Blaze
For percussion ensemble(from one to eight performers)with optional electroacoustic sounds
Nigel Morgan
About the Music
Blaze is a five-movement work for percussion ensemble and electroacousticsounds. It is based on a short poem Deep Sea Diver by the American poet RobertFrancis. The words were inspired by the exploits of the American zoologist andexplorer William Beebe. It is a remarkable poem and its economy of form andsimplicity of structure fascinating source material for setting to music, or as here, using as the basis for a play of rhythms, melodies, harmonies and timbres.
Commissioned by the Hull Philharmonic Society for an outstanding group ofyoung percussionists from the East Riding of Yorkshire, I wanted to create a workmight be performable in any combination from a soloist to a full eight-piecegroup. To achieve this I went back to the 1980s and examined my interest in andknowledge of the Balinese gamelan orchestra I first experienced under thetutelage of Gordon Jones, a remarkable musician who established the firstBalinese gamelan at Dartington in the 1970s.
The spirit of the gamelan is present on every page of this score. It seeks to beintensely democratic music and is best played from memory without a conductorwith players arranging their eight kits of instruments in an inward facing square. The notated music is divided into parts for rhythm, melody, chords, texturaluntuned sounds and electroacoustic interventions. The instruments listed in theintroduction and currently indicated in the performance score are suggestions notrequirements. Unlike the gamelan there is a more sophisticated play of tonalitypresent in this score, although similar 5 and 7 note scales found in traditionalgamelan do feature. Other hallmarks of gamelan are present, not least in vividoften explosive contrasts of tempo and dynamics.
Although on paper this is a piece lasting about 6 minutes there are manyopportunities to extend the music, just as there would be in an authenticcomposition for gamelan orchestra. Sections may be repeated ad lib, and indeedrearranged or inserted as in Movement 4. With the electroacoustic interventionsand the suggested balletic possibilities using the common hand gestures made bydivers to communicate underwater Blaze can become a colourful and dynamicpiece of music theatre. There are also important moments for all players assoloists playing partly improvised solos on a collection of hand percussion.
ii
Guide to performance
The performance score is marked up for eight players (marked on the score as 1-8) playing rhythm (R), melody (M), chords (C) and textures (T). Here are twoexamples of instrumental layout.
In Movement 1 is the layout is R1, R2, M3, M4, C5, C6, T7, T8.
• R1 and R2 manage between them four kits of instruments: hi and lo skins, metals and woods. Changes of kits are labelled and reinforced by coloured boxes(showing blue for metal, brown for woods).
• M3 and M4 are marimba and glockenspiel respectively.
• C5 and C6 are vibraphone and tubular bells.
• T7 and T8 are for untuned instruments (bass drum, rivet cymbal, snare drum, bodhran, ocean drum, tam-tam, tambourine, cowbell and claves)
The optional electroacoustic sounds are predominantly sound samples devised bypost graduate students at the Filey Studios, University of Hull, Scarboroughcampus for the premiere of Blaze in March 2012.
In Movement 2 the layout is:
• R1- hi-skins, R2 - Metals and Woods, R 3 – lo-skins and metals.
• M4 marimba M5 glock and xylophone
• C6 vibraphone
• T7 and T8 – untuned instruments (guiro, bell tree / wood chime, crash cymbal,tam-tam, bass drum, vibraslap, snare drum, ocean drum, musical saw).

Notation
The rhythm part is divided between high and low skins, metal and wood percussion.
When the note heads are normal this indicates that the high skins are playing, usually there will also be an indication of which member of the ensemble is playingskins, e.g. R1:
When x-shaped note heads are used, this indicates that the low skins are playing – thismay be a duo with other instruments indicated by a convention such as R1/3, or it maybe a solo, e.g. R3:
A teal box indicates that the metal group is playing – again, whether this is with orwithout the high skins indicated by a duo (e.g. R1/2) or a solo (e.g. R2):
On the melody stave a blue box indicates the glockenspiel is playing. On the chordsstave a blue box indicates the chord is to be played using tubular bells.
A dark red box indicates that the wood group is playing. The conventions are the same:
On the melody stave a dark red box indicates a xylophone passage.
Boxes may also be nested within one another – as in the lower example where the high skins play, followed by a metal solo and finally the metal and wood duo:
