Here’s the Weekly Schedule for March

March 18, 2018 WeeklyMarch 25, 2018 WeeklyMarch 25, 2018 Palm Sunday/Catholic Parish OutreachMarch 30, 2018 Good Friday/Holy Land Ministries

Last weekend Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama was here and presided at the 11:30 mass on Sunday morning. If you were here you

heard him say that the priest is not the “celebrant” of the mass, but the presider – that the gathered assembly of the people all “celebrate” the Mass, meaning to be present, to listen to the word, to receive the body of Christ, and to act and live as a disciple of Christ in the world. The bishop was gracious and appreciative of his time here.He recently hosted a listening session at the diocese about the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. He acknowledged that the BAA goals were high for many parishes and also pointed out that the diocese has grown rapidly over the past few decades and therefore the needs have increased. We at St. Francis are in the midst of our 2018 BAA – thank you to all who have already contributed, and we ask that if you have not yet contributed to please consider your pledge for 2018. As always, thank you!

On Saturday, March 24, several mem-bers of St. Francis will participate in “March for Our Lives” – a march by high school students in response to gun vio-lence in our schools. A line in the peace prayer of St. Francis reads “make me an instrument of your peace.” Our prayers and blessings on all who walk in support of peace in these divided times.A friend of mine recently sent me this, from Africa, which I find beautiful: “We believe in one high God, who out of all love created the beautiful world. We believe that God made good his promise by sending his son, Jesus Christ, a man in the flesh, a Jew by tribe, born poor in a little village, who left his home and was always on safari doing good, curing people by the power of God, teaching about God and man, showing that the meaning of religion is love. He was re-jected by his people, tortured and nailed, hands and feet to a cross, and died. He lay buried in a grave, but the hyenas did not touch him, and on the third day he rose from the grave.” Blessings on your week!

Last week, we had the great pleasure to meet our Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama. He was very friendly to our children, especially to our 4-year-old son, Ian, who, when he leaned forward to greet him, grabbed the Bishop by the crucifix and asked about the little bird in it. The Bishop responded that it was the Holy Spirit; Ian replied by saying: “No, don‘t you know, it’s the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit”. Bishop Zarama laughed and blessed him. We are so happy that he came to visit us at Saint Francis. ~ Carla Abreu, Ian’s Mom

There is such an amazing presence here in our St. Francis home. We were so blessed to have Bishop Luis with us last weekend – experienc-ing Christ as one united family. The BAA provides a unique opportunity to St. Francis and parishes through-out the diocese to come together to build and support our faith. In the same way we may be helping to support other parishes, other par-ishes are helping to support us. Our combined efforts enable a greater capacity and reach for our Christian faith and values across our diocese.

Deepest gratitude for your participation in this year’s BAA. Please contact Deb Royals Mizerk if you have any questions: deb.royals-mizerk@ stfrancisraleigh.org or call 919-847-8205x222.

HolyHoly Week begins next Sunday, March 25

Our observance of Lent has been a time to remember who we are and whose we are as a people of good news of Jesus Christ. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we have sought to readjust and reorient our lives as believers so that we might be strengthened more fully into a people called and gifted for mission in the world. During Lent, we have journeyed with those who are preparing for the Easter sacraments when we, too, remember our baptism and renew our baptismal promises. Our witness to the Elect and Candidates for Full Communion, and prayer for them, has brought them to these days of transformation.

Live Stations of the Cross—Sunday, March 25—7:00pmJoin us for this extraordinary opportunity to enter into Jesus’ passion and death through music, acting, and prayer. A light supper will be served in Clare Fellowship Hall followed by the prayer service at 7:00pm in the church.

