The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in Septem-ber. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Ro-scarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car. Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cor-tina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a dec-ade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and drive-ways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

try both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.” The Cortina Club of Ireland which has over 100 members around the country was set up in 1995 and gives an opportunity for dedicated enthusiasts to get together, display their cars and share views, technical advice and spare parts. Speaking about his love of the car, Treasurer with the Cortina Club of Ireland, John Noel Cronin of Mallow says: “I used to own a Mark I Cortina in the 1970s and the beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on. Just about eve-ry mechanical part in it unbolts and, with a little confidence, one can turn the saddest of Cortinas into a roadworthy classic.” Originally conceived as a replacement for the Ford Con-sul in 1962, the car ceased production in 1982 when it was replaced by the Ford Sierra. The car was named after the chic Italian Al-pine ski resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina was produced in

five variants (Mark I through V) and in motorsport, Cortina was a hugely successful nameplate during the 1960s and into the 1970s.TG4 has made a programme about the 50th anniversa-ry of the Cortina that will be screened during December.

FORD CORTINA: AN ICON TURNS 50

“For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a com-mon sight on our streets and driveways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the country both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.”

Ferris & Dowds Call For World Heritage Status For GlendaloughLabour TDs Anne Ferris and Robert Dowds have called for the Government to press the case for Glendalough to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as soon as possible. With a rich cultural his-tory stretching back nearly 1,500 years and visits from thousands of tourists each year, Glendalough is a unique place which is worthy of being inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Anne Ferris said: “The people of Wicklow are very proud to have such a unique and beautiful attraction as Glendal-ough in our own county. I feel very strongly that the Government should press the case as strongly as possible for Glendalough to be made a UN-ESCO World Heritage Site in the near future. I have examined the criteria by which the World Heritage Committee determine whether a site can be designated and there is no doubt that Glen-dalough would comfortably fulfil the criteria. “We currently have only three other World Heritage Sites on the island in Brú na Bóinne, the Giant’s Causeway and Sceillig Mícheál, and it would be fantastic if we could add to that list by having Glendalough inscribed

on the list as well. I intend to write to people in the local community and to the other stake-holders involved so that we can make a big ef-fort to have Glendalough placed on the list. The Minister was very clear that there was nothing stopping Glendalough from being inscribed on the list as long as everyone in the community pulls together on this. It will be a fantastic project for the entire community in Wick-low, and hopefully we will reach our objective in the near future. There would be substantial benefits for tourism in Wick-low if Glendalough is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Robert Dowds said: “Glendalough is a fantastic heritage that the people of Ireland

treasure, and it is also a significant tourist draw which helps provide many jobs not only in Glen-dalough but also across the country. If it can be inscribed as being a World Heritage Site, this will only increase its attraction for tourists and help to boost tourist numbers further. With a history that

stretches back nearly 1,500 years, Glendalough is a place that must be protected and preserved. It is a fantastic piece of our heritage which is unique giv-en the exceptional natural beauty surrounding it. “

AS of June 28th, nearly 1,286,802 properties have been registered under the charge, including 23,626 waivers. Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan has thanked members of the public for their contribution, especially during difficult financial times for the country.

“In the last few years Irish people have had a tough time of it and, in spite of that, almost 1.3 million people have paid the Household Charge. They recognise the importance of compliance with the law of the land and, by paying the charge, they have made their contribution to the

provision of essential services in their own areas. I would like to thank them for this.”

“We are on the road to economic recovery but it is not an easy road. It has required and will continue to require some hard decisions. This Government is prepared to take the hard decisions that will get us there. The tax base in Ireland has been broadened this year with the introduction of the Local Property Tax and in the long run this will provide local authorities with the ability to raise funding locally and spend it on necessary local services,” said the Minister.

“NEVER ALONE” teenlIne Ireland CharItY sIngle set to be released on i-tunes

TEEN-LINE Ireland is a helpline for teenagers, offering emotional support and providing a safety net coupled with a listening service to young people aged between 13 and 19 years of age. It addresses the whole gamut of problems, fears and isolation experienced by that age group, whether it may be loneliness, anxiety, confusion or suicidal tendencies. The national freephone helpline is an invaluable tool for an often overlooked voiceless demographic that could feel too young for one particular service and too old for another.

CommItment

The helplines are run by dedicated, highly trained volunteers, all of whom were trained in-house and presently total sixty personnel with a view to extending that figure as the demand and response to the service averages out at an extraordinary 9000 calls per annum.

charity. They are part funded by the HSE which pays the salary of two part- time office staff with the rest of the funding coming from various donations and fund raising activities. Opening hours, contact numbers and a link to make donations can be found at the end of this article.

establIshed

Teen-Line Ireland was established by Ms Maureen Bolger in 2006 borne from a personal tragedy having lost her son to suicide. One local admirer of the service is twenty one year old Luke S Clerkin who suffers with depression, and along with others, creatively set about to raise the public consciousness of Teen-Line Ireland and the problems it is tackling. During his own recovery he rekindled his passion for music and songwriting and along with eighteen year old Gavin Doyle wrote the song “Never Alone”,

inspired jointly by the suicide of a school colleague, Glen Haybyrne, and the invaluable assistance of Teen-Line Ireland to the community.

fundraIser

Luke’s first tribute to Teen-Line Ireland was a gig last July in Captain America’s, Tallaght, when he assembled a group of local musicians to perform. Then, as the impetus of the song “Never Alone” snowballed, they got free recording time from Cian Donohue’s Block C studios in the locality and acquired the services of unsigned artists and musicians from far and wide including a cellist from the RTE Symphony Orchestra, no less !! The collective also took to the streets, busking in Temple Bar and raising an impressive two thousand, three hundred euro of which they admirably reimbursed Block C Studios and donated the rest to Teen-Line Ireland. They plan to continue busking in Temple Bar

until the launch of “Never Alone” and all monies will continue to be donated to Teen-Line Ireland.

the sIngle

The launch of “Never Alone” is due to be released in August on i-Tunes and other downloadable platforms, with Teen-Line Ireland receiving the proceeds. There will also be an accompanying video relating to the theme. He admits the music business is time consuming and challenging but very rewarding at the same time.

