InsIght of a salesmanA pastor, while checking the church storeroom discovered several car-tons of new Bibles that had never been opened. So at his Sunday morn-ing sermon he asked for three volunteers from the congregation who would be willing to sell the Bibles door-to-door for $10.00 each to raise des-perately needed money for the church.

Bill, Sid and Tom all raised their hands to vol-unteer for the task.

The minister knew that Bill and Sid earned their living as salesmen and were likely capable of sell-ing some bibles. But he had serious doubts about Tom who was a local farmer, who had always kept to himself because he was embarrassed by his speech impediment.

Poor Tom stuttered badly. But, not wanting to dis-courage Tom, the minis-ter decided to let him try anyway.

He sent the three of them out with the back seat of their cars stacked with bibles. He asked them to meet with him and report the results of their door-to-door selling efforts the following Sunday.

Eager to find out how successful they were, the minister immediately asked Bill, “Well, Bill, how did you make out selling our bibles last week?”

Proudly handing the rev-erend an envelope, Bill replied, “Using My sales prowess, I was able to sell 20 bibles, and here’s the $200.00 I collected on behalf of the church. “Fine job, Bill!” The min-ister said, vigorously shaking his hand. “You are indeed a fine sales-man and the church is indebted to you.”

Turning to Sid, “And Sid, how many bibles did you sell for the church last week?” Sid, smiling and sticking out his chest, confidently replied “I am a professional salesman. I sold 28 bibles on behalf of the church, and here’s

$280.00 I collected.” The minister responded, “That absolutely splen-did, Sid. You are truly a professional salesman and the church is also indebted to you.”

Apprehensively, the min-ister turned to Tom and said, “And Tom, did you manage to sell any bibles last week?”

Tom silently offered the minister a large envelope. The minister opened and counted the contents. “What is this?” the minis-ter exclaimed. “Tom there’s $3200.00 in here! Are you suggesting that you sold 320 bibles for the church, door-to-door, in just one week?”

Tom just nodded. “That’s impossible!” both Bill and Sid said in unison. “We are professional salesmen, yet you claim to have sold 10 times as many bibles as we could. “Yes, this seem unlikely, “the minister agreed. I think you’d better explain how you managed to accomplish this, Tom.”

Tom shrugged, I-I-I re-re-really do-do-don’t kn-kn-know f-f-f for sh-sh-sh-sure, he stammered, Impatiently, the minister interrupted. “For crying out loud, Tom just tell us what you said to them when they answered the door!

cAn yOu be AnAnAiS?

Saul, notorious for persecuting Christians, has de-parted Jerusalem after obtaining a letter granting him authority to arrest any Christians he can find in Damascus. He is to bring these believers to Jerusalem for trial. But lo and behold, while on the road to Da-mascus he has a dramatic, life-changing conversion experience.

Out of a shining light Jesus calls to him and said “Saul, why are you persecuting me?”Saul is struck blind. Jesus commands Saul to go to Damascus and wait to be told what he must do.

He is led to the city by those who are traveling with him and he waits for three days and nights without any food or water. As Saul sits and waits, the scene fades momentarily and now we are introduced to Ananias who is called “a disciple at Damascus.”

The Lord appears to Ananias in a vision and tells him “Arise and go to the street called Straight and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.” God tells this disciple to run an errand on His behalf.

I like to think that Ananias began the sentence with uncertainty and confusion, and perhaps with with the words “Ummm…God….?” He says “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.”Ananias had not only heard of how Saul had been systematically destroying the church in Jerusalem, hunting down men and women and turning them over to the authorities, but also knew that he was on the march to Damascus, ready to destroy that church as well.Paul’s hatred for Christ and His followers was common knowledge.

And now here God asks Ananias to go and confront the ringleader of the persecutors. Ananias takes the opportunity to remind God of Saul’s credentials. Af-ter all, he has done “harm to Your saints in Jerusalem” and is now ready to “bind all who call on Your name” in Damascus.Ananias showed weakness here. After all, this Saul guy was dangerous! Didn’t God know that?

God knew all about Saul. He tells Ananias “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My sake.”God knew exactly who Saul was and gave Ana-nias the assurance that He was still in control. As a matter of fact, providence dictated that He would use this man to do incredible things for His kingdom.

Saul, the chief of sinners, the persecutor of the church, was God’s chosen means of bringing the gospel to great and small, Jew and Gentile alike.Ananias is obedient. He appears before Saul and has the great honor of lay-ing his hands on this broken man in the name of the Holy Spirit. At that moment Saul’s blindness is ended.

