Refined bitumen is a hydrocarbon product produced through the refining of suitable crude oils.
Bitumen is an engineering material that exhibits good waterproofing and adhesive properties. Worldwide some 100 million tonnes are produced and used each year. Predominantly used in the road surfacing industry today, 85% of global bitumen production is consumed in the construction and maintenance of roads. The remaining 15% of bitumen production is used in other applications such as roofing, sealing and for insulating purposes.
We have an expanding presence in bitumen and are involved both as a manufacturer and supplier. Formed in March 2016, our joint venture Valt Asphalt (Valt) combines the expertise of the Vitol Group with that of Sargeant Marine, a market leader in bitumen.
Operating through Vitol in Asia and Valt worldwide, we supply customers across the globe using the largest specialist bitumen fleet of vessels in the world.

Standard gradesWe are able to offer bitumen that meets the specifications of our customers.
Penetration grade bitumenPenetration grade bitumen is classified according to Penetration (ASTM D5) and Softening Point (ASTM D36). Pen specifications are used in Europe and many parts of Asia. An example of penetration specifications are shown below:

Specialty gradesPolymer modified bitumen Polymer modified bitumen (PMB) is a standard grade bitumen blended with carefully selected synthetic or natural polymers to improve the engineering properties.
PMBs confer significant improvements to the deformation resistance and fatigue lives of asphalt mixtures thus increasing the service lives of heavily trafficked road surfaces.
Vitol has the capability to supply PMBs to regional specifications.
Cutback bitumenCutback bitumen products are preparations of standard grade bitumen and a solvent (usually kerosene) used to reduce the viscosity of the bitumen. Cutbacks are typically used in sprayed sealing applications and deferred set or cold mixtures.
Bitumen emulsionBitumen emulsions are suspensions of bitumen droplets in water. Used for surface treatments, crack and joint fillings, emulsions can be cationic or anionic in nature. The type of emulsion supplied can be adjusted to suit the intended purpose of the application.
