Grand Knight’s Message by Dave Lewis
November 2018: My Godwink Anyone who has recently watched the Hallmark Channel has seen an advertisement for the upcoming movie “A Godwink Christmas”. Wiktionary defines a Godwink as an event or per-sonal experience, often identified as coincidence, so astonishing that it is seen as a sign of divine intervention… I do not bring this up to advertise a Hallmark Channel movie or to imply what I going to say is in anyway astonishing, because it is not, but I believe that recently I received a Godwink. I have had Godwinks in the past when the homily addressed a recent prayer on a problem or need, a client paid an overdue bill just when I needed the money, or some other unexpected event happened just at the right time. I like to take this op-portunity to tell you about my recent Godwink. I am not a good or even adequate writer and as each month approaches I include in my prayers a selfish prayer to help me think of something for my Grand Knight’s Report. About two weeks ago it occurred to me that this month I should revisit my August Knightbeat. In the August Knightbeat I asked every 8482 Knight to be an “active Knight”. As a reminder, I suggested that one way you could be “active” is to volunteer, from one of the many ministries, at a Sunday Mass. As you recall, two weekends ago (Oct 13-14) Deacon Bill’s homily discussed the need for volunteers to fill the different positions (Greeter, Ushers, EMHC, Lecturer, Acolyte, MC, Sac-ristan, Cantor, etc). As we learn at our ACTS retreat, there are no coincidences. I believe this was a Godwink to me as well as all to step forward to answer Prince of Peace’s call for ministers. You can also help Dennis Majeski at Fellowship Sonday’s at the Knight’s table to present the Knights of Columbus to men of the parish. This is a good opportunity to get to know Brother Knights. On the 3rd Sunday weekend we have the Tamale Sale after the Saturday evening Masses and then after the Sunday Masses until ta-males run out. Sammy Sedita needs leaders and helpers to expand the tamale sale to later Masses. This past month was a big month for your Council. On October 10th you helped serve chopped beef sandwich, chips and soft drink to all who wanted to wish a Hap-py Birthday at Fr John’s Celebration. Before this event, several of your brothers helped chop the beef and make the sandwiches. Then on October 15th your Council hosted the second Alpha meal. We then helped prepare food for two of the Pro-claim events and served the meal at the Dinner Theater on Friday night. Deacon
Bill told me how appreciative everyone at Prince of Peace was for all the help provided by those Knights who volunteered in October. (Continued on Page 4)

KNIGHTS HONOREDKNIGHTS HONOREDKNIGHTS HONORED By Dave Lewis
Knight of the Month - October, 2018 Dennis Majeski
Brother Dennis transferred to our Council in June of this year and immediately began working to help us become a better Council. He took on the difficult, demanding, often thankless, and extremely important job of Membership Director. He quickly reviewed the membership status with Supreme and initiat-ed the process to get everything current. He then took on the task of arranging the August
1 degree for candidates already approved, contacted candi-dates recruited, and recruited candidates. He marshalled through the approval process transfers and new brothers. He went 100 miles an hour at the August 1st Degree getting candidates checked in, payments received, and moving the process forward. He is in constant communication with the Worthy FS Larry, DGK Merv and your GK on issues of mem-bership. Yet he does not consider himself finished as he pre-sents new ideas and keeps your GK honest on the member-ship process. He has not focused only on membership but encouraged the Council to sell Advent and Easter magnets to help raise funds. He encouraged us to step up to honor our Brother Knights who have passed away. Thank you Dennis for your commitment to the Knights of Columbus and your hard work for our Council.
Grand Knight’s Message (Continued from Page 1)
November is also going to be very busy for our Council and especially the 4th Degree brothers. We need Prince of Peace’s 4th Degree to turnout in Social Bal-drick, Full Regalia, or Uniform. On November 3rd is the Silver Rose, Cardinal DiNardo will be presiding at two confirmation masses on November 6th and No-vember 7th. Our Memorial Mass to remember our Brother Knights who have passed away is on November 11th. We need the 4th Degree to participate as well as all Brother Knights not preparing for the Veterans Appreciation Dinner. We will need your help. Please volunteer by letting me know when you are able to help. These are just a few of the needs in the month of November. Be sure to read all the e-mails from the Council. Also check the Council website kofc8482.org on the Calendar Tab. We are trying make sure all the events are on the calendar. When you see the e-mail, don’t ignore it, let me know if you can help.