Tenebrae Service—Wednesday, March 28—6:30pmTenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows” in Latin, is a tradi-tional prayer of the Church that reflects the darkness of Good Friday with the gradual extinguishing of light. (In the church)

Our Parish will Pray the Divine Office during Holy WeekIn celebrating the Divine Office (or Liturgy of the Hours) during the Triduum, the Church unites itself to the prayer of Jesus Christ as he approached and underwent His passion and death. In marking not only the principal celebrations of these three days, but also the hours of the day that precede and follow them, we, as a community of faith, undergo a sanctify-ing and purifying activity. We mark the gradual sanctification of human life and history through our reflection of prayer and praise on the glorious and awe-inspiring work of God in the self-emptying and redemptive suffering and rising of His Son. Please join us at 9:00 am in the church on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday for Morning Prayer. We will pray Night Prayer on Holy Thursday at 11:30pm in Clare Fellowship Hall.

TRIDUUMTriduum, a period of three days (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday), is a celebration of the Church throughout the world. It is a time to remember specifically the great events that won for us salvation and to celebrate Christ’s, and our own, victory over death.

Holy Thursday—March 29Morning Prayer—9:00am (in the church)Mass of the Lord’s Supper—7:00pmNight Prayer and Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament—11:30pm.On this day we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This liturgy celebrates the institution of the Eucharist, recalling Christ’s words to his disciples on the night before he died. After Mass, there will be adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 12:00 midnight in Clare Fellowship Hall.

Good Friday—March 30Morning Prayer—9:00am (in the church)Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion—3:00pmOn this one day of the year that the Eucharist is not celebrated, we rather celebrate the passion of the Lord in the afternoon hours, when scripture says our Lord died. The liturgy is marked by the reading of the Passion of our Lord Jesus from the Gos-pel of John, the ancient General intercessions that pray for the needs of people everywhere, and the Veneration of the Cross.

Holy Saturday—March 31Morning Prayer—9:00am (in the church)Easter food blessing—10:00am (in the columbarium)Easter Sunday - The Resurrection of the Lord—At the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter—8:30pmThe great period of the Triduum culminates with the celebra-tion of the “most solemn night”, the night that marks our Lord’s passover from death to life. At this celebration we continue the ancient tradition of the early Church of keeping vigil for the fulfillment of God’s promises in this time and place. The liturgy is marked by four movements: the Service of Light, where new fire is kindled and the Easter Candle is prepared and processed into the church. The Liturgy of the Word, where our salvation history is revealed. The Rites of Initiation, where our Elect are baptized and they and the candidates for full communion are welcomed formally into the community of faith. And the celebra-tion of the first Eucharist of Easter, where those newly baptized and confirmed join us, for the first time, at the table of the Lord.

Eating Together Faithfully

This spring St. Francis will offer an 8-session small group opportunity that explores the relationship between what we eat – our daily bread – and what we believe as disciples of Jesus Christ. A newly developed curriculum called Eating Together Faithfully will be used that focuses on the biblical narrative and the ways Jesus invites us to share Eucharist – literally “thanksgiving” – at his table and our tables.

This opportunity is open to 12-15 people. The first session will be on April 12, 10:30am to 12:30pm and the group will meet every Thursday until May 31. Each session will include sharing a meal (brunch) together and conversation around themes from the readings and reflections. Sessions will be held in a variety of locations around Raleigh, such as a local farm, church kitchen, restaurant, or food pantry. This opportunity also includes an opening retreat day. Cost for participation in this opportunity is $25.

Sign-up now at www.stfrancisraleigh.org/foodandfaith. For more information, contact Trevor Thompson, 919-847-8205 x270

Join others from the community in a Good Friday – March 30 – justice and peace themed Stations of the Cross at the NC State Capital. The Way of the Cross begins at 12:00 noon. Contact Trevor Thompson, Director of Justice and Peace, 919-847-8205x270, [email protected], for more details about this event, or the weeklong Pilgrimage for Justice and Peace that travels across the state raising awareness and prayer around issues of social concern, especially for the plight of immigrants in our state.