I personally heard a sneak preview of “Never Alone” and it is haunting, harmonious and heartfelt. Tallaght definitely has talent !!!.

Teen-Line Ireland are open every day from 7pm-10pm and from 3pm-10pm every Wednesday. Their aim is to alter the opening times from 8pm-11pm daily and from 4pm-11pm every Wednesday. The national freephone helpline is 1800 833 634.

“A concerted effort is needed over the next few years to return our country to prosperity. This will require strong leadership and a sustained

AFTER proving a knockout with a packed audience in the Odean cinema Blanchardstown on the 10th of May as part of Fingal Film Festival this year, the documentary Boxing Clever has now been released to view for just €3.

All proceeds will be to build a ladies changing room, as the club is currently restricted from offering membership as they have no female facilities.

The Documentary shows the positive impact the club has made to Ballyfermot since it opened it’s doors in 1979 and how it continues to prove a huge asset to the local and wider community. A fact bourne out by the enthusiasm for the sport and the nurturing of dreams of aspiring youngsters.

Steven Murray, the award winning screen writer and director of the documentary, believes the story of the men behind the boxing club, past and present, is nothing short of inspirational. The documentary has been described as “A great watch, insightful, funny, compelling” by Dave Byne of the Fingal Film Festival. The fim can be seen if you go

to the club website www.stmatthewsboxingclub.com and click the Boxing Clever Documentary link.

The manager of the Club Robbie Murray a former Irish professional boxing champion, is now pursuing a new battle. He feels his duty to the club will be to enable girls to enjoy the same facilities as their male counterparts.

The documentary also follows the journey of one of its founding members and a former coach Stephen Maher who made such a positive impact on Robbie, who came to the club as a chronically sick child with Asthma.

On the 21st of June 2013 Robbie and “home school coordinator” for Kylemore College Jim Oconnell, coordinated the girls from Kylemore college, Raphaels and St Louises in a training session in the club. As part of the promotion for the now available Boxing Clever download. Jim has been liasing with St Matthews for 29 years where teams from Kylemore college polish off preparation for the Dublin Vocational championships.

THE University of Maryland in America performed a study in 2010 to see if their students were addicted to social media and cell phones. The study asked 200 students to not use any social media or phones for a full day and write about how it affected them, the study showed that the withdrawal from social media had the same side effects such as anxiety, misery and feeling jittery as alcohol and drug addiction. Now Internet Addiction is not recognised as an actual addiction but the concept makes sense. Some of the students involved in the study described feeling isolated and cut off from the real world; it would appear that cyber connections are replacing personal real life connections.

It’s really not that far fetched, today you have laptops, iPods, smart phones, iPads and television all feeding this social media addiction and its true that sites such as Facebook and Twitter have the ability to connect us with people who would otherwise be lost to us.

But here’s the thing it’s causing the youth of today to spend more time sitting in front of a screen clicking their lives away and they barely even notice it because the computer is giving them the human connection that we as humans crave. I mean you don’t even have to go outside to meet your soul mate anymore because sites such as POF.com are finding them for you, and truthfully you probably have a better chance of finding that special someone because the site matches you based on the answers you gave in a very long quiz. It’s crazy!

There’s no denying that the internet is a valuable tool in today’s society but it also has its down turns, such as the lack of privacy, cyber bullying, cyber stalking, etc. Its frightening what you can find online and for every great aspect there’s one that’s equally as terrifying. In the news recently there have been stories of cyber peeping toms, men or even women who can hack into your laptop and secretly watch you through your webcam, think

about it how many times have you left your laptop on while you got changed or danced around your room to your favourite song? Scary!

But still you can’t deny how popular social media is; almost everyone uses some sort of social media site and a lot of businesses and stars use such sites as twitter and Facebook to promote their work and connect with their

audience. Still maybe it’s time that we pull

back from our reliance on social media and start trying to re-build our real world connections again, Internet Addiction might not be recognised as an actual addiction but it’s clearly not impossible. Maybe next time we go to log on we should go for a walk or actually hang out with the friends we’re talking to online.

new app for real-tIme InformatIon: IrIsh natIonal transport servICes

A new national transport App for iPhones and Android phones, integrating all real-time arrival information services for Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus, Irish Rail, DART and Luas in one handy place has been launched by the National Transport Authority.

Among the features of this nifty app are alerts which “inform people when their bus is 10 minutes, or 20 minutes or 30 minutes away from a certain bus stop, so they can plan when to leave their home or work”. It has also integrates a GPS dependent feature which notifies when they are approaching a particular bus stop.

It has been revealed that although some regional Bus Éireann services are not yet Real-Time enabled, the Authority is “working intensively with Bus Éireann on this and all remaining services will be enabled by the end of the year. In these cases the App will show the scheduled time”. However,

a recent independent survey, commissioned by National Transport Authority, can boast a “96% accuracy rate for Dublin Bus’ Real Time data (services arriving within 60 seconds of ‘due’ prediction).”

Alan Kelly, the Public Transport Minister and Fine Gael TD, welcomed the development of the App announcing; “Technology can greatly improve the transport experience and the Real Time Ireland App is a further demonstration of this. Transport users now have all the real time travel information available in Ireland literally at the touch of a button. As Minister, I have been extremely keen to embrace new Technology to improve the transport experience and this App is yet another example of this being done. I commend the National Transport Authority for their work in this regard”.

