Attention members: Another Florida summer month is behind us. We are and will continue to attack weeds throughout the property. We have also completed one of our pre-emergent applications for fall/winter weed control. Our pre-emergent program should help with weed pressure throughout the fall, winter, and next spring and summer. In September we will begin to prep for over-seed. We will lower our height of cut throughout the month in preparation for the winter grass to be seeded. We will be over-seeding Tees, Collars, Fairways, and rough on the Quarry Course. We will not be over-seeding the greens on the Quarry Course. TifEagle is the most durable Bermuda species and is actually one of the best putting surfaces in the game when dormant. We will be able to agronomically manage the TifEagle Greens throughout the winter months to provide the best putting surface to the members. The Ranch and Highlands Courses will have the Tee Tops, Collars, Fairways, and Greens over-seeded. The Par 3’s and Diamond Dunes over-seed will follow suite of the Ranch andHighlands Courses.

Doug Egly, General Manager This is certainly a busy time of the year here at Black Diamond. While many of you are away, we are prepping the courses, the clubhouse and the community for your return. As I am sure you have heard by now, we have started construction on the clubhouse. We are excited about the project and providing a clubhouse that is both functional and comfortable. The end result will be an environment that you will be proud to gather with friends and family to relax after a round, enjoy a quiet dinner or a place to enjoy a drink and watch football. Please come to my office and I can share with you the specific plans for the clubhouse including the color palate, new furnishings and overall design. As you can imagine, a project of this size will interrupt the normal course of business. Food and beverage service will be impacted throughout the process but we will accommodate our members as best we can by using alternative available space including the new patios and the Ladies’ Lounge. We will be asking for your patience during the process and request that you make dining reservations as our revised dining areas will not accommodate the same number of members as the existing dining
room. Please see Member News for more detailed information on when certain areas will be closed. We are all very excited about the plans and providing you with a more modern environment that will be commensurate to our world class golf courses. Speaking of golf courses, we are excited to open the Highlands and believe you will find it in terrific shape. The Quarry is also in wonderful condition and the greens are truly world class. We are closing the Ranch for aerification and will be addressing some of the same diseases that impacted us through the transition. This has been a very difficult year for all the courses in our area and there are still some challenges. See Matt’s notes for his plan to continue to address these issues. For those of you who are here through the summer, my team is thrilled to serve you and for those of you who will be coming back soon, we can’t wait to see you again.

The end of summer is right around the corner and with this comes the beginning of our Major Tournament Schedule in two months.
Black Diamond will host the LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals Southeast Section Team Championship September 30th and October 1st.
Preceding the Pro Am event on Sunday morning, there will be a workshop presented for the professionals on the topic of Golf Fitness. If you’re interested in learning what the pros will be learning, our golf members are invited to attend the workshop. Presented by Karen Palacios-Jansen, “Golf Fitness – Tools and Tips to Motivate Golfers to Move and Swing Better” will touch on “Understanding Human Movement and How it Applies to Golf” and “Developing and Demonstrating Golf-Specific Exercises” including four basic exercise routines that combine golf-specific exercise and motivational techniques that are easy to follow. The workshop will run 8:00 – 11:00am and the cost for Black Diamond members to attend is $50 ($85 for non-members). If you would like more information or to sign up, please stop by the Golf Shop.
Would you be interested in playing in the Pro Am Sunday afternoon? The Sunday afternoon shot gun start will pair two golf professionals with two amateurs in a Best Ball format for eighteen holes. Some of the professionals will be looking for amateur partners and would love a chance to play with some “local knowledge.” Pro Am entry is $100 for Black Diamond members ($150 for non-members) and includes a box lunch, gift, and awards dinner. If you would like to play, please stop by the Golf Shop for a registration form.