In Wake County there are many families facing homeless-ness and thus struggling, on a daily basis, to survive. Through our partnership with Family Promise (formally known as Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network or WIHN), we have a special opportunity to shelter four families attempting to transition out of homelessness for a week, Sunday April 1 to Sunday April 8. During the week, there are a whole host of volunteer opportunities for you and your family to help. This is a great opportunity to share in a work of mercy for someone looking to better their lives. We need people to prepare and share a meal, help with childcare or transportation, or be an overnight guest. You can bring the whole family! Remember that just your physi-cal presence and willingness to enter into their life for even this small period of time, says to that person: “You matter … you are worthy and of value and deserving of dignity and my time.” What a beautiful message for all of us to hear in our upcoming Easter season – you have new life! There will be representatives in the Stewardship Center after all the masses this weekend and next to answer questions and sign you up. Or you may contact Ron Smith directly at [email protected] or 919-455-7786. Thank you for any help you can provide!

When you were in High School you looked forward to being a Senior! The first time you get a letter from AARP the meaning of the word Senior changes. That’s one of the reasons we have renamed our social organization The St. Francis 50+ Adult Group. The 50+ Adult Group is sponsored by The Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi and affiliated with the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources (Raleigh PRCR) Adult Program. The elected Group Officers, as well as the Board of Directors provide the Group leadership. Membership is open to St. Francis parishioners and residents of Wake County and surrounding areas. Why should I consider joining the 50+ Adult Group? To come together with others that are 50+ to not only share in fellowship but also develop relationships with one another through social, spiritual, charitable, and educational opportunities. Education Ministries

The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The key to renewed appro-priation of these practices is to see their link to baptismal renewal.Almsgiving, the third traditional pillar is a sign of our care for those in need and an expression of our gratitude for all that God has given to us. Works of charity and the promotion of justice are integral elements of the Christian way of life we began when we were baptized. This past week our little learners partici-pated in our Little Francis Cares program and assembled 95 soup kits that will be given to Our Lady of the Rosary in Louisburg. They are learning, at an early age, the importance of giving back to our community and to those who may need a little extra care in their lives.

The Franciscan School is thrilled to announce that Mrs. Beatriz Jiménez has been selected as the 2017-2018 recipient of the Diocese of Raleigh’s Monsignor Gerald Lawrence Lewis Award for Excellence in Teaching. This annual award given by the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Raleigh recognizes superlative classroom teachers in grades K-12 who have illustrated strong commit-ment to their students, colleagues and schools, and to their family, church, and civic communities. Mrs. Jiménez teaches Kindergar-ten through fourth-grade Spanish at TFS. She is in her 44th year of teaching with the last five years at TFS in her current position. Mrs. Jiménez believes that teachers striving for excellence in Catholic schools should recognize “Christ is our Master, our ‘Maestro,’ our Teacher. Teaching is the most noble profession. Go and set the world on fire! Be passionate about what you teach your students. Love what you do and, above all, love them.”In the award nomination letter for Señora Jiménez, TFS Mike Watson wrote:“Mrs. Jiménez’s initiative and innovation is based on years of experience, and resulted in her creation of [an enhanced] curricu-

Each described the significant impact she had on them. Twenty years later one student, now married, moved to Raleigh and enrolled his daughter at TFS. He was surprised and delighted to find that Mrs. Jiménez would be his daughter’s Spanish teacher and continue to have an influence on their family.Mrs. Jiménez received a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Arts in Spanish Literature and under-took doctoral coursework in Spanish Literature from Florida International University. The Lewis Award will be presented to Mrs. Jiménez at a special Liturgy on April 18 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Formation Registration for Grades K – 12 opens soon!

Our program is a small group-based faith formation model, centered on the Mass, offering food and fellowship, in a fun, social setting and safe environment. Because Mass is the source and summit of our faith, our program meeting times are scheduled around Mass to prepare the children and youth to be open to the message proclaimed there. We typically meet twice a month. We begin each session with time for fellowship and food, and then move into the programming portion. Our small group based model mir-rors the structure of the liturgy with four portions – gather, proclaim, break, and send. The programming begins with prayer and some sort of game or activity to set up the theme of the session. The proclaim is a teaching in some form (talk, video, skit, etc.). At break, participants move into their small groups for a discussion, led by trained adult volunteers and to “break open” the theme of the session. Afterwards, they gather for wrap-up, closing prayer, and then are sent forth. Families MUST be registered parishioners at St. Francis of Assisi to participate in Faith Formation.
