Blackbird Class
Home Learning Week: 20th April 2020
English (Mr Gum) Maths (Length) Connected Curriculum (all week)
Mon Making predictions
Read ‘English resource 1’ (1 page) which tells
us about Jake the dog in Mr Gum’s garden.
What could Mr Gum do to stop Jake ruining
his garden?
Write down at least 3 different ways Mr
Gum could stop Jake. Try to include lots of
details.
Find a ruler or a tape measure. Make sure it shows
centimetres not inches.
Measure the length of 10 things in your house in
centimetres (e.g. 75cm) or metres and centimetres
(e.g. 1m 32cm). Measure to the nearest centimetre.
Write down your measurements in a chart, ordering
them from smallest to largest. e.g.
Object Length
Battery 5cm
Pencil 9cm
Science (Plants)
Options
1) If possible, set up the seed
investigation in Science
Resource 1. Larger seeds like
broad beans or peas work best
and can be bought in packs in
supermarkets.
2) Find the seeds! Can you find
the seeds in fruits and
vegetables? Can you grow a
plant from them?
* Soak the seeds in water for a
day or two to remove any ‘gunk’
* Leave them to dry out
thoroughly
* Plant them in soil and keep
them watered
3) Flower/bird hunt
Use the flower and bird
identification sheets on the
Blackbird Home Learning page
to try and name flowers and
birds in your local area.
Tue Understanding a text
Read ‘English Resource 2’ (2 pages).
Look at ‘English Resource 3’ and answer the
questions.
Equivalent measures – metres & centimetres
1 metre (m) = 100 centimetres (cm)
Look at Maths Resource 1. Choose one of the 3 sets
of questions (easier, medium or harder) to complete.
If you want a further challenge, do the extension on
the following page. If you are finding it tricky, try
the worksheet on the Home Learning page.
Wed Planning a description
Billy William the Third runs a disgusting
butcher’s shop.
Think of a shop of your own. It doesn’t have
to be disgusting and could even have
magical/fantasy things for sale. Look at
‘English Resource 4’ to help you plan your
ideas. (Don’t write all about it – you will do
that tomorrow.)
Equivalent measures – cm & mm
1 centimetre (cm) = 10 millimetres (mm)
Look at cm & mm on a ruler to help with these.
Look at Maths Resource 2. Choose one of the 3 sets
of questions (easier, medium or harder) to complete.
If you want a further challenge, do the extension on
the following page. If you are finding it tricky, try
the worksheet on the Home Learning page.

Thu Writing a description of a place
Look back at the shop plan you did
yesterday.
Describe your shop by writing a
paragraph about it.
Try to include:
* great vocabulary (words)
* prepositions of place
On the shelves were…
Against one wall was…
In the corner was…
Hanging from the ceiling were…
* lots of details
Find the perimeter
We find the perimeter of a shape by adding up all the
lengths around the shape.
Perimeter = 5 + 5 + 2 + 2 = 14cm
Find some square and rectangular shapes in your
house. Measure the length of each side and add them
together to find the perimeter.
Use column addition to add bigger
numbers together. e.g.
Book 18 + 18 + 12 + 12 = 60cm
R.E. (Sikhism)
What can you remember about
Sikhism? Watch the film to
refresh your memory. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/religious-studies-ks2-what-is-sikhism/zn4h382
Draw a picture of the Golden
Temple. You could copy the picture
on R.E. Resource 1, or if you want a
real challenge, try following one of
the video clips below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_uPxYsTJ5E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gWmYcegySc
Geography/Art
Make a 3d model of one of the
buildings in your area, or your own
house. Use Google Streetview to
find a picture. You could make the
basic shape from cardboard and use
papier mache to cover it. When it
is dry, you could paint or decorate
it.
To make papier mache, mix water
and PVA glue (or flour) together to
make a runny paste. Then soak
pieces of newspaper or paper in the
paste and put on your model. Leave
to dry thoroughly before painting.
Fri Writing a description of a person
Think about the owner of the shop you
have created. Write a paragraph about
him or her. Think about:
* his/her name
* what he/she looks like
* how long they have owned the shop
* why they like or dislike owning the shop
Extension: What hopes and dreams does
the owner have for the future? Describe
them.
Practise your times tables!
Use TT Rockstars or
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
or play ‘Prodigy’
or review your skills on https://www.mathschase.com/

English Resource 4: Planning your own shop
Think of your own shop. It could be a real shop, like a toy shop, or it could sell magical or fantasy things.
Use the following questions to help you think of ideas. Write your ideas as notes (a few words) not as a full
description – you will do that tomorrow. You could draw a picture and label it if you find that easier.
1) Is your shop lovely or disgusting?
2) What kind of shop is it?
3) What does it sell?
4) What is special about the things you sell?
5) What is the name of the shop?
