PROGRAM NOTES
A Bell Carol (2007) is a festive opener selection that incorporates the melody of Joy to the World throughout the piano accompaniment. This evening’s performance is enhanced by actual handbells played by our guest artist Mr. Kent Robbins. Go Tell It on the Mountain (2012) is a well-loved Christmas spiritual that has been set by literally hundreds of composers and arrangers. The text of the song talks proclaims the birth of the Savior. Unlike many other arrangements of this piece, listeners will also be entertained by a lively, bright piano accompaniment. Holy is the Newborn Child (2001) is another Christmas spiritual arranged by arranger John Carter. The message in this piece talks about the new born child and the circumstances of His birth. Christmas…in about Three Minutes (2002) contains portions of some of the world’s most beloved Christmas songs. You will be amazed at the number of Christmas songs that can be sung in just three minutes. Can you count the number of familiar melodies you hear sung and/or played in the piano part? Hint: there are more than 20!Bring a Torch Jeannette Isabella (2013) is a 16th century French carol. The song was not originally a Christmas carol, but dance music for the nobility. The text of the song talks about how visitors to the stable had to keep their voices down as to not wake the baby Jesus. Breath of Heaven (Mary’s Song) (1997) Very few artists have attempted to express the private and vulnerable thoughts of the Virgin Mary as she traveled to Bethlehem so great with child. This intensely beautiful song by recording artist Amy Grant opens our hearts to what Mary may have prayed to her heavenly Father in the days prior to Christ's birth. Its message is so powerful, and the music so expressive, that it can only be conveyed by the human voice.Up Above My Head (2012) is an acappella gospel spiritual written in a call response style where one group responses to a leader. The piece is only accompanied by percussion which gives it a unique feel. The melody is very upbeat and catchy and is echoed throughout the entire song. Christmas, Baby Please Come Home (2008) is a 1963 Christmas song originally recorded by Darlene Love. It has been a perennial favorite and has been covered by dozens of artists, most famously by U2 on the 1987 A Very Special Christmas compilation album. The song brings heartfelt emotion and a swingin' rock 'n' roll groove. Ding Dong Merrily on High (1989) combines the French carol Ding Dong Merrily on High with the English carol Good King Wenceslas. During Medieval times a carol was known as a round or dance with musical accompaniment. Today a carol is known as a song that celebrates this season of Christmas. Carol of the Bells (1936) also known as the Ukrainian Bell Carol, was written by the composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych for a Christmas concert by students at the University of Kiev. The bell carol, originally part of a choral work titled Schedryk, was inspired by the traditional Ukrainian legend that all of the bells on earth rang of their own accord to announce the birth of Christ. The most familiar version of this work is a 1936 adaptation with English words by Peter J. Wilhousky. In the Bleak Midwinter (2013) is an English Christmas carol based on a poem by Christina Rossetti. Gustav Holst is responsible for the original setting of the piece in 1906. In 2008 the song In the Bleak Midwinter was named best carol in a choirmaster’s poll. Mary Had a Baby with Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee (2003) is an exciting, upbeat a cappella setting of the traditional spiritual which uses Beethoven's ever-popular Ode to Joy theme from his Ninth Symphony, with new seasonal lyrics. Listen for the imitation of the train in the various voice parts. Jesus! Oh What a Wonderful Child (2007) is a Christmas gospel song arranged by Mark Hayes. The piece features several soloists and several modulations to higher tonal centers. The piece is both energetic and uplifting and will leave you humming along and clapping in celebration!
