Islamabad must ensure that internationally-designated terrorists do not find space in Pakistan for their activities, India said today, after Hizbul Mujahideen's Syed Salahuddin, designated a global terrorist by the US last week, boasted in a television interview that his outfit has carried out terror attacks in India. Salahuddin, who operates out of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, openly exposed Pakistan's role in terror attacks in India when he told Paki- stani channel Geo TV that he "can strike anytime, anywhere in India." He said it was easy for him to get weapons in Pakistan for these terror strikes. "The brazen admission by Syed Salahuddin of perpetrating terrorist attacks on India and having the capacity to carry out such attacks at any place and time in India is a further proof of Pakistan's continuing policy of cross border terrorism. His confession... also affirms the complicity of Pakistan's state structure in using terrorist proxies as a matter of policy against the neighbours," a foreign ministry spokes- person said in a statement. "It is a matter of deep regret that senior Pakistan functionaries con- tinue to justify and defend the activities of such internationally desig- nated terrorist entities and leaders who are responsible for killing thousands of innocent civilians over the past three decades," it added. Salahuddin, 71, was declared a specially designated global terrorist by the US Department of State last week, hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Donald Trump at the White House. A US statement noted that, "In September 2016, Salahuddin vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir Val- ley "into a graveyard for Indian forces"." Responding to the order, India had said, "It does vindicate India's longest-standing position that cross-border terrorism is behind disturbance created in Kashmir since last year. The outfits that Syed Salahuddin leads, they have perpetuated, from the territory of Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, cross-border terrorism against India including in Kashmir for a number of years." TORONTO - Canada is a country made up of a cultural mosaic ofimmigrants that is strengthened by the diversity they bring with them.Globally known as the desired land of immigration, Canada has beenhome to more than 17 millionimmigrants since 18671 and in 2016alone Canada welcomed over 300,000 new comers to the country2.However, immigrants and their children when settling into a newcountry face their life's greatest challenge. Immigrant parents' primeconcerns are issues related to raising their children in a new andunfamiliar environment like maintaining cultural heritage, adjustingin school and cultural dynamics, living a healthy lifestyle, and ac-cessing community and government resources. Through all thesechallenges, what binds every immigrant is one common goal; to bean effective parent and give their children the best.In view of the challenges and big information gap, today at a mediaconference held at the Pride of Canada Carousel in Markham, a newparenting community hub called ParentConnectTM was announcedand its first event Parenting Expo 2017 will be held on October 21 and22 in the York Region. The event is expected to draw thousands ofnew parents and immigrant families in the GTA, York Region andneighbourhood regions.

"The ParentConnectTM platform is created with the objective to offernew and immigrant parents a collaborative hub to access resourcefulinformation and links to service providers to guide them on providingtheir children with a positive upbringing through positive parenting,"said Loret ta Lam, Founder ofParentConnectTM(www.ParentConnect.ca). Being an immigrant anda parent, Loretta echoes the stress that many parents face these daysbetween raising a family and building a successful career. She stronglybelieves society can benefit from positive parenting and every parentcan use a little help and resources from peers and exper ts.In such community as the York Region, by 2031, 55% of the region'sresidents will be immigrants and 62% will be visible minorities3.With 72% of people living in Markham identified as a visible minority, almost 26% are between the ages of 20-394. This cohor t is likelybuying their first homes and is star ting families. Many of these vis-ible minorities are the 1.5 and second generation of immigrant fami-lies from the 70s and 80s. These millennials and Gen X, on the otherhand, face intense challenges on raising their children and pursuinggenerational and cultural harmony between their parents' expecta-tions and the culture they grew up in.

For Modi, the real test will be taming 'gau rakshaks'BY AMULYA GANGULI

TRUMP TIMES: TRUMODI BROMANCEBLIPS IN LA-LA LAND!

