Construction of Spencer Shops began in 1896, and the new
facility w
as named in honor of the first president of Southern Railw
ay, Sam
uel Spencer.
Southern’s fleet of freight, passenger, and switching locom
otives w
ere all maintained at Spencer Shops. A
large freight car sw
itching yard, a Roundhouse for the daily service of locomotives,
Shop for heavy overhauls, a power house to provide electricity and steam
for the operation, store houses, adm
inistrative offices and a paint shop w
ere all eventually part of the complex.
During its peak, Spencer Shops em
ployed nearly 3,000 people, which directly and indirectly provided m
ost of the jobs for the tow
ns of Spencer, East Spencer and other surrounding Rowan C
ounty comm
unities. Not only
that, the site was an intergral part of the transportation infrastructure for the southeastern U
nited States during the first half of the 20th century.
Spencer Shops, however, w
as a repair yard for steam locom
otives. With the advent of diesel locom
otives, which
could travel farther with far less m
aintenance than steam engines, the shops w
ent into decline. The repair facility closed in 1960, but the classification (freight) yard rem
ained open until the late 1970s.
In September 1977, Southern Railw
ay donated four acres of the site, including three buildings, to the state of N
orth Carolina. A
second donation in 1979 included several additional historic structures and land, eventually leading to the creation of the N
.C. Transportation M
useum.
