Some of the greatest memories of high school are formed around athletics. Participation in athletics is important in the formation of a well-rounded student. Along with improving physical skills, athletics help build character, develop a sense of teamwork, and encourage all students to set and attain individual and team goals. A rich tradition of athletic excellence and numerous team and individual accomplishments have made BLHS athletic teams well respected opponents in state-wide athletic competitions. As a member of IHSAA, Bishop Luers students compete in eighteen varsity sports.

Opportunities for athletic participation are varied and many students participate in one more sport, in addition to other co-curricular activities. Bishop Luers student athletes understand the importance of Christian character, conduct, athletic achievement, leadership, academic leadership and respect for teammates and opponents. Students who need additional help have tutoring and mentoring available to them before, during, and a er school. Teachers and staff are committed to helping students grow mind, body, and spirit, ensuring the success and well-being of all students.

The faculty and staff really helped me feel a part of the Luers community and ensured that I would meet the academic rigor in order to succeed in life after high school. The courses at Luers were challenging yet much needed in order to prepare for college and I am thankful for that. I also kept my faith in God the entire time as I made huge decisions and realized that my hard work would eventually pay off. As a first-generation Latino, it is often not easy to overcome the obstacles in life. However, the support I received from Luers along with my faith in God and in myself, I now am happy with what I am doing - helping underrepresented communities.

At the end of middle school, I was given the opportunity to choose where I went to high school. A public school was one option, but I opted to go to Luers as I felt it was simply a better fit for me. It was smaller in size, giving me more opportunities in academics and sports. I had stronger relationships with my educators, coaches and other staff members. They were always there to answer questions and sometimes just to listen. I felt recognized and valued. My life has been full of twists and turns, ups and downs, but because I had the opportunity to learn more about God’s teachings, I felt supported in all of my decisions. I left Luers knowing more about myself and what my faith meant to me. My high school years helped develop me into the person I am today, and I am forever grateful.

I recently graduated from Trine University with a dual-license in English Education 5-12 and Special Education P-12 and a minor in psychology.  I was honored to receive the Franks School of Education Distinguished Student of the Year, and finished with a 4.0 GPA. Because I was able to find my self-identity through my years at Luers, I went into college knowing that my faith was important.  During college, I continued to attend mass at a local Catholic church, and my leadership role in my sorority placed a strong emphasis on the importance of service that was developed in my at Luers.  Bishop Luers gave me the ability to make choices for myself, always look at the bigger picture, and connect both my academics and sportsmanship to my whole character.  The one thing I appreciate most about going to Bishop Luers is FAMILY!  I appreciate knowing I can walk into the building or any Luers event and know that I still belong and I am remembered – I wish I had a better cliché than the obvious, but once a Knight, always a Knight!

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT AT LUERS WITH ALUMNI SUPPORTOur alumni and friends continue to show their “Luers Spirit” by supporting our students.