Seven years in the making, SEXUAL REVOLUTION seeks to
examine the effects of the free-love experiment of the hippie generation and the prophetic encyclical, Humanae Vitae.
This beautiful documentary closely examines the history of the parallel develop-ments of the Pill and modern Natural Family Planning (NFP) by telling the little known story of the founding doctors – Dr. Gregory Goodwin Pincus and Drs. John & Evelyn Billings - all of whom were once colleagues.
The centerpiece of the film is the dramatic life story of Alana Newman, a talented secular musician who gives up her entire musical career for life, family, and love.
Alana shares how through desperation to know her father, she finally discovers the treasures of Theology of the Body, Humanae Vitae, and the riches of true free-dom through a dramatic conversion. The movie will be shown on November 3 at the St. Andrew Discipleship Center at 7:00 pm.. Admission is free.

Dear Brother Knight, Hurricane Michael made landfall as the fourth strongest hurricane ever to hit the U.S. It left a path of devastation in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and the Carolinas that will take years to rebuild.
But before the rebuild can begin, relief is needed. Many have stepped forward in mak-ing a gift in response to our last email, but the need is still great.
With your help, we will provide the affected individuals and families the relief they des-perately need. Your donation will allow us to continue working with local brother Knights and relief groups throughout the affected area to reach as many people in need as pos-sible. And with 100 percent of your donation going directly to relief efforts, you know your gift will make a big difference.
Please join the effort and DONATE TODAY.

Insurance Message by Scott Marcum Pitfalls of Replacing Coverage You know the old saying, “the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence,” but we all know that it rarely is. The same holds true when it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with coverage of-fered by another company. Perceptions are deceiving. A move to the “greener” grass on the other side of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet — in some cases, a lot less. That’s why it pays to remember another old adage, “Read the fine print.” There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force, whether that coverage is with the Knights of Columbus or with another company. I’ll focus on the potential pitfalls of replacing coverage here — pitfalls that an agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener might neglect to mention. First, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made for a period — typically two years — after the contract is issued. Chances are this is no longer an issue with your current coverage. Second, it’s unlikely that you can obtain the same amount of coverage, for the same premium, that you were able to obtain with your existing contract. The two factors that determine how much you’ll need to pay for life insurance coverage are age and health. Certainly, you’re older now than you were when you took out your current coverage. There’s no way around that. And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time? Is your blood pressure the same? Your cholesterol? Have you gained weight? All these factors can affect the amount of coverage you’ll get for your premium dollar. If someone encourages you to replace — or worse, drop — your existing coverage, please call me. I’ll show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest.
Let’s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family. Scott Marcum 281-253-9654 [email protected]
MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE by SK Dennis Majeski, Membership Director
Knights of Columbus Council 8482 has grown by 13 new Knights with numerous transfers so far, in this fraternal year (July 2018-July 2019). As of October 22, 2018, the Supreme Council shows Council 8482 with 464 members. Our membership growth quota for the fraternal year is 31 new Knights and 11 new insured Knights. As you can see, our Council has considerable work to do be-
fore we close the fraternal year out on June 30, 2019. Please help us to identify other good Catholic men that we can have join our order. In my years with the Knights, I have found that there are many reasons that Catholic men join the Knights of Columbus. Foremost is the concept of a large fraternal organization, where men united together can serve their Church, Community and Families, and accomplish more than one individual could possibly do. The Fra-ternal nature of the Knights of Columbus, is where an individual and his family belong to a larger “Family”, where there is a caring and unified culture. In good times and bad, your Brother Knights are united. Again, the concept of service within the family, church and community, is a model that we continue to strive to raise to the highest level. This year’s theme for the Knights is “Faith in Action”. Those three words outline and frame our mission of dedication and service. This is why as an Order, we promote involvement in service at our parish, Prince of Peace. If you have not already volunteer for a ministry, please do so; and also go to an ACTS retreat or any retreat to renew your faith. Involvement is the key to growth within the Knights of Columbus. As your membership director, I can assure you that to obtain our goals for this year it is necessary that we MUST WORK TOGETHER. Stop by the Knights of Columbus table during Welcoming Sondays for fellow-ship and to check us out. Also, ask “What can I do to help”. Please check the www.kofc8482.org website for important events and news or call me at 713-249-4446 or e-mail [email protected]

