    Poem by Langston Hughes:

I look at the worldby Langston Hughes

    I look at the world

From awakening eyes in a black face

And this is what I see:

    This fenced-off narrow space

    Assigned to me.

I look then at the silly walls

Through dark eyes in a dark face

And this is what I know:

That all these walls oppression builds

    Will have to go!

I look at my own body

    With eyes no longer blind

And I see that my own hands can make

The world that's in my mind.

    Then let us hurry, comrades,

    The road to find.

    Another

    I, Too, Sing America

    by Langston Hughes

    I, too, sing America.

    I am the darker brother.

They send me to eat in the kitchen

    When company comes,

    But I laugh,

    And eat well,

    And grow strong.

    Tomorrow,

    I'll be at the table

    When company comes.

    Nobody'll dare

    Say to me,

    "Eat in the kitchen,"

    Then.

    Besides,

They'll see how beautiful I am

    And be ashamed--

    I, too, am America.

    Strange Fruit.Strange Fruit

Lewis Allen made famous by Billie Holiday

    Southern trees bear strange fruit,

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,

Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,

Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,

The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,

Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,

Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,

For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,

For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,

Here is a strange and bitter crop.

    p. 82Crooks avoided the whole subject now. Maybe you

guys better go, he said. I aint sure I want you in here

no more. A colored man got to have some rights even if

    he dont like em.

What rights is he talking about?

Do African-Americans now have their rights?

    Is discrimination now over?

Do we still have migrantworkers? Are they simply

    another color?

    Are we still discriminating

    against certain races?

Is it better to ignore them?

Do we have an obligation to

    help them?

We all most likely agree that racism is a

    bad thing.

But is simply saying that racism is badenough?

Is it enough to just not commit racistcrimes?

The world is a dangerous place.

Not because of the people who

are evil; but because of thepeople who dont do anything

    about it.-Albert Einstein
