An annual orchid to 30 centimetres tall but

usually less introduced from South

Africa.

A relatively new but already common weed of

the Mount Lofty Ranges and the

southeast of South Australia. Also found in

Western Victoria and Western Australia.

Self-pollinating and capable of producing large

quantities of fine seed, which is dispersed by

the wind, this weed is likely to become

abundant in the next few years.

Phalaris aquatica

A tall perennial grass to 3 metres high when

flowering but usually less.

Introduced initially as a pasture grass Phalaris

has become a common weed of roadsides and

native vegetation in the higher rainfall areas of

southern Australia.

Phalaris responds to disturbance and can form

thick stands which out compete native plants.

chemicals in native vegetation without incurring

from the Baker residence being introduced as a

Gladiolus undulates

An annual bulbous species with thin erect strap

like leaves. Becoming common in the Mount

Lofty Ranges in higher rainfall areas. Difficult to

control in native vegetation by spraying without

incurring non target damage. Hand pulling can

are easily dislocated spreading the weed.

Furze Muraltia is a weed originating from South

Africa that has escaped from plantings at the

Morialta Barns. It is a stiff upright shrub up to

Spanish Heath (Erica lusitanica)

Erica is an escaped garden plant originally from

south-western Europe. It is a hardy perennial

shrub, growing up to 3m high, with a woody

branched root system. This root system is the

key to controlling Erica; if you snap it off, the

plant will sucker making control efforts much

more difficult.

Erica starts actively growing in late winter

through to spring when it flowers prolifically.

Cut and Swab

Larger plants - cut and swab

and scar trunk and tuber and

DISCLAIMERS

• This material is targeted at the Norton Summit area of the Mt Lofty Ranges. Be aware that each property will vary because of the specific circumstances that the target weed occurs in, ie a protected shaded gully may have a

different treatment time to an exposed northern aspect on top of a hill. If in doubt seek professional advice (eg Kieran Brewer of SAIF, [email protected] or from the NRM, contact Katrina Warner on

[email protected]).

• If you have little prior experience with weed identification or use of herbicides, seek advice before spraying. Mistakes can do damage to the environment and to your personal wellbeing.