A year ago, the Prime Minister had admonished the gau rakshaks(cow vigilantes) in no uncer tain terms. He did so again last Thursday, but even as he was speaking a mob was killing a man suspected ofcarrying beef in Jharkhand, which is ruled by the Bharatiya JanataPar ty (BJP).It will obviously take much more than an occasional condemnation tobring under control the murderous fanatics of the Hindu Right. Thereason is the ingrained animosity of these groups towards Muslimswho are mostly associated with eating beef. Since this bias has beeninstilled in them over decades by the Sangh Parivar led by the RashtriyaSwayamsevak Sangh (RSS), it will be futile to expect an overnightchange of hear t.Never theless, Narendra Modi should be complimented for taking upcudgels against them. No one else either inside or outside the BJPcould have done so. It is not impossible that his castigation of the gaurakshaks will turn a not inconsiderable section of the Parivar againsthim, thereby damaging the BJP's electoral prospects. But Modi doesn'tseem to have any hesitation in following a path different from the onefavoured by the hardliners in the saffron brotherhood. While the latterwants the establishment of a Hindu 'rashtra' (nation) now that 1,200years of "slavery" under the Muslims and the British have come to anend, Modi wants to take India forward as a modern country with avibrant economy. But this objective cannot be achieved if the country remains in thegrip of lawless groups bent on lynching those who do not share theirreverence for the cow. Considering that Modi has succeeded in check-ing some of the excesses of the Hindu fundamentalists like arrangingfor 'ghar wapsi' - or the return of Muslims to their "original" faith ofHinduism - or opposing inter-faith marriages via their 'love jihad'propaganda, it is possible that he will be able to rein in the gau rakshaksas well. But, unlike the two other "programmes" of the fanatics, controlling thecow vigilantes will be much more difficult because their rampagesrelate to the cow, a longstanding emblem of Hinduism in the eyes ofthe animal's worshippers who believe that it exhales oxygen and thatits urine has therapeutic value. An effor t to restrain them, therefore,

will be a real test for Modi, much more than the rolling out of theGoods and Services Tax or inviting foreign investment or popularisinggenetically modified food.If he fails, there is little doubt that the halo surrounding his personawill be vastly diminished not only among the "not in my name" hashtagbrigade of the urban middle class but also among the less privilegedcommunities. These include the Dalits, who have been alienated bythe suicide of a bright young scholar in Hyderabad, the lynching of agroup skinning a cow in Gujarat, and the clashes with high-casteThakurs in Saharanpur, UP.On the other hand, if the Prime Minister succeeds -- if only becausethe police will now be far more active in apprehending the Hinduzealots -- Modi's image will receive a tremendous boost. But even ashe gains among the people at large, the impact of restraining the gaurakshaks -- one of whom was compared with Bhagat Singh by asaffron sadhvi in Rajasthan -- on the Parivar diehards remains un-clear.Although the RSS has warned the Hindutva activists against takingthe law into their own hands, the reactions of the more belligerentVishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Bajrang Dal and other groups like

the Ram Sene, the Hindu Sena and the Hindu Mahasabha cannot butbe less restrained. For them, any administrative action against thegau rakshaks will be a betrayal of the Hindutva cause, which willbring the BJP in line with the "sickular", anti-Hindu, anti-national Con-gress and the left-liberals.It is too early to say whether the saffron camp will split, but it goeswithout saying that for outfits like the VHP, it will be vir tually mean-ingless to remain a par t of the Parivar when their cherished hopes arereceding fur ther into the distance. In India, another regimented group, the communists, splintered into many factions because they couldnot establish their beloved dictatorship of the proletariat via an armedrevolution. Does a similar fate await the votaries of Hindu rashtra? The country will however see a major transformation of the politicalscene if no more lynchings or murders take place in the name of thecow. The BJP can then look forward to any easy victory in 2019. Onthe other hand, more venomous targeting of Muslims will be ruinousfor Modi's reputation as a strong leader and energise his opponentsas never before. Either way, the holy cow will be playing a seminalrole in the country's social and political scene to the amazement ofthe rest of the world.