As a symbol of the end of his spiritual blindness he is baptized, probably by the hand of Ananias him-self, and now is called by the name Paul.At this point Ananias fades from the story and we hear of him no more. His role in the drama of Acts is small, yet sig-nificant. We see a man who wavered when he heard God’s voice, yet despite his initial hesitation he was faithful and obedient.

While at first he thought he might have to correct God, in the end he submitted himself and his very life to God’s call. God then used this man to further His purposes in launching the career of the most influen-tial of the apostles. Ananias’ small act of obedience led to a great harvest for the kingdom.

Our perspective is so small, so limited. God’s per-spective is wide, taking in all of history in a single glance. We need to rely on Him, on His Word, on His voice, trusting that He will not lead us astray.

“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leav-ing the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiv-ing in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. DAltOn ADDing typewriter cOmpAnyOne of the largest and most famous manufacturing con-cerns in the history of Poplar Bluff industry was the Dalton Adding Typewriter Company A man named Hopkins in St. Louis had invented the machine and persuaded his friend, James L. Dalton, to help finance its manufacture.

Mr. Dalton had come to Poplar Bluff from Doniphan in 1885, and by the turn of the cen-tury, was manager of the large four story Wright-Dalton-Bell-Anchor Department Store, a merchandising business that grossed up to $760,000 a year, with a sales force of 125 per-sons and 12 delivery wagons. Mr. Dalton later stated, “One of our greatest accomplish-ments was the bringing into this town a solid train load of 35 cars of merchandise. The general manager of the Missouri Pacific Railroad per-sonally made the trip with this train for a considerable part of the journey, and we entered the town with green and red fire and a great demonstration.”

So, as a secondary invest-ment, Mr. Dalton helped finance the machine known as the adding typewriter. The Dalton Adding Typewriter Company was incorporated in

August, 1903, with a capital of $500,000. Work began in one room of what was known as the Davidson Building on the corner of Main and Pine Streets with about twenty-five employees.

By June, 1907, the company occupied the entire Davidson Building and employed 100 men. In 1908, the Dalton Company had a payroll of nearly $10,000 per month, and had a new government con-tract for 125 machines. Orders were also coming in from near-ly every country in the world. Mr. Dalton was forced to resign at the department store to devote his full time to the Adding Typewriter Company. Describing the machine, the Poplar Bluff newspaper, the “Daily Republican” reported, “The machine is truly a mar-vel. It adds, subtracts, multi-plies, divides, figures interest, proves invoices, and performs many other mathematical cal-culations with such facility, speed, and accuracy as to be almost beyond belief.”

In November, 1909, the capi-tal stock was increased to $1,500,000 to enable the com-pany to build a new factory building on the river front in Poplar Bluff. The new factory,

built at a cost of $100,000, was dedicated February 14, 1911. One of the biggest electric signs in the state was placed on top the new factory. The sign, 250 feet long and 4 feet high, advertised the “Dalton Adding and Listing Machine Company.” President Dalton made arrangements with the Iron Mountain Railroad to connect the sign with the block system, and as a train pulled into the yard, the sign would light automatically.

Hours for the new Dalton Factory were 7:10 A.M. to 6 P.M. five days a week and until noon on Saturday until state legislation in about 1913-1914 enacted a nine-hour day. The company then began operating all day on Saturday.

As early as 1906, rumors had begun to circulate that the com-pany was leaving Poplar Bluff. Finally, in 1914, it became necessary to move the factory to Cincinnati, Ohio, as it had grown so much that a larger location with more facilities was needed. Here the plant grew to be one of the largest in the world. On June 27, 1914, the plant ceased operation in Poplar Bluff, a great loss to the industry of our city.

gun rights advocates in saratoga springs, n.y., reportedly burned nearly one thousand gun regis-tration forms to ashes in a clear act of civil disobedi-ence.

under the hastily-passed safe act, gun own-ers have until april 15 to register their so- called semi-automatic rifles that fall under the state’s own definition of “military-style assault weapons.” the forms they burned are the very forms the state wants them to turn in registering their firearms.

Instead, gun owners ral-lied at the saratoga-Wilton elks lodge 161 to torch the forms in a “symbolic pro-test,” “this is a civil rights issue.” Registration leads to confiscation.”