Special Advent Fellowship Sunday Event 12/8-9 by Jim McBane, Council Activities Director
Advent is a time of joyful preparation for the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. With that thought in mind and knowing that Father John has
long wished for Fellowship on every Sunday after all the Masses, the Knights of Columbus have stepped up to the challenge and are cooking for a special experimental Fellowship Sonday on December 8th and 9th. We will be preparing food after all of the weekend Masses. This will be a significant event with some new challenges for us. The event will help both the Knights of Columbus and the Prince of Peace Parish meet some of their goals.
Return of the Knights of Columbus to participating in Fellowship Sonday
Help Fr. John determine if extending Fellowship Sonday to all of the weekend Masses is both practical and effective.
Involve the Knights of Columbus more closely with the Spanish community.
Act as a fundraiser for our Seminarians. The Spanish community will actively participate with us after all of the Spanish Masses. Fr. Alfonso Delgado and Claudia Angulo, Span-ish Ministry Leader, are excited about both the timing of the event and to see the Knights of Columbus working more closely with the Spanish community. The next step is publicity and developing the cooking and serving teams. Watch the Knightbeat for more information to follow.
Zaka Road Hall Work Party by Richard Carter
The next Zaka Road Hall work party will be Saturday, November 10 starting at 8:00 am until 12:00 Noon. Projects to be completed are mowing the grass, trimming, edging and leaf blowing. Other project include pressure washing the slab and side of building, installing gutter covers and cleaning out the flower beds. Please join your Brother Knights in helping with the hall upkeep. There will be donuts and coffee in the morn-ing and chopped brisket sandwiches for lunch. Go to Signup genius to let us know that you will be there. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4aacae2fabfe3-knights

Culture of Life Report By Todd Dorn, Culture of Life Director
This question comes up at every election. Can Catholics ever vote for a politician who is pro-abortion? First, let’s get this clear: abortion is intrinsically evil, which means it’s always wrong. No one, especially Catholics, can ever morally obtain, per-form or support an abortion. But when it comes to politics, things can be messy. It’s almost never the case that there is a candidate we agree with completely. Politics is all
about compromise and the “art of the possible.” What if a politician supports abortion, but also supports a lot of other good things? Or what if no major politician in an election is pro-life—should Catholics vote for the candidates based on other criteria? Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (the future Pope Benedict XVI), while he was head of the Con-gregation for the Doctrine of Faith, addressed this question directly in a letter he wrote to a fellow Cardinal. And here’s what he said: “A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for Holy Communion, if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the Candidate’s permissive stand on abortion and/or euthanasia. When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia, but votes for that candidate for other rea-sons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of pro-portionate reasons.” In other words, a Catholic cannot be “personally opposed but support legal abortion” and if a Catholic ever decides to vote for a pro-abortion politician, he better have reasons good enough to justify it. The “proportionate reasons” is important, particularly since abortion is such a grave evil on such a wide scale, with millions of victims. It’s important to note that this reasoning applies to all moral is-sues in politics, not just abortion. Vivat Jesus,
Todd Dorn

