the first bus for Scandinavia filled so quickly and left so many disappointed would-be travelers, we opened up a second bus for next May’s trip -- and now THAT group is almost filled! But there are still half a dozen spots remaining, so if you’d like to come with us to visit Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and an optional extension to St. Peters-burg, please contact us ASAP for more information.

9/5 Sonny Rollins. Mighty modern tenor saxophonist, including selections from his late Road Shows.

9/12 Buddy Tate. One of the great Swing tenors, Herschel Evans’ successor with the Basie band.

9/19 Ornette Coleman. See July 4 show; by this time I hope to have more grand revolutionary material.

9/26 Bud Freeman. Ebullient, beyond-category tenorman from the ‘20s, a slithery alternative to the Coleman Hawkins approach to the instrument.

10/3 Dexter Gordon. Vigorous Bop-and-after tenor saxophonist, a towering presence in the music.

10/10 Sonny Stitt. Alto and tenor sax, a pioneer parallel to Parker and a frequent partner for Dex.

10/17 Louis Bellson. Drummer and leader, a major modern-mainstream figure.

10/24 Edmond Hall. New Orleans traditional-Swing clarinetist with that little snarl in his sound, always in command.

10/31 Bud Freeman. I know we did a Bud program recently, but more music has materialized by this dazzling, uncategorizable tenor saxophonist.

11/7 Benny Carter. Serenely elegant master of the alto sax, master composer-arranger, etc.

11/14 Johnny Hodges. Alto romanticist, also magnificent on jump tunes; mostly in Ellingtonian settings.

11/21 J. C. Higginbotham. Mighty Swing-Era trombonist, in good company.

11/28 Ralph Sutton. Second-generation stride pianist, on a par with the stride founding fathers of the ‘20s and ‘30s.

12/5 Johnny Dodds. New Orleans clarinetist, with the classic 1920s Armstrong groups and some obscure colleagues, uniquely, intensely deep into the blues.

12/12 Granzstanding. Jazz at the Philharmonic and other projects of Norman Granz, entrepreneur, aficionado, and innovator.

12/19 Stan Getz. Modern tenor-sax wizard, light in tone and heavy in inspiration.

12/26 Horace Silver. Hard-bop pianist, bandleader and composer (of catchy tunes--beware earworms).

9/6 Contemporary Folk, Part LIV. Brooks Williams, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen are joined by lesser known artists Kevin Kinney, Bob Holdsworth, Larry Long and Will White.

9/13 Blues Legend, Part I. Four country and two modern bluesmen featured, including: Leadbelly, Memphis Minnie, Bill Broonzy, Jack Dupree and the late B. B. King.

9/20 Country Cookin’, Part XVIC. More musical country stew from the Southern Appalachians and elsewhere, with Front Range, Hobart Smith, etc.

9/27 Play It Again, Sam, Part XII. Two or more versions of the same song using different singers or groups.

10/4 Crime Does Not Pay. Hear how “the weed of crime bears bitter fruit” with this shocking musical expose starring “Jesse James,” “Stackerlee,” “Pearl Bryan,” “Richard Bruno Hauptman,” et al.

10/11 Reissues of Classic Folk LP’s, Part II. Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Woody Guthrie, Weavers, Leadbelly, Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger are some who are featured.

10/18 Fund Drive Hootnanny. I won’t be in the studio but show support for Folk Festival (on the air since 1969) by pledging “Greenback Dollars” during the broadcast at wysu.org, or call during office hours at 330-941-1481, or write to the station. Give generously to keep quality programming on WYSU. Thanks!

10/26 Contemporary Folk, Part LXIII. Stars Waterbug recording artists Gina Forsyth, Michael Jerling, Mark Dvorak, Karen Mal, Andrew Calhoun and many more.

11/1 Folk Sampler, Part CXX. A mixture of folk and folk-like entertainers including Dolly Parton and Steeleye Span.

11/8 Ragtime! Salutes a special American art form featuring Eubie Blake’s piano rolls from 1917-1921. Also Fred Sokolow and Ann Charters.

11/15 Back to the 1920s and ‘30s, One More Time. The best known country and blues players contrasted with some of the least known–Carter Family versus Georgia Yellow Hammers.

11/22 British and American Ballads. Music based on two classic guides to American ballads by G. Malcolm Laws is featured.

11/29 Traditional/Contemporary Contrasts. Country, blues, and folk sounds demonstrate the adaptability of this music generation after generation.

12/6 Extended Sets, Part L. Capturing my youth with three 30-minute sets by Fennig’s All Star String Band, New Lost City Ramblers, and the Weavers.

12/13 Celtic Folk. Scots and Irish have a rich musical tradition. Hear some of it on this tribute to a major part of our root music.

12/20 A Christmas Celebration. Secular and religious music for the Holiday season with Dan Fogelberg, Joan Baez, John Roberts and Tony Barrand, etc.

12/27 Celebration 40th-Update. Folk Festival encore with music featured from 1969 to 2009, plus additional years added at end.

All programs are subject to change without notice.