DiD yOu hAve A Drug prOblem while

grOwing up?The other day, someone at the store over on the Eastside said they read about a methamphet-amine lab found in a old farm house in the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question. Why didn’t we have a Drug prob-lem when we were growing up?

I replied, I had a Drug problem when I was young; I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for wed-dings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather.

I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn’t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.

I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a pro-fanity, I was drug out to pull weeds in Mom’s garden and flower beds, and cockleburs out in Dad’s fields. I was drug to the homes of family, friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood , and if my Mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me to the woodshed.

Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, or think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin, and if today’s children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place.

God bless the parents who drugged us. Jack Burton 1221 County Rd 525 Off Hwy W (1-1/4 Mile)

i DOn’t wAnt tO Drive AnOther nAilSam was a carpenter for fifty years. He pounded out blood, sweat and tears. One day he hung his hammer up, he want-ed to do the things he loved. What once was the Sunday fishing, was now seven days a week.

He told his wife to, “Find me, I’ll be down at the creek. Cause I don’t want to drive another nail. I’ve worked hard to do my job and I didn’t quale. I’ve got the scars on my two hands

To show I haven’t failed. But I don’t want to drive another nail.”

Now she was a woman full of faith and old Sam was full of pride As he knew he had one more job to do before he died. Easter Sunday rolled around in a country church for the lost and found. Old Sam was there against his will As the preacher spoke on Calvary’s Hill, Of how the took the Master and nailed him to the tree.

You could hear old Sam crying as he feel down on his knees. “I don’t want to drive another nail, I want to live my life for You, I want to do His will. You’ve got the scars on Your two hands that show where I have failed. Lord, I don’t want to drive an-other nail.”

History oF PoPlAr bluFF Begley Wagon and Coffin Factories

In December, 1877, a young blacksmith named George Begley arrived in Poplar Bluff and opened a shop on the corner of Pine and Broadway. After a short time, he realized Poplar Bluff was a good market for wagons and buggies and started to manufacture horse-drawn vehicles.

Mr. Begley’s business soon outgrew its first location, and a larger shop was erected on the corner of Vine and Broadway. He could make about twenty-five wagons per year.

After a few years, the business outgrew these quarters, and in the fall of 1903, a large brick building was built

at a cost of about $85,000. The new factory was reputed to be the largest wagon factory in South Missouri or North Arkansas. Power was furnished by a large gasoline engine. A force of fifteen men was now able to produce about 200 wagons a year. Farm, log, and spring wagons were made.

Begley sold more than 1000 wag-ons in Poplar Bluff and vicinity, for as the newspaper explained in 1903, “As for the imported stuff, while it sells cheaper, the quality is not nearly so good, and wise buyers prefer the home made.”

Mr. Begley, realizing the future of the undertaking business, went to an undertaking school and learned the art of embalming. With Jacob Frank furnishing the livery equipment, he established the first mortu-ary in Poplar Bluff, the Frank Undertaking Company, in 1879. This company is still operating as Cotrell Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Begley soon began making coffins for use in his company. In March, 1911, he began the manufacturing of coffins to sell to other companies in the building erected for the wagon factory. The wagon manufacture was continued as a secondary line, while the main busi-ness was making coffins.

glObAl wArmingPatrick Moore Ph. D. “a Co-founder of Greenpeace” said lets look at the historical record. When modern life evolved over 500 million years ago, CO2 was more than 10 times higher than today, yet life flour-ished at this time. Then an ice age occurred 450 million years ago when CO2 was 10 times higher than today.

The fact that we had both higher temperatures and an ice age at a time when CO2 emissions were 10 times higher than they are today fundamentally contradicts the cer-tainty that human- caused CO2 emissions are the main cause of global warming.

The increase in temperature between 1910 and 1940 was vir-tually identical to the increase between 1970 and 2000. Yet the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) does not attribute

the increase from 1910-1940 to ‘human influence.’ They are clear in their belief that human emis-sions impact only the increase since the mid-20th century. Why does the IPCC believe that a virtually identical increase in temperature after 1950 is caused mainly by ‘human influence,’ when it has no explanation for the nearly identical increase from 1910-1940?

Moore went on to say: Today, we live in an unusually cold period in the history of life on earth and there is no reason to believe that a warmer climate would be anything but ben-eficial for humans and the majority of other species. There is ample rea-son to believe that a sharp cooling of the climate would bring disastrous results for human civilization.

It is ‘extremely likely’ that a warmer temperature than today’s would be far better than a cooler one.”

