By now you’ve had the opportunity to look aroundand try to create a credible profile on LinkedIn. Orhave you? Most individuals are so consumed withthe rapid fire succession of posts, likes, and inspira-tional enlightenment mixed with a portion of onlinecat-fights from Facebook that they’ve yet taken thetime to understand LinkedIn and all its potential.

Let’s look at it like this: if you want to watch a bas-ketball game you can visit any park in America and

find a game to watch. The quality of what you see on the court would besemi watchable on a good day. However, if you want to watch a qualityproduction you should probably watch an NBA game. What’s the point?I’m glad you asked! As a business you shouldn’t be placing all of yourefforts in a pick-up game on Facebook. You should be where the profes-sionals are and that’s on LinkedIn.

By and large LinkedIn boasts a more mature and affluent audience. Ac-cording to a data analysis by Quantcast.com, 26% of LinkedIn users arebetween the ages of 18-34, while 70% are aged 35-49 and 50+. If thatdoesn’t get you thinking, 75% of LinkedIn users are college educatedwith 29% making over $60k a year, while 39% are making over $100k

per year. Do you get it yet? Your friends are on Facebook, but your custom-ers are on LinkedIn!

Statistically if you are employable or in business for yourself the best placefor you to spend your time would be on a network such as LinkedIn, but forall of the traditional reasons African-Americans are underrepresented on thesite compared to the averages of African-American internet users.

So what should you do? I invite you to go where the professionals are mak-ing an impact. Update your LinkedIn photo, join a few groups, and writeyour profile in first person perspective. These three things will increaseyour visibility in your current market by not appearing to be a sleeping re-sume. Engage and interact, because your professional life depends on it!

Christopher S. Dennis is the Principal Consultant with GAB Brands, LLC inMoreno Valley, CA. He also serves as the Regional Manager of A BetterChance, INC as well as the Inland Empire Coordinator of the NationalBlack MBA Association Los Angeles Chapter (LABMBAA). For more in-formation visit www.christophersdennis.com.

What is AVID & How Could It Help Your Child? Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), is a college readiness system for elementary through secondary education that was developed by MaryCatherine Swanson in 1980 in San Diego CA. The program is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The AVID College ReadinessSystem (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professionallearning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.

The AVID Elective includes development of study skills, tutoring in collaborative study groups, and a curriculum focused on reading and writing forlearning.  Training strands are offered for administrators, counselors, AVID Elective teachers, tutors, and teachers of English, history, mathematics, science, and world languages. School wide site teams meet to discuss the teaching practices that are most helpful for student learning.  Participatingteachers design lessons around the methodologies, share them, pilot them, and refine them for school wide use.  Teachers visit the AVID class to see thepractices in action and AVID tutors are sent school wide to assist subject area teachers in utilizing the methods.

By 1986 AVID was incorporated into all secondary schools in San Diego County.  In 1989, Ramona High School in Riverside became the first schooloutside of San Diego County to adopt the program, which is now adopted worldwide.  This successful program is integral to the successful acceptance intouniversities and colleges of thousands of low-income/at risk students annually.  However, many student athletes are left out of the equation due to apropensity for taking classes that will insure a grade point average that will enable them to remain eligible to participate on sports teams and ineligible forcollege entrance.  There is no reason why schools, with careful forethought and planning cannot support student-athletes in the AVID program. MorenoValley Unified School District has developed an AVID strand for athletes.  Other Inland Empire school districts should be encouraged to do the same.

The Moreno Valley College Upward Bound Math & Science Program is afederally funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The Upward Bound Math & Science Program (UBMS) is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students.  *   By 2018, STEM occupations will account for about 8.6 million jobs

The advantage of student participation:

 *   6-Week Interactive Summer Experience *   Academic Advising *   Academic Support and Tutoring *   Access to Computer Lab *   Assistance in completing college, financial aid and scholarship applications *   Career exploration and aptitude assessment *   College exploration and field trips *   Educational and cultural outings *   Exclusive academic preparedness, leadership development and student development opportunities *   Exposure to research and internship opportunities *   Family Workshops *   Hands-on/Interactive STEM Activities *   Individualized Support *   Information on Financial Aid and Economic Literacy *   Mentoring *   SAT/ACT/Test Prep *   Tutoring *   Writing Assistance