BY ARUN KUMAR

He came, he saw, he hugged and hugged again, but he couldn'tconquer the Russia obsessed Yankee media. Narendra Modi'sbudding bromance with Donald Trump could not bloom on the idiotbox. The Indian Prime Minister's first marathon summit with POTUSwas just a blip on the tube. And on the morrow, it could not makethe front page of any mainstream daily from the West to East Coast. To be sure, pundits and prophets from Washington Post to New YorkTimes did pontificate on the 'TruModi bromance.' But only theconservative Washington Times carried a picture of Modi and thefirst couple on the front page. No surprises there. For unlikeGandhi's three monkeys who saw no evil, heard no evil and said noevil, they have their eyes and ears for only one evil - Vladimir Putinand his ever lengthening shadow on American politics.Foiled by Trump and Modi refusing to take the customary twoquestions from each side after their Rose Garden statements, thechatterati quickly switched to complaining and moaning about thelack of transparency in this White House. A repor ter anyway did loba question at the retreating pair - not about India-US relations, buton the travails of "Trumpcare" to replace "Obamacare." A CNNrepor ter said he wanted to ask Modi about the Supreme Cour treviving Trump's "Muslim travel ban" as India has over a 100million Muslim population. He like other Trump baiters ignored the fact that the so-called banonly calls for a 90 day suspension of travel from six terror-pronecountries in the Middle East identified as such by the previousObama administration. This on the day three CNN repor ters andeditors were forced to resign after retracting an anonymoussourced story suggesting a Senate team was probing a linkbetween a Trump associate and a Russian investment fundexecutive."So they caught Fake News CNN cold," a gloating Trump tweeted."But what about NBC, CBS & ABC? What about the failing @nytimes& @washingtonpost? They are all Fake News!" he asked brandingthe "The Gray Lady" of New York "A Fake News Joke!" The WhiteHouse also encouraged media to watch a couple of sting videosfilmed by conservative outlet Project Veritas showing a CNNproducer admitting that the channel was hyping 'mostly bullshit'Trump-Russia scandal for 'ratings.'In another video, CNN political commentator and host Van Jones isseen saying "The Russia thing is just a big nothing burger." CNNwas quick to dismiss it as a "hoax" only to have Jones sheepishlyadmit that he did say those words and lamely suggest it wasaddressed to 'progressives' nursing a false hope that the Russiaprobe would lead to Trump's impeachment. And as press andpoliticians continued their Russia tirade, Trump deftly turned thetables using a Post story to lash out at his predecessor for "chok-ing" over Russian meddling. "Why didn't he do something about it?"he demanded.CNN among others painted it as Trump's admission that the"Russians did it" while suggesting that the President's "ownadvisers are struggling to convince him that Russia still poses athreat. Scoop and scandal" oriented liberal news site The DailyBeast floated another story about European spies being worried that

"ex-spy master" Putin "can extract major concessions" from Trumpwhen they meet at the G-20 summit next week. Meanwhile, MSNBC"Morning Joe" co-host Mika Brzezinski provided Trump anotherhandle by accusing him of "bullying, lying or undermining manag-ers." Such "abnormal behaviour," by a business executive, shesuggested, may raise concerns that he was "perhaps out of hismind."The retribution from the POTUS was quick. Taunting her as "Low I.Q.Crazy Mika" he claimed that she "along with Psycho Joe" had"insisted on joining me" at his Florida resor t last winter when "shewas bleeding badly from a face-lift." As a storm broke out withlawmakers and media chastising Trump for his "misogynistic"tweeting instead of minding the nation's business, the House passedtwo tough measures against illegal immigrants.Brzezinski herself found it "unbelievably alarming" that this Presi-dent with 'childlike ego' is so easily played." But with the conversa-tion turning away from Trumpcare, Muslim ban and even Russia fora while, the question was who is playing whom!

HC GRANTS BAIL TO 1984 ANTI-SIKH RIOTS CASE CONVICTNEW DELHI, (PTI) The Delhi High Court today granted bail on medical grounds to an 89-year-old convictserving life term in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. A vacation bench of Justices Manmohan and YogeshKhanna released retired naval officer Captain Bhagmal on bail till July four on the ground that he has to

