BLACK COMPOSERS IN EUROPE: A WORKS LIST

DOMINIQUE-RENE DE LERMA

This is a progress report on the known music by black composers who were resident in Europe by the end of the nineteenth century.1 In- cluded are Amanda Aldridge (a.k.a. Montague Ring), George Augustus Bridgetower, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Justin Elie, Robert and Nicolas Geffrard, Antonio Carlos Gomes, Felipe Gutierrez y Espinosa, Edmund Thornton Jenkins, Ludovic Lamothe, the Chevaliers de Meude-Monpas and de Saint-Georges, Ignatius Sancho, and Jose Silvestre de los Dolores White y Lafitte.

Not included within the present restriction are Basile Bares, Edmund Dede, and members of the Lambert family, whose works are among those previously cited in "Updated Music List: Six Composers of Nine- teenth-Century New Orleans," a supplement to the Center for Black Music Research's Black Music Research Newsletter (vol. 9, no. 1).2 As a result, only one native of the United States-Jenkins-has been in- cluded. Sancho was born in western Africa; Saint-Georges is from Gua- deloupe (although not unjustly claimed by the French); Gutierrez was a native of Puerto Rico (then part of Spain); Bridgetower comes from Po- land; Meude-Monpas presumably was born in France; White was from Cuba; Aldridge and Coleridge-Taylor were British by birth; Gomes was Brazilian; and Robert and Nicholas Geffrard, Lamothe, and Elie were all from Haiti. The European connection for those born elsewhere was ei- ther France, England (or both), or Italy in the case of Gomes and surely that of Gutierrez.

With the geographic criterion, Jose Mauricio Nufies-Garcia is among those not included. Despite the significant contribution he made in the Austro-Italian styles of the early nineteenth century, he remained for his

1. The information given in this listing will be included with materials which, when

completed, will be published in the series The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Black Music (Greenwood Press).

2. The list was reprinted in Black Music Research Journal 10, no. 1 (1990):137-144.

DOMINIQUE-RENE DE LERMA is Associate Director of the Center for Black Music Research. He is the author of Black Music Bibliography (Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 1981-), Black Music in Our Culture (Kent, Ohio: Kent State University Press, 1970), and Reflections on Afro-American Music (Kent, Ohio: Kent State University Press, 1973).

entire life in Brazil. Gutierrez should not have been included if the re- striction is most carefully observed, but we have biographical reason to know he studied in Europe. By not including composers born in the twentieth century, we exclude Amadeo Roldan (1900-1939), although he was born in Paris. Were there a primary reference to "El son de Ma Teodora," the earliest date in this list would be in the late sixteenth cen- tury, and Teodora Gines would have been included.3

Works bearing no imprint information are those which likely exist only in manuscript. The listing includes reference to commercial record-

ings, but not those instantaneously produced which were never openly on sale. Identification of holding libraries of music and their recordings are restricted to public institutions. Many of the published and recorded works are unfortunately no longer readily available. One can only most ardently hope that reissues and new performances will stimulate each other. On a subjective note, this is particularly urged with respect to the works of Gomes and Coleridge-Taylor. It is hoped that performers will be distinctly aggressive in returning to standard repertoire the works of those two composers, which have recently been ignored.

Where appropriate, the elements in these citations are as follows: 1. Title. 2. Medium note. If the work is for an instrumental ensemble, the spe-

cific performance forces are subsequently provided. 3. Date of composition. 4. Name of arranger or editor. 5. Publication data. The city, publisher, and year of publication are

stated. The publication date has not been identified in all instances. In these cases, "n.d. [?]" indicates that the research has not deter- mined the date. If there are two or more dates in descending order, the first date is that of the most recent printing.

6. Collation. The last numbered page is identified, plus plate numbers and series note. Multiple volumes are so noted.

7. Series title and number. 8. Text source. 9. Contents.

10. Duration. 11. Instrumentation is provided, as appropriate, in the manner tradi-

tionally employed in publishers' catalogs (e.g., 2222, 2200 indicates

3. In this regard, I am firmly convinced that many black composers, not from the U.S., were active between the time of the Gines sisters and Justin Elie, and I hope to make yet another visit to European libraries in the near future, searching for support of this belief and attempting to locate other compositions. In addition, there are many works by figures from colonial Brazil to whom attention is proudly being given by their contemporary compatriot scholars and performers.

Chevalier de Saint-Georges, 1749-17994

In brief summary, three circumstances have ascribed to Saint-Georges works that were not his. The brothers Marius, Francis, and Henri Casadesus are known to have published works of their own as being by eighteenth-century figures, including Saint-Georges. These are readily identified by style and programatically picturesque titles. Colorful titles also account for numerous works issued by Augener in particular which were attributed to Saint-Georges, under whose name these were for-

merly entered by a cataloger of the Schomburg Collection. A third cate-

gory indicates how popular the music of this composer was when (about 1795) a London publication of six "canzonets" was issued by "the author" with a dedication to the Baroness de Lockhart, which also con- tains a piano setting of a D major symphony (very likely the work of the Mannheimer Thomas Alexander Erskine, Earl of Kelly [1732-1781] but, on stylistic grounds, certainly not by Saint-Georges). It is also evident that among these works are transcriptions by Saint-Georges of works by others, Vous l'ordonnes being an initial case in point.

4. The year of Saint-Georges's birth, as corrected by Gabriel Banat in this issue, is

hereby acknowledged.