is too strong, hands turned too far to the right on the grip, your ball will bend to the left in flight. On the other hand, if you are a golfer who tends to hit the ball generally straight but pushes the ball to the right or pulls the ball to the left then you need to check your alignment, posture and/or ball position. Common flaws with respect to these three fundamentals include, but are not limited to, alignment of your body to the target instead of alignment of your clubface to the target causing you to be lined up too far to the right of your target; your upper body leaning too far towards your target causing the clubhead to swing down to the left of your target; or your ball positioned too far back in your stance which would make your ball fly low to the right of your target. Now this might all sound too simple but the truth is that most errant shots are attributable to incorrect information or improper pre-swing fundamentals rather than some incorrect motion or position within the swing. It is a proper starting position which will provide the best opportunity for your natural swing motion to be effective in sending the ball to your intended target. I hope you find this information helpful and if I can be of assistance with your golf game please give me a call; I would be honored to help you with your swing!
Until then, great golfing everyone!
Ever wonder why your golf shots don’t always go where you intend them to go? Ever been teased with the ball flight of your tee shot that starts heading toward your target and then shamelessly curves off line to the right or left? Well there are basically two reasons for your misfortunes, the path that your clubhead is taking through the ball and the angle of the clubface as the clubhead travels along this path. If you’re like most golfers you are not able to avoid or eliminate these misfortunes for one of two reasons: one or more of your pre-swing fundamentals of grip, posture, ball position or alignment are not correct for the shot you are trying to play or your perception of what you need to change or fix is incorrect. For instance, consider those golfers who slice the ball off to the right. I bet if they were asked what caused the ball to curve off to the right, the path of the clubhead or the angle of the clubface, the majority of golfers would say the path of the clubhead. The average golfer envisions the clubhead swinging across the ball imparting a sideways spin on the ball which they believe makes the ball curve in flight. Well as you have probably guessed by now that is incorrect. The truth is that only a clubface that is open or closed to the actual path of the clubhead makes a ball curve in flight. If the path of the clubhead was across the ball to the left and the clubface was square to that path then the ball would go straight left. You know, the dreaded straight ball, the one that you aimed left of your target that was supposed to curve to the right but didn’t! Well don’t worry; understanding the flight of your golf ball is quite simple if you remember the following phrase: “The swing sends the ball and the clubface bends the ball.” Basically the swinging movement of your club away and through your golf ball towards your target sends the ball in a general direction and the angle of your clubface at the moment of impact bends the ball to the right or left after it leaves the face of your club. Now you’re probably asking what controls the path and angle of the clubhead. Well it is your pre-swing fundamentals of grip, posture, ball position and alignment, with the grip solely responsible for the angle of the clubface at impact and ball position, posture and alignment accountable for the general path of the clubhead relative to the target. If you are a golfer whose ball tends to bend or curve too much in flight you need to check the position of your hands on the club. If your grip is too weak, hands turned too far to the left on the grip, the ball will bend to the right and if your grip

A Note from.... Marie-Anne Salvio, President Here we are in September. The summer is almost gone. We have averted another hurricane (Issac) that turned out to be a tropical storm with a punch. It dropped a lot of rain, but it couldn’t stop Ladies’ Day. Two months ago I stated that I would speak to you again about SWATCA (Southeastern Women’s Amateur Team Championship Association). There are 7 states competing; Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee. This year the tournament is being hosted by Florida and being played at Black Diamond October 22-24, 2012. Two members of the Florida team include members of Black Diamond, Debby Mooksang and Sandie St. Onge. SWATCA has requested volunteers to help with registration on Saturday and Sunday morning, and spotters on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The team also needs support. In the past years when Florida has hosted the tournament we have included in the program a page that is a “Support Team Florida” page. For $10 they will list your name on the page. Our names on that page would show support for the team and help to defray the cost of the tournament. If there are enough donors, they have offered to make a separate page for Black Diamond. Please make your check payable for $10 to “SWATCA” and give it to me or someone in the Golf Shop.

Black Diamond Foundation Assists Citrus County Veterans
Citrus County is “home” to over 24,000 veterans who have served, and still serve, our Nation. That’s 16% of our county population. The Black Diamond Foundation recognized the unique needs of this group in April 2012, donating $5,000 to the Citrus County Veteran’s Foundation, Inc. to help cover emergency expenses for low income veterans and their families. In 2009, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced the federal government’s goal to end veteran homelessness, a significant issue for veterans of all ages, by 2015. To that end, the VA has awarded $160 million in grants over the past two years designed to assist over 64,000 homeless and at-risk veterans and their families. The 2012 grants are going to 151 community agencies, to help VA and community organizations reach out and prevent at-risk veterans from losing their homes. Under the Supportive Services for Veterans Families program, the VA is awarding grants to private, non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives that provide services to very low income veteran families living in – or transitioning to – permanent housing. Community based groups can offer temporary financial assistance on behalf of veterans for rent and utility payments, as well as security deposits and moving costs.
One group supporting our community is the Citrus County Veteran’s Foundation (CCVF). Founded in 2004, the CCVF is a not-for-profit volunteer organization with a mission to provide immediate financial assistance to eligible Citrus County veterans, or their surviving spouses, with urgent cash needs such as rent, utility bills, food and transportation. Since its inception, the CCVF has raised $80,000, distributed to those in need through the Citrus County Veterans Service Officer. One of its primary fund raising events is an annual golf tournament, which the CCVF will host on September 8, 2012, at the Citrus Hills Golf and Country Club. On behalf of our Black Diamond Foundation donors, we were pleased to make an initial contribution to this worthy cause, supporting citizens of Citrus County who volunteered selflessly to protect and preserve our Nation. You may find information about the upcoming CCFV golf tournament, and how to make private donations to support at-risk veterans, on the CCVF website at www:citrusvf.org.

Reading & Discussion
Group
On Thursday September 27th at 4 pm in the board room, the reading group will explore Mormonism after reading “The 19th Wife” by David Ebershoff. This novel intertwines the historical story of the expulsion in 1875 of Anna Eliza, the 19th wife of Brigham Young the prophet and leader of the Mormon Church, and a fictional story set in a polygamous compound in present day Utah of another 19th wife accused of murder. Both stories are combined with newspaper opinion pieces, Wikipedia entries, and academic research papers.
The selection for October will be “Shame the Devil” by Debra Brenegan. For more information contact Faeth Houle.