Brian Richards made a long trek from his home to White’s Ferry Road Church of Christ in West Monroe, La., where Robertson introduced him to the church on March 2, before publicly baptiz-ing him.

“From New Jersey, I can count on one hand the people I met from New Jersey,” Robertson quipped, before telling the congregation about Richards’ long journey to the house of worship.

The “Duck Dynasty” star explains the Christian salvation message and describes the significance of baptism before dunking Richards under the water.

“You are now going to die to sin,” Robertson told Richards before-hand. “You’re going to be buried — the old you — and the new you will come forth. God will seal you with his spirit and you will be guaranteed to be raised from the dead one day and live forever. Good news, you know?”

Spring has sprung and the grass has ris. I wonder where the flowers is. I remember this from my very early childhood. I know the grammar isn’t correct, but this has stayed with me all these years. The flowers this year are a little late but as soon as the ice and snow melted, the snow cro-cus popped through the earth and our flowers were beautiful for the little time that they bloomed.

The jonquils also were late coming up and their blooms opened and it looks like they will be bloomed out before Easter.

The hummingbirds should be here in a few days after you read this ar-ticle. My wife is prepared for their arrival and has already placed one feeder out to let the early scouts know the food will be ready for them when the main migration ar-rives. It seems like April 5 or 6 is the usual arrival date fore the earliest ones to arrive at our house.

As promised in last month’s article, I will try to explain how the UKC coon dog shows and hunts are con-ducted and how the winners of the hunt are determined.

First off, there are now seven breeds

of coon hounds. The newest breed to be registered is the American Leop-ard. The older breeds are American Black and Tan, Bluetick, English, Plott, Redbone and treeing Walker. Each of the breeds have their own standard as to weight, height, color, ear length, body conformation and general make-up.

The dogs are judged with other dogs of their breed who might be entered and they then are showed against the best of the other breeds. The males and females are judged sepa-rately. The champions and grand champions also are judged male and female in separate classes. It takes 100 points to become a champion and the dog must win at least one show against competition to be-come a show champion. They can win 35 points by winning best of class, breed and show at any event regardless of the number of entries. To become a Grand champion, it takes five wins in the champion class to gain that title. The judge of the show is licensed by UKC and one judge is required for a show.

Dogs entered in the hunt are drawn out four to a cast if there are enough entries. The dogs are taken to the woods by a guide and hunted for

two hours. The first dog declared strike on a track receives 100 points. Second strike gets 75 points, third 50 and fourth 25. If a raccoon is seen the points are plus. If none is found, the tree is circled and the points are stared as before after the dogs are led far enough from the first tree that they will not return to the first tree. If a dog returns to the first tree, no points are put on the scorecard.

When the time is over, the dogs are caught and the scorecard taken to the hunt headquarters to a hunt director or master of hounds. There are a lot of rules besides what is mentioned in this article, but the UKC nite hunts are a lot of fun if you have a good dog and draw out with other good dogs. It requires 100 competition points to become a nite champion and the dog must have at least one first place. First place winner is awarded 40 points and each place below that is five points less down to five points for the last places.

In our area, there are very few events where more than four or five places are awarded. Five nite champion wins is required for a dog to earn the title Grand nite champion.

The Butler County Coon Hunters Club held their first of seven events March 15. The club’s headquarters are located off Highway 53, south of Poplar Bluff.

There were 11 dogs entered in the show and 18 hunted in the nite hunt. The show winners were ch. Mae Hammer, a treeing Walker won that category. Owner is Tyler Sanders. Champion female was An-nie, a Redbone owned by Leland Fincher. Fincher’s English, Possum won best male of show and Image, an Englis owned by Joe Newell won best female of show. Sport, a Tree-ing Walker owned by Josh Harrison won the nite champion. First place in the registered hunt was a TW Spur Strap, owned by Jordan Mc-Gowan. Second went to Ice T, also a TW, owned by David Fisher. Third place was Craig Clay’s Black and Tan 40 Cal. And fourth was Tar, an-other TW owned by Doyle Albright.

The treeing contest was won by Trix-ie, a TW owned by Perry Treat. The club’s next event will be an HTX test on April 5.

UKC events in April in Missouri:Marble Hill April 5 show and hunt. Daisy April 11, show and hunt.Myrtle April 18 , hunt only

Arkansas in April:April 19 Ravenden Spring show and hunt. April 25 Walnut Ridge show and hunt.Information on these events are published in Coonhound Blood-lines.