‘get the f******g moneY In’FIVE words that have enraged the Irish public more than any other event in the last few years. The arrogant, reckless, elitist boys-club behaviour of David Drum, John Bowe and the rest of the Anglo harem have brought to light the events leading up to, and following, the bank guarantee on September 2008. This one bank has now cost the Irish taxpayers 25 billion euro, not to mention destruction in national pride and our international reputation. Over the following days and weeks, the callous behaviour of Drum and co. had the airwaves melting with angry citizens venting their anger and disbelief to whomever had the patience to listen. Yet, in the midst of this orgy of rage, one question seemed to slip people by – Why are we surprised?

Over the decades, the main pillars of Irish society have seen their power and influence eroded due to scandal, corruption and deceit – the most notable being the Catholic church and Fianna Fail. There was a time in Ireland when the local bank manager was a pillar of his/her own local community. A respected, admired and cautious individual, they played a part

in setting a newly married couple up with a mortgage for their first house, or helped a young lad buy his first car. Yet the nature of banking, particularly commercial banking, has metamorphosised dramatically over the years and the actions of these banks (intended or unintended) have had catastrophic effects on society at large. The Anglo Irish tapes appear to have galvanised the Irish public in their contempt for the elite establishment who have brought the country to its knees. But did we really think the Anglo executives’ moral compasses were pointed towards humility and shame during the banking crisis? Did we think that these decent, honest men reluctantly accepted tax payers money in the form of a bailout and then went to confession to atone for their sins? Did we think that they were lying awake at night during the crisis, lamenting the abandonment of their civic pride? Of course not, to think that would be naïve at best and shockingly deluded at worst. This sort of alpha male, posturing, recklesss behaviour is rampant in the banking community all over the world. Why should our banks have been any different?

There has been much analysis (both at home and oversees) about what it will take to get the Irish out protesting on the streets. Sure, there have been sporadic protests over the years, but the presence of the trade unions and left wing political parties have made the public at large sceptical about the objectivity of these protests. The fact of the matter is that a huge proportion of the Irish population feel completely and utterly powerless in the face of all this corruption and austerity. While the banking sector may have been found wanting when it comes to civic pride, the same can be said about the general Irish population. There is a severe lack of civic pride in Ireland, perhaps emanating from our troubled history of colonial rule. However, this is too simplistic a reason. Countries all over the world often base their national pride on the leaders that govern them. During George Bush’s tenure as US President, right-wing American patriotism reached an all-time high. Currently, under Obama, many liberal Americans feel a sense of rebirth in their countries reputation overseas. While this partisan politics may be divisive, it does have the ability to

galvanise certain communities together and create a national identity that captures the zeitgeist. In Ireland, we ALL feel let down by ALL of our political leaders that it has led almost to a sense of self-loathing – the notion that we get what we deserve. This sense of self-hatred manifests itself in a lack of respect for our own country and its laws and social responsibilities. The streets of Dublin are littered with rubbish – but it’s the governments fault for not clearing it up, certainly not ours for throwing it. The rate of anti-social behaviour is escalating at an alarming rate – but it is societies fault for letting these people down, certainly not bad parenting or a lack of discipline in the home. People vomit and urinate all over the city centre streets in the early hours of the weekend – but sure aren’t we allowed a night out after everything we’ve been through? No-one ever takes responsibility for their behaviour in Ireland, so how can we expect the devious bankers to? Unless we start to respect ourselves and take pride in our civil society, our so called elites – politicians/law makers/corporate executives/judiciary – never will.

new lord maYor ofdublIn has been eleCted

OISíN Quinn, a nephew of the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn was elected on Monday 24th. June 2013. He succeeds Fine Gael’s Naoise O Muiri.

Mr. Quinn has been a Labour councillor since 2004, representing the Pembroke/Rathmines area. Another Labour councillor Henry Upton, who represents Crumlin-Kimmage, was elected deputy Lord Mayor.

The position of Dublin’s first citizen is rotated between Fine Gael and Labour and it is Labour’s turn to take up the role.

Mr. Quinn who Studied Law at UCD Ireland and the University of London is also a practicing senior barrister who specialises in employment law. He previously worked for the Law Reform Commission. He grew up in Sandymount and now lives in Rathmines. He is married to Elva Mulchrone and the couple have three children. He is an avid Arsenal Football Club supporter.

Mr. Quinn was nominated for the role, unopposed, at an internal selection meeting of the Labour party in April of this year.

The role of Lord Mayor of Dublin is an ambassadorial one. The First Citizen represents Dublin locally and on the international stage; although it has been suggested that in the future, the role may become a more powerful position whereby the people of Dublin will directly elect the first citizen.

During his twelve-month tenure, Mr. Quinn will live and work in the official residence of The First Citizen, the Mansion House on Dawson Street.

Mr. Quinn said, “I am honoured to have been elected by my colleagues on Dublin City Council to the role of Lord Mayor, representing the citizens of this wonderful city.

He continued, “Dublin is a great city and I will reinforce the message at local, national and international level that Dublin is a city on the move, a great place in which to live, visit and do business.”

Mr. Quinn stated that his main aims were “to promote Dublin as a gateway to Europe for business, to make Dublin a family friendly city, and a city that embraces diversity at all

levels of society.”In his acceptance speech, Mr. Quinn said he

would use his office to promote leadership in the many non-Irish communities in Dublin. He also stressed the need to make Dublin more family friendly. He said, “We must make the city friendlier to parents with young children who need changing facilities. Public places must be safe and clean and should have plenty of small child-friendly play areas. The Luas link up and the expansion of the Dublin bikes scheme will help. As will dedicated cycle ways and greenways along our canals, rivers and coast.

Mr. Quinn concluded his speech by stating, “I am proud of this great city and I believe we are taking it in the right direction. Dublin has a very bright future if we can seize the historic opportunity in front of us. I will work tirelessly to achieve these objectives over the next twelve months and I look forward to engaging with you all on each of these objectives.”

