Please contact Jean in the first instance. Dates for your Diary is now available as a separate document. All events and meetings will be listed in date order to make it easier for you to organise your own diary. Members can attend any group without actually 'joining'. Please ring the organiser of the following interest/study groups for more detailed information. You may join one or more groups at any time of the year. Group Coordinator's Message All our groups are continuing to flourish and with the Boules group having already started and the possibility of another Card game group commencing, we now have 11 active groups. Any new ideas are always welcome! We would like to run some of the out and about events as their own group, and are looking for leaders to run these. Please contact either Jean or myself if you would be interested. I will be holding a get together of the group leaders in the summer to discuss the forthcoming open day Joy CARD GAMES PLAYING CARDS GROUP Are there any members who would like to play cards? We have a very good Bridge group that meets on alternate Monday afternoons in Henstridge Village Hall Lounge. If we have enough interest, we could start a more light hearted group, playing more simple games like 7 card whist and rummy and maybe move on to WHIST, SOLO and EUCHRE. I already have a group of friends playing Euchre on an occasional basis. If we could find another 6 people, we could start a group to alternate with the Bridge group. I would not anticipate that the group would start before mid September Around the Groups GENERAL MEETINGS are held in Henstridge Village Hall at 2.30pm on the first Tuesday of alternate months. Members £1.50 Visitors 2.50 All our general meetings are publicised in The Blackmore Vale Magazine, The Visitor, local parish magazines, Wot’s On in Henstridge and the Villager’ in Horsington. Posters are circulated to public places in Stalbridge, Henstridge, Wincanton, Templecombe and Milborne Port.

WALKING GROUP

In April the group met at West Stour, where we followed the valley through Fifehead Magdalen towards Marnhull and then returned through Stour Provost with its old renovated Mill. Naturally we retired to The Ship for refreshments. Thanks go to Bridget for arranging and leading this walk. In May we repeated our first walk of last year convening at Henstridge Village Hall and walking clockwise out of the village by the church, over to the Inwood Estate, skirting west: returning round the outskirts of

Yenston and along Whitechurch Lane. Both walks were well supported as the group continues to grow in numbers. Our walk at the end of June will be starting from Sturminster Newton Mill. Dennis

READING GROUP

Our May read was 'Fault Line' by Robert Goddard. A man is found dead in his car parked at the end

of a lonely track with the engine running and a tube feeding fumes from the exhaust through the window. An average suicide perhaps except for the seven year old boy locked in the boot still alive. For Jonathan Kellaway the past littered with deaths and secrets is somewhere he does not wish to go. However he is forced to find explanations. Not everyone enjoyed this book but all agreed it is a good read. We followed 'Fault Line' with 'Double Cross; the true story of the D-Day spies' by Ben Macintyre. This book describes an elaborate plot to confuse the Germans, so elaborate that at times it is difficult to follow. Some of it

seems more like fantasy than fact. We will discuss this book at our next meeting which will be after this Newsletter has gone to press. Do come and join in the discussions on the fourth Friday at The Virginia Ash 11.15am. The meetings are always interesting. Jean

GARDEN GROUP

A group of us visited Staddlestones in May. The surrounding estate was most impressive with an avenue of limes which led downhill to the small hamlet next to Witchampton Mill.

The garden opened as part of the NGS is beautifully situated with a chalk stream running through the

centre which was crossed by a wooden bridge. Despite the lack of sunshine we thoroughly enjoyed the choice of colour combinations; the deep crimson tulips amongst the light green ferns particularly bought the wooded area alive.

There will be further opportunities to visit this year the dates are in the Dorset NGS booklet. The Yarlington Plant Fair was the usual crowded popular annual event, there were many great value plants and herbs and useful advice from the stall holders. Our May visit was to Forest Lodge this private garden is set in 3 acres of wonderful countryside with spectacular views across the Blackmore Vale. The weather was a vast improvement on the previous day's deluge and Ann even tried out the old wooden hammock.

This garden has many interesting sculptures and the wonderful camellias and rhododendrons which surround the lake are in the most beautiful shades of reds and apricot. There is another chance to visit on the 22nd June when the roses will be flowering

BOULES GROUP

We have at last started our Boules afternoons and five of us braved the wet weather to have a couple of games. We wouldn't usually be playing in the wet, but as it started to rain after we arrived, we wanted to give it a go! We are playing on the first and third Tuesday of each month, weather permitting! We started off at the Kings Arms in East Stour, but it I discovered that the pitch was not in the state I was expecting it to be, so from now on we will be playing at The Plough in Manston. to They have recently relaid their pitch and it is super! It is only a couple of miles out of Sturminster Newton, so I am hoping everyone will be ok with this. The pub is open all day (I'm thinking of refreshments!) Please do get in touch with me if you would like to join our group

oo0oo COMPUTING GROUP

We meet every other Wednesday afternoon from 2.00 – 4.00pm. depending on the teacher's commitments.

There are usually 6/8 of us, and it is very low key. We can suggest anything we would like to find out about. Anybody who is interested is very welcome. Please contact Anna Lister on 01963 371544.

LOCAL HISTORY

In May we visited Athelhampton House in the Piddle Valley. This is said to be one of the finest 15

th

century manor houses in England and is surrounded by one the great architectural gardens. We were fortunate with the weather and had a thoroughly enjoyable day The end of May found us at the new Visitor Centre and Museum at Hillbrush, the brush factory, which has been operating in Mere for nearly 100 years. It is amazing how many types of brushes they make and how robots have taken over in the manufacturing. In June we walked around Henstridge looking at some of the houses we had discussed at our meetings earlier in the year and working out where all the shops used to be. An interesting afternoon. On Friday 14

th July we

will be visiting Lytes Cary Manor, a delightful small manor house dating back the 14

th century. We

will meet 11am outside the cafe or inside if wet. Anyone wanting to borrow a cd about the manor before our visit please contact Jean. In August we hope to meet up with the Church Recorders again. Jean

OUT AND ABOUT

We have enjoyed our usual round of activities. There have been live screenings of opera and ballet; Pudding Club in May and lunch at The Stags Head in June; table Tennis and croquet. Other outings included Sherborne Country Fair and a coach trip to West Bay and Lyme Regis. At the end of May we joined with the Local History Group to visit the new Visitor Centre at Hillbrush, the brush factory , at Mere. We recommend this as an interesting place to visit with a good cafe! There is always something going on in local villages or towns. Our coffee mornings on the third Friday of the month at The Virginia Ash at 11.15am are well attended and sociable so do come along. Jean Please visit the Blackmore Vale website to see new pages for the various groups under the Out and About page. Jean