undergo a surgery. The cour t granted him the relief till July four instead of three months sought by theconvict, so that the bench which is hearing the anti-Sikh riots cases can take a final decision on his plea."A prayer is made for suspension of sentence for three months. In view of the circumstances placedbefore us, the sentence of the appellant is suspended till July 4," the bench said in its interim order. The convict is already on interim bail since March 24 on medical grounds. Bhagmal, through his counsel, had stated that he is suffering from enlarged prostrate for which he has to undergo surgery which wouldrequire stay in the hospital. Taking note of his medical condition, the bench extended his bail on furnishingof a personal bond of Rs 25,000 with one surety of the like amount. It directed Bhagmal to give the address at which he would be available and the mobile number on whichhe can be contacted by the CBI during the interim suspension of his sentence. The bench asked the convictnot to get in touch with any witness or the legal heirs of the deceased. "In case, there is a violation of thiscondition, it will be open to the CBI to move an application for recall of this order," it said, adding thatBhagmal shall not leave the National Capital Territory of Delhi without its permission. Bhagmal, formerCongress councillor Balwan Khokhar, Girdhari Lal and two others were held guilty in a case relating to the murder of fivemembers of a family in Raj Nagar area of Delhi Cantonment on November 1, 1984, after the assassination of Prime MinisterIndira Gandhi. They had challenged their conviction and the sentence awarded by the trial cour t in May2013. The trial cour t had acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar but awarded life term to Bhagmal,Khokhar and Girdhari Lal and three-year jail term to two others former MLA Mahender Yadav andKishan Khokhar. The convicts have filed appeals before the High Cour t while CBI too has filed anappeal alleging that they were engaged in "a planned communal riot" and "religious cleansing". The agency has alsoappealed against acquittal of Kumar. The high court had on March 29 this year issued show cause notices to 11 accusedincluding Khokhar and Yadav in five 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases. The accused, who were acquitted of thecharges, were asked why should the cour t not order reinvestigation and retrial against them as they facedallegations of "horrifying crimes against humanity". The bench had issued notices on the complaints filedregarding the violent incidents on November 1 and 2, 1984 in the Delhi Cantonment area.

So here is a little secret that most insurance companies will not discuss with clients. The conceptannuities, is basically a contrast idea of Life Insurance. Life insurance pays for a prematuredeath and an annuity pays for longevity. Clients pay an annually premium to have the security

of a lump sum in case of a death. However, under an annuity, client would exchange a lump sum andreceive a guaranteed income for life. The need for life insurance is to protect a young family in case of a death and an annuity will giveyou an income if you live long and are concerned about having sufficient income for life. There aremany factors today that give rise to an insecurity of not having enough income to last through outyour lifetime such as advancement in science, longevity, low interest rates, demographics of ourcurrent labour force. However the concept of an insured annuity takes care of all these concerns. So to understand this concept a bit fur ther lets look at an example. Client Mr. Smith buys a lifeinsurance policy for one million dollars at his age 45. Pays about 25% of his death benefit as hispremium to pay off this policy in 20 years. So client's investment was 250K aproximately into his 1Million dollar life policy which increases in value as Mr. Smith lives beyond his age 65. If he livesup to a life expectancy of 85, this policy is not wor th 2.5 million so really the cost of his life policybased on this example was really 10% (2.5mill/250K).When Mr. Smith retires, he has about one million dollars in his registered and 500K in his non-registered account. With this 1.5 mill, Mr. Smith can buy an annuity for half this amount (you are notadvised to buy annuity of all retirement value available) and receive a guaranteed income of around42,000/year (depending on the prevailing interest rate) for the rest of his life. Annuities will not stoppaying until the last day and if it is a joint annuity, for a nominal cost it will pay till the last day ofsurviving spouse. When Mr. Smith passes, his life insurance will pay out a tax free amount of 2.5Million. So by investing the right amount at the right time into these two tax efficient products, Mr.

Smith is able to have his cake of 2.5mill and enjoy the fullvalue of his retirement savings while he is alive with

gua ran teed i ncome to p ro tec t f rom a l l r i sks(Longevity, interest rates, economy etc.)In this case, Mr. Smith may even benefit fromhaving a blended income of registered and nonregistered to reduce his tax bracket. So passingon wealth to his next generation is easy throughthis planning of Insured Annuity. However, oneth ing you need to p l an ea r l y i s l i f e buyinsurance when you are young and healthyotherwise you may be a deselected risk for aninsurance company. Also, while planning you willhave to work with two separate companies astaking both death and longevity r isk for an

insurance company may not match their riskappetite as this may turn into a no gain

concept for the insurer. For many other such financial planningstrategies, please do not hesitate andcontact us immediate ly atwww.WEFCI.com or by calling SeemaSharma, MBA, CFP, CLU, CHS at647-9689334.