THE HISTORY OF THE SILVER ROSE Our Lady of Guadalupe had done so much for her people in Mexico that, in 1960, the Columbian Squires, the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus, wanted to give something back to her. The group, headed by Brother Miguel Martinez Estrada, Grand Knight Andreas Saucedo and Fray Mar-gil De Jesus of Knights of Columbus Nuestra Senora de Monterrey Council 2312 in Monterrey, Mexico,
came up with the idea of running a rose to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. The Squires were so enthused that they wanted to invite other Squires from two other countries on the North American Continent to participate. They called on Squires from Laredo, Texas, and London, Ontario. The Canadian Squires asked to start the relay running of the Rose from there through the United States and finishing up in Mexico. Bishop John C. Cody of London blessed the first rose. It was then flown to New York where it was received by Grand Knight Joseph Thomasen, who in turn took it to Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart. Mr. Hart then took the Rose to Dallas, Texas, and delivered it to district officers of the state of Texas. Texas State Deputy Jack Collerin received the Rose and took it to Laredo, Texas, where it was given to the Squires from Monterrey, Mexico, at the International Bridge in Laredo. They ran the Rose from the International Bridge to Monterrey through Sabinas Hidalgo N.L. Mexico to Cienega de Flores and on to the Basilica in Monterrey, Mexico on December 12, 1960. The first rose was a natural rose, and after a year it had decomposed. The Squires were so full of inspiration they de-cided to make yet another relay run in 1961, but due to the condition of the Rose it could not be used again. After con-tacting Grand Knight Arthur Mount at Council 1134, Reverend Edward Gatfield (FatherTed) and Bishop John C. Cody decided to make a bronze rose and sent it to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. When Fray Antonio de Jesus Sacedon and the Squires of Circle 660 in Monterrey heard of the bronze rose, they decided to call upon Brother Miguel Martinez Montoya (owner of Joyeria Rosine) in Monterrey to make them a similar rose. The idea was to make a silver rose because silver is one of Mexico’s precious metals. The jeweler saw a beautiful bed of roses in a garden owned by Mrs. Shirla Ostwowk. He asked if he could have a rose as a model for the making of the “Silver Rose.” Mr. Montoya explained what had happened to the original rose in 1960 and what Canada was doing for Our Lady in Monterrey. Once she heard about the making of the “Silver Rose” she glad-ly gave him a rose and the stem to which it was attached. The rose bush from which the rose was removed was called “Rose of Peace.” The first “Silver Rose” was blessed by Bishop Alfonso Espino Silva. It was sent to New Haven to William L. Piedmont, Director of Fraternal Services at the Supreme Council Office. The Bronze Rose was blessed by Bishop Cody. It was received by Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart. Archbishop Francis J. Spellman of New York so admired both roses he kept them for a special Mass before they were flown to Texas. Texas State Deputy Jack Collerin, State Secretary Ed Gunter and Grand Knight Scott Grant of Fort Worth sent the roses on to Laredo. Laredo Council 2304 received the roses and turned them over to brother Knights from at the mid-point of the International Bridge. Brothers’ Louis G. Alanis received the “Silver Rose” and Brother Enrique Garcia re-ceived the Bronze Rose. Again the roses were taken to Sabinas Hidago and Cienega de Flores and on to Monterrey. This tradition symbolizes unity and especially the international brotherhood that has been jointly nurtured three countries. After 1961, the program was conducted by the Knights of Texas and Mexico and the Our Lady of Guadalupe Prov-ince of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus until the mid 1990s, when it was adopted as a Supreme Council program which grew to encompass three Silver Rose Routes
TODAY’S SILVER ROSE IS ONE OF EIGHT In March 2018, Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose - One Life, One Rose Program will begin when eight Silver Ros-es start their journeys on various routes in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Three routes will end in Mexico, an-other three in Texas, one other in Washington, D. C., and the eighth route will complete its journey at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT, where the Knights of Columbus was founded. All eight of the routes will conclude their journeys on December 12, 2018 on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, the same day when the three Sil-ver Roses in Mexico reach the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey. 2018 marks the 58th year of the program which began in 1960 to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our La-dy of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. The program has continued since then as a project of Knights of Columbus councils and Fourth Degree assemblies in several jurisdictions. In 2001, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson expanded the program by beginning the “Running of the Rose” from the 119th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Toronto. This is “a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus,” said Supreme Knight Anderson. “Through it we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Or-der, but we also reaffirm the Order’s dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of ‘One Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses.” Today, eight Silver Roses travel through North America exemplifying Knights of Columbus devotion to Our Lady and commitment to the Culture of Life. State Silver Rose Chairmen in each state or province set the schedule for Silver Rose prayer services within their ju-risdictions.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY by John Laube Each year over 400 needy families are adopted through the Mercy Ministry Adopt-A-Family Christmas program at Prince of Peace. Council 8482 participates each year in this ministry by adopting one of the larger families. Our Brotherhood participates by collecting toys, household goods, clothing and food for our adopted family. Your help is needed to provide for this family at Christmas. Please consider buying a needed gift or donating cash or a gift card this year. All items must be new. Gifts are to be wrapped and marked with boy, girl and the age, or the adult. Do not provide any perishable food items, alcohol or inappropriate violent toys. You can also call me and let me know if you would like to purchase items for a child or provide a minimum $25 gift card from either Wal-Mart or Food Town. LADIES: Please join us for Spiritual Growth and Education! Catholic Daughters Court of the Holy Family has launched our Wreaths Across America spon-sorship program for 2018. This is our 2nd year in a row to do this, and our chairman is Pam John-
son. This wonderful program helps us honor and pay tribute to our fallen soldiers, helps us to raise funds for Veterans’ programs and also for our Court. The Houston National Cemetery has a very touching ceremony where wreaths are placed on the graves of fallen soldiers on a designated date in December of each year. Each wreath is $15 and the Court will receive $5 for each wreath sold. The more wreaths we can sell, the more funds we raise to give back to de-serving charities. The deadline for orders is November 25th. October has been busy for our Court. We prepared and served dinners at the Alpha meetings. We enjoyed checking in the golfers and setting up the raffle prizes at the Prince of Peace Golf Classic on October 19th while enjoying some social time as well. Susan Gallagher spoke to us at our October meeting about the activities at the Mercy Ministry and how we can assist. We are hosting the Patriotic Rosary in the Mary Chapel on November 15th. We hope you will join us for this spe-cial program honoring our Veterans. Catholic Daughters of the Americas is the largest organization for Catholic women in the Americas and there is a very active, growing Court at Prince of Peace. Court of the Holy Family #2597 invites you to learn about an outstand-ing opportunity to foster community with other Catholic women at Prince of Peace. We offer consistent opportunities to serve others on a national, state, and local level and to nurture your spiritual life. And, we do all of that while devel-oping close friendships and having fun with one another! We invite you to join us! All women over the age of 18 are encouraged to consider membership in Court of the Holy Family. Our next meet-ing will be November 21 at 6:45 PM in room #201 of the St. Joseph Center at Prince of Peace. We will start gath-ering for fellowship and snacks at 6:45 PM with the meeting starting promptly at 7:05 PM. You are invited to join us to learn more about CDA and meet the members.