Fishing has been both good and bad. Crappie are being caught in good numbers at Lake Wappapello mostly in the afternoon when there is little or now wind and when it is sunny. My personal opinion on fish-ing is that the best time to go fish-ing is when you can get the time and find someone to go with. Hopefully next month there will be a tourna-ment schedule for bass and crap-pie fishing tournaments. There is a crappie tournament at Lake Wap-papello April 20. The spring wild turkey season in Missouri kicks off with the youth portion April 12 and 13. The regular season is later in the month.

A VISITor AT THIS HoUr?I’ll always remember it. I’ll be hard-pressed to ever forget the sound of knocking during that particular night. For whatever reason at 0213 a single noise had to occur in the quiet stillness of my home is far beyond me. This noise, I could tell was no respecter of persons and without any delay, erectly I sat at full attention in my dark domain, listen-ing. An ever-pulsating thud could be heard in the far corner, but why? As expected, every tale of a phantasm, ghoul, and goblin came marching into my mind as it would during a parade to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve. Thoughts of everything and anything mischievous or THUD. THUD. THUD - all quiet now. I must think a bit more softly, I wouldn’t in the least find it favorable to be heard at this particu-lar instance.

As I aforementioned, whatever wrong I may have committed prior to this evening came to mind. Almost as though I felt this thudding sound may be due to some mishap on my behalf and my inclined fear was punish-

ment. I promptly tried guessing at the identity of this late-night guest, but to my dismay it remained a mystery.

Upon applying crown-to-pillow, I felt at rest. The noise had been long silent. Maybe my racing mind had drowned out the intrusion. Before I could have one more breath at the cool air from an open window-SLAM! The window hated me and on cue, started up again the dark- cornered entertainment. The window knew, but how? I couldn’t take it anymore.

Nearly 0430 the next day from when I last laid down to sleep and now nearly nothing for sleep to be told. Cold sweat pouring down this thick brow and almost impaling my legs and stomach on its way down from the almost frigid feeling this room had to offer me. I felt the dark corner was in cahoots with the temperature-how silly of me.

I snapped after another quick and deep THUD. I threw back our blankets and stepped over where my wife’s

place was. I shouted! I raved! And even I ranted. “Curse you, you foul, noisy intruder!” “Address yourself at once!”

“Abigail, darling, hand me a match and a candle.” “Abigail!” “Abigail!” “Do you hear me?” With shaken hands, I scrambled amongst the bed-side table.

Aha! I had found what my incompe-tent while napping wife could not. To my shock and dismay, without me in the bed-it was abandoned. It, it must be a bad candle! I licked my ice- cold fingers and smothered the flame.

“Abigail! Again I will ask of you to hand me a candle.”

- Nothing.

I gave life to the candle one time less than the rule of three in theatre-she was not where she should be. The thudding grew louder. To be sure, my head was destined at this point to explode and leave nothing but a

bewildered torso behind.

I discovered that I was in the exact spot where this infernal noise had spawned some two hours prior to all this excitement.

“My wardrobe!” “our wardrobe!” I flung the door open.“Dear God!” “No!” “No!”

Abigail was the intruder. I fell to my knees, tears followed down my pale face immediately. How? I wondered just how this could be. I searched for a note. I knew there had to be one. There’s always a note. No note. As I was being escorted out of my home moments later at day-break, I remem-bered earlier that night before the THUDDING occurred, my only dream had been of an argument that I and my now swinging beloved shared.

I picked another splinter out from up under my fingernail. She had yelled for the Bobbies, but I had acted much, much quicker. Colby Chase

GUN CONTROL LAWSThe Supreme Court declined on Monday to hear two cases chal-lenging gun control laws. Both appeals were brought by the National Rifle Association and sought to expand gun rights for young adults.

The first case challenged a Texas law that prevents most 18 to 20 year olds from carrying con-cealed guns in public. The sec-ond case argued against a 1968 federal law which makes it ille-gal for 18 to 20 year olds to pur-chase handguns from licensed federal firearms dealers. In a petition challenging the federal law on the illegal sale of hand-guns to anyone under age 21, NRA attorneys referred to the court’s landmark 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller.

The court ruled then that the Second Amendment establishes an individual right to firearms to protect life and property, clearing the way for legislation that has made obtaining a gun much easier. The court made no comment in denying the appeals. While it is now legal in fifty states to carry a concealed weapon on private property, the court has yet to address head-on the issue of carrying guns publicly.

Happy Easter!!!
