The motley meanings of the word are a result of the disparate place it holds in every individual’s life. For some, it is a place where they discover themselves with an unprecedent- ed sense of liberty and freedom while for others, it is just an educa- tional institution which serves as a clog to an astutely planned future. Most importantly and invariably, it is a place where we try to thrive in every aspect of life. After a stren- uous schedule of coaching class- es, competitive examinations and counselling, if you have made it to Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, then pat yourself on the back while we welcome you to one of the best technical colleges of India. Established in 1955 with the aim of imparting non pareil technical education, this Deemed University has always been in the vanguard of technical progress. This is due to the avant-garde philosophy which is backed by state-of-the-art facilities including a Central Library, a Central Computer Aided Design Laboratory, a Central Instrumentation Facility and a Central Computing Facility along with 21 Academic Departments which have top notch facilities. From setting up our country’s first ever Rocketry Department to making the formula for Benadryl and building some components of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, BIT has always been at the forefront of innovation. As you make your way into the college campus, you are welcomed by dense sylvan trees flanking paved roads, which ultimately lead to the iconic main building. To make life easier, there are various amenities like a dispensary, co- operative shops, canteens, coffee shops and ATMs. A superfast LAN connection often acts as a lifeline and provides you with access to all information on the internet. Slowly and slyly, you fall in love with the awesome albeit a bit unpredictable weather, the clean and pure air and the beautiful scenery surrounding the college. An ebullient and assiduous Training and Placement Cell ensures ample job and internship opportunities for students of all disciplines. Companies like Microsoft, Goldman Sachs and Tata Steel provide decent placement opportunities to students across various branches. Apart from placements, many students « IN CONVERSATION WITH THE DEAN STUDENTS’ WELFARE Every new academic year brings with it new hopes, aspirations and rudiments. Students are filled with new zeal and have their plans ready for the fresh semester. While we anticipate what is in store for us in the college, we decided to have a conversation with Dr. Mahesh Chandra, the newly appointed Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW). Q: How will you work to improve the relation between the clubs and the administration? I have assigned Faculty Advisers to all the Clubs and the Committees will be ready in a few days. All the requirements of the clubs, monetary and resource, will be taken care of. Funds will be allocated according to their needs. I assure them my full support. Q: BIT has slumped in the NIRF rankings of 2017 from 17th to 31st . Lack of Research has played a major role in it. What is the Road-map for better performance in the future? The Vice Chancellor, Dr. M.K Mishra, had a meeting with the HODs, the Deans and the faculty on this very issue and asked them to emphasize on research work. The required funds will be provided to carry out research and the rules for Faculty Entry would be made more stringent, which will ensure that we get an inflow of quality faculty members. This will make the institute more instrumental towards research in the coming years. Q: What can we expect from BITOTSAV’18? Bitotsav will be conducted with its usual grandeur and sheen. However, we are planning to make it a 3 day affair instead of a 5 day one. Also, I plan to give more responsibility to the third-year students as the final- year students leave the college every year without being able to sort out the accounts properly. However, the third-year students, who will remain in the campus for another year, will have enough time to settle the accounts in a proper manner. Nevertheless, the final year students, like always, will be the leaders. Q: What is your message to the students? I can assure all the students that I am always available for them. I will help the students in every way possible at all times. I would ask them not to hesitate in seeking my help. I welcome the newly admitted 2k17 students and wish them all the best for their future and hope that they have a memorable journey, here at BIT. make it to the top B-Schools or technical institutions around the world to pursue their MBA or MS respectively. A sizeable portion of the graduates also take the less-travelled road as they indulge in unconventional career avenues like writing, film-making and start-ups, amongst other orientations. There are various student-run clubs and student chapters of international bodies which cater to the social, cultural and technical interests of students. They help you add new dimensions to your personality as you develop in a more comprehensive manner. The two main college fests- Bitotsav and Pantheon, along with a host of other events organized by various clubs round the year ensure that monotony and banality do not touch your life. Although the transition from home to college is a bit onerous, your stay at BIT is surely going to be worth all the effort, and much more pleasant than first sights would have you believe. To make this transition a tad more facile, we have designed this guide to familiarise you with the multiple facets of this campus. We wish you the best as you embark on a new chapter of life and hope that with a little help from us, you get the best that this place has to offer. Q: What are the challenges that the college faces as of now and what are the areas we need to improve upon? Firstly, our college is away from the main city of Ranchi. We are improving our bus services to cater to their needs. There are 23 IITs, 31 NITs and various centrally funded institutions in our country. BIT, being a Deemed University, is hard put to compete with them. With our aim to be in the Top-20 in coming year, we are working for the all-round development of the college- better hostels, improving research facilities, providing good faculty etc. Club Activities will be given special attention since it is through the Clubs that the students get to implement new ideas that enhance their creativity. Q: Having an Air Force background, how have you to adapted yourself to the roles that are demanded of an academician? It has been a tough journey for me to rise up to my current status. Nevertheless, as experience has taught me, and as I would sermonize to my students, hard work and dedication can get you out of the toughest of fixes. Now that I have been entrusted with this responsibility, my main focus will be the welfare of the students. Having an Air Force background has definitely helped me. I have experienced the diverse cultures of various states which help me understand the feelings and needs of all the students. I work round the clock to sort out their problems in the minimum time in an optimum manner. Catch the complete interview at- www.bitmesra.ac.in/naps/dsw PAINTING CREDITS: ANKIT AGRAWAL (CIVIL 2k15)