It’s a funnY old game

THE morning Warren Gatland dropped Brian O’Driscoll for the final Lion’s game, I could have sworn the world stopped spinning on its axis as satellites spun out of control and all service ceased temporarily.

It dominated Print, TV and radio with social network sites ablaze ( imagine if Twitter was around when the Roy, Mick and Saipan show took place, there would have been a meltdown of nuclear proportions ).

Luckily for him, Gatland’s image came out of it relatively unscathed and he was grudgingly absolved of his sin. If the same margin of defeat was reversed, he would have been crucified at the high altar of public outrage with his career and achievements mangled in a managerial massacre.

A media feeding frenzy would have seated him in the terrible trinity of Toto Schialli and Thierry Henry in Irish sporting consciousness

and his name synonymous with failure and one bad decision.

It shows how modern day sport in most of its disciplines has impacted on our lives and now regularly hops, skips and jumps to front page news, whether it be the age old spirit and national pride of winning or losing, the money and glamour or cheating and lack of sportsmanship, sport is certainly big business.

GAA, soccer, rugby, boxing, golf, horses and the rest, each with its own superstars and soap opera storylines. Rivalries and revenge, heart stopping excitement, mouth watering fixtures and jaw dropping results keep most of us fascinated and some folk downright fanatical.

Our own Katie Taylor became an ambassador and trailblazer in last year’s Olympics and gave us all something to be happy about. She has kept her feet firmly on the ground, unlike her opponents, whose whole bodies are usually

firmly on the ground. How a nation can hold its breath, then jump,

hug and kiss total strangers. Grown men will cry and couples name their children after heroes and all this over a first round game of snooker on BBC 2.

The strangeness of our national coach needing an interpreter, although in hindsight if you listen to some of the interviews after GAA game’s it mightn’t be a bad idea after all.

Some soccer stars earning up to £200k a week makes me wonder why not retire after a season with £10 million and apply for Jobseekers, just to give the rest of us a chance.

But seriously, in a parallel universe where one man’s value for kicking a leather orb around a grass pitch could accommodate, irrigate, educate and feed a small African village puts it all into perspective. As the saying goes, “it’s a funny old game “.

It can be difficult to stay on top of what’s best for your own health and well-being, so knowing what’s good for your pet may seem a little confusing. Keep your feline friends and canine companions healthy and happy by following these 10 pet care tips the pros want you to know.

1. Regular Exams are Vital

Just like you, your pet can get heart problems, develop arthritis, or have a toothache. The best way to prevent such problems or catch them early is to see your veterinarian every year.

Regular exams are "the single most important way to keep pets healthy," says Kara M. Burns, MS, Med, LVT, president of the Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians. Annual vet visits should touch on nutrition and weight control, as well as cover recommended vaccinations, parasite control, dental exam, and health screenings.

2. Spay and Neuter Your Pets

Thousands of pets end up in shelters every year. Some are lost, some have been abandoned, and some are homeless. Here's an easy way to avoid adding to that number -- spay and neuter your cats and dogs. It's a procedure that can be performed as early as six to eight weeks of age.

Spaying and neutering doesn't just cut down on the number of unwanted pets; it has other substantial benefits for your pet. Studies show it also lowers the risk of certain cancers, and reduces a pet's risk of getting lost by decreasing the tendency to roam.

3. Prevent Parasites

Fleas are the most common external parasite that can plague pets, and they can lead to irritated skin, hair loss, hot spots, and infection. Fleas can also introduce other parasites into your cat or dog. All it takes is for your pet to swallow one flea, and it can to end up with tapeworms, the most common internal parasite affecting dogs and cats.

Year-round prevention is key, regular flea and intestinal parasite control, as well as heartworm prevention in endemic areas. Because some parasite medications made for dogs can be fatal to cats, talk to your vet about keeping your precious pets worm-free, flea-free - and safe.

4. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Many dogs and cats are overweight or obese. And just like people, obesity in pets comes with health risks that include diabetes, arthritis, and cancer. Overfeeding is the leading cause of obesity, and keeping our pets trim can add years to their lives.

Because pets need far fewer calories than most of us think -- as little as 185-370 a day for a small, inactive dog; just 240-350 calories daily for a 10-pound cat -- talk to your vet, who can make feeding suggestions based on your pet's age, weight, and lifestyle.

5. Get Regular Vaccinations

For optimal health, pets need regular vaccinations against common ills, such as rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, and canine hepatitis. How often your dog or cat needs to be immunized depends on their age, lifestyle, health, and risks,, so talk to your vet about the vaccinations that make sense for your pet.

It can be difficult to stay on top of what’s best for your own health and well-being, so knowing what’s good for your pet may seem a little confusing. Keep your feline friends and canine companions healthy and happy by following these 10 pet care tips the pros want you to know.

6. Provide an Enriched Environment

An enriched environment is another key to the long-term health and welfare of your canine and feline friends. Pets need mental stimulation, say the pros, which may mean daily walks for your pooch, and scratching posts, window perches, and toys for your cat. It means play time with you, which not only keeps your pet's muscles toned and boredom at bay, it also strengthens your bond with your four-footed companions.

7. ID Microchip Your Pet

Lack of identification means as few as 14% of pets never find their way home after getting lost. Fortunately, microchipping allows for the pet to be reunited with its family, no matter how far away it is when found. About the size of a rice grain, a microchip is inserted under the skin in less than a second. It needs no battery and can be scanned by a vet or an animal control officer in seconds. Be sure to register the chip ID with the chip's maker. A current registration is the vital last step in making certain your pet can always find his way home.

8. Pets Need Dental Care, Too

Just like you, your pet can suffer from gum disease, tooth loss, and tooth pain. And just like you, regular brushing and oral cleanings help keep your pet's teeth strong and healthy.

It's estimated 80% of dogs and 70% cats show signs of dental disease by age three, leading to abscesses, loose teeth, and chronic pain. In addition to regular dental cleanings by your vet, periodontal disease can be avoided by proper dental care.