"India once again requests Pakistan for the early release and repatria-tion of Indian prisoners, missing Indian defence personnel and fishermenalong with their boats whose nationality has been confirmed by India," itstated.Jadhav was allegedly arrested from Pakistan's restive Balochistan provinceon March 3, 2016. Pakistan claimed that the former Indian Navy officerconfessed in a video that he was involved in spying and terror activities inBalochistan, a charge rejected by India. He was convicted in April by aPakistani military court and sentenced to death. India has maintained thatJadhav was abducted from Iran, where he was pursuing his business, andpassed off as a spy. In May this year, India moved the International Court of

Justice at The Hague, which then stayed the execution pending a final deci-sion by the court. Ansari, an engineer and business professional, had gone toKabul in Afghanistan on November 4, 2012, on a tourist visa for a job inaviation. He entered Pakistan on November 12.From his e-mail accounts, it was revealed that he was in touch with aPakistani girl on Facebook and had gone to Pakistan, where he was arrestedand sentenced to three years in jail. According to the ministry statement, inline with an agreement signed in 2008, India and Pakistan on Saturday ex-changed, through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi andIslamabad, the lists of nationals - including civil prisoners and fishermen - ofeach country lodged in the jails of the other country. The Agreement onConsular Access between India and Pakistan, which was signed on May 21,2008, provides that a comprehensive list of nationals of each country lodgedin the other country's jails has to be exchanged twice each year, on January1 and July 1. "India remains committed to addressing on priority all humani-tarian matters with Pakistan, including those pertaining to prisoners andfishermen," the statement said. "In this context, we await from Pakistanconfirmation of nationality of those in India's custody who are otherwiseeligible for release and repatriation."

Chidambaram attacks GST in its presentform, says it will lead to inflation

KARAIKUDI (TAMIL NADU), (IANS) In a scathing attack on the Goods andServices Tax (GST) in its current form, senior Congress leader and formerFinance Minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday said it will put a burden on thecommon man and hugely affect small, medium and micro businesses andentrepreneurs while being inflationary with multiple rates. The anti-profiteer-ing provision in the new law will be an instrument of harassment in the handsof officials, he told a press conference here.Chidambaram said 80 per cent of all goods and services will bear a tax andprices will be higher. "There will be inflation. What is the government going todo about it?" he asked. He said small, medium and micro scale entrepre-neurs and traders will be affected in a "big" way because they are not readyfor the roll out of the new law. "They asked for more time. They have beendenied time," he said. Chidambaram said a "peculiar arrangement" has beenmade in the name of compromise and the law was being hastily imple-mented while the traders and business wanted some more time becausethey were not prepared for it yet. The consequences of the new law will be

known only after some time, he added. "This not the real GST that the Con-gress had desired and the ideal GST devised by experts. Nothing can be aworse legislation than this," he said. Chidambaram said the UPA governmenthad done all the homework for the law and at that time the BJP had bitterlyopposed it. "The same BJP, when in opposition, had protested against the GSTtooth and nail. No one can deny this fact," he said. He said ideally GST meantone tax and the Congress had accepted the concept of a standard rate of 15per cent along with a standard plus or standard minus rate. "We had said atany rate the tax cannot be beyond 18 per cent. We also accept the fact thatthere cannot be one tax rate in view of the current economic situation."Chidambaram, who had included the GST proposal in the Union Budget forthe first time when he was Finance Minister, said against the concept of onerate, there are multiple rates now - zero per cent, 2.5 per cent, 3 per cent, 5 percent, 15 per cent, 18 per cent, 28 per cent and 40 per cent. "It is still far awayfrom being a GST. It is still not GST," he said, adding that even the ChiefEconomic Adviser has favoured only a 15 per cent rate.