9. Never Give Pets People Medication

Medicines made for humans can kill your pet. In 2010 the ASPCA listed human drugs in the top 10 pet toxins. Medicine like ibuprofen and naproxen are the most common pet poisoning culprits, but antidepressants, decongestants, muscle relaxants, and acetaminophen are just a few of the human drugs that pose health risks to pets. Human drugs can cause kidney damage, seizures, and cardiac arrest in a dog or cat.

10. Proper Restraint in a Vehicle

You buckle up for safety when you’re in the car, shouldn’t your pet? Unrestrained pets in a car are a distraction to the driver, and can put everyone at risk. To keep pets safe in transit:

•Never allow pets to travel in the front seat, where they’re at risk of severe injury or death if the airbag deploys.•Don’t let dogs ride with their head out the window or untethered in the back of a truck bed. Both practices put them at risk of being thrown from the vehicle in the event of an accident.•To keep pets safe, confine cats to carriers, then secure the carrier with a seatbelt. For dogs, there’s the option of a special harness attached to a seatbelt, or a well-secured kennel.

IN a statement, Richard Boyd Barrett TD for the People Before Profit Alliance, has described the government’s announcement that it is abandoning its plan to sell-off the harvesting rights of Ireland’s publically owned forests as a “stunning victory for people power and public protest.”

Minister Howlin said at a meeting of the Finance committee that “now is not the appropriate time to proceed with the sale of harvesting rights in Coillte”.

Deputy Boyd Barrett, who has been involved in organising a series of protests opposing the privatisation plan, including a 4000 strong demonstration in Avondale, Co Wicklow in April, had previously described the plan to privatise the harvesting rights to Ireland’s state forestry as “an act of cultural and economic sabotage.”

Deputy Boyd Barrett said it was clear that the government’s decision to roll back on the privatisation plan was a direct result of large scale protests and campaigning, pointing out that the first indication that the government was re-considering the plan to sell Coillte’s harvesting rights, came in a comment from Minister Pat Rabitte, two days after the hugely successful Avondale protest.

Deputy Boyd Barrett paid tribute to the Natural Resources Protection Alliance, the Woodland League, Keep Ireland Open and a whole range of other environmental, walking and community groups that had campaigned and protested over recent months on the issue.

However, Deputy Boyd Barrett said major questions still remained over the future of Irish forestry, pointing out the fact that successive government’s had “failed spectacularly in developing Irish forestry to its full potential, particularly in terms of meeting afforestation targets and realising Irish forestry’s enormous economic potential.”

Deputy Boyd Barrett said the victory of the campaign to keep Coillte’s harvesting rights in public ownership was only one battle in much a wider campaign to stop the give-away of Ireland’s natural resources and state assets and to development those resources for the benefit of the Irish people.

Richard Boyd Barrett said:“This is a really stunning victory for people

power and public protest. It is absolutely clear, as much as the government may wish to deny it, that Ireland’s public forestry has been saved from privatisation, as a result of a huge campaign of people power.”

“The Minister said there was a plan for restructuring so while this is a victory we need to keep an eye on what this means and make sure there isn’t privatisation by stealth”.

“The government committed publically to sell-off the harvesting rights to Coillte in June 2012 under the EU-IMF Troika agreement, and re-stated their intention to go ahead with that sale several times since then. It is only because thousands of people joined protests, tens of thousands signed petitions and the vast majority of Irish people made clear their opposition to a disgraceful plan to privatise a precious public asset that the government have now backed off.”

“All those who have campaigned and protested – environmental, campaign, community groups, and the public at large – deserve great credit for stopping this disgraceful plan to sell-off a precious and huge valuable natural resource.”

“However, beyond this victory in retaining our public forests in public ownership, we must now go on to demand that our public forests are developed to their full potential as amenities and as a resource that could generate thousands of desperately needed jobs and revenue for our society. Successive Irish governments have failed spectacularly to reach national afforestation targets or to generate the employment potential of Irish forestry.”

“We also need to go from this victory to campaign more generally against the give-away of Ireland’s natural resources, whether it be oil and gas, wind, fishing, or the equally disgraceful plans to sell-off parts of hugely successful and strategically important state companies such as the ESB, Bord Gais or Aer Lingus. These resources and state enterprises are precisely the vehicles the state needs to keep in public ownership and invest in, if we are to solve the dire unemployment crisis and help chart our way out of the current economic crisis.”

Summer Seaside Memories1. Clean the sea shells and look for any hole in it which you can use to thread the necklace through (or a thin area suitable for an adult to drill through). If needed: Ask an adult to drill one or two holes in the sea shell using an electric drill & protective goggles.

2. Get Craftea! Decorate with some markers or paints. Permanent markers work great as they wont run when wet, but if you want to use washable markers you could give it a coat of non-toxic varnish or non-toxic PVA glue/ modge-podge to set the marker 3. If you like you can give the shell a quick spray of glitter (or use PVA glue + glitter sprinkles) to add some sparkle and shine to make the colours pop, or glue on any other fun craft pieces like beads or shiny confetti you can find to complete your pendant. 4. Thread the ribbon or elastic thread through the holes, knot and wear around your neck!

Get the kids creative with some shells, markers, string, beads & bling so they can wear their summer seaside memories around theirnecks as pendants all year round!

THE Irish have become more intolerant to immigrants since the recession, with 20 per cent of the public opposing any immigrants from different ethnic backgrounds coming into the country according to recent statistics.

A report carried out by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) with the aim of providing a “bird’s eye view of integration in Ireland” found that the amount of people holding attitudes in opposition to immigrants has trebled from 6 per cent in 2002 to almost 20 per cent 2010.

The report also found that immigrants experience higher unemployment, as the number of employed Irish nationals fell by 10% between 2008 and 2011 while employment among non-Irish nationals fell by 40%. It was found that Africans experienced the highest rate of unemployment rate at 27 per cent. This accompanied higher reported discrimination among the black ethnic group occurred across a whole range of situations “including shops, pubs, housing and transport” and had risen since 2004. The report stated that such discrimination is a “serious issue that needs to be addressed”.

This runs in contrast to an earlier report which claimed that “attitudes to immigrants in Ireland in 2002 were among the most liberal in Europe”. One of the main factors in the rise of intolerance towards immigrants has been explained as arising from job

scarcity. It speculated that “as the economic position deteriorates and unemployment rises, attitudes to immigrants become more resistant.” It was also noted that “the more immigrants come to a country and settle there, the more resistant to immigrants and immigration the host population becomes”. The report observed that “in Ireland in the period 2002–2010 both these factors were at work which makes this a very interesting period in which to examine attitudes”.

With regards to the rise in the numbers of immigrants receiving welfare benefits, it was revealed that although this “seemed to happen at the outset of the recession” more recent trends suggest that “the numbers of non-Irish nationals stabilized, even as the number of nationals claiming payments continued to rise.” A likely factor in this has been the introduction of a “centre of interest test” under which a welfare applicant has to demonstrate that Ireland was his or her centre of interest. Professor Alan Barrett, head of the economic analysis division of ESRI, was recorded by the Irish Times explaining to a conference in Dublin that “this provides a degree of discretion to people making decisions on welfare as to whether or not someone is entitled,” while noting that “when the more discretionary element of the system kicked in things changed a little bit.” As it stands, immigrants are less likely to be receiving

welfare payments than Irish nationals and that trend has been steadily increasing.

Other findings include that non-Irish nationals are more likely to possess a third degree qualification than Irish nationals. The Asian group were reported to be particularly highly qualified, with 72 per cent having third-level qualifications, with this group including a “substantial proportion of nurses and other medical workers”.

The younger and higher-educated of the Irish population were counted to hold the most liberal attitudes towards immigration. It was noted that although the fact that the “highly educated are more liberal in their attitudes may reflect their less vulnerable labor market position”, it could also be due to the “strong association of education with attitudes to welfare or to culture”.

The Integration Centre, who published the report, announced that “the Government needs to name integration as an important objective of its economic and social policies, rather than deferring dialogue until such a time as large-scale problems evolve”. Suggested policy changes include increased efforts to “promote existing anti-racism initiatives in schools and create a nationwide resource that can be used in the classroom” and attempts to “communicate the economic benefits of migration to the wider public.”

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take

millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenceless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an

untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

and Ron Perlman (the ‘Hellboy’ films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini,

The lone ranger (2013)

The Lone Ranger is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humour, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new

train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

In this retelling of The Lone Ranger legacy from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, the masked hero is once again partnered with Native American companion Tonto to fight injustice in the Old American West. This time, the threat comes from industrialist Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson) – who utilizes the recent invention of railroad technology to carve a path of malevolence on his way to money and power. Will the two unlikely heroes stop Cole before the greedy evildoer can secure power and authority that could shape the West in all the wrong ways? Hi-yo, Silver! Away!

ONE of the most important aspects of being a new parent is choosing the right name for your child. The Central Statistics Office recently released the Vital Statistics, Irish Babies’ Names 2012 Report. The report shows the popularity ranking of baby names registered in Ireland in 2012.

According to the report Emily and Jack were the most popular names given to babies born in 2012. Out of 37,210 boys born in 2012, 831 were named Jack, while out of 35,015 girls born, 626 were named Emily.

Jack, James, Daniel, Sean and Conor were the top five boy’s names in 2012, while Emily, Sophie, Emma, Grace and Lily were the top five girl’s names in 2012. According to the report “girls are given a wider variety of names than boys with 4,730 girls’ names registered compared to 3,804 boys’ names.”

The report shows how only two counties had different popular boy’s names outside of the top five. Adam, David, Michael and Ryan were the most popular in Longford with

Ryan being the most popular boy’s name in Monaghan. The research is important in highlighting name trends among Irish parents and parents of non-Irish nationality. In 2012 Jack and Emily were the most popular names for children where both parents were Irish nationals. James, Ella and Jessica proved most popular with parents of UK nationality while Daniel and Sarah ranked the highest among parents outside of EU nationality.

The highest new entry in the top 100 for girls was Evie while for boys it was Isaac. Evie rose 40 places from its 124th spot in 2011 to its 84th spot in 2012 while Isaac rose to 85th place in 2012 from its 101st spot in 2011. According to the report there was a bigger range of favourite city and county girls’ names outside the top five - Amelia, Aoife, Lucy, Sarah, Saoirse, Mia, Ella, Chloe and Lauren.

The results are based “on an analysis of the first names recorded on birth returns for registration and vital statistics, first recorded by CSO in 1998”.

The Opel ADAM takes personalisation and dynamics to a whole new level. The unique two-tone ‘floating roof ’ gives ADAM the

allure to stand out from the crowd. And measuring just under 3.70 meters in length and 1.72 meters in width, the agile three-door doesn’t only look squat, it´s developed to provide the perfect urban driving experience too.

ADAM is the first car to feature the new Opel face. Framed by a lower and wider single grille, the newly proportioned brand bar carries the Opel logo and links to the chrome wing feature in the headlights. Round turn indicators alongside the grille also helps give ADAM a friendly smile you won´t forget.

ADAM owes its distinct silhouette to the short bonnet, gently sloping roofline and fast-raked rear. The ‘floating roof ’ concept uses high-gloss black elements that visually detach the roof from the body. Chrome trim underscores the distinct window shape and look like calligraphy strokes - varying from thick to thin. And what better place to position the ADAM badge than on the fixed side glass that seamlessly flows into the rear window. The bodyside design conveys athleticism and precision using the signature blade in the lower door and iconic door handle feature linking the tail lamps.