I am a fighter and I will fight and Iam sure that many will join me in thisfight," she said in response to a ques-tion whether she was being made ascapegoat in the presidential election.Union minister and Republican Party ofIndia (RPI) leader Ramdas Athawalehad yesterday took a jibe at the Con-

Kumar, a former Lok Sabhaspeaker and the daughter of iconic Dalitleader Jagjivan Ram, was speaking toreporters after meeting the CongressMPs and MLAs at the KarnatakaPradesh Congress Committee officehere. Seventeen opposition par tieshave fielded Kumar as their jointcandidate in the president ia lelect ion against NDA's nomi-nee Ram Nath Kovind. To a questionon her not having the support of enoughlawmakers, Kumar said she was fight-ing the poll on values and prin-ciples which were "sacred" tothe people of the country. "Wher-

US -Pakistan relations - What is the Future ?CONTD. FROM PAGE 1Ex-CIA contractor RaymondDavis' recently-published book,"The Contractor: How I Landed ina Pakistani Prison and Ignited aDiplomatic Crisis," has caused anuproar in Pakistan and angeredthe country's security and intelli-gence officials. Davis , who wasarrested on the charges of mur-dering two Pakistani citizens dur-ing a shoot-out in the eastern cityof Lahore, narrates the story ofhis detention and subsequent re-lease from prison, alleging thatPakistan's then spy chief ShujaPasha facil itated his acquittalfrom a cour t case.Davis had spent seven weeks ina Pakistani jail and his case trig-gered a serious diplomatic crisisbetween Islamabad and Washing-ton. Religious groups in Pakistanhad demanded a death penalty forDavis and the public opinion backthen was also in favor of a propertrial against the former CIA con-tractor. But then all of a suddenDavis was freed under the Is-lamic law of qisas and diyat(blood money for the victims'families). In his memoir, Davisclaims that the military's Inter-Services Intell igence (ISI) or-chestrated his exit."Several guards led me out of thecour troom through a back en-trance. … One of the men openedthe door, stepped out into a cour t-yard, and scanned the horizon …once he'd cleared the area, I waswaved through door and directedto the SUV idling in the courtyard,"Davis says."Pasha (then ISI chief) under-stood how impor tant it was - forboth sides - to get me out of Paki-stan as soon as possible, but likehis country's president and primeminister, he was happy to let meremain in jail until an acceptablesolution to this increasingly vex-ing problem could be found,"Davis continues.Davis' book has created a politi-cal storm in the Islamic country,

mainly because it "exposes" therole of the ISI in his release. Anti-American sentiment runs high inPakistan, and many exper ts saythe Pakistani army allows it forstrategic reasons. But the accu-sations that the army itself al-lowed a CIA operative accused ofmurdering Pakistani citizens toleave the country have embar-rassed the military. In the after-math of Davis' release in 2011,pro-army political commentatorswere critical of former PresidentAsif Al i Zardar i and hisgovernment 's a l leged role inDavis' acquittal. Both politiciansand intelligence agencies playeda role in Davis' release and de-par ture from Pakistan.Raymond Davis' saga throws intolight the complex ties between theCIA and the ISI, their long historyof collaboration and the ups anddowns during the course of 70years since Pakistan's indepen-dence from British rule in 1947.The two agencies closely col-laborated during the 1980s Af-ghan war, in which themujahideen (Islamic warriors)were given support to fight againstthe Soviet occupation of the coun-try. That is when the ties betweenCIA and ISI strengthened. After thewithdrawal of Soviet troops fromAfghanistan, the two spy agenciescontinued to work together onsecurity matters, but US interest

in the region had already sub-sided. The September 11, 2001attacks in the US and the subse-quent US invasion of Afghanistanto over throw the Taliban regimereinvigorated relations, but thedynamics of the CIA-ISI par tner-ship were quite different this timearound, as Pakistan's then mili-tary dictator Pervez Musharraf, despite agreeing to help Wash-ington in Afghanistan, didn't wagean all-out war against al Qaedaand the Taliban. The unilateral US raid in the Paki-stani city of Abbottabad in May2011 and the subsequent killingof the former al Qaeda leader Osamabin Laden brought the CIA-ISI ties on thebrink of a collapse."Since the US-Pakistan relationship isdriven by security relations, the secu-rity institutions dominate relations. Thismeans that CIA-ISI relations tend to mir-ror the state of the relationship on thewhole," says Michael Kugelman,a senior associate for South andSoutheast Asia at the Washing-ton-based Woodrow Wilson Cen-ter for Scholars. "In 2011-12, forexample, the CIA-ISI relationshipwas in a bad state at a momentwhen US-Pakistan relations werein deep cr is is," he added.Kugelman says the CIA-ISI rela-tions are not as robust as theywere previously because the re-lat ionship on the whole hastaken a plunge.