Seen from behind, ADAM has muscle and stance reflected in the contoured bumpers and wide positioned tail light clusters. These follow the same philosophy as the headlights with high-gloss black housings and a chrome wing that enhances the lighting signature. ADAM uses an ergonomic touch pad behind the logo to access the tailgate and at the same time simplifying the design of the rear.

ADAM not only looks good on the outside. The inside delivers iconic style as well. Three different trims represent three completely different moods. In ADAM you have the choice of 20 dashboard insert colours, patterns and textures, but one thing always remains the same - high quality material to rock your world.

The sculpted Interior shows a rich play of taut surfaces, flowing lines and transitions ensuring that sculptural artistry meets German precision.

The two- tone accent colour, which matches

the seats, wraps from the lower dash panels into the door trims visually widen the cabin and gives you a feeling of roominess usually found in more upmarket cars. The door trims are foam padded soft fabrics and vinyl. The round instruments and chrome beveled switches convey sporty precision. The instruments fascinate with their funky red backlit pointers. The sculpted steering wheel with the contoured airbag cover is delightful to hold and look at. The matt-chromed decor bezel reaches up to support the wheel’s controls.

Three areas inside show large high quality decor panels: the dash upper, the doors and the centre console are trimmed in the exterior colour or clad in printed and textured decor foils which match the car’s interior cloth or leather trim. The choice is yours.

The optional fixed glass roof fills the interior of ADAM with light. And you don’t have to let the weather rain on your parade. ADAM offers you the blue summer sky at all times. Maybe you prefer a starry night or to go sporty with a black and white chequered flag. Just light up your world with illuminated headliners.

Microsoft has backtracked on how the Xbox One will handle used games and offline play, following weeks of backlash.

An update on Microsoft’s news site lists the following changes:

• Xbox One games will not require an Internet connection every 24 hours just to play offline.

• A one-time Internet connection will be required during system set-up, but that’s it.

• Games on disc may be lent, resold, given away and rented, just as Xbox 360 discs are today.

• Downloaded games will work without an Internet connection.

• There will be no regional restrictions.A post by Don Mattrick, President of

Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business confirmed the news shortly after. “While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and

access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content,” Mattrick wrote. “We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.”Mattrick did say that some of the features Microsoft had announced for the Xbox One will have to be taken away:

• Games on disc will have to be in the tray to play them.

• Previously, Microsoft had said that games on disc would install automatically, at which point the disc would not be necessary.

• Users will not be able to share downloaded games with each other. Under the original plan, users would be able to pick any nine people to share their game libraries with. This would have allowed two people on

separate consoles to play a single copy of the game together.

Microsoft was trying to accelerate the demise of the disc by effectively making the physical copy worthless. This would have provided a couple of benefits, as listed above, and it would have given Microsoft greater control over its own games market and pricing.

But it also would have taken power away from consumers to lend, trade, sell and keep games for as long as they pleased, without being bound to Microsoft’s whims and servers. The fact that Sony didn’t adopt any sweeping policy changes on the PlayStation 4 only made Microsoft’s policies seem more draconian. The Xbox One’s approach required users to trade ownership rights for convenience (at least for those with a steady Internet connection), and it was a trade-off many users were not willing to make.

An 18-year-old Indian-American girl has invented a super-capacitor device that could potentially charge your cellphone in

less than 20 seconds.Eesha Khare, from Saratoga, California, was

awarded the Young Scientist Award by the Intel Foundation after developing the tiny device that fits inside mobile phone batteries, that could allow them to charge within 20-30 seconds.

The so-called super-capacitor, a gizmo that can pack a lot of energy into a tiny space, charges quickly and holds its charge for a long time, NBC News reported.

Khare has been awarded USD 50,000 for developing the tiny device. She has also attracted the attention of tech giant Google for her potentially revolutionary invention.

Here’s her description of the project in a California State Science Fair outline:

With the rapid growth of portable electronics, it has become necessary to develop efficient energy-storage technology to match this development. While batteries are currently used for energy-storage, they suffer from long charging times and short cycle life. Electrochemical supercapacitors have attracted attention as energy-storage devices because they bridge the gap between current alternatives of conventional capacitors and batteries, offering higher energy density than conventional capacitors and higher power density than batteries. Despite

these advantages, supercapacitor energy density is much lower than batteries and increasing energy density remains a key challenge in supercapacitor research. The goal of this work was to design and synthesize a supercapacitor with increased energy density while maintaining power density and long cycle life.

According to Khare, her device can last for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles, compared with 1,000 cycles for conventional rechargeable batteries.

"My cellphone battery always dies," she said when asked about what inspired her to work on the energy-storage technology.

Super-capacitors allowed her to focus on her interest in nanochemistry "really working at the nanoscale to make significant advances in many different fields."

The gadget has so far only been tested on an LED light, but the good news is that it has a good chance of working successfully in other devices, like mobile phones, the report said.

Khare sees it fitting inside cellphones and the other portable electronic devices proliferating in today's world.

"It is also flexible, so it can be used in roll up displays and clothing and fabric. It has a lot of different applications and advantages over batteries in that sense," Khare added.

An auction house in Cologne, Germany, sold an Apple-1 computer to an anonymous

entrepreneur from the Far East for $671,400. It seems like rather a lot of money for any personal computer — and especially for one that is too out of date to run the latest software.

Except that the computer in question is an Apple-1, the bare-bones machine that Steve Wozniak designed and Steve Jobs marketed in 1976, shortly before they devised the groundbreaking and wildly popular Apple II.

The Apple-1 is a rare computer, no doubt: Wozniak and Jobs sold only a few hundred of them at most in the first place, at the famous list price of $666.66. Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs in 1976

The Last of Us is a survival horror action-adventure video game developed by Naughty Dog

and published by Sony Computer Entertainment exclusively for the PlayStation 3. It was officially released worldwide on June 14, 2013.

The player takes control of Joel (voiced and motion-captured by Troy Baker), who is trekking across a post-apocalyptic United States in 2033, in order to escort the young Ellie (voiced and Motion captured by Ashley Johnson) to a friendly resistance group, the Fireflies. The player defends themselves against zombie-like creatures infected with the cordyceps fungi, as well as hostile humans such as bandits and

cannibals, employing the use of firearms and stealth aided by capabilities such as a visual representation of sound in order to listen for locations of enemies. The player can also craft weapons or medical items by combining items scavenged in the world.

The Last of Us received universal acclaim, receiving perfect scores from many publications. Reviewers praised multiple aspects, including its choice-enabling gameplay, realistic action, emotional depth of the plot, sound design and environments. Several publications have declared the game a masterpiece and a significant title of the seventh console generation.

editors - “The Weight Of Your Love”

The Weight of Your Love is the fourth studio album from British band Editors, which was released on the 1st of July 2013.

This is the first Editors album recorded after the departure of lead guitarist Chris Urbanowicz on 16 April last year. The band released a statement on their official website saying it was “a decision entirely based upon future musical direction” and that Urbanowicz’s departure was “entirely amicable”. This is also the first album to feature new band members Justin Lockey and Elliott Williams.

On the first recording sessions for this album, frontman Tom Smith stated that it had been “a long, hard couple of years and it got pretty dark

because whenever we tried creating new songs it wasn’t good enough. Chris’s heart wasn’t in it any more. For a year, we’d leave rehearsals feeling very negative and uninspired.”

He also said that “I’ve talked for a long time about my love of American bands like R.E.M. and Arcade Fire, and that’s the type of sound our new songs are going towards. They’re more straightforward than our last album. That was more experimental, whereas the new songs could be played on an acoustic guitar. I don’t know what a hit is any more, but these songs feel very classic and immediate.”

The album was produced by Jacquire King and mixed by Craig Silvey. The band also worked

with producer Flood, who had produced their previous albums, In This Light and on This Evening.

The album was mostly recorded live. Regarding the sound of the album, Smith stated that it “[has] a foot in that alt rock/Americana world” and that it feels “untouchable at times”. Lyrically, the album focuses on “love songs... that don’t adhere to the traditional love song type”.

tom odell - “Long Way Down”

The 22 year old British singer/songwriter Tom Odell’s first album ‘Long Way Down’ is an anticipated release. He was

nominated for the BBC’s Sound Of 2013 award, was the BRITs’ Critics’ Choice and, perhaps most impressively, has been chosen to support The Rolling Stones this summer. There is a lot of pressure on this young mans shoulders but should we believe the hype?

If his 2012 Ep “Songs From Another Love” is anything to go by, then yes, we should believe the hype. All four tracks “Sense”, “Can’t Pretend”, and demo “Stay Tonight” were exceptional especially the polished title track “Another Love” that stands out most though. Odell’s voice whispers and breaks with alluring fragility,

before powerfully soaring above the crescendo of piano and drums. It’s a sound indebted to the past rather than heralding an exciting new fusion of styles, but Odell is certainly an accomplished talent and he sets the bar pretty high for his first full length album.

His rousing piano ballads don’t break any moulds, but his heart-aching vulnerability could send a shiver down the stoniest of spines. He’s been writing music since he was 13, is classically trained and hammers the keys with a passion that belies his pop tendencies; flitting between snarly, short tempered and angst-ridden, tender and mournful. Channelling the likes of Jeff Buckley and Ed Harcourt, he could be the antidote to the cluttered female singer-

songwriter market.

When asked what people can expect from his debut he said “It’s got quite a live feel. I wanted it to sound quite raw; just piano, bass drums bit of guitar. I always want it to be about the songs, the lyrics and the melody”.

“Long Way Down” which is released on 24th June 2013,

It’s a packed market for music festivals in Ireland this summer, with some intriguing battles for audiences as festivals target specific audiences and jostle for dominance. Longitude is one this years leaders.

Longitude is a multi-stage, open air festival held in the grounds of the beautiful Marlay Park between the 19th and 21st of July. It’s the sister festival to the UK’s Latitude Festival.

The three day festival will see headliners such as Phoenix take to the main stage on Friday night, followed by New York indie rockers Vampire Weekend on Saturday and to complete the weekend, Kraftwerk perform their amazing 3D concert on the Sunday night.

Amy Winehouse Exhibition To Be Held In CamdenProud Camden presents Amy Winehouse: For You I Was a Flame, an exhibition curated by the Amy Winehouse Foundation with the support of Amy's family, ahead of the late star's 30th birthday. It kick starts a month of events entitled #Amys30, taking place in Camden from the 12th September - 6th October 2013, in support of the Foundation. This month will celebrate Winehouse's life and career, and raise awareness of the great work being achieved in her name.

The exhibition consists of specially chosen works, selected for their significance to her life and career. From Jake Chessum's 2004 photographic portrait of a fresh faced singer on the road to stardom, to Dean Chalkley's now infamous 2011 NME cover along with candid stage shots by Andy Willsher and Carolyn Djanogly's powerful nude. The images featured paint a tender portrait of a life lived to the full.

“We’re all very excited about the exhibition at Proud. Amy’s fans were absolutely amazing in the wake of her passing, and showed their love and loss in the most fantastic ways. This, along with the photos and graffiti art, shows Amy at her glitzy best, and her most vulnerable, demonstrating the effect she had on her followers. We hope that everyone who comes feels the same way.” - Alex Winehouse

The photographs will be shown alongside works donated by leading graffiti artists Mr Brainwash and Bambi, as well as a Gerald Laing piece from Amy's own collection. For the first time, these works will be joined by a range of paintings and drawings donated by the Winehouse family, making this exhibition a once in a lifetime opportunity to view both unseen and iconic images of an ordinary North London girl who touched the hearts of millions.