"All the crises of 2011-12 in therelationship were also crises forthe intelligence agencies - notjust Davis but also the bin Ladenraid for example. All these crisesfrom that time took a toll on therelat ionship between the spyagencies. As a result, relationstoday aren't what they used to be,"he underlined. As to whether theISI's anger at Raymond Davis'memoir was aimed at pacifyingthe Pakistani people or a reflec-t ion of the agency's pol icy,Kugelman said it was "a bit ofboth." "Cer tainly you score pointsin the cour t of public opinion whenyou cater to Pakistan's wide-spread anti-Americanism. At thesame time, the ISI was genuinelyfurious with the CIA after theDavis affair, and many CIA per-sonnel were effectively expelledfrom Pakistan. The CIA presencetoday hasn't come close to ap-proaching its levels from beforethe Davis affair."Experts say that US-Pakistani re-lations are unlikely to improve inthe foreseeable future. PresidentDonald Trump's speech during hisSaudi Arabia visit in May made it clearthat he sees Pakistan more as a prob-lem than a solution regarding US inter-ests in South Asia. Not only Trump didn'tmention Pakistan as a "frontline state"in the war against terror, he supportedPakistan's arch-rival India's narrativeabout Islamic terrorism in the region."The US doesn't need Pakistan'shelp in Afghanistan anymore. Inthe past, it needed us to topplethe Taliban regime in Afghanistan;later i t wanted Is lamabad toeliminate the extremist group. ButPakistan cont inued with i ts'double game' (providing suppor tto the Taliban while receiving USaid)," says analyst Khalid JavedJan . Amid the prevailing climateof mutual distrust as well as thedissonance in their strategic aimsand imperatives, the future tra-jectory of the CIA-ISI par tnershipappears riddled with dauntingchallenges.

ANKARA, (AFP) President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today ac-cused Turkey's main opposition par ty of siding with terrorism,as a three-week "march for justice" led by its chief neared itsending point of Istanbul. Some analysts have seen the 450-kilometre trek from Ankara to Istanbul led by RepublicanPeople's Par ty (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu as a signifi-cant challenge to Erdogan but the Turkish strongman has re-garded it with disdain. Kilicdaroglu began the march on June15 after former journalist turned CHP lawmaker Enis Berberogluwas sentenced to 25 years in jail for leaking classified infor-mation to a newspaper. Marching without party insignia and simply asign with the word "justice" in Turkish, he has been followed by thousandsevery day and plans to end the march on July 9 with a mass rally outsideBerberoglu's prison in the Istanbul district of Maltepe. "If you start proteststo protect terrorists and those who support terrorism -- when it did notoccur to you to take part in anti-terror demonstrations -- then you cannotconvince anyone that your objective is justice," Erdogan said. The presi-dent told a meeting of his ruling party that the line represented by the CHP"had gone beyond being a political opposition and taken on a differentproportion." Accusing the CHP of sympathising with Kurdish militants andthe alleged mastermind of the July 15 failed coup, he said the road taken byKilicdaroglu was "the way to Qandil and Pennsylvania". The leadership ofthe outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) is based in the Qandil moun-tain of northern Iraq while the alleged coup mastermind, the preacherFethullah Gulen, is based in Pennsylvania. He denies the allegations. Themarch by Kilicdaroglu has rallied supporters concerned by the extent ofthe crackdown after the coup which has seen tens of thousands arrestedand even more lose their jobs. The opposition leader was todaywalking through the Akyazi district of Sakarya province on day17 of the march, heading towards the town of Sakarya fromwhere he will have a walk of around 150 kilometres to Istanbul.
